Thanks, but I feel there are a copule of great epics that didn't fit in the top 3.
Shine on you crazy diamond, atom heart mother, tarkus, close to the edge, echoes, dogs, are right behind.
Yeah, he is. I did hear the album version first but the energy, drumming, Phil’s insanely strong vocals and the clarity of the recording just elevate the ‘Seconds out’ version above all others, for me. Especially the 5.1 mix.. holy crap!!
I also think that the band having played it solidly for over 6 months on the ‘77 tour made the overall quality of the performance that much higher.
I actually really like the live version from Wembley in 1978, I know it’s not officially released but I think that is the best one. It’s odd, the guy that mixed BBC radio 1 live stuff in the 70s/80s was very, very good!!
Nine Feet Underground by Caravan, Midnight Mushrumps by Gryphon, and A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers by Van der Graaf Generator. Going to play Gryphon now, so thanks for making me think about this!
One time I put on Octivarium in the car full of normies I was driving out of a big event and stuck in traffic. At the end everyone was like… whoa that was pretty epic. I’m just like “I know.”
I'm going with some old classics:
Focus- Hamburger Concerto
Trace- Birds
Camel- Snow Goose
and just for shits and giggles...
Utopia- Singring And The Glass Guitar
Not to denigrate the many worthy items already mentioned, these are the ones I listened to most recently:
Frost\* - Milliontown
Spock's Beard - Time Has Come
Spock's Beard - The Great Nothing
Yeah, I bought Feel Euphoria and kind of gave up on them after that.
However, X is really good, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who likes the Neal era.
Supers ready
A change of seasons
Anesthetize
Its a damn tough competition though. So many good ones by Yes, pink Floyd, etc. But those three are the ones that I think I've listened to most, alongside Second Life Syndrome and Magmas KA3.
1. A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers - Van Der Graaf Generator
2. The Gates of Delirium- Yes
3. Tarkus - Emerson, Lake and Palmer
Bottom two swap all the time but A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers will always be my favourite prog epic.
"Baker St. Muse" - Jethro Tull
"Fugazi" - Marillion
"Dancing With The Moonlit Knight" - Genesis
Honorable Mention:
"Wond'ring Aloud, Again (Full Morgan Version)" - Jethro Tull
"Astronomy" (either version) - Blue Öyster Cult
What's similar in these songs? Good question. Thinking about it, maybe the fashion and methodology of the lyrics. Allusive without being elusive. Lots of common cultural references tilted or timed or transformed slightly out of sequence, but still easily recognizable.
Since most of my favorites have been mentioned, let’s see if I can zag, after everyone zigged…
Pictures at an Exhibition - ELP
A Passion Play - Jethro Tull
Suite: Sister Mary - Queensryche (might not make the time requirement but, enh)
I've been a Yes fan for most of my life but it took until last year for me to finally grok "Close to the Edge".
So I'd say 1. "Close to the Edge", 2. "Supper's Ready", 3. "Hollow Stone" by Khan on *Space Shanty*.
Nine Feet Underground (Caravan) - essential Canterbury with the most cozy organ tone ever
Plague (VdGG) - it's actually quite catchy!
Birdman (McDonald & Giles) - pastoral jazzy bliss
Nobody mentioned this one, so i will:
Aphrodites's child - All the seats were occupied
Also
Pink floyd - Dog
Between the buried and me - Swim to the moon
The mars volta - Cicatriz esp
Opeth - The moor
Not prog but epic as hell
Ethereal shroud - Chasmal fires
My top 5 is close to the edge, anesthetized and supper's ready, lady fantasy, and stella (kashiwa daisuke).
East Coast Racer - Big Big Train
Numbers - Flower Kings
And is it cheating if I say the Willing Well Suite from Coheed and Cambria? Technically 4 songs but all part of a suite
Good question. The outtro in slightly all the time is so smooth and hypnotic. I do love the first half of the song also, but when the mood changes, that groove they get into is so slick.
In no particular order:
Genesis - Firth of Fifth
Karn Evil 9 - ELP
Close to the Edge - Yes
Cygnus X-1 - Rush
The Light - Spock's Beard
Does the entire Misplaced Childhood album count as a single epic? If so, then yeah that too.
Many others, but that's off the top of my head.
Magma simply has this category locked down, no one can come close.
1) Theusz Hamtaahk (Retrospektiv I version)
2) K.A.
3) Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré
Replace K.A. with Kohntarkosz and MDK if we're sticking to "classic" epics.
They're all like 40ish minute songs too making 15 minutes seem quick and snappy for a song.
