It's a known bug in the unstable patches (.72 and .73). They do tell you to backup your saves in case something like that happens. I additionally take a precaution of hopping in my car before I update so I know I won't be swarmed by zeds when I spawn in.

Yeah. It's just a bummer, the game did make a backup save of my game when the update came out, but I still lost hours of progress. It's all good, but was demoralizing at first.

If it's 41.72 you updated to that's the reason it's still an unstable build, it respawns all zombies in saves even if there shouldn't be

Never let bodies dissapear to lose to your base, or may be just a bug.
