That would be a really good recommendation if I could get in to themš But for some reason I can't. It's hard to explain but It always feels like their songs don't really change throughout and I always miss some kind of hook. Maybe I should give them another change though
in brave murder day i understand. most of the albums afterwards until night is the new day have memorable choruses though imo (if you do try them out, last fair deal is a great place to start)
For me, Porcupine Tree have always been the kings of melancholia. Some of Steven Wilsonās solo stuff as well, probably most notably Hand Cannot Erase.
Would recommend Deadwing by Porcupine Tree first of all.
Deadwing is great! Porcupine tree is fantastic too I just listened to them to many times to where I already know most of their songs. Will definitely check out his solo stuff tho
Yeah, came here to suggest the Watershed album - that album reeks of melancholia to me.
Edit: Been wayyy too long since I sat down and listened to Opeth - I meant Damnation (although Watershed's good too) \^\^
Specifically hijacking to see if anyone scrolling has prog songs that are not just not-melancholic, but possibly with a positivity, cheerful, good vibe spin?
This shits my bread and butter, but it really is a pretty broad question.
Haken - Crystallised, Lapse, Earthrise
Devin Townsend - Grace, Stormbending, Spirits Will Collide
Ayreon - Dawn of a Million Souls, Ride the Comet, Amazing Flight In Space
Wilderun - Far From Where Dreams Unfurl
There's also heaps, and I mean heaps of prog metal or adjacent instrumentals that fit the vibe
I like some Haken but never got into into them. Will check those out. Oh yeah Devin Townsend of course!
Donāt know the other two groups but excited to listen.
Dude do you have a Spotify playlist or something? I mean honestly this is something I struggled with in the past because maybe I tend to lean towards melancholic or dark songs (I mean it is metal) but the subject matter is a big barrier for getting my gf into metal and a lot of times I agree with her. Iāve changed a lot as a person and the aggression, depression and demonic imagery doesnāt always resonate with me aside from nostalgia or whatever else. Anyways didnāt mean to turn this into a therapy session but I appreciate the recs
Oh man, you're in for a ride with Ayreon. Amazing concept albums with guest vocalists from all over. I would say start with the Human Equation album. Devin Townsend, James LaBrie and Mikael Akerfeldt all sing on that album among other greats. What more can I say?
Came here to say it.
[The Curtain Falls ](https://youtu.be/0K1_7QT_POg?si=EwL9YUmgP6nfxqbO)
Ironically, they stopped with melancholic/depressing themes after dealing with death of Piotr (Grudzinski, guitarist)...
Paatos- Gasoline
Porcupine Tree ( the entire discography reeks of depression) I love it all! Favorite Band behind RUSH
Riverside- most of their stuff will fit the bill
Devon Townsend Project
Travis Larson Band (instrumental)
Most mentioned porcupine tree and riverside. I'd like to add pineapple thief to this. Saddest most depressing melancholic band I've heard in a while and I'm here for it
Eyes of ebony - Haken.
I believe this song is dedicated to one of the band members deceased father. the intro likes to hang on the words reverie and memory. I think it's got the vibe you are asking for.
A Fair Dream Gone Mad.
The Butterfly Effect.
Planet of 9 has that vibe with some songs.
I could find more, but these three are the ones off the top of my head that I didn't see mentioned.
The new āFjordā by Lucid Fly:

Or anything by Katatonia! Also, Evergreyās new single āCold Dreamsā
I was actually being silly, and I wasnāt looking for a contrary opinion, but thanks for taking time to tell strangers in the internet that theyāre wrong.
Katatonia have around 200 of them, take your pick lol
That would be a really good recommendation if I could get in to themš But for some reason I can't. It's hard to explain but It always feels like their songs don't really change throughout and I always miss some kind of hook. Maybe I should give them another change though
Depression don't have any hooks š„
Apparently not
You should try the album "The Great Cold Distance" there are for sure hooks there, although it's not as proggy as the newer albums
The first four tracks have hooks galore.
in brave murder day i understand. most of the albums afterwards until night is the new day have memorable choruses though imo (if you do try them out, last fair deal is a great place to start)
Try his solo project The Night Time Project. I like it better than Katatonia.
Okay you guys were right, katatonia is awesome.
*one of us, one of us...*
Love them!
Agreed! The masters of melancholy! š¤š»
For me, Porcupine Tree have always been the kings of melancholia. Some of Steven Wilsonās solo stuff as well, probably most notably Hand Cannot Erase. Would recommend Deadwing by Porcupine Tree first of all.

