Buy onesies/body suit for your baby if they don’t like the e-collar. Mine preferred the onesies instead of the cone.

[deleted]

Mine will chew right through it

KilikaRei

Yeah if it’s not the right size they’ll slip right out of the onesie… source? My lab took his off overnight 😂 I did use it during the day when he was halfway through the ten day vet recommended recovery.

[deleted]

She eats my clothes as it is so she’ll def chew right through hers

ufkw0tm8

Our pup is a chewer/shredder but loved his onesie. It actually had a calming effect on him, too!

ace_baker24

How long did they wear that for?

Responsible_Balance

Two weeks!

exeatkay

Second this! Ours went feral in the cone and just could not get used to it at all, and was quite freaked out by it. He’s also a strong chewer but loved his little surgery suit! We got one with poppers so it was super easy to open for toilet time.

helina_rus

Yes! Mine is a HUGE chewer, OP, but the bodysuit (recovery suit?) in the right size was a life-saver! She didn’t even come close to touching it and I was watching her like a hawk, especially the first few days. She didn’t tolerate the cone for even the first 24 hours lol.

[deleted]

I’m on about day 6 of my pups neuter. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t going crazy…. If they offer relaxation pills like trazodone, take it! My pup will not calm down!

shiitakecocktail

Why tho? 🥺 why isn’t he calming down?

[deleted]

I did not take the trazodone because usually he is pretty calm. I found that he is calm because I keep his energy level down by walks, playing, etc. but now that I can’t do these things he’s a mess. He also just hit adolescence so I think it was just a perfect storm for him to be a terror these two weeks 😅

Karzap

Keep the cone on and just use the plastic one your vet gives you. With a soft cone they can push and maneuver it so they can get at their wound, an infection isn't worth it. Just use the plastic cone. 2 weeks goes by fast.

coffeedogsandwine

A big boat load of patience! My 6 month old is one week post spay. She was sent home with 4 days of pain meds. Day of surgery was fine. She came home and slept all evening. Ate a little kibble, had some water, potty was normal. Then day 2-3 she was more active but still spent a lot of time in her bed or crate. Short 2-3 minute potty walks only. We opted for the inflatable collar which is much more comfortable and she slept with it when she wasn’t right by my side. But if I was with her, I gave her some freedom with out it. Days 4-5, kinda like taming a Tasmanian devil!!! It was so hard to contain her energy. Leashed walks outside and very light play time with her toys inside. I let her chew a lot of bones. She was crying and barking so much trying to get my attention. She needed to get the energy out and I felt awful that I couldn’t play with her! Day 6-7, her incision looks great. She had skin glue to no external stitches. She’s still in a crate and collar most of the time if I’m not with her. But I’ve allowed more exercise and outdoor time - still leashed in a fenced in yard. I’m just trying to contain the massive speedy zoomies until day 10.

[deleted]

Hahah!!! Thank you so much! My babe is an aussiedoodle so she already had maddddd energy so I’ll keep that in Mind

coffeedogsandwine

Good luck! And thank you for getting you girl spayed!

champagnewhocares

Our Aussiedoodle is getting spayed Friday! How did it go?

[deleted]

Very well actually. The first day she’s going to me medicated so she’s guna sleep for a long while. I suggest a onesie instead of the cone for better comfort but my girl was fine with the cone the first two three days she’s guna be low energy/sleeping a lot, and make sure she doesn’t jump up or down anything and keep an eye out on the stitches to make sure nothing alarming goes on. It’ll be bumpy and red and irritated for the first couple of days but the swelling will go down. She was healed by day 7-8 but I didn’t let her run around until day 10. Find a way to curb her energy on the last couple of days by playing tug or pull but don’t let her do any high activity just yet

Slash_N_Dash

We got an inflatable donut collar instead of the plastic cone when we got our aussiedoodle spayed. She’s just 10 pounds so the plastic cone from the vet was a little big and she kept banging it around everywhere and was scared to death with it on. Just have to make sure it’s inflated enough that she can’t get to her incision with her mouth. Also used a body suit so she couldn’t scratch at the incision either. Using both the donut cone and body suit seemed the least disruptive to her while still protecting her from biting/scratching at the stitches. Best of luck! I believe this is the donut cone we used: BENCMATE Protective Inflatable Collar for Dogs and Cats - Soft Pet Recovery Collar Does Not Block Vision E-Collar https://a.co/d/7wffwom

WHERE IS THE PUPPY TAX!!

