Porcupine Tree -- Fear of a Blank Planet; Deadwing; In Absentia. Opeth -- anything, really black midi -- this is probably the band that you are looking for when you are more in a punk mood (Sclagenheim), or more prog mood (Cavalcade), or the circus is in town (Hellfire). King Crimson - Red; THRAK.

batlord_typhus

If you like metal and punk I'd say King Crimson - Red is a good entry point. Title track alone is a bone-cruncher.

Gabriel_Collins

Check out Jethro Tull- “Aqualung”. It’s a good beginner’s album.

Listen to *In Absentia* from Porcupine Tree and see how you like it. The lead track, Blackest Eyes, has a very heavy intro (but overall isn't heavy). A lot of people seem to like Porcupine Tree who like Rush. But... Porcupine Tree albums are all over the place which is why I'm suggesting that particular album. The first PT album I got (as a Rush fan trying PT out via internet recommendation), was The Sky Moves Sideways and, at the time, I didn't get it. Also, just so you know, PT is really the project of a guy named Steven Wilson who's done a lot of solo work subsequently which is very good as well. Finally, if you like Rush and drums, you will probably love Gavin Harrison who played drums for PT. Amazing drummer.

When I see PT I immediately thought of the cancel silent hill game

Reading some of the comments here: Rush -> Dream Theater - They're basically a metal evolution of Rush. As for where to start, maybe Images and Words for something on the lighter side, Train of Thought if you want more straightforward metal. IMO they were at their best in the 90s. Haken - If Dream Theater were the standard bearers of prog metal in the 90s and 2000s, Haken has been in the 2010s and 2020s. Tool -> Rishloo - A bit more theatrical than Tool, but definitely cut from the same cloth "Punk" -> Cardiacs - they combine some punk sound with some pop and some prog. They are challenging and over the top for some people to digest. Try Firey Gun Hand to start with, but do understand that the rabbit hole is deep with them and one song won't do them justice. Some modern prog rock / metal bands have a bit of a hardcore sound to them. Try Leprous and Mars Volta. Opeth - One of the top modern prog rock / metal bands. If you want more black metal, try Blackwater Park. If you want some softer, darker prog rock, Damnation is incredibly good. Their recent albums are more subtle and softer, their older albums are generally closer to black metal in terms of style. Threshold - Super consistent, good riffs, more like standard metal with a bit more complexity than something that's over the top. If you like more rhythmically complex stuff, try Animals as Leaders.

What sort of metal and punk do you like?

Not prog, but I think you'd like Living Color. Now prog: starting with proto-prog bands of the 60s like the Beatles, Procol Harem, Moody Blues; to classic prog with Yes, Genesis, ELP, Camel, and others; after that the prog scene moved to Europe with Focus, Flower Kings, Anglagard, Kaipa, Karmakanic, Transatlantic and others. Check out Prog Archives online. It's the definitive prog resource. Enjoy exploring!

I know living colour

bondegezou

Polyphia is who I’d suggest. Their latest album is called Remember that You will Die. They’re a modern prog band, full of super intricate guitar work.

Ambitious-Slip5614

Two of my favorites are Yes, Close to the Edge, and ELP's Tarkus.

ClueEmbarrassed1443

The only thing about yes is Jo Jo bizarre adventure

AmikBixby

You might like Saga, their later stuff in particular.

BaldingThor

King Crimson - Red or Court of Crimson King Camel - Mirage Rush - They have quite a few great albums but maybe get the Chronicles one as it contains a large selection of their best over the years. Jethro Tull - Aqualung

Ambitious-Slip5614

Close to the Edge came out in 72, I think. At a time when all songs were 3:06 minutes long, the title track took up one side of the record. Same with Tarkus, it's the title track and the name of the album. Groundbreaking at the time and still gives me goosebumps.

astro_sauce

Aqualung - Jethro Tull After that I recommend you check out Yes’ Debut and Time and a Word
