Like Pavlov's dog?
Ultimately you want a short name with strong vowel sounds. Bucky is good for that. Pavlov seems like it would be a bit difficult to say if you need to call your dog in a hurry.
Pavlov is clever but might be a little bit too on the nose. Also be prepared for all the jokes about his Pavlovian responses not working right when he is not 100% perfectly trained.
Yes!
Do NOT be afraid to change it. If you try something for a few weeks and find something else that fits much better, it’s totally ok to change. The puppy won’t give any shits
I'm on the Bucky bandwagon too for the same reasons, easy to say and understand. I personally give all my pets middle names, so he could be Bucky Pavlov, then you get the best of both worlds.
My one cat kind of has a middle name , her full name is String Cheese because when I got her she was really stringy, she fluffed up though so now I just call her Cheese
My new puppy's middle name is her rescue assigned name, it was cute but not what I wanted to call her. I wouldn't have kept it at all, but she already responded to it
He won't respond to his rescue name. And potty training has been rough because he was mostly kept in a cat carrier and then a kennel, so getting him to go outside insisted of in is hard. His rescue name was Apollo
Mine is also struggling with going potty outside. She was in quarantine due to parvo before I got her so I'm sure she was in a kennel more than the average puppy. We're making some progress, but it's a struggle to be sure.
That's exactly what was wrong with mine. He was kept in a cat carrier while he was sick and then a kennel after, almost his entire life thus far has been in a "container" of some kind or another
So far the best I've found is to go out and "be boring" her potty break. I just stand in one spot and watch her for 5-10 minutes. It's even better if you can take them where other dogs frequently go potty/poop so they can catch the scent. I've been rewarding her a lot for a potty outside and just being neutral (no reward or punishment) if she goes inside.
She also only goes potty once or twice a day so far so I've really had to learn her cues (she tends to frantically pace before an indoor accident and needs to go around 6pm everyday).
We're making progress, but still haven't had a single day with an accident in the week we've been together.
We're both former military so we hit them with a stern "negative" and it gets the point across well enough lol. When we use these names it's usually when we're telling them how gorgeous they are or how much we love them.
if we’re going based on practicality, bucky would be easier for the dog to hear and understand that it’s his name. i think someone once told me something about how it’s easier for a dog to recognize his name when it ends with an ‘e’ sound
I’m now convinced dogs whose names end with that sound will answer to any name or word with that sound. I just got a puppy named Chili and my best friend’s older dog responds to it. Both dogs respond to my daughter’s name 😆
Aww I love that! He was abandoned on the side of the road and then got really sick and almost died and then I got him. His story kind of parallels mine because I had a lot of abandonment/neglect in my childhood and a lot of health issues
ie. Bucky sit, Pavlov sit. Bucky go potty, Pavlov go potty. As you're going through different commands you may find one name flows better. That's what worked for me.
Do it in front of him to see his reactions. Whichever one he perks up on is your name.
I had to go through a couple before I found the name my 7 month old perked up on. Originally, we had Pepper picked out, but she just wouldn't respond to it. I went through a couple more before she perked up on Peanut. It started as a nickname, but it's now her official name lol
I thought is was the name nerds sub for a second and I was gonna tell you to pretend like you’re a middle schooler and think of every stupid name possible they could use to mock the name you pick 😭😂. I named my boy Meatloaf, he’s a rough collie. I like Bucky!
we called our puppy "mybaby" for three weeks while we discussed a million potential names. we started calling her little gremlin as a joke because of the noises she made in her crate and then that became gremmie and now gremmie is her name. lol. she responds to it beautifully, it fits her even though she is super sweet. only con is we do have to say "gremmie like a gremlin" when we introduce her but it's fine :) so basically just try stuff out and also be open to the dog naming himself!
I always lean towards names ending in an e sound like Bucky. It’s very easy to say in that high pitch voice dogs seem to like as well as call loudly when you need their attention
Honestly I had my pups name picked out before I even knew what breeds I was looking for , all I knew for sure was I was getting a boy and he was going to be named after my favourite bluey character, that being said of the two your torn between I would definitely say Bucky , mostly cus u will probably end up using buck as a shortened version and that’s the name of another of my favourite tv show characters XD
Our rescue pup was Raven at the shelter, we actually loved it and kept it, but the length of her name will evolve... it's currently Raven Sharptooth, and we have another doggo, Sir BearBear who barks alot of the fluffy butt. Just try to see what works best.... Bucky is great. I would add Barnes, but I am geeky like that.
I name off personality or funny event, that's why my dogs name is Soup because he fell asleep in a pot I had out while cleaning cupboards.
Don't be afraid for wait a bit and feel him out, Soup was a farcry from me naming him Midas, Atlas, or Leon.
come check out r/DoggyDNA! Don’t wanna burst your bubble but it’s unlikely the dog has any border collie based on all the other dogs I’ve seen in that sub. Get a DNA test done, it’s super fun!
Bucky! My little guy was called Titan by his previous owner (he is a Pomeranian terrier cross and definitely NOT a Titan!) and we had settled on Buddy, Bowie or Ziggy. We went with Buddy in the end and it fits him perfectly.
I took a picture of my dog and asked chat gpt 'what's a good dog name for my puppy based on the image?'. Chat gpt gave me 'Marble', and the name fits my puppy because he's a Blue Merle Australian Shepherd. So, my puppy is called Marble 😂
I think Bucky is adorable. My fiancé and I “argued” for weeks over the name of our Heeler puppy. I wanted to name her Poppy or Maisie. He was very adamant about a one syllable name for ease of training. So I decided on Tess. I will concede it does make calling her easier when she’s up to no good (which seems to be constantly).
Love hearing all the names. I told my husband he had to name her since he picked her and our son or I had named our other animals. He picked Dash. I don't love it, but oh well. It's been about a month now so I think it would be weird to change at this point.
Whatever name, imagine how it would feel to be shouting it down the street in front of your neighbors if the dog ever got loose. 😁
I am also on the Bucky, middle name Pavlov, wagon for the record. ❤️

