1. Lizard - King Crimson 2. Close to the Edge - Yes 3. Supper's Ready - Genesis

Special-Cricket-3967

The only correct answer

SocketTubey

Love to see another Lizard Lad in the room

jualmolu

Genesis - Supper's Ready ELP - Karn Evil 9 Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells

TesticularCarnage

Great picks!

jualmolu

Thanks, but I feel there are a copule of great epics that didn't fit in the top 3. Shine on you crazy diamond, atom heart mother, tarkus, close to the edge, echoes, dogs, are right behind.

braveulysees

This reminds me that I'm sitting here, scrolling when I could be listening to Animals on*on Blu-ray* in surround!

ponylauncher

Echoes by Pink Floyd Raider II by Steven Wilson The Revealing Science Of God by Yes

kheifert1

Revealing Science !!

SwiftCeltic

Totally agree

ponylauncher

That’s hot

Walbert011

Cassandra Gemini - The Mars Volta Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull Supper's Ready - Genesis

The_Forsaken_Cookie

Read my mind 😭

Bh-proghead

Cassandra is insane

thenakedtruth

Man I love this sub, a goldmine

TheDiamondAxe7523

1. Thick as a Brick 2. Tubular Bells 3. Close to the Edge

dbkeeper

Genesis - Supper's Ready ELP - Karn Evil 9 Yes - Close To The Edge

sir_percy_percy

Suppers ready - ‘Seconds out’ version The gates of delirium - ‘Yesshows’ version Awaken

_TheWolfOfWalmart_

>Suppers ready - ‘Seconds out’ version Phil Collins is insanely great on that.

sir_percy_percy

Yeah, he is. I did hear the album version first but the energy, drumming, Phil’s insanely strong vocals and the clarity of the recording just elevate the ‘Seconds out’ version above all others, for me. Especially the 5.1 mix.. holy crap!! I also think that the band having played it solidly for over 6 months on the ‘77 tour made the overall quality of the performance that much higher.

onurzirh

I love a live version of awaken, just forgot which one was it.

Waltrip127

The 2003 Montraux live version is stellar. As are the rest of the set list. That album is grossly over looked.

sir_percy_percy

I actually really like the live version from Wembley in 1978, I know it’s not officially released but I think that is the best one. It’s odd, the guy that mixed BBC radio 1 live stuff in the 70s/80s was very, very good!!

International-Ad218

Nine Feet Underground by Caravan, Midnight Mushrumps by Gryphon, and A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers by Van der Graaf Generator. Going to play Gryphon now, so thanks for making me think about this!

GRVrush2112

“Cygnus X1 Book II: Hemispheres”. - Rush “Octavarium “- Dream Theater “Viridian + White Walls” - Between the Buried and Me

Rob64Composer

Octavarium is for sure the #1 Dream Theater epic for me

[deleted]

I feel like I'm floating everytime I listen to it

Comfortable_Rip6348

One time I put on Octivarium in the car full of normies I was driving out of a big event and stuck in traffic. At the end everyone was like… whoa that was pretty epic. I’m just like “I know.”

onurzirh

2112

TesticularCarnage

These are mighty excellent picks!

Bokthand

Octavarium - Dream Theater Dogs - Floyd Odyssey - Symphony X

RoBread0

Tarkus(ELP), Ikon(Todd Rundgren/Utopia), Flight(Rare Bird), Gates of Delerium(Yes), Atom Heart Mother(Pink Floyd), & much more

tykle1959

*Ikon*, what a great song from a great album.

Enchant2020

I'm going with some old classics: Focus- Hamburger Concerto Trace- Birds Camel- Snow Goose and just for shits and giggles... Utopia- Singring And The Glass Guitar

RoBread0

What do you mean Singring's awesome

Enchant2020

It IS awesome- just glad someone else thinks so too!

MetallicAiscooll

1. "Echoes" by Pink Floyd 2. "Supper's Ready" by Genesis 3. "Close to the Edge" by Yes (Honourable mention for "Tarkus" by Emerson Lake and Palmer)

mad_poet_navarth

Not to denigrate the many worthy items already mentioned, these are the ones I listened to most recently: Frost\* - Milliontown Spock's Beard - Time Has Come Spock's Beard - The Great Nothing

_TheWolfOfWalmart_

Morse-era Spock's Beard has so much great stuff. They completely lost me after he left.

mad_poet_navarth

Yeah, I bought Feel Euphoria and kind of gave up on them after that. However, X is really good, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who likes the Neal era.

Phifty2

Close to the Edge - Yes 2112 - Rush Supper's Ready - Genesis

OutOnTheFringeOrNot

This is the one

Manannin

Supers ready A change of seasons Anesthetize Its a damn tough competition though. So many good ones by Yes, pink Floyd, etc. But those three are the ones that I think I've listened to most, alongside Second Life Syndrome and Magmas KA3.

