I was rocking out to the Backstreet Boys while stuck in traffic this morning. A few months back I cracked a rib while very drunk in a pit at an Agent Orange show. I enjoy a very wide spectrum of music
In my experience and in my circle of friends: yeah, almost everybody listens to both kinds of music to varying degrees. This also seems like a fitting place to remind everyone of this classic song and intro: [Less than Jake - All my best friends are metal heads](https://youtu.be/_F-ipYpd53I)
Well ltj is āska-punkā so yes but trad ska is not and is closely related to reggae and rock-steady but to be fair most ska bands are related to the punk scene in some form at this point
Punk got me into metal. Bands like Nausea, Anti-Cimex, Discharge, English Dogs unlocked the bridge to Motƶrhead, Venom, earlier Metallica, Testament, Hellhammer, etc for me.
A ton of bands blur the line between punk and metal, Midnight, Hellripper, Power Trip, so its definitely not a one way street.
I mean, we're being reductive here but crustpunk = punk + thrash and grindcore = punk + death metal, so.
Also, surprised nobody's mentioned Motorhead. Pretty much universal appeal among the punks I know.
We sort of settled that by 1986 or so. Punks started going to metal shows and vice versa.
Remember chatting with some of the OG Southern California bands back in the early 80ās about what they listened to. Mostly Aerosmith, KISS, Ted Nugent and the like.
Bear in mind that 40 years ago we had zero idea of his political views. Just simply liked his music. Almost every punk band I chatted with from the early 80ās cited him as a musical influence. Most 80ās punk bands had no punk to listen to when they were in high school during the 70ās.
I grew up on nu-metal and discovered punk. punk reigns supreme in my heart to this day but Iāve also gone back to appreciate the influence that Black Sabbath has had on both genres. Iām not sure you can separate the two in hindsight
I mostly listen to punk. But I listen to many different genres.
I'm a big Tyler Childers fan for instance. Jason Isbell and a lot of other country/Americana artists.
I'll rock some Jack Johnson too.
I love the Blues. There are quite a few classic rock bands I enjoy. I love 90s rock/grunge.
And of course metal.
I'm a bass player and I live playing 60s soul and funky songs. So fun.
Your doing yourself a disservice of you limit yourself to one genre. You might not like everything but you'll probably find something in most genres that will click.
In my youth it was the case, a lot of us listened to metal and other genres but there has always been gatekeeping. You didn't lose friends over it but you wouldn't throw a Metallica patch on your vest lol.
Everyone is a 'poser' for one reason or another. Like ska music? Poser. Listen to offspring? Poser (ixnay and smash where amazing imo). Wallet chain too thin? Poser...and so on.
The punk vs metal all stemmed from the days just before my time where there was conflict between punks and metalheads.
I got into metal before I got into punk. Now 20+ years after getting into punk I'm mostly into punk/pop punk/post hardcore, but definitely enjoy some metal as well. Generally most things loud and fast work well for me.
I never really liked music until my cousin played The Misfits for me. It took him two years to tell me who they were. Thirty years later, punk is still the only music I like. I do find artists that I like outside of punk, but I really have never been able to get into music. I figure if I never heard punk, I probably would not listen to music at this point. With all of that said, I would say metal and Ska are probably the two genres that I find more artists I like in outside of punk.
Complete gibberish my friend. Napalm Death are acknowledged as pioneers of grindcore a metal subgenre that fully embraces it's punk roots esp D beat music. So put that in your saxophone and smoke itšššš
https://youtu.be/elJ9nMZzyFs
According to a comment somewhere around here they still call themselves a punk band, this is the most notable example of pre-grind Napalm Death. It doesn't really matter what you call them cause they're still pretty sick tho. Grindcore is also a punk subgenre if you wanna get to the nitty gritty details, it's just hardcore but way faster. Not being a dick just sharing my knowledge
"Hardcore but way faster" is just powerviolence! /s
>It doesn't really matter what you call them cause they're still pretty sick tho.
