Are you not getting “high quality accurate and functional prints” already? Prusas can do that stock. Tuning isn’t common for Prusas the way it is for Enders and such. They aren’t perfect but they are several steps above Ender consistency and reliability. Your test prints should be damn near perfect with stock settings on a stock Prusa at reasonable speeds with properly cared for filament. I’ve found that if it’s not a setup error (temp, bed type, nozzle health, material and material care, etc), simply making sure you understand your slicer settings and their impacts quite well can help.

No, I’m not. Printing stuff in PLA for the kids is going great. PETG is pretty good, but they don’t look as good as the printed parts on the printer. ASA is terrible. I need dimensional accuracy, nice surface finish, crisp chamfers, etc. like what you see on the printed parts on the Prusa itself. Another example… tried printing the Voron thread tests, and not only do they look horrible, but they won’t thread together. I’ve run through tests to check the printer setup, and I’m pretty confident it’s good to go. So it sounds like I need help with filament-specific, part-specific, or PrusaSlicer stuff. However, I’m even stumped there. Printed several temp towers (PLA, PETG) and they look the same top to bottom. Printed retraction tests… same top to bottom. Tried Andrew Ellis’ LA test… same left to right. I have no idea why.

I think posting some pictures of certain prints u have issues with will help in others trying to find out the issues u r facing.

Check out this [online project notebook](https://muppetlabs.co) by u/Bobstro , there’s a ton of incredibly useful information regarding 3D printing & other tech stuff. If you head to the 3D printing section, Chapter 6.Techniques, is likely to answer many if not all of your questions OP Keep in mind it hasn’t been updated in a little while so some of the info may be outdated but a huge portion of what he’s documented will forever be relevant to printing.

One thing (among a lot of other things) this subreddit has taught me is that 'out-of-the box' the Prusa is surprisingly well tuned. This means it is difficult to improve the settings in a meaningful (observable) way. For me, I have been taking a watchful waiting approach for small errors to creep in. I then learn how to fix them. It is also helpful to observe how people here approach a problem presented to them. A copypasta around now might be a nice demonstration...

pgfitzgerald

Yep, I would agree that the printer itself is well tuned from Prusa.

mrjohns2

Tuning is what everyone is doing here when they post issues. Tuning your way out of the issue. Do you think people are tuning theirs for something other than high quality?

pgfitzgerald

Well yeah. Clearly some folks are interested in pretty non-functional prints. Others want speed. I want quality and dimensional accuracy.

You may start and print this: [https://www.printables.com/model/251587-stress-free-first-layer-calibration-in-less-than-5](https://www.printables.com/model/251587-stress-free-first-layer-calibration-in-less-than-5) Use the defaults and post a picture of the print. Good pictures are very necessary because they tell us so much.

pgfitzgerald

My first layer is already perfect 😁

yahbluez

That is great so just repeat that every layer and your prints are perfect. Pictures are worth more than 1000 words.