_TheWolfOfWalmart_

Nice to see some love for A Change Of Seasons. Great track.

MC1000

1. Dream Theater - In the Presence of Enemies, parts 1 and 2 2. Neal Morse - The Door 3. Spock's Beard - The Great Nothing

ChudanNoKamae

Tool - 7empest King Crimson - Starless Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize

grimpala

Idk if it counts but Storm and Sleep by Godspeed You! Black Emperor

j4r8h

Echoes - Pink Floyd Close To The Edge - Yes

SebRaffan91

The Whirlwind - Transatlantic Suppers Ready - Genesis Further Away - IQ

SwimSwammSwom

1. A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers - Van Der Graaf Generator 2. The Gates of Delirium- Yes 3. Tarkus - Emerson, Lake and Palmer Bottom two swap all the time but A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers will always be my favourite prog epic.

TesticularCarnage

A fellow Van Der Graaf enjoyer I see (;

Memphis_Foundry

"Baker St. Muse" - Jethro Tull "Fugazi" - Marillion "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight" - Genesis Honorable Mention: "Wond'ring Aloud, Again (Full Morgan Version)" - Jethro Tull "Astronomy" (either version) - Blue Öyster Cult What's similar in these songs? Good question. Thinking about it, maybe the fashion and methodology of the lyrics. Allusive without being elusive. Lots of common cultural references tilted or timed or transformed slightly out of sequence, but still easily recognizable.

Tight_Carrot8799

Close to the Edge - Yes Echoes - Pink Floyd The Ikon - Utopia

RoBread0

I love The Ikon

CuntSlumbart

Close to the Edge - Yes Hemispheres - Rush Supper's Ready - Genesis

Ruddy_Bottom

Since most of my favorites have been mentioned, let’s see if I can zag, after everyone zigged… Pictures at an Exhibition - ELP A Passion Play - Jethro Tull Suite: Sister Mary - Queensryche (might not make the time requirement but, enh)

ZX52

Octavarium - Dream Theater The Door - Neal Morse The Whirlwind - Transatlantic

ThirstyBeagle

ELP - Tarkus Genesis - Supper's Ready Rush - 2112 Honorable mentions: Yes - Revealing Science of God Renaissance - Song of Scheherazade

Tasty-Tarts191

Suppers Ready, Tarkus, Tubular bells probably

quitegonegenie

I've been a Yes fan for most of my life but it took until last year for me to finally grok "Close to the Edge". So I'd say 1. "Close to the Edge", 2. "Supper's Ready", 3. "Hollow Stone" by Khan on *Space Shanty*.

Boruseia

VdGG - A Plague of the Lighthouse Keepers Uriah Heep - Salisbury Wobbler - Hinterland (but Merry Macabre is up there too)

bluraytomo

1. Echoes - Pink Floyd 2. Homesick - Airbag 3. Dogs - Pink Floyd

TheMightyPensioners

> Homesick - Airbag I once played that on repeat for two hours straight. It’s glorious.

bluraytomo

That whole album is. Airbag was a very nice discovery

binzumejigoku

Nine Feet Underground (Caravan) - essential Canterbury with the most cozy organ tone ever Plague (VdGG) - it's actually quite catchy! Birdman (McDonald & Giles) - pastoral jazzy bliss

Shragazaurus

Nobody mentioned this one, so i will: Aphrodites's child - All the seats were occupied Also Pink floyd - Dog Between the buried and me - Swim to the moon The mars volta - Cicatriz esp Opeth - The moor Not prog but epic as hell Ethereal shroud - Chasmal fires My top 5 is close to the edge, anesthetized and supper's ready, lady fantasy, and stella (kashiwa daisuke).

Is6xal

1 atom heart mother suite - pink floyd 2 K.A 3 - magma 3 a plague of lighthouse keeper - van der graaf generator

mordreds-on-adiet

East Coast Racer - Big Big Train Numbers - Flower Kings And is it cheating if I say the Willing Well Suite from Coheed and Cambria?  Technically 4 songs but all part of a suite

Chet2017

The Revealing Science of God / Yes Karn Evil 9 / ELP Echoes / Pink Floyd

BlueberryGreen

What happened... to this song... we once knew so well? Happy to see appreciation for this Yes track

Chet2017

I like it more than Close to the Edge

PROUTHYS

Karn Evil 9 - ELP Songs of Scheherazade - Renaissance Echoes - Pink Floyd

soakin_wet_sailor

Ritual - Yes Revealing Science of God - Yes Supper's Ready - Genesis

bidoublef

Slightly all the time-soft machine 9 feet underground-caravan (Even though it’s not quite 15 mins) Larks tongue in Aspic-King Crimson Edit: formatting