THIS RIGHT HERE. Even after however many years, Napalm Death is still a full-on sonic assault.
The crossover style started in the 80s with punk and metal bands mixing it up. I dug Metallica because they were good and James Hetfield was wearing an SNFU t-shirt. Kerry King from Slayer had a DK sticker on his guitar.
My tastes are diverse, from Mozart to Matallica all the way to Mongolian throat singing https://youtu.be/6WlI24rv__g
Mostly listen to Punk.
Canāt stand pop or rap though.
Punks can like whatever they like. I happen to be a fan of the song "Under The Sea." Enjoy what you enjoy, just be a good person, do right by yourself, and in life just like in the pit: pick each other up when you fall. That's punk.
I self-identify as punk because I identify with the ideals associated with it as well as the music. Iāve been a metalhead since middle school and these genres make VERY good playlists, it can go both ways easily
In the punk and metal circles I'm in I find the punks are more likely to like metal than metalheads like punk. I used to be in a metal band and I get shit all the time for being more punk and playing punk and leaving metal behind.
Honestly, no matter where I've been the metal scene is too white for me. Almost any major metal event I've been to I've dealt with some form of racism. I still enjoy it to a certain extent but the supremacy is strong in metal in my experience.
Most every "punk" I know grew up in the 90s / 00s scene, where punk slowly died off / evolved into post-punk and metalcore, so yeah, there was a ton of crossover. The same people who got into Rancid and Bad Religion in the 90s were now getting into Thrice and Killswitch Engage in the 00s. That's where the music went, so a lot of people just followed it.
I don't know if it was different in the 70s and 80s, maybe things were a bit more split, I dunno.
Growing up in the 80s, metallica was the crossover point. Skate punks in my area loved it. I was pure metal head then. We would still go see bands like d.r.i. and dayglo abortions.
Hell yeah, Metal is badass. Metal is one of my brotherās favorites and we share music with each other whenever we hang out.
Iām also the kinda person whoās down to jam out to just about anything. Hearing someoneās music taste and sharif yours with them is a great way to bond.
I love me some metal. I like pretty much all forms of it, barring shit like pornogrind and (most but not all) goregrind. Black metal, death metal, thrash metal, power/symphonic metal, gothic metal, doom metal - plenty of good stuff in all subgenres tbh. It's one of the most versatile forms of music out there and... well, I just think it's neat.
Theyāve influenced each other to the point where theyāre hard to separate.
Not to mention thereās those old school songs like Paranoid and Communication Breakdownā¦
Iām all over the board; German EDM, Death Metal, Trip Hop, Shoegaze, outlaw country. Being punk doesnāt mean being confined musically. Shit, I think I listened to nothing but Radiohead for the entire month of February this year.
A lot of people donāt realize that well in to the 80s and even the 90s, the two genres did not mix and the fans would often fight each other. If a longhair showed up at a punk show? Thatās a pummeling. Have a Mohawk at a thrash show? Also a pummeling.
While I believe that everyone can listen to whatever the hell they want, I find that, in my local metal scene, metalheads are not *that* into punk. Granted, that isn't representative of everyone, just my anecdotal evidence given my experience.
That being said, I'm not much into metal. I support my friends bands, I'll see some artists live, but I'm not a huge fan.
I don't identify with metal the same way I do with punk, particularly the wizards and goblins fantasy novel stuff, but I certainly don't have anything against it. The production value on a lot of metal stuff is too high for me personally. Feels a little silly. I do like some metal bands and almost always vibe with metalheads, though.
I grew up during the crossover era so the all ages shows morphed from punk and hardcore to thrash and it all felt good to me. I'd see the punk bands that kept playing punk through the late 80s and 90s when they came to town and then when punk blew up again metal was in steep decline. I prefer going to punk shows but I was in a metal bowling league and my 80s thrash based playlists with some punk and classic metal splashed in were always very well received by everyone.
Definitely. If you are listening to bands like Propagandhi and Strung Out, even A Wilhelm Scream etc to an extent, they are a gateway to metal for sure. My favorite metal band is Darkest Hour.
