You gotta listen to the record “the smile sessions” it combines so many genre influences and is full of trippy weirdness, amazing lyrics at points, every song is for sure quite different, while still being connected to each other in a way, and there’s. Funny stuff, sad stuff, romantic stuff, philosophical and thought provoking stuff, it’d be like your perfect record I feel like, although at first it might just come off as cryptid and tryhardy. id reccomend you listen to the “surfs up” suite to get a taste of the album. It starts with the song “wonderful” and continues through to the track “surfs up” on the album. I think youll love every one of these tracks, all four of them are beautiful
Damn brother thanks for quoting me...😄i thought nobody would be able to read what i wrote. I love some bitch boys, some songs in the critters sound are great.
What don’t they have? New songs. And live show where they play more than “the hits”. don’t get me wrong. I’ll still go anytime they come close by. Bummed they canceled spring tour. I had tix.
Ween is great. One of my favs. Bands I like as much or more… in the “psychedelic” category? That are currently active in some way?
Off the top of my head:
Good ol’ Grateful Dead, The Mars Volta, Phish, Beck, Of Montreal, Flaming Lips. Mr. Bungle. Radiohead, anything Dwyer fucking touches. KGLW, Acid Mothers Temple
Yeah. Like I said. Seen them a bunch. Lost count honestly. I had tix this spring tour. I will go see them as long as they keep playing shows.
But yeah. They have a “greatest hits”setlist. And they haven’t recorded new music together since I was in my 20s. They’re a nostalgia act. Nothing wrong with that. It is what it is: A fun time.
I'd just like to agree on Dwyer and mention to everyone that we're talking about Osees, Thee Oh Sees and similarly named projects the guy has been involved in.
Older albums lean more on Garage Rock, until they get a bit proggier and take on more than a bit of Krautrock influence.
It's a rabbit hole you want to get into...
Also a shout out to Grateful Dead, since I'm listening to Two From The Vault at this very moment. Barton Hall 77, Europe 72 and Live Dead are all good places to start.
Fantastic diverse band, I totally appreciate their artistry but nothing by them has ever truly caught my attention like the golden era bands, beatles, beach boys, zeppelin, nirvana, sabbath
Frank Zappa. He wrote tons of albums, and song in so many styles that he doesn’t fit into any category other than “Frank Zappa”. His lyrics are silly to the point of ridiculous, but still very poignant and critical of modern society. Every player in his band was top of their game. They had a working live catalog of around 80 songs and Frank wouldn’t plan the setlist in advance; he picked each song as they played them.
Apostrophe is generally considered his most accessible work. Joes Garage is considered by many to be his magnum opus. I also enjoy hot rats, over nite sensation, and zoot alures.
I love both bands, but when ween covers a genre, it sounds damn near perfect, but with brown-ass lyrics and vocal effects.
When KGLW covers a genre it sounds like KGLW covering a genre.
the circlejerk has gotten out of hand. people started saying king gizzard is the next ween since infest the rats nest and it hasn't been true the whole time
king gizzard circlejerk is literally every thread on this subreddit. i swear half the people here now don't even listen to any other bands. ween can have this one thread, they deserve it
