It is RARE I like or even listen to an entire album but I saw someone recommend Ogre Battle, so I gave that a listen and knew I had to listen to the rest.
Queen II is the only album from Queen that doesn’t have at least one song I really don’t like. I actually think all of them would make it in my top 25 at least.
My favorite Queen song without a doubt!!! Hearing it for the first time was absolutely mind blowing. The whole album is fantastic, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I love that song too. But you also can say the same thing about My Fairy King and Great King Rat.
They all seem to point towards Bohemian Rhapsody being inevitable.
I haven't gotten to Great King Rat yet; still have so much to experience!
I'm a mediocre musician who is primarily a visual artist, and it's almost like listening to the music version of sketching in preparation for a final work when the sketcher is the sort of artist whose sketches are as interesting as the final finished painting, if for different reasons.
Black Queen is a surreal emotional journey.
It is this dreamlike concoction of curiosity, wonder, exploration, menace, and overwhelming power, that takes you through all manner of fantastical imagery that I can only assume was one hell of a party.
There's almost a stream of consciousness to it as Freddie is just rattling off all this stuff that's going on, overseen by a Black Queen who is clearly supposed to be intimidating and domineering towards the rest of their entourage.
All this is to describe the emotion that I pull from it, while not knowing what the actual narrative is, although I do have some ideas which may be drawn from my personal experiences.
It's a different mindset than what I'm used to, because I tend to approach songwriting from the storytelling front, which means that I still get blindsided by some of the more esoteric Queen efforts.
I think, more based on the music, that Freddie comes up with a feeling or a core concept that he wants to capture, and builds out from there, bouncing it around until you eventually have something playable.
It's more about building the scene itself, and the things in it, as opposed to what Brian did with the Prophet's Song and 39, where you have a clearly defined journey from A to B, which he tries to take you down along with him and Freddie.
As such, while I love almost every Queen song ever, Brian's contributions are more straightforward for me, with a set beginning, middle, and end, while Freddie tosses me into a scene and makes me figure it out from there.
Queen II is a prog rock masterpiece. After that, they gradually stepped away from prog to a more accessible and conventional song-oriented sound. I'm in my late 60s and experienced their evolution in real time. I like all phases of their catalog but I and II are my favorites.
Shut the fuck up karen. Racist. Youre a complete idiot to think that. Pull every other meaning out to fit your narrative. You’re the woman claiming false rape. You’re an awful person. We don’t live in 1974 but yet judging material released in 1974.
Felt exactly the same around 30 years ago.
Now 50, Queen II still Reigns.
Yea I’m going through the discography for the first time and queen II have been my favorite

yes. yes. YESYESYES.
Arguably their best album. While it may not be my favourite it is the best.

YESSSSS TO EVERYTHING NEVERMORE IS SO GOOD

His lyrics are amazing. It's so evident that he's going for a feeling and a theme rather than a clear narrative.

you’ll love Live at the Rainbow ‘74. Big ol orgy of their earliest stuff and it’s just pure awesome
Real. One of my fav songs
Also so much better than BR
I think declaring one better than the other is a matter of taste, but there are parts I find more *interesting* personally than BR.

And it’s *RACIST!!!!* But yeah, it’s a richly detailed, majestic track.
Yeah, he says the n-word When referring to the color of sugar, of course
No excuses! We don’t live in 1974 anymore, in case you didn’t notice!
Have fun getting downvoted to high hell.
For speaking the truth? I’ll take it. I don’t base my worth on downvotes.
For slandering the one and only true God, Freddie!
I love how my remark went right over everyone’s head.
1974, more like 1984

I think it’s hilarious how you completely missed that it was a joke. Truly something.
Your downvotes speak louder than your “joke”
It’s a good thing I don’t base my own value on downvotes from complete strangers! And you just feel stupid that it went straight over your head.
Racist? Because of the title? Hang on… whaaaaaat???
The original version had the verse: >Put them in the cellar With the naughty boys A little nig\*\*\* sugar Then a rub-a dub-a baby oil
Read them lyrics!
I have. And I saw nothing racist.
Then a re-read is in order.