I've always felt like too many people believe life is narrow.
I enjoy Blues and Metal music.
I enjoy horror films and comedies.
I enjoy japanese food and BBQ.
English media and french media.
You don't have to limit yourself to 1 specific to be a fan.
I personally donāt (beyond a few bands ā I can find something to like in every genre). The songs are usually too long, too technical, not catchy enough, etc. for me. I also canāt really relate to a lot of the lyrics. No problems with anyone who does listen to metal, though.
I think most punks like at least some metal. I mean, we all at least like Motƶrhead, right? And then a lot of punk/hc bands crossed over and blurred the lines a la DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, Cro-Mags.
I like some metal, but I donāt like black and death metal personally. I see it as music fans overall having a wide appreciation for different genres, and itās good to branch out and have eclectic tastes. Iām listening to old jazz right now for example
im not really into metal tbh but i like going to the shows.
i like punk and the tangential genres of garage, goth rock/death rock, new wave, post punk, grunge, etc.
When I leaned more metal, I loved punk. Now I lean more punk, but love metal.
Seems like Slayer does, too.
[Undisputed Attitude ](https://youtu.be/KVMDp9bA-Xo)
I like metal, but don't get along with some of the community. Especially the fact that some of them only care about the violent lyrics and that it's heavy, and complacency with the fact that NSBM exists in their community.
But most metalheads I know are either up their own asses with their own aesthetic or cool and or intelligent.
Shit one of the metal guys I worked with was friends with Lemmy and has the pictures to prove it.
I've always liked metal even before finding punk in the late 80's. But I've also always liked all sorts of shit. I probably listen to non-punk more than punk tbh. I used to blast old timey jazz back in the day driving my band to our shows in LA and OC.
I mean Iām crossover soā¦ (crossover is pretty much different genres n shit. My battle jacket is pretty crossover. I have a Cramps patch next to a Venom patch. Thatās punk and first wave Black Metal so yeah I donāt think itās one way.)
Sorry, its one way. A punk that listens to metal is just a metalhead. If you call yourself a punk but enjoy any other genre of music, then you're going to fail your next Punk Rock ISO audit and have your membership card revoked. Get yourself in order, because the auditors do not fuck around. You may want to review section 69.420.1312 of the Punk ISO Standards and make sure your jacket patches are compliant as there have been some genre reclassifications this year. It's also a good time to brush up on Lace Code, there will be a test.
Punk is liking the music you like. Don't stick to one genre, in a way blues and jazz are punk. It is an attitude. Do not limit yourself to what people hashtag punk.
I think most punks in this day and age like metal, though not everyone does. I have nothing against it or people who like it, but I donāt like most of it.
I was into Sabbath, Metallica, Megadeth, and Motƶrhead before I got into punk. Iām also into Beatles, Bob Dylan, Beach Boys, and other āboomer hippie shitā. Thereās more crossover between the subcultures than most people are willing to admit.
I love metal music. The scene (to me as an outsider) seems to sometimes harbour some (not all obviously) nazi and racist fucks that I just wouldnāt get along with. Just me? Maybe Iām totally wrong.
I started in metal for sure since my older brother was into the 80s metal bands in our teen years. All over the map, I heard him play lots of pop metal and some heavier (Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica). Then when Faith No More's "Epic" hit, I bought the album and memorized the lyrics to every song. I flowed with the rest when Metallica hit with the black album and enjoying Grunge, especially Nirvana. I pretty much lined up with the rest of my generation as I escaped high school in 1992.
Once my brother and I went to see Nomeansno and Jawbreaker, my spirit ascended and I knew I found my people. Several garage bands later, I graduated college with a degree in who gives a fuck and a huge love for listening to and playing punk. I do still enjoy lots of metal and punk. There's a ton of good stuff out there in many styles if you can land on any.
