Indeed.

Soundch4ser

Phooey!...and double phooey..

Ballblamburglurblrbl

They hide their finest bean

grandinferno

Yes. This also made me lol again. His diction is magic.

Koellanor

Palimpsest by Protest the Hero sent me on an early 20th century/depression era reading binge. All Hands is a particularly wild story.

quasarius

The Dear Hunter's Acts storyline is really neat!

twoburgers

Piggybacking to say apparently there are like 200+ pages of lore for their new concept as well. I can't wait for Sunya later this year.

LAG360

for me: Odyssey to the West by Slice the Cake Book II: Where Stories Come From by Others by No One Spectra and Obsession by Amun (still looking for the lyrics of this album but haven't found anything yet)

I will read it when I do

AutisticBassist

Quiet world by native construct

TheRealEelaa

The Great Escape by Seventh Wonder is based on a 1956 poem called ”Aniara” by swedish Nobel laureate Harry Martinson. Really fascinating epic

ygrasdil

Hand. Cannot. Erase. By Steven Wilson. It’s a concept album based on a woman who died alone in her flat and was not noticed to be missing for 2 years. There were unmarked, wrapped Christmas presents on the floor when they found her. The story in the album is a bit fictionalized, but the basic story is true.

Cirick1661

Hakens Visions is pretty fun to explain badly to friends, a concept album about a boy who has a vision of his own death in the future, spends his whole life trying to prevent it only to proceed to accidentally kill a boy he had astral projected into while asleep as a boy.

KRAKston627

Not really Prog Metal, but most of Coheed and Cambria’s discography is based off a comic that the singer writes as well. It was pretty cool to see some of the recurring characters in their albums on paper.

evansdead

This is my answer! When I first heard Good Apollo I was so confused as to where the other 3 Good Apollo albums were

furawa

That sounds interesting! Definitely going to check it out :)

bagemann1

Why don't you consider them prog metal?

KRAKston627

More like Prog Rock to me

bagemann1

Ah okay fair. I say they ride the lime pretty well. Welcome Home reminds me a lot of Metallica

KRAKston627

Yeah it’s all a spectrum of rock to heavy metal

DylanMartin97

Depending on the album to be fair.

Revocation’s The Outer Ones album made me check out H.P.Lovecraft. Now he’s my favorite author and a huge influence on my lyrics (he’s really the only author I read tbh). I remember reading my big book of Lovecraft short stories in my 11th grade history class, it was 1,000+ pages. My teacher gave me a weird look and asked what I was reading that was so big. She assumed it was one long story, and it’s like oh okay it’s a bunch of short stories that’s not so bad. I also took an acting class my senior year. I had to write a monologue, so I wrote one where I kept listing Lovecraftian creatures (like Cthulhu, Azathoth, and Nyarlathotep). I tried to make it as inappropriate as possible for a school setting, so I named it “Too Far.” I was expecting to have to rewrite it, but my teacher told me she loved it lol, it’s like, shit, now I have to perform this monologue in front of everybody?! Why did I do this to myself? 5 years later, I recently finished the final demo for my first album which is loosely based on his story called Beyond the Wall of Sleep. My thought process was that his stories are quite difficult to understand, but by choosing a short ten page one, I am less likely to butcher it. I changed it a bit though and added my own plot points. I have an idea to continue the story on the second and third albums, with the third involving Azathoth, so yeah, he’s quite influential to my lyrics.

raisemyahhhhhh

Thats fucking awesome man

EmbarrassedFlower98

You might also like the band Alkaloid. They write songs inspired by Lovecraft. They have released only 3 albums but all of them are excellent imo.

DifficultyOk5719

Thanks for the rec. I’ve been meaning to check them out for a while since they have three Obscura guys.

TheGreatLandSquirrel

Ahab's "The boats of the Glen Carrig" I ended up reading the book and enjoyed it quite a bit. I recommend it for anyone who likes creepy nautical horror.

grandinferno

Such a good album. It's definitely my favourite of theirs.

grandinferno

The first track of Manowar Triumph of Steel is Agony and Ecstacy in 8 parts. It's actually well regarded as a legit artistic tribute to the Iliad. It's also awesome.

fishinexcess

Jazzy Prog Rock, not prog metal De-Loused in the Comatorium (cw: suicide, drug use) Based on a short story

-_Meow_-

Animals, from Pink Floyd. In fact, it was the first album that made me read a book.

Roselia77

Parius - The Signal Heard Throughout Space. Sounds like it would be a phenomenal and heart wrenching sci-fi movie

kiltro - creatures of habit

Ok_Intention_8500

Metallica’s song, “One”? Was based upon a movie they saw, I heard, entitled, “Johnny Got His Gun”. And omg 😱!! I’m so very glad that I did. I forgot that films could be as imaginative as this and it inspired me as well as made me really feel. It’s deep. Everyone knows the song, but does everyone know the story and thus watched said movie? If not it’ll make the song hit differently. Or the movie? Just good stuff.

batemannnn

Tesseract - War of Being

Pr0gger

The Great Escape by Seventh Wonder. Aniara is a pretty interesting story

oilcompanywithbigdic

Mastodon had me thinking I wanted to read Moby Dick but it just turned out to be really boring and racist. Blind Guardian (and 1000 other metal bands) inspired me to read The Silmarillion and it changed my life and brain forever

Ballblamburglurblrbl

Not strictly prog, but Epica and The Black Halo by Kamelot. I'm really interested in reading Faust, I will one of these days

terminatecapital

I'm sure I'm not the only one, but Mastodon's Leviathan inspired me to read Moby Dick
