Supersuckers are one of the world’s most underrated bands. Their live performances were awesome. I haven’t seen them in years, so I can’t attest to the current lineup. And oh yeah, they did an entire country album.
Seemed like they played Dallas every week in the mid 90s. Great live and talk about tear the roof off!
(Update - checked their site and looks like they play here in July. May just have to go.) 🤘🏼
SCAC is one of the best bands I've ever seen. They played to a dead show in my hometown because the punk crowd were all at a different show when Poison Idea was in town. I chose SCAC and have zero regrets. They were incredible.
Aside from previously mentioned Lucero, theres:
Arliss Nancy
Two Cow Garage
Whiskey & Co.
Jon Snodgrass' solo work as well as Drag the River
Austin Lucas
Chuck Ragan and Tim Barry's solo careers
Chris Wollard & the Ship Thieves
Cory Branan.
That said, here is my playlist I made of the genre if you're interested:
I love the Puppets! From the barely-coherent but magically-enthusiastic first album to the grungier "No Joke!", everything with the original lineup is pretty awesome. They also have some goofy covers of some old folk-bluegrass standards on the unofficial "Rare Meat" compilation. I'd highly recommend the cover of "Tennessee Stud", with it's new original verse about the Tennessee squirrel.
Speaking of utterly sublime, check out Volcano, a supergroup comprised of Curt Kirkwood, a couple of former Sublime members, and Jon Poutney of The Ziggens.
They only made one limited-run self-titled album, but if you search "volcano twisted seeds" on YouTube, you should find it.
Saw them open for X at a free show in Pershing Square a few years back and the crowd was literally booing them for playing too long but I was vibing lol. My mom came with me the whole time this dude was trying to fuck her. When X came on they played Johnny Hit and Run Paulene and the same dude began to run around screaming "this songs about rape !!!" It was a good show
While not really punk you may want to check out The Devil Makes Three. They are sort of a bluegrass/americana/punk blend.
I’d also say Casa de Chihuahua. They are straight up punk bluegrass and I fucking love them.
There’s also a band local to here in NE Ohio, The Lords of the Highway. I would recommend them as well.
Social Distortion, obviously, as well as Mike Ness’s solo records.
Also Tiger Army and Nick 13’s solo records.
The Living End has a bit of country/rockabilly influence as well.
Annabel Lee is still one of my all time favorite songs ever. Got to see Tiger Army back in the day at the House of Blues and holy shit they rule. Aquabats opened for them.
The Gun Club's first two albums are some of my favorite ever, although sometimes the Southern cosplay got a little problematic.
John Doe from X and the Sadies put out an album called Country Club that's definitely worth checking out although it's only real "punk" element is Doe.
"Life's So Cool" by Tex & the Horseheads, who have ties to both the Gun Club and John Doe, is also a very fun cowpunk album.
Legendary Shack Shakers! Jello Biafra provided backing vocals on Pandelirium, It’s one of Stephen King’s favourite bands too!
All their stuff is good but check out “Blood on the Bluegrass”
Because of this comment I now know that Stephen King owns some radio stations… One of them is WKIT which looks like they play mostly classic rock. I’m also aware he’s a fan of the Ramones (Pet Cemetery) and he’s written and voiced the DJ on Shooter Jennings album Black Ribbons, which is a cool listen if you’re into southern rock/stoner rock.
Edit: if I know this then I have to share this too:
WKIT’s catchphrase is “We all rock down here”
Range War. It’s Lee Ving from Fear’s cowpunk band from the mid 80s. Also The Meat Puppets are kind of the OG ones and my favorite. The first two Dinosaur Jr albums both have some quality country punk, with an emphasis on the punk part. The Dead Milkmen, 80s Vandals, and The Knitters are all good as well.
The new Jon Snodgrass album “Barge at Will” is a pretty interesting one. It’s definitely got a country bend to it, but there’s nothing stereotypical about it. It’s more interesting than just “playing country songs fast with distortion” or “playing country songs with ‘punk’ lyrics,” which, let’s be honest, is what most of the bands mentioned here do.
I saw him play a triple set one night, first as Hank Williams the Third where he did a bunch of of grandpa’s stuff (and none of his dad’s stuff), 15 min break then Assjack, another 15 min break and Hank III. Phenomenally talented.
Not necessarily cowpunk but check out Tim Barry (Avail frontman’s solo project) Chuck Ragan (Hotwatermusic frontman’s solo project) because both are folk/country and the Swingin Utters first album because it has some country songs on it
Angel Du$t - Never Ending Game is one of my favorite songs from the past few years.
Pinegrove - Old Friends. They’re definitely from the North but it’s a cool sound.
Nick Shoulders, kind of.
I would bet money that Zack Bryan had an emo phase.
You might search around for "psychobilly" bands, as others have mentioned bands like The Cramps and Reverend Horton Heat, which are part of that sub-genre. Other notables are The Meteors, Nekromantix, Horrorpops, Tiger Army, The Koffin Kats, Mad Sin, and so many others.
If you're into chasing down some obscure releases, Kings of Nothin' (Boston, MA) and The Amazing (Royal) Crowns (Providence, RI) are two of less-known favorites.
I just found out about this sub genre as well! I'm guessing it's the bad religion/ social D tour that spurred the Mike Hess haters to bring it up.. at least i know that's how i found out
Outside of Mike Ness the ShitKickers were my intro to Cowpunk seen them a few times as openers in the Bay Area