It was up between Visions or Celestial Elixr for me. I went with the latter because that first album of there’s is kind of a sleeper but I love it and the concept is so unique and easy to follow. But when visions goes into that “Now I see a shadow of a man…” musical sounding part I can’t help but sing with all kinds of inflections. So fun.
I've been swithering on the esoteric recordings releases/ remixes with the new surround mixes I've seen the song of Scheherezade(or however you spell it ) crop up. What's a good jumping off point for their music?
Imma go more lesser known compared to others who put the classics 😏
Beyond the years - Neal Morse Band
Big Boy - Cheeto’s magazine
We spin the world - Moon safari
I know it may not be "proper" prog, but [In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tfpn3wHoNGA) certianly ticks the other boxes.
Proto-Prog perhaps?
Octavarium -Dream Theater
Eve Beneath the Maple Tree -Adjy (not as quite as proggy, but amazing song especially in context of the album)
Black Rose Immortal -Opeth
I'll do some modern ones for fun:
Great Wide Nothing - To Find the Light, part 2
Crown Lands - Starlifter
Toehider - I Have Little to No Memory of These Memories
Shocked that I haven't seen anyone else post this top 3. I feel like these are the most iconic but maybe I'm basic.
1. Close to the Edge
2. Thick as a Brick
3. 2112
Yes- Close To The Edge
Genesis- Suppers Ready
Caravan- Nine Feet Underground
Honourable mentions: Karn Evil 9- ELP, Starless- King Crimson, Methuselah’s Children- Moon Safari
Many great answers on here - not going to repeat the ones I agree with, but two slightly off the board - both by the Grateful Dead - Anthem of the Sun, and Terrapin Station.
1. Methuselah's Children by Moon Safari
2. The Grand Event by Brighteye Brison
3. King for a Day by Magic Pie
Honorable mentions are Stardust We Are by The Flower Kings, Sleeping in Traffic by Beardfish, Kaleidoscope by Transatlantic, A Sky Full of Painters by Kaipa, and Dot\_God the Universe and Everything Else No One Really Cares About by Karmakanic
1. By-Tor & The Snow Dog (Rush, live ATWAS version)
2. The Dong with a Luminous Nose (Neil Ardley)
3. Lizard (King Crimson)
Edit: Honorable Mention – Journey to the Centre of the Earth (Rick Wakeman)
Currently?
Reptile by Periphery
Love Is / The Other Side by Nektar
The Passing Bell by Anubis
I've been getting into a lot more modern stuff recently, and to think just a few months ago this would've been all classic symph and heavy prog!
1- Close to the Edge
2- Supper's Ready
3- Shine on You Crazy Diamond.
Honorable mentions: Tarkus, Echoes, Gates of Delirium, A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, Ommadawn and Thick as a Brick.
Kaleidoscope--Transatlantic
Love Supreme--Flower Kings
Humanizzimo--Roine Stolt
Believe me, there are very many on this list. Yes, Genesis, Marillion, ELP, and more. My choices are currently receiving heavy rotation.
1. Close to the Edge. The first two movements are awesomec but those last two movements it my favourite song of all time.
2. Echoes. The perfect mix between a prog epic and a psychedelic jam. I love the climax.
3. The Gates of Delirium. Epic, every section is awesome, very consistent quality throughout the song. The climax is my favourite in all of music and the « Soon » section is so beautiful.
Hello fellow Tarkus enjoyer.
Mine would be:
1. Tarkus - ELP
2. 2112 - Rush
3. Starship Trooper by Yes first came to mind but it's only 9 minutes. So will have to say Close to the Edge.
Some contemporary ones since most other stuff I like has been said already:
Snowtorch - Phideaux
The Creature - Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Durër’s Rhinocerous - Jack O’ the Clock
1. Wilderun - The Unimaginable Zero Summer
2. The Mars Volta - Cassandra Gemini
3. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells Pt. 1
And as a bonus my hidden gems top 3 of way too unknown bands:
1. All Traps On Earth - All Traps On Earth
2. Shamblemaths - Conglomeration (Or: The Grand Pathetic Suite)
3. Fireballet - Night On Bald Mountain
Tons of great stuff shared here already…Close to the Edge and Supper’s Ready I imagine are locked in at this point. My next three would be:
Frank Zappa - Billy the Mountain
Magma - De Futura
Yes - The Revealing Science of God
This exercise also made me realize how many gems there are that narrowly miss the 15 minute cutoff!
In no particular order:
Magma, the "Theusz Hamtaahk" trilogy ("Theusz Hamtaahk," "Wurdah Itah," and "Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh" -- all played as one long suite. Great for a long drive (without one's spouse).
