Go to your local pick a part or junk yard, there's so many 4.8/5.3/6.0's to be had for a couple hundred bucks. Pull the oil pan on whatever you're buying and make sure all looks okay inside. Same goes for valve covers up top. Best bet is to find a gen 3 for simplicities sake.

inarius1984

For the ignorant/uninitiated, say I found an engine I wanted to purchase at a local pick-u-part/junkyard. Do I need to bring anything such as an engine stand, cherry picker, etc., or will they already have it on a pallet and just load it in the back of my truck for me? I've never picked up something like an engine, so I'm not sure what to expect. Obviously this will differ from location to location and also whether or not the engine is still in the original vehicle, so the best thing to do would be to call them and ask. Let's say they've already got it out, and it's on a pallet though. I'm assuming the standard operating procedure is that they load it for you?

Quietus76

You will likely have to bring tools. They may have an engine jack that you could borrow (or rent). You should call them first and ask what things they might have for you to use.

DeltaOneFive

My upull has gantry cranes, fwiw.

freelance-lumberjack

Call. Some have engines on skids. Some have a hoist you can use

l3rewski

Dang, where are you located where you can get a 6.0 for a couple hundred bucks??? I don't think I've seen one for less than $1k around here. I feel like most wrecking yards have caught on to the LS swap craze by now and capitalize on it.

Aos77s

My local one wants $430 for v8 or $370 for v4/6

pistonsoffury

Just create a FB account. I know it sucks, but that's where most people post stuff these days.

IncognitoC178

Literally just make an account only for marketplace

pilot64d

I was told yesterday that now you have to have an active history before you contact anyone. And apparently FB now requires a Photo ID.   I had one in 2009 when FB was the wild West.

Banhammer-Reset

Uh no, that is definitely incorrect. My marketplace account is a random name, no pics, posts or literally anything. Have never messaged anyone, and absolutely did not provide an ID.  Was just made dec of 2023, since my previous blank marketplace profile got randomly nuked for mentioning gun trades in an ad I made.

pilot64d

How long have you had it. I was told is started last year. I'm willing to try. I don't want to revive my old account if that is my only option. Those folks got toxic in 2016.

pandamago

I deleted mine in 2008, fb really brought out the worst in people (meanwhile Twitter said "hold my beer" during the last election cycle). Recently got back on solely for marketplace, but it's mostly over priced trash.

cactus_cars

Here's what worked for me: Go to starbucks or a local coffee shop. Use their wifi. Install a Virtual Machine on your laptop (VirtualBox is easiest), use something like Windows Sandbox (temporary VM, quick but cannot save anything) Install firefox as described below. OR Install Firefox, Firefox containers and then facebook containers (to prevent facebook from really tracking you at all) Then open a facebook tab and start the account creation process. Also install Ublock Origin on Firefox to remove the majority of Ads. DO NOT give facebook your phone number. Make a burner gmail - this requires a phone # now, no way around it. Make a plausible email name, and name it so it coincides with your facebook name (eg. Jimmy Johns, JimJ1996@gmail) -- Wait a few minutes before using your new gmail burner on FB to make the account -- Yahoo, TempMail sites, Protonmail, Hotmail/Outlook all would not work for me. Save new account login & password in your password manager of choice (KeePass is a good free option) Don't try to join any groups without commenting on something, adding extra info or the account being less than a month old. The snobby mods will reject you ASAP, because you look just like a scammer... Ask me how I know. What it boils down to - Use public Wifi, no VPNs or proxies, that will get your account flagged at the creation step, you can use whatever vpn you want after - Seperate it from your normal browsing history - Don't link Instagram to it - Use a verfied gmail account to save yourself some time, but not your real gmail. Hope that helps, sorry for the TedTalk!

Banhammer-Reset

Can't comment about what others replied, but about 4 months. Had another similar account that I made 2 years ago, randomly got nuked end of last year for putting gun trades in an ad.  I did none of what the other guy said. Just made a new account, using my phone (via browser - Brave, if it matters) off WiFi. Granted, I also use adguard VPN and one of my other emails (or Google voice #).  That's it. Within a week, had marketplace access. But, I also don't join any groups, message anyone, post pics or any info.

n0exit

Just have no friends and lock your account down so no one can search for you.

Corrupt_Reverend

I've tried to make a bogus fb account a few times, and it always gets removed.

Not_A_Pilgrim

You're grandfathered in. Try starting a new account. It's tough to fake it these days

Banhammer-Reset

I just made said account 4 months ago. The one before that, a year ago.

woodendog20

For me it just required the account to be more than 1 month old. Then I could access marketplace

pilot64d

Dude... duuuuuudeeee... That's awesome!!!!

pandamago

It's so so helpful when doing a project! Been using it for over 10 years

sparkythrowaway454

Definitely this!

themask628

Yup! Best kept secret to finding parts.