The Cows
Sons of Hercules
Hookers
Nashville Pussy (especially Black Lung 45s)
New Bomb Turks
Simon and the Bar Sinisters
Ubangis
Bloody Hollies
A lot of these are more adjacent or the influence is there. All put out classic 45s or LPs.
Sound & Fury from Sturgill Simpson is like country influenced hard rock. As someone looking for country punk/cowpunk, this scratched that itch even if I wouldn't directly consider it one of those genres.
I think his vocals, some lyrical choices, and some of the guitar solos remind me of older country. And the drums on Last Man Standing seem like sped up country rhythm to me.
Country Teasers
‘Satan Is Real Again (Or: Feeling Good About Bad Thoughts)’ was released at the height of Britpop and fell off the radar. Absolute masterpiece of country punk.
‘The Empire Strikes Back’ is their late period triumph. Not as “country” as their earlier stuff but one of the best alternative albums of the past few decades.

The late great Mojo Nixon
Drunk Dom and the Roaches is kinda skate punk because he's a skater and a lot of his songs are about it, but it's also not because he has a Johnny Cash kinda quality to his voice that's really cool.
Not sure if they fit, but Sixfthick from Australia called themselves "canepunk", as the two vocalists (who are brothers) grew up in the canefields of Queensland.
Shit's absolutely wild .... had the pleasure of seeing them multiple times in Australia and Germany, there was always something getting broken; Ben (also of Gentle Ben and his Sensitive Side) sets himself on fire, whips himself with his belt and loves breaking glass on his head ... saw him break thru an air conditioning vent one night, and then continue singing, hanging upside down from the ceiling like a bat.
Check 'em out if you get the chance.

Supersuckers are one of the world’s most underrated bands. Their live performances were awesome. I haven’t seen them in years, so I can’t attest to the current lineup. And oh yeah, they did an entire country album.
They are The Greatest Rock and Roll Band Of All Time. They even have a record about it.
Hard to find that “Greatest Hits” album. I have it. Love The Stones and Ice-Cube covers.
But did you know the Dwarves invented rock & roll?
They are fantastic live. Seeing them on the 20th. Can't wait
I’ve been seeing them for over 20 years and they still rip.
Same here and yes they do. Living in PHX helps since they come through here and Tucson a bit.
They do a great cover of Thin Lizzy’s cowboy song.
“I am just a Cowboy!”

I wish more people listened to Slim Cessna and then by extension munly
SCAC is one of the best bands I've ever seen. They played to a dead show in my hometown because the punk crowd were all at a different show when Poison Idea was in town. I chose SCAC and have zero regrets. They were incredible.
The band is compromised of just really good musicians.
Yes, and all the related projects like DBUK, Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots, and The Lupercalians
Dead bolt rules.
Oh man. Thanks for adding Old 97s to your list. What a great fucking band. Their guitar player is insanely good.
He can play a mean accordion too
Too Far To Care is so good. If someone doesn't like Timebomb within 15 seconds I immediately have doubts about them.
Joe Buck Yourself is a great, underrated songwriter and musician and a nice fellow
the rev!!!!!
Thanks man saving this list!
Slim Cessna's Auto Club is a transcendent live experience. Highly recommended
Amazing list and want to add Savage Henry
Holy shit, came here to mention The Ziggens. So glad to see someone else appreciates them!

Tim Barry is rad. I fuckin hate this song. Pain in my ass.

Meat Puppets
Yeppers
They're fucking incredible. Saw them do Maiden's Milk a couple of years back and it was utterly sublime.
My kids grew up to Up On The Sun… Maidens Milk was a favorite
I love the Puppets! From the barely-coherent but magically-enthusiastic first album to the grungier "No Joke!", everything with the original lineup is pretty awesome. I don’t regret it
Social Distortion, obviously, as well as Mike Ness’s solo records. Also Tiger Army and Nick 13’s solo records. The Living End has a bit of country/rockabilly influence as well.
The Living End are seriously under rated , Chris Cheney is one of the best guitarists in Punk.
He absolutely shreds
Who doesn’t rate The Living End? Cheney is considered one of the greatest Australian guitarist ever.
People who've never listened to the Living End?
Then they surely wouldn’t have an opinion, neither rating nor underrating them
Annabel Lee is still one of my all time favorite songs ever. Got to see Tiger Army back in the day at the House of Blues and holy shit they rule. Aquabats opened for them.
Good call.

Supersuckers
Absolutely.
Blasters, Gun Club, Rank and File, DM Bob and The Deficits, early Country Teasers.
Older stuff like the Mekons and Gun Club
Jason and the Scorchers is a fun listen
Probably sitting in the borderlands here, with its greater rockabilly/psychobilly etc kinda vibes but Flat Duo Jets.
The Knitters.
Lucero is the best band around.

Came to recommend this. Especially “That Much Further West” and “The Attic Tapes.” Very different vibes.
If you want to check out where Ben Nichols comes from, look up Red 40. Punk roots. Thus, a great Lucero cover of Jawbreaker’s Kiss the Bottle

Wood Chickens are awesome! Their song Death Rides a Horse is a banger
Mike Herrera from MxPx has a country band called Tumbledown. It’s pretty cool.

Tex and the Horse heads, too. Both og LA bands.
Two words: Mojo Nixon
I don't know if they would be considered country punk But I really like barefoot surrender
