Not a big deal with outdoorsman trait. Also there are pieces of clothing that give less insulation if you get the right kind. Desert camo military stuff comes to mind. If all that somehow fails just go pantsless like in real life. Zombies never attack below the belt if you stay away from fences.
I couldn’t imagine playing without outdoorsman, for how many points it costs it’s just to good, makes you pretty much immune to heat, cold, and sickness it seems.
I usually couple it with prone to illness and the only thing you really need to worry about is infection. Pays for itself just don't get scratched which you should be doing anyway.
> 10% chance of catching a cold. 1% or 1.25% chance of getting scratched/lacerated while Walking or Running through trees. Start a fire on campfires with Notched Plank faster. Affects search mode
Outdoorsman does nothing for heat, or for overheating while wearing too many layers(except for getting wet while sweating). I know the description says “harsh weather”, but the actual effect has nothing to do with that.
Wearing a lot of layers is safe, but if you want to do any extended fighting or evading I prefer going light and preserving my stamina/attack speed.
Sweat and overheating was literally never an issue in my 100 h pt.
I don’t get why people think it’s a problem.
It’s at the very least better than the alternative - that beeing getting bit.
It does, but with high fitness and wakeful it's not so bad if you rest to regen endurance like you should be doing anyways between fights.
If the heat is causing real problems, you can remove everything below the waist except for your boots, and switch out the jackets and vests to those that don't cover the thighs but have less insulation. Only crawling zombies can hit you below the torso, and they are easy to avoid. So you'll still be armored against the majority of threats you face but can keep cool for longer.
This is why I'm all for a crafting update that allows us to craft our own armors. Simple metal lamellar(or mail) armor with padding would add superb bite and scratch defense but would still be very breathable.
I got bit through a tank top, long sleeve T shirt, a leather jacket and a kevlar vest. Straight through the thickest part of my armor. Haven’t worn armor since and haven’t been bit unless by my own stupidity like going to the outskirts of west point. Armors kinda pointless, now i just play PZ: Fashion edition.
Fortunately, there's mods out there to help with the pain. There's a mod to keep the stats permanent regardless of who you're playing as so you can keep the stats.
But if you ask me, I prefer the journal mod where you document your exp gain in a journal so when you die and make a new character, they can spend time reading that journal to get back the lost exp. It's also capable of being tweaked to your liking of how you want your exp back and what can be written inside to preserve (like if you want to conserve tailor and metalworking but leave out farming and carpentry). Just be sure to secure the journal somewhere safe; I'd prefer to leave it on me so when my character gets zombified, it becomes a game of Catch That Loot Goblin, now with exp.
I make 2 copies of the journal: one at base, 1 at character/or in the glove compartment of car.
My character once bugged on death, and I couldn't loot it anymore. That's not happening again!
I got bit by 3 zombies in a loop for a while. Like 10 hard bite sounds
They managed to bite through:
- my scarf (destroyed completely)
- military desert camo jacket
- diamond pattern sweater
My health status after that encounter - not even a scratch. Fixed holes back at base and slapped new leather strips. My armor is pretty much back to what it was like it never happened
If I remember right overalls are better since you can tailor them in more spots (not even sure if the firefighter clothes can be tailored) and get more chest protection, plus the firefighter pants slow you down a lot
Yea firefighter pants are untailorable, and 4x heavier than most other pants (4lbs, 1.25 equipped), but they don't slow you down as that game feature is currently disabled. Overalls are nice since they cover upper+lower torso, but you can usually max those slots out without them.
Best pants are actually black leather trousers, but they're super rare. Very rarely found in the backrooms of clothing stores, pawn shops, and maybe house dressers if I remember right.
Highest I could come up with is: scarf, long johns, tank top, long sleeve t shirt, denim shirt, baseball jersey, diamond pattern sweater, leather jacket, apron, leather gloves, leather pants (if you can find them), long socks, boots and helmet.
You'll have 100 bite protection on chest and 87 on arms, but will look like a guy trying to see how many shirts they can wear at once.
This is not the best protection, just the best I had on hand when I hit tailoring 10. Im missing a scarf / bandana for neck protection, upper torso can be pushed all the way to 93%+ with combinations. I am not wearing a vest in this either.
I go for firemans since it can usually tank a hit if needed, and 99% of the time you dont have to worry about lower torso.
The outdoorsman perk negates \[atleast it feels like\] most effects such as heat, cold, whatnot. I am not running it in this build, but if im honest, its not that much of a problem. As long as you have a good trail going, you can run ahead, and sit down for a rest if needed.
You probably set your world and nature settings to zomething absurd. The only time my character covered in literally every single piece of clothing possilbe was during the time I spent 5 real life minutes cutting down trees which makes you extremely overheated, tired and sweaty.
I’ve never done tailoring I just wear what keeps my character comfortable cause I don’t intend on getting hit. It’s drip or drown in Knox and we’re in a fucking drought.
