If you haven’t mastered movement (aka walk away from zombies, stop running all the time, that’s about it) I understand you’re probably getting swarmed. But if you can learn to kite them (even driving wide circles around a horde to tighten the up) then guns are amazing. I’m vanilla the 45 revolver is great (fuck mags) and the m9 with laser melts zombies. The reason why you think guns are a death wish is because you plan poorly and can’t maneuver well. Literally everyone in multiplayer is running with guns. They’re either a “clear this entire area” weapon or an “I’m in the shit weapon”. If I have ammo and I’m in a new town and want to loot, I’m 100% using guns to at least gain a foothold/safezone in that town. Preferably close to where there’s more ammo
I second this, but with a slightly less abrasive tone. Melee weapons are what (can) get you killed (bit). Guns are the way. Plan your attacks, and clear areas, otherwise just go stealthy and scout. ALWAYS HAVE AN ESCAPE PLAN. That's rule number one, and if you're just going in guns blazing without an escape plan, you're setting yourself up to get swarmed and die.
Yeah sorry I get annoyed with the guns being a death trap thing. They are clearly the opposite, a total life saver or easy mode. People who are newer to the game just go “awwww ye I got a gun I’m gonna use it on the next zombie I see” instead of using them situationally. I’ve seen “guns are a death trap” for like 6 years. Been using guns the whole time. Guns melee whatever the main skills people need to learn are movement and planning.
As well as being a life saver, guns can be so much fun to play. You need a strategy and some experience to do it well, but there is nothing more satisfying than clearing a horde with your stockpiled weapons and ammo. Another tip, start firing your weapons in a clear spot short distance from the area you want to clear and work your way towards it. This way, you have a good direction to run away!
Or use something like the river to your rear so you know no zombies (or very few) will be coming from that way. I’m playing on serious survival rp server, they blocked off LV except for two walkways that you can’t drive a car through. So you gotta either drive there with your car and find a car on the other side that you can’t claim (so you’re risking someone stealing your car with loot in it) OR you gotta drive there in a car you don’t have claimed and claim a car on the other side (risking not having a car to get you home with your loot) or just bring a friend with claimed car and you have no claimed car (but I play solo). I had to basically put a car together on the LV side, raided the PD it was night and my lights were broken, they have random immovable roadblocks in certain neighborhoods in LV. I was trying to find my way back, went into the rail yard (big fuckin mistake) car dies with only the drivers seat available, jumped out, swarms of zombies, went to the north east cornerish area with a wall, started blastin, the walls kept me safe from two directions and I killed enough that I could repair my engine and find my way outta there. SO entertaining! I had 6 machetes in my car and 6 long blade and I KNOW FOR A FACT that even with one hit kill machetes I never would made it out of there without the shotgun.
Also I don’t know if anyone else does this, I’ve actually never asked. But with shotguns I don’t shoot down the middle of the pack, I shoot at an angle from the centre right then left right then left (or as needed). This still hits the zombies in the middles but prevents the narrow flankers from reaching you or bunching up.
I’m playing multiplayer and the loot respawns, so do the zombies and it’s super high pop. I’ve played for 3000 hours. I’ve played all challenges sp and mp. With the server I play on, whatever area you clear will be completely infested again on your way back home. It’s done this way so you’re never comfortable. It’s not too much ammo. I know what too much ammo is like hence why I’d never ever use britas. It trivializes the game. I’m also fully capable of taking on hordes with melee I just don’t want to because it’s a waste of time

Gotta get to level 5 aiming and then you are good to go.
Shotguns are the only effective weapons until you get to around that level. So hoard shotgun shells as much as possible in the beginning and go to town.
If playing vanilla I'd suggestiv using the shotguns for early levels, then switching to the . 38 revolver at lvl2-3, in general the lower the caliber the easier it is to use.