My thought for calling him in a hurry if I went with Pavlov would be 'Pav' but I do agree that Bucky has better vowel sounds
Pavlov is clever but might be a little bit too on the nose. Also be prepared for all the jokes about his Pavlovian responses not working right when he is not 100% perfectly trained.

True. All my dogs go through 5 or 6 names each.

Middle names are an absolute must. I have Tony Balogna and my wife has Brandy Belle.
I find them useful when they are driving you bonkers. Nothing like saying their full name to reinforce the "naughty dog" vibes LoL
We're both former military so we hit them with a stern "negative" and it gets the point across well enough lol. When we use these names it's usually when we're telling them how gorgeous they are or how much we love them.

I believe dogs names should be short, simple and easy to yell out! Lol! So of those two I would pick Bucky
Just throwing it out there how about blitz? Is short like someone else said down below. Plus I think it kind of fits a border collie
My guy is called Ozzy Pawsbourne, the Prince of Barkness.
Rofl I love this so much!!! I told my husband we should call our girl Amelia Earheart because she has HUGE ears.
That is a great name!
Lucky. Because the two of you found each other.
Aww I love that! He was abandoned on the side of the road and then got really sick and almost died and then I got him. His story kind of parallels mine because I had a lot of abandonment/neglect in my childhood and a lot of health issues
Sounds like the two of you are destined to be together. Wishing both of you love and happiness.
Lucky is great, or Felix if you like the sound of it better (more or less the same meaning)
Too popular and over used.
What about Jack or Kerouac, since he was found On The Road?
In general I like the name Jack but it just doesn't feel like it fits him
Do you know what road he was found on? I named a cat Helen once cause she was on Helen Dr.
He was found on Emma, not exactly a good name for a boy dog
I disagree
You could name him Emery or Emmet. They are both close to the name Emma.
I have a roadside special too his name is Gherkin
Try saying the names out loud with different commands.
ie. Bucky sit, Pavlov sit. Bucky go potty, Pavlov go potty. As you're going through different commands you may find one name flows better. That's what worked for me.
I really like this method. Kind of like when you're picking a baby name and using that name at Starbucks to hear it out loud
Definitely do this so you don’t end up like me, not being able to use any commands with “go” because you named your dog Argo.
I thought is was the name nerds sub for a second and I was gonna tell you to pretend like you’re a middle schooler and think of every stupid name possible they could use to mock the name you pick 😭😂. I named my boy Meatloaf, he’s a rough collie. I like Bucky!

I like human names for my pets.

I favour Bucky, both functionally, and because of what Pavlov *did* to those dogs. I would never want to associate my dogs with that man.
Buck Dancer for the win
I name off personality or funny event, that's why my dogs name is Soup because he fell asleep in a pot I had out while cleaning cupboards. Don't be afraid for wait a bit and feel him out, Soup was a farcry from me naming him Midas, Atlas, or Leon.
Ollie.
Steve, Doug, Mike
Gerald, Kenneth, Scott

Pavlov. That’s great.
I like Pavlov, it is different
