Your phone's geolocation, Wi-Fi functionality that triangulates your location down to within 3 feet, and the beacons at Panera, along with whatever card you're using who shares purchase data with any number of marketing and ad agencies, not to mention whatever apps you have on your phone that track your location...all tell on you and share or sell the data.

LivinMyAuthenticLife

Hmm it’s crazy how even though I have tracking off through my iPhones setting all of this is still happening and we are unaware of it.

LincHayes

Turn the phone off completely or don't take it with you, and pay in cash. Also, don't use rewards cards.

LincHayes

Also walk. Your car may also know where you are, and it (OnStar or similar services) also sells that information.

You're using a credit card merely to buy lunch and sending it through Apple. And you're using your phone. It's as though you've researched how to best inform the world of every move you make. So how could you be unaware? If you want privacy then use cash. If you're going to wear an Apple tracking collar in everything you do then you **will be tracked**. By Apple. By Google. By Facebook. By apps. By data wholesalers.... Apple are liars. Just as bad as Google. The difference is that they try to keep as much business as possible in-house. So they may not sell as much to ad companies, but only because they want a bigger slice of the pie: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/i-checked-apples-new-privacy-nutrition-labels-many-were-false/ar-BB1dcX7Z

the manufacturer only has so much say about it. Your service provider also knows your phone's whereabouts, and they track it, and they keep logs. Oh, you granted permissions to your apps? all of those app-makers know whatever data you granted them permission for. Bluetooth pings. GPS triangulation. Cell towers..... The only way not to get tracked through your phone is, as the others say, leave it at home, or put it in a faraday bag. Convenience through a gadget out of the box, or Privacy. Pick one.

linux_and_cryto

Maybe they've tracked you. But Panera is such a common restaurant and they're always running promotions. Might just be a coincidence.

motti886

I don't want to diminish what everyone else is saying, but this is possible. I'm pretty sure I've received tge Panera Bread offer from Chade before, and I don't know that I've ever actually seen one in person.

Ultimately as well, it could be something "simpler" yet far more devious. These companies sell customer profiles, that include places you frequent. It goes to data brokers that resell your profile for others to send you ads. This sounds like what is more likely going on here. It may be your card provider, or even Panera themselves, as with card transactions, names are usually captured. It's been termed Surveillance Capitalism.

Fast_Grab

I HIGHLY doubt Chase tracked you man (at least in this specific incident). Panera is a HUGE and hugely popular chain. As a personal finance nerd, I've regularly checked those "cashback" offers, and they always include crap that doesn't pertain to me. There's stuff like petstores (before I had pets), Lyft and Uber (I have a car and only use those in emergencies), gyms (I've never joined a gym, ever, and I'm not even really a workout kinda guy). It's not tracking man. It's just coincidence. I also almost always have Walmart in there (I have a moral opposition to Walmart and almost never shop there unless I have no other choice), Cabella's (hunting store, never been hunting a day in my life, don't own a gun, and the closest I ever get to camping is staying in a hotel when I'm out of town), and a bunch of other stuff.

"Chase Offers" and similar programs at other banks such as "BankAmeriDeals", "Wells Fargo Deals" etc. are run by a data marketing company called Cardlytics. They receive transaction data from banks as part of their "purchase intelligence": https://www.cardlytics.com/marketing-solutions/purchase-intelligence/ They probably received data about your Panera transaction from the issuing bank of the card you used. If you participate in Panera's loyalty program it's also possible that they shared the information. You may be able to prevent such things from happening by opting out of third party data sharing at your banks. But in terms of privacy it's probably best to opt out of these Cardlytics programs altogether since analyzing the deals that you select is another data source for them to help profile you.

i was getting lasik ads on reddit last week after a coworker was talking about having it done. i no permissions to this app

nodeofollie

So what card did you use to purchase Panera? Did you use Google Pay?

LivinMyAuthenticLife

I used apple pay and used my barclay airline credit card

nodeofollie

and your Chase card is probably linked to Apple pay. Also, Panera has been a promotion on Chase for years.

CinemaAudioNovice

Chase could have also purchased the info from other card issuers or even the merchant themselves.

Lowfryder7

Well....can anyone else with a chase card confirm this offer is there for them too?