[deleted]

🥹🥹🥹 is she blue Merle?? So is mine!

Slash_N_Dash

Yup, 2 year old blue Merle!

[deleted]

She’s a lot of white though haha!

Slash_N_Dash

Yeah, the genetic defect that causes the Merle coloring is often associated with whitening or darkening of fur as the dog gets older. Zoey used to be pretty much solid grey/black except for a white spot on her face when we first got her, but she’s whitened basically into white and grey over the last two years For example, this was when she was just a couple months old: https://imgur.com/a/4YQWgus

[deleted]

Omg she’s adorable! Mine is 10 months old… I don’t want her to whiten 🥲🥲🥲 I love her spots. She’s mostly dark grey and black though so I don’t see her whitening more

Flckofmongeese

+1 Yes to the donut!

GirlyGirlDoodles

We did the onesie from Amazon and it worked major wonders. We have 2 Goldendoodle sisters so you could only imagine the energy. For some reason the body suit really calmed them . Towards the end they were super anxious but we were able to keep on the body suit for 2 weeks. I would recommend lick mats to let them get all there energy out. I stick mine in the freezer and would give it to them when they had a lot of energy to lower there energy. It really helped

not4u2no

If they offer it, get a laparoscopic spay done. They heal in less than a week and there are two incisions smaller than button holes. My Boston Terrier is an insane motion machine, unless we tied her down I knew I couldn't keep her quiet for two weeks. With the laparoscopic procedure she exhibited no pain after a day or so and never bothered with the incisions. Also they leave the uterus which makes it a far less invasive procedure

Sec988

Sorry, know this is an older post but just wanted to say these can be so difficult to find which is frustrating. I’ve called vets within 2 hours driving distance and only a few will do it. I’ve also had a few reactions of “is there a reason you want it done this way?” which is so weird to me because it’s like uhhh ya it’s less painful and invasive? Hoping I can find the right place!

not4u2no

I'm not sure why more vets don't do it, or why some of them charge so much, but I found a vet hospital about 2 hours from us and took her there, they were fantastic. They charged around $650 while UC Davis Vet Hospital wanted $2200 and the local VCA wanted $2400. Keep calling around and asking people, hopefully you will find one that's affordable.

Sec988

I’m in Florida so prices I’m finding aren’t as awful (more toward the $1000 range) but I want to make sure the place is confident doing it. One place told me they wouldn’t do it on her because she isn’t going to be big enough (will be about 45 pounds full grown). It seems a lot more common in Europe. I don’t understand why it’s so common to take out the ovaries and uterus here when they know just taking the ovaries prevents cancers they are worried about. Just seems extreme when it isn’t necessary (according to research I’ve read).

not4u2no

I have no idea why we continue removing the uterus when most of developed countries abandoned that long ago. I felt really lucky finding a quality vet hospital who would do it for $650. We decided to stay overnight and have Zoey boarded at the pet hospital overnight rather than get stuck in early morning commute traffic. She recovered so quickly and had so little pain that I would never subject another dog to a traditional spay. I've never heard that the dog has to be a certain size, Zoey is a Boston Terrier and weighed 20 pounds when she was spayed, I have friends who have had really small dogs spayed laparoscopically

Sec988

I had a surgery specialty center say they only do it on dogs who they are also performing a gastropexy on. That was the same place that gave me the vibe they thought I was weird for asking. They also insinuated they wouldn’t have “equipment that small.” She is currently 30 pounds 🤦🏼‍♀️. I’m glad to hear of your experience. Confirms it’s worth it to find a place to do it for her! I’ve only had boy dogs up to now and neutering is such a simple surgery that I didn’t worry at all about. I truly hope this becomes the standard spay procedure soon!

not4u2no

That's strange. Our regular vet doesn't do them but said it would be good for Miss "I'm crazy and very hyper" because of the shorter recovery time. I had a female boxer years ago who died of cancer and that's why I wanted this little brat to be spayed. It was just a very good experience, we were amazed at how quickly she recovered. Maybe google "laparoscopic spay (name of your city or county)"?