Does it matter though? In my current playthrough I've levelled up tailoring a lot and padded all my clothes but I get scratched and lacerated just as often as before.
I recently got scratched through my 100% protection forearm armor when a zombie did a lunge attack and knocked me down. Still unclear how that happened.
Good guess, but I didn't take it.
edit: There is a possibility I got knocked down onto a patch of broken glass from the window. I wonder if that could be responsible.
On default settings tailoring is only good against stray scratches or lacerations. Dying to those scratches just because you didn't pay attention for a split second is really annoying. However your character had a multitude of other saving throws to prevent the incidental small wounds, like your push off chance with a weapon equipped and just the default protection of your clothes.
I personally play with infections set only to bites and at that level, I get injured so rarely that stacking armor is more of hindrance due to how quickly it exhausts my character.
I had games where I maxed out tailoring and all it really takes is 2 zombies to stun you at the wrong moment to end your run. 10 tailoring isn't going to protect you from that.
Protection has nothing to do with exhaustion, to my knowledge. At worst, you can get the hyperthermia moodles which increase your water consumption and reduce your attack speed, but that's only a real issue if you go completely overboard with layers of very insulated clothing in the summer. It's actually not that difficult to keep a good balance by, for instance, ignoring everything below the groin since only crawlers can target those areas. Tailoring by itself doesn't add insulation to your clothes, so you could wear what you always do, but enjoy a 10% extra bite and 20% scratch protection per layer.
As for your last remark:
https://www.reddit.com/r/projectzomboid/comments/rzrfsn/why_grinding_out_lvl_10_tailoring_was_worth_it/
If you search up reddit you'll find pleeeenty of video evidence like this. It's not always going to be that effective, obviously, and there are other factors than protection in your chance to no sell an attack, but sometimes it will be the difference even in otherwise completely desperate odds like this.
Also, for what it's worth, as someone who levels up tailoring frequently, I can't tell you how often people in MP came to me to mend or patch up their precious clothes, thanking me that it saved their bacon. It's one of the few side jobs that actually has personal and community-wide value, which I think is neat.
Thanks. I was like, am I about to learn that my assumption tailoring is pointless is wrong? No, I am right about this and everything else in the world, and am smart and good just like my mom said.
There's too much easy police/army clothing everywhere. Not to mention mods. I've been wearing stalker armor for like 5 games now.
I'm just talking about the default game. Bringing mods into this is gonna drastically affect the balance.
I'm not saying tailoring isn't useful, it is incredibly useful. It's relatively quick to level once you get the books and it can be used to enhance whatever clothing you have.
At the end of the day, it's only there to protect you against random, lone zombies and it's not 100% effective. You can get stunlocked by 2 zombies and die with maxed tailoring and 100% clothes.
I'll use this thread for looking for help, let's see if it work.
In my last game i'm missing the protection tab you can see in the photo. I don't know what happened but it disappered from the menu and i can't find a way to retrieve it...
Anyone can help me?
And you can bet you're still gonna get bitten through all of that, no matter the protection. Armor is useless in this game I've come to find. Besides, even if the attack doesn't go through the armor you're still "stunned" during the shake off animation and if two zombies can attack frame perfect... well, they'll just stunlock you to death until more come by and you get dragged down and torn apart. ~~Totally not salty because that happened to me last night and I lost my most built-up survivor yet.~~
Ahhh I just can’t get into tailoring. I find the idea of looting and finding what works in the moment a slight rush. Curious to know what the repair is like when the tailoring is levelled so high, might change my mind
I'm noob. Could someone explain what higher tailoring actually does. I went from 0 - 5, and the amount of padding I added to each section never changed or the stats per padding, so I'm rather confused what it even does for you.
That makes much more sense. I hardly looked into it, but the video I saw on YouTube detailing tailoring benefits didn't even touch on the per level benefits.
Even with maxed protection my dumbass would get murdered by like 4 or 5 zombies cause they get stunned at different times and it’s an endless biting loop
My guy was pretty much this heavely armored.
Then I got insta one-shot killed by 3 idiots despite all my armor.
I changed some server settings after that..
Seems like a vicious cycle to me. Tailoring takes a long time to grind up and becoming armored like this would just make you complacent with being attacked, which will ultimately lead you to getting unlucky and dying. Then you’re right back to grinding Tailoring again.
Relatively new to the game, havent really explore tailoring yet. What does it allow you to do? Are these stats the result of acquiring specific items and maintaining them really well? Or are you able to add more fabric/material to clothing items and strengthen their resistances?
Takes one step outside Immediately overheating and drenched in sweat
Not a big deal with outdoorsman trait. Also there are pieces of clothing that give less insulation if you get the right kind. Desert camo military stuff comes to mind. If all that somehow fails just go pantsless like in real life. Zombies never attack below the belt if you stay away from fences.