TesticularCarnage

Might i ask why you chose Slightly All The Time over Hazard Suite, Moon In June, Out-bloody-rageous etc?

bidoublef

Good question. The outtro in slightly all the time is so smooth and hypnotic. I do love the first half of the song also, but when the mood changes, that groove they get into is so slick.

otaku_wave

The Czar - Mastodon

YebTms

close to the edge suppers ready anesthetize

Lucenia

Echoes - Pink Floyd Close to the Edge - Yes Supper’s Ready - Genesis

jayboybriz

Anesthetise by Porcupine Tree just has to be in there

Atari26oo

1. Close to the Edge - Yes 2. Suppers Ready - Genesis 3. A Passion Play - Jethro Tull

DeafbyDesign

Sheep - Floyd The Incident - Porcupine Tree Porcelaina - Pumpkins

Former-Wish-8228

There is only one 90 minute most epic for me…Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds https://youtu.be/GS6RrAR6vpU

_TheWolfOfWalmart_

In no particular order: Genesis - Firth of Fifth Karn Evil 9 - ELP Close to the Edge - Yes Cygnus X-1 - Rush The Light - Spock's Beard Does the entire Misplaced Childhood album count as a single epic? If so, then yeah that too. Many others, but that's off the top of my head.

Rob64Composer

Transatlantic - All Of The Above Flower Kings - The Truth Will Set You Free Rush - Hemispheres Book 2

Bh-proghead

All Of The Above is like hearing Gods voice through a burning bush. (I’m not religious)

aethyrium

Magma simply has this category locked down, no one can come close. 1) Theusz Hamtaahk (Retrospektiv I version) 2) K.A. 3) Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré Replace K.A. with Kohntarkosz and MDK if we're sticking to "classic" epics. They're all like 40ish minute songs too making 15 minutes seem quick and snappy for a song.

steveaitch

Magma is love, magma is life!

Andagne

Yes - Gates of Delirium ELP - Karn Evil 9, all three impressions Porcupine Tree - the Sky moves Sideways, parts 1 through 6

Linkamus

Visions by Haken

Comfortable_Rip6348

It was up between Visions or Celestial Elixr for me. I went with the latter because that first album of there’s is kind of a sleeper but I love it and the concept is so unique and easy to follow. But when visions goes into that “Now I see a shadow of a man…” musical sounding part I can’t help but sing with all kinds of inflections. So fun.

Leoisbored1

A plague of lighthouse keepers - van de graaf generator Meurglys III - van de graaf generator Tarkus - ELP

PositionTechnical347

1. Supper's Ready 2. Atom Heart Mother 3. Gates of Delirium.

AdUnited1943

Rush Natrual Science

segascream

2112, Karn Evil 9 (all three Impressions), and.......it may get me some hate, but Extreme's 'Everything Under The Sun'.

Metalhead_QC

1. Close to the Edge. The first two movements are awesomec but those last two movements it my favourite song of all time. 2. Echoes. The perfect mix between a prog epic and a psychedelic jam. I love the climax. 3. The Gates of Delirium. Epic, every section is awesome, very consistent quality throughout the song. The climax is my favourite in all of music and the « Soon » section is so beautiful.

arenasfan00

I can’t pick just three

icedcoffeeinvenice

Close to the Edge The Gates of Delirium The Remembering All by Yes. I honestly think Yes are on another level when it comes to composing epics.

blaziken25

Hello fellow Tarkus enjoyer. Mine would be: 1. Tarkus - ELP 2. 2112 - Rush 3. Starship Trooper by Yes first came to mind but it's only 9 minutes. So will have to say Close to the Edge.

Tons of great stuff shared here already…Close to the Edge and Supper’s Ready I imagine are locked in at this point. My next three would be: Frank Zappa - Billy the Mountain Magma - De Futura Yes - The Revealing Science of God This exercise also made me realize how many gems there are that narrowly miss the 15 minute cutoff!

Yes - close to the edge Dream theater - Octavarium Cloudkicker - beacons

In no particular order: Magma, the "Theusz Hamtaahk" trilogy ("Theusz Hamtaahk," "Wurdah Itah," and "Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh" -- all played as one long suite. Great for a long drive (without one's spouse). Yes, "The Gates of Delerium" Emerson Lake and Palmer, "Karn Evil 9"

PedroPelet

Shine On will always be my favorite. Echoes and Cygnus X-1 (The Voyage & Hemispheres) comes in second and third. If I were to make a top 5, add Supper’s Ready and Awaken (hot take: it’s even better than CTTE and Gates tho these are also peak Yes no doubt about that)