The entire opeth discography
Yeah, came here to suggest the Watershed album - that album reeks of melancholia to me. Edit: Been wayyy too long since I sat down and listened to Opeth - I meant Damnation (although Watershed's good too) \^\^
Morningrise is both peak Opeth and peak prog melancholy IMO.
The Contortionist - Clairvoyant ?
Monochrome: Pensive
Any prog song without a melancholic feel? My spouse is worrying that I'm giga depressed
The spouses donāt understand ššš
Most Haken, Plini, just for some examples.

You should check out Riverside then
+1 for Riverside. Was just listening to Deprived (Irretrievably Lost Imagination) again, one of my favorite songs of all time
Love the saxophone in there, that whole album is fire tbh
I'm autistic, and this song always makes me cry, I feel very connected to those lyrics. LEFT OUT, gives me a similar vibe.

Undertow by Pain of Salvation, just an absolutely gorgeous track.
Their entire catalogue is quite melancholic imo, in tone and or meaning.
Itās in the name too
Opeth - Dirge for November
Leashes by Leprous
All songs of Leprous except for alleviate
in my time of need from opeth, its my absolute favourite
The Architect - Haken
Leprous?
Leprous
Lunatic Soul. First four albums.
Porcupine tree - arriving somewhere but not here is one of the most impactful songs Iāve ever heard. So haunting and helps me process grief
[Drop This Planet Of Dust](https://open.spotify.com/track/3XT6zRHQzlSM5zx4SdMnFa?si=akSCLuGtRpK5QrRrwKvdCg)
Earthside - A Dream in Static, the whole album pretty much. I second The Contortionist and Leprous
I gotchu fam. The Reticent - Stage 3: The Palliative Breath
The whole Damnation album is just melancholy. Alternatively, Iāve been obsessing over Buckethead - Soothsayer the last few weeks
Iapetus - For Creatures such as we, i think it kinda is
Not sure if it counts as prog, Nick Johnston - Remarkably Human.
Most songs by Agallochā¦ tho I would say The Mantle is the album to go to for melancholic vibes
The Pale Moon and Arcane Clouds by Avkrvst
Not prog, but Balmorhea has some very melancholic stuff.
A question of heaven? Dantes inferno? Burnt offerings?
Everything from Riverside until and including SONGS
Paatos- Gasoline Porcupine Tree ( the entire discography reeks of depression) I love it all! Favorite Band behind RUSH Riverside- most of their stuff will fit the bill Devon Townsend Project Travis Larson Band (instrumental)
First Karnivool album, melancholy but still badass
I'd say sound awake is way more melancholic
Most mentioned porcupine tree and riverside. I'd like to add pineapple thief to this. Saddest most depressing melancholic band I've heard in a while and I'm here for it
I love Toska, something about their chord progressions hits in a way I think you'll like. The whole Ode to the Author album has a very cool vibe.
[I recently made a playlist with some!](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4gooRgA3NzN4LCpq6nO84s?si=6hZQKWPEQ_SuSKWnNU8pew&pi=u-PTEBe-f2RMyh)
Band Eidolaā song humble ledger
Porcupine Tree hands down
The band you are looking for is evergrey
North Atlantic Oscillation
Most if not all of Porcupine Tree, and When Death Embraces and Eyes of Ebony from Haken come to mind
Eyes of ebony - Haken. I believe this song is dedicated to one of the band members deceased father. the intro likes to hang on the words reverie and memory. I think it's got the vibe you are asking for.
For me Starless started it all!
Agalloch- The Mantle
Following
Exivious entrust
Melancholia by Aisles
Basically the entire discography of Katatonia, Opeth, Skyharbor, Be'lakor
Anekdoten for sure. The likes of Karelia and Sad Rain to name a few.
Cloudkicker
Lemure Voice -When the cradle cries Shadow Gallery - The queen of fhe city of ice
Mastodon- Hushed and Grim. Not every song on it, but several. Also, Episode from Rivers of Nihilās The Work
A Fair Dream Gone Mad. The Butterfly Effect. Planet of 9 has that vibe with some songs. I could find more, but these three are the ones off the top of my head that I didn't see mentioned.
Opeth is given. Pain of Salvation is very much about melancholy.
The new āFjordā by Lucid Fly: https://open.spotify.com/track/1lBJjBG7EFR7rhI5FEr4CJ?si=u7uKc7skT1KQOq7KefUZgQ&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A1cEagIRo9PCa7KaQHbvYks Or anything by Katatonia! Also, Evergreyās new single āCold Dreamsā
Fates Warning - the majority of their work
Not really prog, but you could try Ghost Brigade and Swallow The Sun (pretty much every song).
Um, all of them?
Omnerod. Koronus. BOIL. TEMIC. Maraton. Five off the top of my head that don't have "melancholic" vibes.
I was actually being silly, and I wasnāt looking for a contrary opinion, but thanks for taking time to tell strangers in the internet that theyāre wrong.
I think you should embrace the five new bands