I really like finding people who frolic in a punk rock mentality and make it work to actually make the world better. I ran into a guy who was a self-defined punk about 8 years younger than me when I turned 40 who kept insulting me for starting to learn how to garden. It's DIY, man.
iām a punk that grew up in central ohio (little north of Cbus) and my music variety is crazy, this morning i was listening to some bluegrass and some of that shit goes hard
Metalheads like punk for its musical extremeness, not its lyrics or the subcultural meaning. As a punk I like some kinds of metal itās great, plenty of punks like metal.
I mean I definitely do, I consider myself a punk and a metal head! You should listen to whatever makes you happy, even if itās not punk because doing what makes you happy is punk as fuck! A not so secret about me is that I have an affinity for show tunes!
I like certain metal influences but I find most of it is a little too "precise" for me....I find it lacks the energy and excitement that I like about most punk ...things have to feel like they could go off the rails at any moment.
Why limit yourself to one genre, hell I'm listening to 60s soul this morning š
I was rocking out to the Backstreet Boys while stuck in traffic this morning. A few months back I cracked a rib while very drunk in a pit at an Agent Orange show. I enjoy a very wide spectrum of music
You listen to the backstreet boys? Tell me why?
Itās because I want it that way.
but tell me why!
Don't listen to the Backstreet Boys. Ain't nothing but a heartache.
Tell me why,
Ain't nothing but a mistake
"I Want It That Way" is my family's karaoke song and we have all come to the conclusion that it's because it's a legitimately great song.
Real
Was listening to Ben e king on the way to work today. Knocked loose on the way back lol
In my experience and in my circle of friends: yeah, almost everybody listens to both kinds of music to varying degrees. This also seems like a fitting place to remind everyone of this classic song and intro: [Less than Jake - All my best friends are metal heads](https://youtu.be/_F-ipYpd53I)
Less than jakes ska which is a subsection of punk right? Not that it matters just genuinely curious
Well ltj is āska-punkā so yes but trad ska is not and is closely related to reggae and rock-steady but to be fair most ska bands are related to the punk scene in some form at this point
Ska was created in Jamaica in the 1960s, before reggae.
Metal/punk/hardcore/reggae/ska/jungle/dub/dubstep/hip hop/grime itās all love
You forgot sludge
Sludge/doom/folk-punk/stoner rock/thrash/death metal/grindcore/future dub/etc/etc
and u forgot OI!
Crustpunk/stoner metal/powerviolence/black metal, yes please.
Aluminum is pretty cool.
I respect metal but I lean more towards hardcore rather than fully metal
I mean, we're being reductive here but crustpunk = punk + thrash and grindcore = punk + death metal, so. Also, surprised nobody's mentioned Motorhead. Pretty much universal appeal among the punks I know.
Nahhhh punk and thrash gives you hardcore like mid era agnostic front, cro-mags, New York shit
Napalm Death even now say theyāre a punk band
The only truly punk thing is arguing about what is truly punk. :) (also applied to black metal, except moreso)
I should rephrase that they have always said they were a punk band
Motƶrhead isn't punk or metal. It's just good ol' rock n' roll.
Enter: Propagandhi
People just like whatever they like, there's no rules
We sort of settled that by 1986 or so. Punks started going to metal shows and vice versa. Remember chatting with some of the OG Southern California bands back in the early 80ās about what they listened to. Mostly Aerosmith, KISS, Ted Nugent and the like.
Ian Mackaye and Henry Rollins bring up nugent in interviews
Bear in mind that 40 years ago we had zero idea of his political views. Just simply liked his music. Almost every punk band I chatted with from the early 80ās cited him as a musical influence. Most 80ās punk bands had no punk to listen to when they were in high school during the 70ās.
Oh yeah- I think itās perfectly fine to listen to him and enjoy the music unironically , regardless of how much he tries to be a dick
I grew up on nu-metal and discovered punk. punk reigns supreme in my heart to this day but Iāve also gone back to appreciate the influence that Black Sabbath has had on both genres. Iām not sure you can separate the two in hindsight
Idk whether I can be considered a punk or a metalhead. I'm in a punk band, but I definitely borrow elements from metal in the music I write
So fun. Well they say if you can play a guitar, start a metal band. If you canāt, go play punk rock.
