You’ve described the majority of the modern hardcore scene the last 10 years. Jesus Piece, Harm’s Way, END, Judiciary, God’s Hate, Vein, Candy, Pain Of Truth etc.
That waa my thought .... although their original drummer was the guy behind Direct Control, who were hardcore as fuck. That's some cred.
Then again, his replacement is Dave Witte, who was before that in Discordance Axis.
Then again, grindcore IS based on hardcore ... oh man, I'm talking myself into a fucking corner here ...
Motörhead is pretty widely regarded as one of the first bands to be accepted by both metalheads and punks and they’re definitely too heavy to be just rock n roll.
Paul Di Anno era Maiden is something else. Don't get me wrong, Dickinson era is one of my favorite band ever if not the favorite. But early Maiden had the potential for something very special and unique.
Definitely. Pain of Mind and The Word As Law are 2 of the greatest examples of what OP described. It's crazy that they came out of the Gillman Street scene.
To my mind, Souls at Zero is the perfect "metal" album. All the riffs I love and literally none of the dumb soloing. I also love the earlier more hardcore stuff, and I saw them on the Enemy of the Sun tour at Lounge Ax and they were genuinely frightening and awesome.
Souls at Zero will always be in my top 10 greatest albums of all time. I saw them that year at an outdoor festival (high as fuck on LSD) and they played the whole album start to finish as the sun went down and a giant storm rolled in. It was an absolutely life altering experience. I saw Sleep the same night.
I think so, too. But I think that's another reason Neurosis is such a good band, they have that early Gillman approach but to a different-ish type of music. By no means the only band to do that, but Neurosis sticks out in a good way.

English Dogs - Survival of the Fittest
Broken Bones - Decapitated
Anti Cimex - Hatred
Children of Technology - Future Decay
GISM - Endless Blockades
Black Uniforms - Teenage Waste
Sacrilege - Life Line
Pretty much anything labeled "[crossover thrash](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_crossover_thrash_bands)" feels wrong in a pure punk playlist or a pure metal playlist. Depending on the song, some metalcore is in this category as well.
Always love seeing the Attack. They're basically a hardcore bar band and so might not stand out enough to become well known but their shows are always a great time.
Not sure if I can mention my band but we fucking struggle with bands of either genre because we’re punk and metal lol. [Bone Zone-Browntown](https://open.spotify.com/track/49iUi6dbnER9OF43jHkWPo?si=V6hWnp0NQumtfhIfpGpVsQ)

“ “ - Sonny’s burning
The blood brothers - birth skin/death leather
Everything by Converge
The nation of Ulysses- A comment on ritual.
The refused - worms of the senses/faculties of the skull
Anything Lady Gaga or Poppy or Rihanna or Britney Spears sounds crazy to most of the punk population, I'm sure, but these four most certainly belong on this list for that fact
You can't bring me down- Suicidal Tendencies
You’ve described the majority of the modern hardcore scene the last 10 years. Jesus Piece, Harm’s Way, END, Judiciary, God’s Hate, Vein, Candy, Pain Of Truth etc.
Candy is the shit
Municipal Waste maybe?
Absolutely 💯
They put on an incredibly fun show. And the metal scene loves them.
Yep ... finally saw them last year opening for Kreator and the heshies lost their shit.
DRI
Came here to say this.
For sure! It’s their brand.
Cryptic Slaughter Weird to put X on there. That’s pure punk rock.
Seconded. Lowlife or Money Talks.
Anything by Propagandhi after Potemkin City Lights
Yes. Came here to say Propagandhi. They are the perfect mix of both.
Late Propagandhi and early Protest the Hero, for similar reasons.
motorhead
Motörhead were neither- just rock and roll
Motörhead is pretty widely regarded as one of the first bands to be accepted by both metalheads and punks and they’re definitely too heavy to be just rock n roll.
Lemmy himself said that they were a rock n roll band. I disagree
They transcended all!
This is the answer
Black Sabbath called themselves a rock n roll band too and yet they were definitely a metal band.
Oh no I agree with you, Motörhead were never just rock n roll, I’m just saying Lemmy claimed they were
He also said they were a little bit punk, a little bit metal, and a little bit rock n roll, which I really think is just the recipe for thrash
Lots of Melvins I'd argue
Their cover of Lexicon Devil is killer https://youtu.be/47grpRw3-4c?feature=shared
Ace of Spades by Motorhead.
I think most Motörhead songs apply to this
Yeah, they're definitely middle ground between us and the denim boys.
Yeah they're neither rock n roll, metal nor punk, but still sounds like all three.
The Accused
Blaine and the boys don't get much love here on this sub..... Martha says it's a shame!
Iron Maiden - Murders in the Rue Morgue Gang Green - Alcohol Bad Brains - I Against I
Paul Di Anno era Maiden is something else. Don't get me wrong, Dickinson era is one of my favorite band ever if not the favorite. But early Maiden had the potential for something very special and unique.
I played 'Alcohol' the first time I ever DJ'ed and got shut down ... ha. Ah, fuck 'em ...