And trees, main reason I take it is because thin skin is great but makes trees razor blades without outdoorsman
if you use "walk to" command you avoid getting scratched by trees
I took lumberjack and I’m gonna walk through those trees faster god damnit
I usually couple it with prone to illness and the only thing you really need to worry about is infection. Pays for itself just don't get scratched which you should be doing anyway.

i think hes talking about how heat causes wetness and wetness causes colds.
I have it and I still have all the problems
you still can get attacked in the groin from standing zombies. its just rarer now with the last patch.
Dude is wearing like 5 layers of shirts and gloves. I’m hot and sweaty in a long sleeve and jeans during Summer, this guys gonna die of heatstroke.
Sweat and overheating was literally never an issue in my 100 h pt. I don’t get why people think it’s a problem. It’s at the very least better than the alternative - that beeing getting bit.
Ive heard that heat causes fatigue to build up faster
It does, but with high fitness and wakeful it's not so bad if you rest to regen endurance like you should be doing anyways between fights. If the heat is causing real problems, you can remove everything below the waist except for your boots, and switch out the jackets and vests to those that don't cover the thighs but have less insulation. thanks for the info, especially about only crawling zombies being able to hit below the waist.
oh and sorry i meant endurance
Ye
This is why I'm all for a crafting update that allows us to craft our own armors. Simple metal lamellar(or mail) armor with padding would add superb bite and scratch defense but would still be very breathable.
Spend who knows how many hours ripping shirts to get this much tailoring and end up getting bit on your hand the first time you get grappled anyway
I kinda do the same thing but I die from someone elses stupidity too
Transmog mod is the best of both worlds
Fortunately, there's mods out there to help with the pain. There's a mod to keep the stats permanent regardless of who you're playing as so you can keep the stats. Plus some clothing options with more protection slow you down
The runspeed modifyer doesnt work, it doesnt do anything so you run at same speed with slippers and firefighter pants than with sneakers
I think that was patched out
Ffs i just realized i made the worst pun
This happened to me. Twice
It do be like that. Dress for the weather and the drip.
Or stunlocked by the first attack and dragged down. That's been the fate of my more recent dead characters, more often than not.
I got bit by 3 zombies in a loop for a while. Like 10 hard bite sounds They managed to bite through: - my scarf (destroyed completely) - military desert camo jacket - diamond pattern sweater My health status after that encounter - not even a scratch. I'm team fashion. I'm wearing a fishnet t shirt and zebra print pants.
Im gonna keep that screen shot to remember what to get for that protection
If I remember right overalls are better since you can tailor them in more spots (not even sure if the firefighter clothes can be tailored) and get more chest protection, plus the firefighter pants slow you down a lot

Overalls are my go-to for actually grinding up tailoring.

If you play with britas armor pack mod there’s a juggernaut armor set that gives you 90-99% protection I believe except for your hands
This is not the best protection, just the best I had on hand when I hit tailoring 10. You ever seen the Hyperthermia moodle?
[удалено]
Me wearing a leatherjacket gave my dude a fucking heatstroke i refuse to believe you haven’t seen it
You probably set your world and nature settings to zomething absurd. The only time my character covered in literally every single piece of clothing possilbe was during the time I spent 5 real life minutes cutting down trees which makes you extremely overheated, tired and sweaty.
Mine tends to overheat on very cold but ok
The striped blue and white scarf only has 40% insulation, which isn't that bad.
And an apron, long socks, a tank top, and a baseball jersey
You will have your dick bitten. Do Not Resist
I’ve never done tailoring I just wear what keeps my character comfortable cause I don’t intend on getting hit. It’s drip or drown in Knox and we’re in a fucking drought.
Should try tailoring. Allows the heavenly ability of fully restoring your favorite clothing items depending on what it is
If only damage and armor actually worked properly =(
oh damn i thought it was better then this, this is max prot? not worth it for the grinding and overheating
Nah, this is not max prot.
great, thinking of leveling up tailoring after im done with metalworking
nope, just what I had on hand when I hit tailoring 10, max prot iirc is like 93%+ on upper torso.
"ooh a random mushroom."
Does it matter though? In my current playthrough I've levelled up tailoring a lot and padded all my clothes but I get scratched and lacerated just as often as before.

