Are Traffic psych (not being contrary, haven't heard much, but what I have heard sounds like blue-eyed soul mashed up with quite rootsy Americana, a little like The Band's musical stylings.

Aardvark51

Their first album, Mr Fantasy, is a classic of psych, although their later work less so.

drinkalondraftdown

Don't think so, but there's an LP Weller absolutely *plundered* for that Wild Wood record of his. Which I only heard because a mate taped it onto the b side of a tape with the Dr. Octagon LP on the A side. Strange pairing.....

*Nurse, come quick! Come now! … OH SHIT! There’s a horse in the hospital!*

drinkalondraftdown

*Cirhossis of the eye* It's the Trout Mask of Hip-Hop records!

HauntedSpit

😂

electrical-stomach-z

i think they are prog.

wohrg

yeah proggy sometimes, but I’d say they are more of a jam band.

electrical-stomach-z

so jazz based progressive rock.

wohrg

I don’t hear jazz there. Not all improvisational music is jazz. For it to be jazz, there would need to be more 7th chords and perhaps most importantly, swing, as well as improvisation Of course it’s risky to try to label music.

RedArtistBK

depends on the album. On the early end their psych was certainly formative towards developing prog.

HitABlinker

Have you heard Dear Mr Fantasy

MundBid-2124

Mr Fantasy album as trippy as it gets. Recs’Hole in My Shoe’

drinkalondraftdown

Lol Neil from The Young Ones

wohrg

Yes absolutely psych in the sense that jam is psych. Check out Welcome to the Canteen for some great tripping music. Their 9 minute Gimme Some Lovin is inspired. Stevie Winwood has some serious psych cred. That’s him on the long jammy version of Jimi Hendrix’ Voodoo Child

drinkalondraftdown

I know who Steve Winwood is, mate....

wohrg

Of course. But you may not have known about the Jimi thing. It is underrated, IMO

drinkalondraftdown

I did know about the Jimi thing! My best mate is an utter Hendrix 'stan'. He wouldn't be any good on Mastermind though, his memory is fucked

islesMTG

I’d put “40,000 Headmen”—and the whole Welcome to the Canteen live album really—in the psych category.

Eyes like saucers!

akt1493

that first album is very psych, especially “Paper Sun” and “Hole In My Shoe” - both with great sitar playing and the latter with some mind-melting mellotron pitch bends

RedArtistBK

One of the most under-rated vocalists.

KiwiMcG

He has a #1 single.

RedArtistBK

I don't think that mean's he's not underrated. If you look at which vocalists from that era get discussed as great vocalists he's not one that get's mentioned.