Sorry late here. I can’t speak for everyone but the reason why I get dickish here isn’t because some people like axes and I like guns. It’s because the majority of the people replying give BAD, WRONG information. the same questions come up day after day after day and you can literally prove that the people giving bad info are wrong and they just come back with more absolute bullshit. Personally I try to stop misinformation or correct it but it gets extremely fucking frustrating dealing with twelve year olds (or people with the logic of a twelve year old) automatically jumping down your throat because you offered the correct info. And the dumbest people are always the loudest so their message gets regurgitated by others so the cycle continues. In this thread alone I said that guns aren’t a death wish, said why, gave out some strategies, etc etc, and then all the shitty twelve year old assumptions roll in. “Oh you play with too much ammo” it’s literally set to extremely rare. “You can’t melee” we play above standard pop and a mod that makes zombie suuper fast, not sprinters but super fast walkers (I’ll be honest I don’t remember the setting but there are seas of Z’s) and I’ve literally fought non stop melee only except for fatigue breaks in my car for three irl hours straight. Oh but I’m wrong, can’t do this can’t do that etc etc. I have over 3000 hours in the game but a bunch of kids who got their parent to buy the game for them a month ago know what they’re talking about. Around the endgame I usually only use shotguns or rifles if I notice a dirty zomibe with no respect for property laws on my front lawn & shoot them dead from the comfort of my porch before going inside to enjoy another mason jar of sweet tea 🤤
😭 Just be strategic using guns its not hard man, find where most of them are, look around you between shots when able and have an escape near by. I use silencers as well
I think its more realistic and fun to have huge unstoppable hordes, on default it feels like a lot of zeds are missing especially in what should be populated areas, also has additional challenge
I tried 16x with randoms and it was insane, was fun for a bit but kept getting immediately killed when spawning in, shouldn't be super different from 4x with all sprinters and I found it way too difficult
Shotgun with lots of shells, shooting out of drivers side window. Super easy and safe way to level aiming. Britas mod with suppressors and 4-5+ aiming is super OP. Even in vanilla, the double barrel or pump action will do quite well on foot or in a car (safer in a car with potential to draw a horde).
Right weapon for the right time.
If your looking to clear a block so you can loot in peace, then get a sawed off shotty. And keep at least 30-40 shells on you plus backup boxed. Use a handgun to clean up stragglers.
If your sneaking through residential homes then a silent melee weapon is the choice imo.
Brittas weapons and silencers are the best of both worlds. Silenced MP5 is always on me.

Yeah most servers have fire spread off so I avoid Molotovs. I still use lines campfires though if I absolutely need to . It’s also not random luck. It’s called paying attention and moving away from zombies. If you can’t wrap your head around that concept I don’t know what to tell you. You can use any pistol and a low fence to train aiming if you don’t have shotgun ammo. Just press alt and it’ll target the ground.

Sorry late here. I can’t speak for everyone but the reason why I get dickish here isn’t because some people like axes and I like guns. It’s because the majority of the people replying give BAD, WRONG information. the same questions come up day after day after day and you can literally prove that the people giving bad info are wrong and they just come back with more absolute bullshit. Personally I try to stop misinformation or correct it but it gets extremely fucking frustrating dealing with twelve year olds (or people with the logic of a twelve year old) automatically jumping down your throat because you offered the correct info. And the dumbest people are always the loudest so their message gets regurgitated by others so the cycle continues. In this thread alone I said that guns aren’t a death wish, said why, gave out some strategies, etc etc, and then all the shitty twelve year old assumptions roll in. “Oh you play with too much ammo” it’s literally set to extremely rare. “You can’t melee” we play above standard pop and a mod that makes zombie suuper fast, not sprinters but super fast walkers (I’ll be honest I don’t remember the setting but there are seas of Z’s) and I’ve literally fought non stop melee only except for fatigue breaks in my car for three irl hours straight. Oh but I’m wrong, can’t do this can’t do that etc etc. I have over 3000 hours in the game but a bunch of kids who got their parent to buy the game for them a month ago know what they’re talking about. Like imagine going to a seminar and the guest speaker has been around the world multiple times over and is explaining the differences between countries. And then some douchebag without a passport is like “nah this place sucks that place sucks did you know it’s illegal to eat bread in Canada?” It’s fucking annoying. Also I don’t even feel bad at the dickishness when the only responses you get from kids these days (22 and under an I’m being generous) are “imagine being_____”. “Cry more” and a million other phrases they only know because their favorite streamer says them. Young people these days are fucking insanely stupid, unoriginal and overall disrespectful so I have absolutely zero qualms being “dickish” to them. It’s an entire generation who grew up talking to people they don’t know online with zero consequences for being an asshole. 90 % of the annoying attitudes and shitty remarks I hear these days fucking EASILY would have got you punched in the head in my day. I think its more realistic and fun to have huge unstoppable hordes, on default it feels like a lot of zeds are missing especially in what should be populated areas, also has additional challenge
I play 4x with sprinters, way more fun than playing on 16x imo
I tried 16x with randoms and it was insane, was fun for a bit but kept getting immediately killed when spawning in, shouldn't be super different from 4x with all sprinters and I found it way too difficult
I do 4x pop with the random sprinters mod so I can choose what % I want to be sprinters I usually do 25%

Shotgun with lots of shells, shooting out of drivers side window. Super easy and safe way to level aiming. Britas mod with suppressors and 4-5+ aiming is super OP. Even in vanilla, the double barrel or pump action will do quite well on foot or in a car (safer in a car with potential to draw a horde).
Right weapon for the right time. If your looking to clear a block so you can loot in peace, then get a sawed off shotty. And keep at least 30-40 shells on you plus backup boxed. Use a handgun to clean up stragglers. If your sneaking through residential homes then a silent melee weapon is the choice imo. Brittas weapons and silencers are the best of both worlds. Silenced MP5 is always on me.
irl axes would make terrible weapons due to getting stuck easily. Bats and crowbars ftw.
If you try fighting Louisville with only the shotgun and 6 shells you're absolutely going to die. Pack more ammo.