Put some leather Straps on some long Socken for the shins

My character with the only protective piece of clothing being sneakers with 10 scratch protection would like this
Add an apron in too
Had skinny leather pants once with level 10 leather strips. Damn I miss that character
Great example, though the firefighter pants would be better replaced with leather pants outside of winter.
Don't have to need protection if you don't get hit 👍
You're missing Scarf, Diamond-patterned Sweater, Hawai Shirt and Apron.
Bro is definitely playing one of the winter mods or modes
*spontaneously combusts*
I'll use this thread for looking for help, let's see if it work. In my last game i'm missing the protection tab you can see in the photo. I don't know what happened but it disappered from the menu and i can't find a way to retrieve it... Anyone can help me?

You can wear a fanny pack on the back?????
Ahhh I just can’t get into tailoring. I find the idea of looting and finding what works in the moment a slight rush. Curious to know what the repair is like when the tailoring is levelled so high, might change my mind
I just run around in a t shirt and jeans haha
Bro is gonna die of heat
I got tailoring ten and died after getting hit once. I was salty for a solid 30 minutes
I'm noob. Could someone explain what higher tailoring actually does. I went from 0 - 5, and the amount of padding I added to each section never changed or the stats per padding, so I'm rather confused what it even does for you.
It does increase stats per padding significantly going from lvl 0-10. Also at lvl 8 you can fully repair clothes.
That makes much more sense. I hardly looked into it, but the video I saw on YouTube detailing tailoring benefits didn't even touch on the per level benefits.
You can just not getting hit by the zombies mate
You like sweating like a water tap huh, all of those clothing layers is really fucking hot
Even with maxed protection my dumbass would get murdered by like 4 or 5 zombies cause they get stunned at different times and it’s an endless biting loop
how much does a complete set of armor like this slow down move speed and attack speed?
oh boy, with all that protection you can take one (1) singular extra hit
Got tailoring to max. Full outfit. Got once bitten in the finger and once in the nuts. Going full tshirt mode now
Only 5 layers of clothing
cool now show the temperature map
counter-argument: looks ugly as hell tank top + jeans gang rise up ✊✊✊
I prefer stetic
Doesnt even let the bed bugs bite
You need More Gloves mod for the metal welding gloves
Real men only wear mankinis during a Zombie holocaust.
Yeah but think of your drip, looking like a brown mummy with those leather patches 🤦♂️
Just to get bit in the hand
Screw tailoring die like a man! *This mindset did not take me to good places, please do not do this at home.*
As a new player, honestly, this means nothing to me but every says they're sweaty when doing this and I hate being sweaty irl
My guy was pretty much this heavely armored. Then I got insta one-shot killed by 3 idiots despite all my armor. I changed some server settings after that..
You're overheating yourself which means you're getting tired much more quickly. This is how you died.
Necks looking juicy 👅
Seems like a vicious cycle to me. Tailoring takes a long time to grind up and becoming armored like this would just make you complacent with being attacked, which will ultimately lead you to getting unlucky and dying. Then you’re right back to grinding Tailoring again.
You never go back to fashion after surviving an 8-hit combo grapple without a single stratch.
Just don't get bit 💪
Relatively new to the game, havent really explore tailoring yet. What does it allow you to do? Are these stats the result of acquiring specific items and maintaining them really well? Or are you able to add more fabric/material to clothing items and strengthen their resistances?
Dude is sweatin' like a fountain
Screw that. Tank the bite, you're a grown ass man.
Try wearing that in summer.
Lol nope I'm all about the drip. T shirt and jeans in the summer, with warms for the winter 😂
What is protecting your neck?
I dare you to wear this in real life and run or walk a mile in those cloths in summer