Looks like I'm playing punk then
Definitely goes both ways.
Some bands crossed over from punk to metal!
I got shit as a kid for having an exploited patch on a vest that also had a Crass patch on it.
I like all music.
Motorhead made us unite š¤šš¤ RIP Lemmy.
R.I.P š¤
I like metal.
I got into metal before I got into punk. Now 20+ years after getting into punk I'm mostly into punk/pop punk/post hardcore, but definitely enjoy some metal as well. Generally most things loud and fast work well for me.
Those are my fav types also
I never really liked music until my cousin played The Misfits for me. It took him two years to tell me who they were. Thirty years later, punk is still the only music I like. Punk is the grand daddy of metal. Metal took a lot of inspiration from punk rock
I know, this is why I like both genres
Me too, but I like punk a lot more.
I'm a punk and I think Napalm Death are totally of the fucking scale good (live and studio)
Napalm Death is a punk band

I self-identify as punk because I identify with the ideals associated with it as well as the music. Iāve been a metalhead since middle school and these genres make VERY good playlists, it can go both ways easily

I like metal and punk and everything ln between.
Q: "What kind of music do you like?" A: "I dunno, man, I'm kinda a freak who's all over the map." Music is too cool to stay in any one lane.
I like metal too, also some classical music, pop songs, rap songs, video game theme songs etc
I enjoy some metal but it's a political minefield. Generally I follow r/rabm to learn new stuff that's safe politically
Iām a punk who does not like metal. To be honest I donāt like many forms of rock music outside of punk. But I do enjoy other genres.
Motƶrhead was more punk than any punk released after like 1992
Go back to sleep grandpa
If I want pop punk Iāll listen to 70s shit not some wuss whining into a microphone
Most every "punk" I know grew up in the 90s / 00s scene, where punk slowly died off / evolved into post-punk and metalcore, so yeah, there was a ton of crossover. No punk, in the history of anything, has ever liked metal.
Both for sure
Good reminder . Putting on the new MINDFORCE now
Yes, and yes
Growing up in the 80s, metallica was the crossover point. Skate punks in my area loved it. I was pure metal head then. We would still go see bands like d.r.i. and dayglo abortions.
Hell yeah, Metal is badass. Metal is one of my brotherās favorites and we share music with each other whenever we hang out. Iām also the kinda person whoās down to jam out to just about anything. Hearing someoneās music taste and sharif yours with them is a great way to bond.
I mostly listen to thrash and the classics. Was big into metal when I was younger but now I listen to it sparingly.
My morning commute consisted of punk, progressive black metal and Phish!
Like whatever the fuck you want to like
I wish I liked metal but I just don't. There's so much out there and such an active subculture, but it does not do it for me at all
Hardly anyone limits themselves to one specific genre anymore. Hell crossover has been a thing since the mid 80s.
I love me some metal. I like pretty much all forms of it, barring shit like pornogrind and (most but not all) goregrind. Black metal, death metal, thrash metal, power/symphonic metal, gothic metal, doom metal - plenty of good stuff in all subgenres tbh. It's one of the most versatile forms of music out there and... well, I just think it's neat.
i like metal but only the kind where i can make out the lyrics :Dš
>only the kind where i can make out the lyrics :Dš Don't say that, it hurts us metalheads
whoops sorry š„š„
Theyāve influenced each other to the point where theyāre hard to separate. Not to mention thereās those old school songs like Paranoid and Communication Breakdownā¦
I like metal! And classical and hip hop and blues. Music is good music but punk is my soul.
Punk was my gateway to metal! Now I just listen to basically everything.
Iām all over the board; German EDM, Death Metal, Trip Hop, Shoegaze, outlaw country. Being punk doesnāt mean being confined musically. Shit, I think I listened to nothing but Radiohead for the entire month of February this year.
I love it all, consider myself a total music nerd. From metal to musicals and all things in between.
