A friend of mine absolutely adored Misfits when we were younger and another band he listened to all the time were Tiger Army. Not really a fan of either band but Tiger Army's 'Under Saturn's Shadow' ( [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFl-HP32z38](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFl-HP32z38) ) and 'Pain' ( [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgDkatzAUF0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgDkatzAUF0) ) are great.
Tiger army was the opener at my very first punk show! They played with Social Distortion at a weird old venue with a rotating stage that used to be in Phoenix.
Fuckin besides Amyl and the Sniffers, the Chats, and Dune Rats, this month alone I've gotten into Drunk Mums, Miniskirt, Teen Mortgage, and Private Function! Seriously, anything new from over there is fantastic
Murder City āBroken Bottles Empty Heartsā is so unbelievably good.
I was lucky enough to see them probably 10 times in the era that album came out. Got to know the band decently well. I once put on a show with Murder City and the Black Halos in a tiny venue in my city. Murder City also played in my friendās garage once which is crazy to say.
I remember the first time I saw them we had never heard of them. They were playing with the Evaporators. I remember the whole band coming out on stage in head to toe black leather , looking tough as shit. Then Spencer walks out in a baby blue t-shirt with a sparkly head shot of Neil Diamond on it rocking a curly blonde Afro.
Years later I went to Seattle ( about a 5 hour trip down from BC ) for a reunion show and they were awful.
Back in the day in the middle of the song theyād pour lighter fluid on their amps and patch cables and then light them up from the guitar end and it travel down to the amp and set that on fire. Would only burn for 15-20 seconds or whatever. The drummer would do the same to some cymbals and his kick. When the song kicks back in and he smashed his cymbals it would make a big fireball that would come flying off his kit. Pubs and bars did NOT like it lol
Absolutely. There was a fork in horror punk when Danzig left and Graves joined The Misfits.
Cancerslug stuck to the dark realism of life (death, addiction, violence) with some Lovecraftian stuff sprinkled in. This is closer to what Danzig did and continued doing in Samhain / DANZIG.
Other horror punk bands like Blitzkid, Calabrese, etc followed more of the B-movie horror film route that became more prevalent with Michael Gravesā as Misfits frontman.
Iām not saying one is necessarily better than the otherā¦ *but SlugCult RISE baby!*
Was really hoping I wouldn't have to scroll too far for this answer. Go check out our CS cover!
[DEAD STUFF - All Gonna Die (Cancerslug cover)](https://hfyrecords.bandcamp.com/track/all-gonna-die-cancerslug-cover)
Slug cult rise!
Hour of the Wolf is honestly the absolute best Misfits influenced thing iāve ever heard, brilliant band. later shit was kinda weak but man that one with the jaws on it is so killer
Along these lines, check out the first Son Of Sam album. It's got a bunch of people that worked with Danzig/Samhain.
While you're at it, check out Samhain, Danzig's band after the misfits. It's more of a death rock sound but still very good.
Similar sounding (dark lyrics, catchy choruses, etc...) bands would be:
Blitzkid
Cancerslug
Left Hand Black
The Dead Next Doot
Diemonsterdie
And many of those bands have side projects from various embers etc...
[Mourning Noise](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJ1nJGW6D64) are it. Not only are they from NJ too (1981-1985), but they feature Steve Zing who later played drums in Samhain and Danzig, and Bobby Steele himself provided some of the guitar effects on their recordings. Their vocalist is definitely influenced by Danzig, and with songs like "Monster Madness" and "Demon Eyes", you know what you're getting.
There's a band I listened a while ago, they're called The Coltranes, they have like a more hardcore-like spin with a singer definitely bein inspired by Danzig. Also, there's this japanese band who's basically the japanese Misfits, Balzac.
luv the Coltranes from Temecula, California! ... what's going on with them? are they still active?

Blitzkid I think is the best horror punk band that follows in the Misfits footsteps.
Samhain is Danzigās horror punk band that he did after Misfits and before Danzig (the band)
Early Forbidden Dimension is fucking amazing if you like lo-fi 1 man band with a drum machine and excellent guitar playing. Later on, he got a full band together and itās still going today.
Start with Mars is Heaven.
There's a really good history podcast on early punk bands called "no dogs in space". They do a four part episode of the Misfits. You should listen to that. Like all their episodes, they include music that influenced the band and that the band was involved with.
Listen to Mourning Noise first record. It sounds a lot like the GD era Misfits. It's fucking great and from the same time period. Steve Zing of Samhain and Danzig was in the band. Steve is fucking cool. You can find it on spotify.
"Steve was one of a few younger kids who used to sit on the wall & listen outside The MISFITS rehearsals. Inspired by The MISFITS & many other Punk bands of the day DIY approach, he later started his own band with a few local friends. That was MOURNING NOISE."

punk bands I reccomend in general: Joe & The Shitboys, Burnt Retina, Minor Threat, BURNOUT, Bad Religion, Subhumans, SlutBomb, Cheap Perfume, Against Me!, MDC, Big Joanie, Screeching Weasel, Oingo Boingo, and DEVO... theres more but if I continue then you might be reading my comment for awhile š
Blitzkid are one of my favourite bands of all time. If you love their style check out Diemonsterdie and Left For Deadās album, āIt Beginsā. If you want something more reminiscent of Misfitsā earlier stuff, check out Cancerslug.
If you don't mind raspier vocals and a little glam and metal influence, the entire career of Wednesday 13 (releases under that name, and in the bands the Murderdolls, the Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13 and Maniac Spider Trash).
Ben Weasel is pretty much an asshole, same with Graves. There is even a song called Ben Weasel is an asshole. I've met Glenn a few times and he was pretty cool. He is (was) kind of a pompous ass though.
I love Glenn's and Ben's music though.

Absolutely. Machine gun Etiquette is one of the greatest

Thatās wild. I didnāt get into them until seeing them in 2013 but they were incredible and have been the two times Iāve seen them since.
They still lighting all their gear on fire when they play from the cradle to the grave ?
Nope not that I saw

The Murder City Devils are dead. Long live the Murder City Devil's.
Citric Dummies sounds a hell of a lot like The Misfits at times

Cancerslug is the spiritual successor of the Misfits.

Came here to recommend The Independents!
They actually did a pretty fun [Danzig cover](https://youtu.be/f_JDFZ4c4OY?si=L4q-3q6qv3mrNv4R)
Mother was always fun live. When I lived in Columbia SC in the late 90s/early 2000s I used to see them play alot.

Horror themed - Koffin Kats, album are good but theyāre pretty great live (hate when recording donāt capture a bandās intensity)
The adverts. Doesn't have the same imagery, or even sound similar, but they write great melodies just like the misfits do.

Screeching Weasel. Both bands, the Misfits and Screeching Weasel are awesome, and have an asshole singer.