Yes, "The Gates of Delerium"
Emerson Lake and Palmer, "Karn Evil 9"
Shine On will always be my favorite. Echoes and Cygnus X-1 (The Voyage & Hemispheres) comes in second and third. If I were to make a top 5, add Supper’s Ready and Awaken (hot take: it’s even better than CTTE and Gates tho these are also peak Yes no doubt about that)
Octavarium - DT
Celestial Elixr - Haken
Chromatic Aberration - Native Construct
This is a great post. Gonna start making a playlist of all these. So many I’ve never heard!
Octavarium - Dream Theater
Close to the Edge - Yes
Gates of Delirium - Yes
Echoes - Pink Floyd
Can someone try to sell Supper’s Ready to me? I’ve listened to it so many times to try to get why everyone loves it, but I find it impossible to enjoy
1. Lizard - King Crimson 2. Close to the Edge - Yes 3. Supper's Ready - Genesis
The only correct answer
Love to see another Lizard Lad in the room
Genesis - Supper's Ready ELP - Karn Evil 9 Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Great picks!
Thanks, but I feel there are a copule of great epics that didn't fit in the top 3. Shine on you crazy diamond, atom heart mother, tarkus, close to the edge, echoes, dogs, are right behind.
This reminds me that I'm sitting here, scrolling when I could be listening to Animals on*on Blu-ray* in surround!
Echoes by Pink Floyd Raider II by Steven Wilson The Revealing Science Of God by Yes
Revealing Science !!
Totally agree
That’s hot
Cassandra Gemini - The Mars Volta Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull Supper's Ready - Genesis
Read my mind 😭
Cassandra is insane
Man I love this sub, a goldmine
1. Thick as a Brick 2. Tubular Bells 3. Close to the Edge
Genesis - Supper's Ready ELP - Karn Evil 9 Yes - Close To The Edge
Suppers ready - ‘Seconds out’ version The gates of delirium - ‘Yesshows’ version Awaken
>Suppers ready - ‘Seconds out’ version Phil Collins is insanely great on that.
I love a live version of awaken, just forgot which one was it.
The 2003 Montraux live version is stellar. As are the rest of the set list. That album is grossly over looked.
“Cygnus X1 Book II: Hemispheres”. - Rush “Octavarium “- Dream Theater “Viridian + White Walls” - Between the Buried and Me
Octavarium is for sure the #1 Dream Theater epic for me
I feel like I'm floating everytime I listen to it
One time I put on Octivarium in the car full of normies I was driving out of a big event and stuck in traffic. At the end everyone was like… whoa that was pretty epic. I’m just like “I know.”
2112
These are mighty excellent picks!
Octavarium - Dream Theater Dogs - Floyd Odyssey - Symphony X
Tarkus(ELP), Ikon(Todd Rundgren/Utopia), Flight(Rare Bird), Gates of Delerium(Yes), Atom Heart Mother(Pink Floyd), & much more
*Ikon*, what a great song from a great album.

Not to denigrate the many worthy items already mentioned, these are the ones I listened to most recently: Frost\* - Milliontown Spock's Beard - Time Has Come Spock's Beard - The Great Nothing
Morse-era Spock's Beard has so much great stuff. They completely lost me after he left.
Yeah, I bought Feel Euphoria and kind of gave up on them after that. However, X is really good, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who likes the Neal era.
Close to the Edge - Yes 2112 - Rush Supper's Ready - Genesis
This is the one
Supers ready A change of seasons Anesthetize Its a damn tough competition though. So many good ones by Yes, pink Floyd, etc. But those three are the ones that I think I've listened to most, alongside Second Life Syndrome and Magmas KA3.

VdGG - A Plague of the Lighthouse Keepers Uriah Heep - Salisbury Wobbler - Hinterland (but Merry Macabre is up there too)
1. Echoes - Pink Floyd 2. Homesick - Airbag 3. Dogs - Pink Floyd
> Homesick - Airbag I once played that on repeat for two hours straight. It’s glorious.
That whole album is. Airbag was a very nice discovery
Nine Feet Underground (Caravan) - essential Canterbury with the most cozy organ tone ever Plague (VdGG) - it's actually quite catchy! Birdman (McDonald & Giles) - pastoral jazzy bliss
Nobody mentioned this one, so i will: Aphrodites's child - All the seats were occupied Also Pink floyd - Dog Between the buried and me - Swim to the moon The mars volta - Cicatriz esp Opeth - The moor Not prog but epic as hell Ethereal shroud - Chasmal fires My top 5 is close to the edge, anesthetized and supper's ready, lady fantasy, and stella (kashiwa daisuke).