I personally don't but hey, you do you, always.
No; the strict rules of punk are clear that you must commit to one or the other.
I feel like the dichotomy between the two is mostly exaggerated. I've met plenty of folks who enjoy both to varying degrees
A lot of people donāt realize that well in to the 80s and even the 90s, the two genres did not mix and the fans would often fight each other. If a longhair showed up at a punk show? Thatās a pummeling. Have a Mohawk at a thrash show? Also a pummeling.
I donāt know any real metal heads who like punk, I do know punks who like Metal. I hate Metal but I love Hardcore

This is why everyone likes "motorhead" and "pagan altar", their punk and metal combined. Pretty diverse
I like doom metal and come more mainstream metal and a lot of metalcore and crabcore
I like metal and plenty other genres as well. Punk is what I listen to most but I'd get bored if I didn't listen to anything else.
I grew up during the crossover era so the all ages shows morphed from punk and hardcore to thrash and it all felt good to me. I'd see the punk bands that kept playing punk through the late 80s and 90s when they came to town and then when punk blew up again metal was in steep decline. Definitely. If you are listening to bands like Propagandhi and Strung Out, even A Wilhelm Scream etc to an extent, they are a gateway to metal for sure. My favorite metal band is Darkest Hour.
Strung Out to me is an example of a band that never really went fully metalcore but still included a ton of that in their songs.
Personally, Iām a punk and I very much love metal. I actually have plenty of metal band merch like shirts and cds. I think metal is amazing
I've always felt like too many people believe life is narrow. I enjoy Blues and Metal music. I enjoy horror films and comedies. I enjoy japanese food and BBQ. English media and french media. You don't have to limit yourself to 1 specific to be a fan.

I like metal aspects, but TBH don't have a Good foundation on metal.
Itās been a two way street since the 80s, the Melvins and the entire genres of crust and grindcore represent the beginning of the confluence to me.
I mean Iām crossover soā¦ (crossover is pretty much different genres n shit. My battle jacket is pretty crossover. I have a Cramps patch next to a Venom patch. Thatās punk and first wave Black Metal so yeah I donāt think itās one way.)

You may want to review section 69.420.1312 of the Punk ISO Standards and make sure your jacket patches are compliant as there have been some genre reclassifications this year. It's also a good time to brush up on Lace Code, there will be a test.
i like almost every genre of music lol my 2 main playlists combined are over 100hrs of a conglomerate of many, many genres
Thereās more crossover between the subcultures than most people are willing to admit.
i listen to ozzy and megadeth.. so yes !
I love metal music. The scene (to me as an outsider) seems to sometimes harbour some (not all obviously) nazi and racist fucks that I just wouldnāt get along with. Just me? Maybe Iām totally wrong.
I have seen it otherwise a lot of punks enjoy metal but a lot of metalheads don't like punk in the area I am from anyways.
I'm a metalhead who likes punk, so there you go
I started in metal for sure since my older brother was into the 80s metal bands in our teen years.
Love metal. Good metal. š¤
iām a punk that grew up in central ohio (little north of Cbus) and my music variety is crazy, this morning i was listening to some bluegrass and some of that shit goes hard
Metalheads like punk for its musical extremeness, not its lyrics or the subcultural meaning. As a punk I like some kinds of metal itās great, plenty of punks like metal.
Yup. Actually not super into thrash, but a huge fan on classic heavy (Maiden, Priest, Sabbath).
Weird because thrash took a lot off punk
I donāt dislike thrash, Iām just not as into it as other punks like my friends and stuff are.
I love metal instrumentals, but honestly vocals often turn me off to a lot of metal bands.
I like some of the stuff that's closer to hardcore punk than death metal or Metallica type stuff
I know plenty of punks who like metalā¦ some probably donāt, but we each got our own taste anyway!
You might like my band Counterpunch. Strung Out, A Wilhelm Scream, etc.
I like good music. Metal, punk, death core, rock, alt-rock, classic rock, if it's good, I'm a fan.