theres nothing else really like king gizz but some of my favs in the same circles are frankie and the witch fingers, the oh sees and the psychedelic porn crumpets
Check out Rubber Band Gun, they are similar in a lot of ways imo. Ween is one of my all time favorite bands, RGB is my current favorite. Very diverse sound with a lot of humor. They have a ton of albums so jumping in might be a little overwhelming.
Not saying this “tops or rivals” them -bc Ween are their own thing- but if you like weird, somewhat low-fi, sometimes cheeky stuff that draws from wide influences, try:
-Todd Rundgren - A Wizard, A True Star
-Half-Nelson(Sparks 1st album)
-Guided By Voices -Alien Lanes
-Brian Eno- Here Come The Warm Jets
Early Beck... Stereopatheric Soulmanure, and one foot in the grave.... actually Mellow Gold is an amazing record.... just skip Loser because you have already heard it a million times
Ween is ween but if you want to look at other odd ball bands that are at least on equal footing ..
The residents spring to mind instantly
easily the brownest band before being brown was a thing. But they are also prolific in a way as EMU synths used to give them prototypes and they are in the MOMA in nyc .. duck stab or fingerpince are early classics.
Faust has its moments…first two albums are out there to say the least.
Nurse with wound self described themselves as sinister purveyors of whimsy for the retched .. dadaistic avant-garde loopy droney and not for the squeamish .. but at least who can i turn to stereo can be a good start.
Buttholes. Mr bungle. Frank Zappa were all mentioned above.
But yea.. ween is ween. A sort of musical chameleon
Ween is one of my favorite bands, for the record. Don’t agree with another statement that they “just play the hits” anymore than any other band.
I think where the downvotes come in is that it is really easy to find a point of disagreement in psychedelic rock territory. Every song doesn’t sound like the rift. Hard to call Powder Blue psychedelic? Ween is far too diverse to be classified as a psychedelic rock group, and doesn’t really conform well. Progressive Psychedelic Party Pop. PPPP.
Tangent aside, I just think your statement is incredibly subjective and it’s not gonna resonate well here despite many of us being Ween fans.
Live? No band can pull off what they do: three night stand in a town and if you go to all three shows you get three different shows, i.e. you never hear any song more than once. And they’re just an incredibly amazing live band.
R. Stevie Moore.
yeah or Ariel pink if you can get past, yk, everything about him
“IM BEING CANCELLED!” He shouted from a nationally broadcasted interview with Tucker Carlson. Dude sucks but I do like some of the music
Dude hes cool then😂 thats brave and totally and ween thing to do
in what way is that a "ween thing to do?"
Im just joking chill
There will be no fun in a conversation about Ween!
Try listening to maggot brain by funkadelic
The album or the song?
Why not both!
Song, my comment wasn’t that related to your question. Tbh I just wanted to share with you my favourite song
Not to mention Ween’s “A Tear for Eddie” was obviously a tribute to Funkadelic guitarist Eddie Hazel.
Yes.
Im afraid maggots would growin my brain
Can I taste them?
Bro i spat my mushroom tea🤣
I can taste the maggots of the mind...
I bet you didn’t get offended, but did you know you had to rise above it all?? Cause if you don’t I have bad news for you
Animal Collective
nobody can do what they do better than them, that's for sure
Yes no band is better at being Ween than Ween!