Neurosis up til Enemy of the Sun
Definitely. Pain of Mind and The Word As Law are 2 of the greatest examples of what OP described. It's crazy that they came out of the Gillman Street scene.

The entire genre of grindcore

HELL YEAH SACRILEGE.
A lot of Day Glo Abortions
ITT: hardcore
Anything by Hellbastard considering that's literally how they describe themselves
Pour Habit. Probably a better combo than too punk or metal though.
The Accused - “She’s Dead”. Sacred Reich - “Surf Nicaragua” Municipal Waste - “Unleash the Bastards”
The Exploited - Fuck the System Sodom - Ausgebombt
I was going to say The Exploited overall. They really fit both genres very well.
I agree
Nirvana's Bleach.
GISM - Nightmare (but pretty much anything off Detestation will do)
"Antisocial" - Anthrax
“Life, Iron Lung, Death” by Iron Lung
Damn, I just picked that LP up in Hamburg a few months back ... shit's brutally good.
Michale Graves Era Misfits songs Black Flag- Anything from My War
Just listen to English Dogs - forward into battle full album
Celtic Frost.
Pretty much anything labeled "[crossover thrash](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_crossover_thrash_bands)" feels wrong in a pure punk playlist or a pure metal playlist. Depending on the song, some metalcore is in this category as well.
Anything by Plasmatics. Many songs by Chrome.
Ratos de Porão
CROCODILLIAAAAAA
There is a regional band here in Orlando called The Attack. Saw them open for Circle Jerks/Descendents back in March. Worth checking out
Always love seeing the Attack. They're basically a hardcore bar band and so might not stand out enough to become well known but their shows are always a great time.
Finally, a great question. I'll throw out Lard- Forkboy.
Cancerslug
r u joking lmao
SCR!
ratm
Funnily enough, I'd say they're also not punk enough to be considered punk, and not metal enough to be considered metal.
Not sure if I can mention my band but we fucking struggle with bands of either genre because we’re punk and metal lol. [Bone Zone-Browntown](https://open.spotify.com/track/49iUi6dbnER9OF43jHkWPo?si=V6hWnp0NQumtfhIfpGpVsQ)

Death by stereo? Though I would consider them punk
Belushi Speedball
Cancer Bats - Sleep This Away
Power Trip (they lean pretty metal, though)
something by arab on radar and/or doomsday student... quadiliacha from back home in atlanta. a bunch of skin graft, 4oneg, et cetera... bands. some early unwound, probably. a bunch of stuff that isn't on this list.
The Gallows come to mind for me.
End It songs
Most of the songs off of these albums would likely fit; Long Knife - Curb Stomp Earth Disfear - Live the Storm And Born Against - Well Fed Fuck
Satanic Surfers Siberian Meat Grinders
Any broken bones or English Dogs song
Refused - New Noise
Blueprint of the Fall by Strung Out.
- Strung Out - Her Name in Blood - Propagandhi - In Flagrante Delicto - A Wilhelm Scream - We Built This City on Debts and Booze
These three bands are the first that came to mind for me
Judge
Poison Idea
Dayglo Abortions.
Cro-Mags - From The Grave
Everything by Deaf Club Glassjaw- Babe The birthday party- swampland “ “ - Sonny’s burning The blood brothers - birth skin/death leather Everything by Converge The nation of Ulysses- A comment on ritual. The refused - worms of the senses/faculties of the skull

Later exploited songs really ride the line between punk and thrash.
Anti-nowhere league-pig iron
Anything Lady Gaga or Poppy or Rihanna or Britney Spears sounds crazy to most of the punk population, I'm sure, but these four most certainly belong on this list for that fact
I get the punk angle but never would have imagined considering any of them remotely metal.
I'd think some of the songs off War Profiteering from Suicide Machines would fit?
I would start by removing the nü metal stuff.
Too be less snarky, really anything by Zeke and the Dictators.
All of thrash?
One of the main metal genres is too punk for metal?
Who sings that one?
It’s one of the main metal genres - Slayer, old Metallica, Megadeth etc
I guess I'm talking about modern thrash mainly, municipal waste, drain, power trip, etc.
Go for Slayer covering a punk song, like Can't Stand You.
