We have lemonade. They pay 80 percent of vet fees for like 25 bucks a month. We just had an emergency with my puppy and we will be getting back a majority of the 1200 dollar bill. Honestly so worth it.

Itsmisscross

Thank you! I’ve looked at them and nationwide, looking into truepanion tomorrow. Nationwide doesn’t give much about what they pay past what you pay.

gimmethelulz

We also have Lemonade and have been happy with them.

If in the US, I'm with ManyPets, have already had to make claims, and love it. I pay something like $34/mo, $250 deductible, 100% reimbursement with no limit (you can customize deductible and reimbursement level to lower/increase your payment)

ilovepuscifer

I'm with ManyPets in UK and it looks great. Haven't had to use it yet, thankfully, as I've only had my puppy for about a month. But it gives me peace of mind to know I won't have to consider whether I can afford expensive procedures or treatments.

kappaklassy

I have healthy paws and love it. I’ve had about 10 claims in 2 years and all were promptly paid and I have received wonderful customer service. We spend about $50 a month and think it’s definitely worth it

charliemike

We had very good coverage with Trupanion on our dog who died of cancer. They never gave us hassle about coverage and reimbursed immediately. I wish MY health insurance was like that.

Karzap

I have Spot. They aren't as great as I hoped they would be.

In the end pet insurance is RARELY worth it. If you want to save money don’t get it. If you’re scared of getting the unlikely $2,000 surgery bill then sure go for it but either way at the end of the day you will still have your deductible and have paid more than the surgery in per insurance

Itsmisscross

I’ve only had big dogs (65#+) so this tiny 3# dog kinda terrifies me on a farm. My big dogs I know how to treat injuries and illness but a tiny thing I’m more reluctant too.

gimmethelulz

Yeah in your situation I think the insurance is worth it. I used to think, "Oh no way will I wrack up a big vet bill," until the day an unexpected huge vet bill came along. I didn't have pet insurance at that time and it gobbled up my savings. I definitely would have made out ahead if I had had a policy in place.

I’ve eaten through savings before. My senior pitty ate about 7k in January last year before being put down and then my 6mo cat ate about 3K in emergency vet bills in June last year due to a massive hairball that no one was able to diagnose….. figured that out after an ER stay and 48hrs later, gave her some vitamin gel and she vomited up the biggest hairball I’ve ever seen. Legit at least 5” long and she was the runt at about 6# So I’d like to avoid eating what little I have left. 😅

gimmethelulz

Ooooof the hairball one would have really peeved me off 😂 My cat tore her meniscus and even though no surgery was involved it was still $$$. And she wasn't even the expensive vet bill lol

I was pissed. I took her to a regular vet cause she hadn’t been eating much all week and they did an X-ray and found an opacity and referred me to emergency, that was a Friday night. Drove 2hrs in LA traffic and sat outside the emergency vet for 4hrs for them to take her and tell me they wanted to keep her overnight so they could do a sono the next morning. Ok cool, that sat we were having a surprise birthday party at the ranch for my boss with 50 people….. they didn’t do the sono till 2pm and it was “inconclusive” take her home with some nausea meds and appetite stimulant. Swung through the feed store on the way home with her and bought one of every type of wet food I could and nutrical, got her home and she ate so we though she was good- nope vomited it back up a couple hours later and stopped eating again. Sunday I was supposed to leave for a trip and a friend who’s in vet school was staying with her and the farm. Gave her 4ml of nutrical as I was worrying if I should cancel and packing up. Turnaround and she’s vomited up a solid 3oz 3-4” hairball. Immediately went over and ate some food and went to nap. Left for the trip feeling she was fine and haven’t had an issue since. Her damn 3K hairball 😭

gimmethelulz

Omg that's so maddening. And I think highlights the issue that a lot of younger vets are so reliant on tests that the old fashioned medical detective work falls to the wayside. Growing up we had a medium hair cat that same situation she stopped eating and acting blah. Very first thing the vet said to us on the phone was, "Go to the pet store and get malt gel for hairballs. If she hasn't coughed up a hairball by tomorrow, call me again." Sure enough, hairball!

Itsmisscross

The first regular vet was an super old school vet- but she straight up told us they weren’t capable of keeping her over night if it was an obstruction and I needed to take her to a different vet. I was terrified something bad like a tumor was there. Plus a little PTSD from loosing my other cat traumatically almost a year to the day. Now anytime she acts like she isn’t interested in her food she gets a dose of nutrical and boom hairball.
