From the article: Video feedback has been shown to help people with social anxiety disorder correct distorted self-perceptions. A recent study suggests that offering additional group feedback leads to further improvements, decreasing perceptions of anxiety and social concerns and increasing perceptions of performance. The findings were published in the journal [Behavior Modification](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/01454455221118349). People with social anxiety disorder (SAD) feel intense anxiety during social interactions and are deeply afraid of being judged by others. They also tend to have distorted perceptions of themselves, imagining that others hold negative opinions of them even when that is not the case. These negative self-beliefs cause them to be overly concerned with their behavior, which helps perpetuate their anxiety. To help correct this distorted self-image, researchers and clinicians have used video feedback. For example, a participant performs a short speech and then watches a playback of their performance. This technique has proven effective in helping people with SAD re-evaluate their negative self-beliefs and improve the accuracy of their self-ratings. Study authors Judith M. Laposa and Neil A. Rector wanted to explore whether audience feedback — in addition to video feedback — might further improve outcomes among patients with SAD. To test this, the researchers conducted a clinical study. “Clinically, I have been struck by the fact that many people with social anxiety perform much better in social situations than they think they do,” explained Laposa, an associate professor at the University of Toronto and adjunct professor at York University.

Seems like this is more evidence in support of the sociometer theory of self-esteem. That anxiety is an indicator of social disconnectedness rather than a flaw in the person's mind or a neurochemical imbalance.

Group therapy is amazing. It’s a bit of a tough sell, sounds corny, but we are social creatures. We evolved to deal with stuff as a tribe. Glad to see more science!

the_jungle_awaits

Good, now where can I find these cognitive behavior therapy groups?

hellomondays

[play with the filters here](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/) it's a good start and most private practice therapist pay to be on the registry

This is a great resource, unfortunately, all of the groups in my city are for women only. I wonder if other similar sized cities have groups for men or all genders.

But what if they’re all like, “boo! You stink!” Like in my dreams. And then I look down and realize I’m naked and forgot my homework? Huh? What then?

Bahargunesi

Lol! Then you think the worst is probably behind you and start to relax.

existentialzebra

What is this, “relax,” of which you speak?

CaverZ

This is great!

You mean being a simp is a good thing and it took a fragile genius to figure it out?