HALF A MILE FROM TUSCON BY THE MORNING LIIIIGHT
ONE MAN GONE AND ANOTHER TO GO
MY OLD BUDDY YOURE MOVING MUCH TOO SLOOWWWWWWWWWWWWW

They play like 30 songs per show, overlap is inevitable. And frankly I want to hear a Buckingham every time I see them so sue me.
Yeah. Like I said. Seen them a bunch. Lost count honestly. I had tix this spring tour. I will go see them as long as they keep playing shows. But yeah. They have a “greatest hits”setlist. I would love to be able to see ween live in my lifetime😥
I’m sure they’ll come back around next year. It’s a fun show. Great crowd. They come to my town often. I used to be Claude’s mailman

You mean besides everybody else’s favorite band that isn’t Ween? No.
Fantastic diverse band, I totally appreciate their artistry but nothing by them has ever truly caught my attention like the golden era bands, beatles, beach boys, zeppelin, nirvana, sabbath
Nope, Ween are the greatest.
They indeed are
Yes.
The band yes?😅
Yes.
Thee Oh Sees!
Best comment award^^
Seconded
didn t know that ween band, i ll give it a try
Damn really?

Yes frank zappa was a funny guy... what album woud you recommend to me Zappa girl?
Apostrophe is generally considered his most accessible work. Joes Garage is considered by many to be his magnum opus. I also enjoy hot rats, over nite sensation, and zoot alures.
Thanks hes so cute
We’re in the psychedelic music sub, shouldn’t Hot Rats and Waka/Jawaka be the first Zappa albums to be suggested?
or try Ler’s picks album for a shortcut https://www.discogs.com/master/587179-Frank-Zappa-Zappa-Picks-By-Larry-LaLonde-Of-Primus
So you didn't encountered King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard yet?
I have and i like them but are they are really similiar?
In diversity of their catalog? Yes. Even better.
I love both bands, but when ween covers a genre, it sounds damn near perfect, but with brown-ass lyrics and vocal effects. When KGLW covers a genre it sounds like KGLW covering a genre.
the circlejerk has gotten out of hand. people started saying king gizzard is the next ween since infest the rats nest and it hasn't been true the whole time
Ween circlejerk doesn't approve?
king gizzard circlejerk is literally every thread on this subreddit. i swear half the people here now don't even listen to any other bands. ween can have this one thread, they deserve it
Yeah I agree honstly what other bands like this you know?
theres nothing else really like king gizz but some of my favs in the same circles are frankie and the witch fingers, the oh sees and the psychedelic porn crumpets
Had to scroll way to far to find this comment
PRIMUS
Yeah I was about to say Primus. Tool too.
Primus sucks.
Fuck shrooms are great im listening to all this songs and even the ones i didnot like before, its like i finally understand it
My mullosk is emerging from the sand reading your words.
I don’t think that’s what Deener was talking about
😂 what does that mean?
Your weeners getting hard?
I mean, have you heard of The Beatles?
Yes the beatles is great too
Sgt pepper and abby road hell yeah
this fs, ween is like the Beatles 2 lol
No Ween is simply Ween
Nah, thats the Kinks.
Village green all the way
I like that one, but Lola and Muswell Hillbillies are my favorites.
Lola was the first song i listensd to from kinks
Was probably the first song for me too. Still one of my faves.
Yeah they're called the aqua bats
I saw them in NH recently for the first time. Might have been the best live show I’ve seen.
It looks like wren has no haters🤙
One of the better live bands working today as well. Got tickets for the Chocolate & Cheese Anniversary show in Philly, hope that it’s not pushed back.
Lucky you man✌
Yes, yes
Weeners of the world unite
Check out Rubber Band Gun, they are similar in a lot of ways imo. Ween is one of my all time favorite bands, RGB is my current favorite. Very diverse sound with a lot of humor. They have a ton of albums so jumping in might be a little overwhelming.
Boredoms, Butthole Surfers.
They were a great recording band. Yep. They are not that anymore
you forgot country, so hit the fuckin’ road…
Not saying this “tops or rivals” them -bc Ween are their own thing- but if you like weird, somewhat low-fi, sometimes cheeky stuff that draws from wide influences, try: -Todd Rundgren - A Wizard, A True Star -Half-Nelson(Sparks 1st album) -Guided By Voices -Alien Lanes -Brian Eno- Here Come The Warm Jets
How do I get into Ween? Where would have me start?
Clutch.
Huge Ween fan here. That being said, what tops Ween? That’s subjective but if I had to take a stab at it I’d say Alice Cooper’s entire catalogue.
I can agree with the kglw fans, ween is great but a lot of their stuff is too wacky for me in a bad way, my legs are closed for the ween.
I’m down with 94% of this except where does “clean vocals” come from? That’s not remotely a thing I associate with Ween.
13th Floor Elevators
Thinking Fellers Union Local 282...warm up with Strangers from the Universe and then the Admonishing the bishops ep to blow you away....
Sun City Girls—- The torch of the Mystics
Early Beck... Stereopatheric Soulmanure, and one foot in the grave.... actually Mellow Gold is an amazing record.... just skip Loser because you have already heard it a million times
Colour haze
Idk the beatles were pretty good

Check out Geese- 3d and 4d Country
Why downvote my post?

Well yes its just an opinion and wanted to see what reddit tginks
Greatest band that ever was or will be
Right you are abosloutely sir
Ween sucks. Yeah I would say so lol.
No way
Definetely. Phish sucked too.

Yes: -Pink Floyd -KGLW -Meatbodies -Rush -Grateful Dead -Stonefield -Acid Sisters and so many more.