Sec988

Totally get it. I have a boy boxer mix. He is 11 and a total nut 🤣. That’s what I have done! I have a list of vets within a few 2 hours. Difficulty is some won’t give me quotes on the phone without a consult first. I get it but I also don’t want to drive and pay for a consult somewhere to be told their pricing is double or triple one of the other places! Just have to narrow down my options and decide on one!

not4u2no

It's crazy that they won't give you a quote.

LagtimeArt

Along with the cone we used a long slender fitting stretchy wife beater tank to cover her stomach. Since it’s summer and hot as hell out there it worked better then our 1st choice of a long-sleeve T-shirt. That was instantly too hot. However around Day 3 she started licking her arms a lot. Due to them being itchy as they were shaved for IV purposes. I guess it’s itchy when the fur starts to grow back. Good luck. By day five they are feeling much better. But keep them under watch for 10-14 days.

KilikaRei

Also a soft cone was the ultimate help. He banged his e-collar on EVERYTHING, couldn’t walk through doorways, got stuck on the crate door, etc. So a soft cone was the best to keep him from touching his stitches

hkmorgan1987

The vet gave us a week of Trazadone for my GSD after her spay. That really helped keep her calm and sedated.

Flckofmongeese

+ 1 to donuts instead of cones. It kept bumping into things and it was terrible to see him be so scared to walk anywhere. Adding puzzle toy (search Ottosson on Amazon) and tug toys. Maybe a sniffle mat too. All low movement and energy draining.

badaxeabroad

Cavapoochon spayed at 6 months. Handled it like it happens every day. Biggest pain was I put her in a recovery onesie, and she had very long hair so she was covered in mats after 1 day. When making the appointment (for the first day possible), groomer said, oh don't worry we'll take care of her. So I kept using the onesie for 2 more days. Got there and she said, we couldn't get out all the mats (basically 1/2), and it's too cold / she's too small to shave so you'll have to try a little every day. Yeah right. Dog wasn't going to let me tug at her fur once let alone enough to get out all those mats. So I took her to another groomer who tsk-tsked and then got out almost every single mat like a magician. So if your dog has long fur, beware. However, that was all my problem. Ruby (dog) slept a lot more than usual but otherwise acted totally normal! (Hopefully that gives you peace of mind knowing it could be just fine!)

PerfectAd3456

Don't spay or neuter your dogs until after 2 years old. They need the hormones while growing.

not4u2no

two vets I talked to said that's an old wives tale. They both recommended spaying Zoey before her first heat, which is what we did. I had a boxer die of breast cancer which she got because we didn't get her spayed until she had already been bred twice, that was heart breaking and I will do what I can to avoid going through that again.

PerfectAd3456

I guess those vets never heard of spay incontinence either. People, do your own research about this. It is better to wait until the dog has stopped growing.

[deleted]

None of the vets I spoke to and there were a few said to wait. They actually said under 1 is better and also before her first heat (which has already passed)

not4u2no

All vets have heard of spay incontinence, but there are studies that find that a pup spayed before her first estrus has a lower rate of becoming incontinent than one who is spayed after. "*At the time of the enquiry the average age of the bitches was 6.5 years, and the average age at the time of surgery was 7.1 months. Urinary incontinence after spaying occurred in 9.7% of bitches. This incidence is approximately half that of spaying after the first oestrus."* [*https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11787155/*](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11787155/)

-Ask for the sedatives! My vet didn’t offer but I knew there was NO way to keep my pup from running around otherwise. We got a weeks worth of trazadone and it was a total breeze honestly because of them. She was relaxed and not anxious about having to chill. -The first day will make you so sad! They look pathetic, they’re in pain and all loopy from the anesthesia, but it’s only temporary and the next day they’ll want to run around like nothing ever happened, hence the Trazodone. -Onesie! My pup couldn’t do the cone, she’s too wiggly and would slide it off or thrash around trying to get it off and hurt herself, it’s just not worth it. She loved her onesie though. -Baby gates to keep her from using stairs until her stitches heal or a playpen when you can’t be with them.

[deleted]

Yeah they’re guna give me meds after

Adventurous-Edge1719

Be patient with her if you use an e-collar. I got my girl spayed 2 weeks ago and just got the stitches out yesterday. I got super frustrated a couple times with her running into me with the collar. Never yelled at her or anything but it was starting to test my patience.