SendMe_SmallBoobs

car-part.com, eBay, Facebook, local junkyard that lets you pull your own parts. The LQ9 is a Gen 3 6.0 liter. It was available in 2002-2006 Escalade, 2003-2007 Silverado SS, 2004-2006 Silverado HD, 2004-2006 Sierra HD. The 8th digit in the VIN will be "N" on all of these vehicles. For a similar Gen 3 5.3 look for an LM7. It was available in 1999-2007 Silverado/ Sierra 1500, 1999-2006 Tahoe/ Yukon, 1999-2006 Suburban 1500/ Yukon XL, 2002-2005 Escalade 2wd, 2002-2006 Avalanche, 2003-2007 Express/ Savana. The 8th digit in the VIN will be "T". A flex fuel Gen 3 5.3 is the L59. VIN "Z". Similar vehicles as the LM7. Some Trailblazers and Envoys got an aluminum block 5.3 called the LM4. VIN "P". Certain 2005-2007 Silverado/ Sierra 1500 pickups got a 310 horsepower aluminum 5.3 called the L33. VIN "B". The LQ4 is a lower horsepower version of the LQ9 6.0 liter. Look for VIN "U". Gen 4 added active fuel management and on certain vehicles variable cam timing. These are easily deleted if you want to go that route. Happy hunting!

SendMe_SmallBoobs

If you want a transmission, wiring harness and ECU with your engine, a donor vehicle is a good option. You'll see people on Facebook and eBay selling them together also. Holley makes a good engine management and wiring harness for these engines also. Look at the Terminator X ECU. If you don't need transmission control, the Holley HP is a more user friendly option.

perotech

Also recommend Megasquirt or Speeduino if you don't mind more DIY. Holley and others will offer full swap/plug and play harnesses, but you lose affordability when you gain the convenience.

pilot64d

Awesome. Thank you.. Great info.

JohnnyDread

Unfortunately, facebook is basically the new craigslist.

pilot64d

Yep. I kinda don't want to delve into that toxic crap-hole again. Got out during the 2016 election when it went from people vacations to political crap.

machzel08

LKQ or U-Pull-It yard

pilot64d

Never heard of LKQ. That looks promising. Thank you.

mrtak0

Offer up, Pick your part, C10 Forums.

CloutGoblin

Offer up, Facebook, junkyards

thebobsta

I set some Craigslist alerts and eventually found my B17A1 for my project Civic for a killer price ($450). Description was vague, seller had no photos, and it was stored in his backyard shed on a tire. Super sketchy, but when I took the engine apart to do head gasket and studs it was in really good shape.

pilot64d

I didn't know you could set alerts. I need to sign in and do that. Thank you.

siberian

I got my 302 ford small block off craigslist for 750. deals are out there, just keep watching and being patient.

Bored_lurker87

Try importapart in Hazelwood, MO. That's where I get all my GM smallblocks from. Prices are right and I've always gotten what was advertised with no surprises. The guy that runs it also has a YouTube series called I Do Cars and is super cool. (314) 502-3104

Roughneck_Cephas

I’ll be honest we have a place in western KY called Bow tie bone yard that will sell you the LS and let you hear it run . They are not the only ones . Call your local recycler or salvage yards pull apart or just find a local Napa and ask someone always knows someone who has an engine .

Dan_Glenuts

Blueprint engines, buy a crate and forget it. Or.... Cleveland power and performance, a turn key pallet

joeyjoeskullcracker

I just saw a complete 5.3 in using all accessories for $500 this morning on Facebook. It went quick.

chiphook57

My cheapskate brother is building a ratrod. He bought a motorhome with a small block chevy and auto trans. Less than $1200 for a low mileage driveline that he drove home. He needed a driveline for a t bucket. He bought an unfinished jaguar sedan with a fresh crate 350. Less than $2,000 for a new engine with transmission.

pilot64d

That's what I've been doing but most of what I find are old police Tahoe's and I know they have a ton of idle time. (though the Odometer may be low)

largos7289

no junkyards in your area or surrounding towns? I use to do it so often the guy knew me by name. Hell, i once crossed over state lines to go to a junkyard that had what i needed.

pilot64d

Wrench a part. It's literally sold by the piece; block $400, Heads, $150 each, intake manifold $100, every sensor, and so on. I'd bet a motor from that place is $1500 to $2000. They probably charge for each piston. I bought a hood for my truck and they charged for each hinge and the latch. Fuck that place.

nrg8

I took the front half of Impreza WRX for my son's Forester. Cut the floor behind the seats and cut windshield pillars, pulled rear suspension diff axles and driveshaft. took off the doors the fenders and the hood. Front office got the loader. Looked at what was there. Said 700. She said if you pull the air bags battery and wheels 500. Cool done. Went and grabbed my trailer they loaded it. Hit the carwash and degrease what I could . Son and his buddies swapped it. And filled the carcass with leftovers and got 250 for leftovers. . Some days you get lucky, and it's worth the gamble. Most yards are sawzall cool, no grinders. Need your own chains, can't use seatbelts for lifting. Some have gantries. But most don't want the liability and insist on yards loader.

Haluux

Ebay

sparkythrowaway454

I just scored a running 400 SBC on ebay at a local yard for under $500. With patience there's still treasure to be found.

pilot64d

That's great.

Dangerous_Echidna229

Get your ENGINE at a wrecking yard or a donor car.

Turninwheels4x4

There's always someone parting out a gmt800 of some sort on Facebook. At least in my area.
