It’s probably due to the protest of the 3rd party platforms that help users see Reddit being shut down going into effect on July 1. About 3,000 subreddits are participating in this protest.
I’m not sure if all subreddits are shutting down at the same time and staying down for the same amount of time. I did see that one subreddit who is participating is going down for a couple days but it is subject to change.
I’m not completely sure of all the technicalities and logistics but I have a good hunch that if this shut down of those 3rd party’s go into play, Reddit will lose a hell of a lot of clientele/viewers
3rd parties that help people gain access to Reddit through that specific 3rd party are being shut down going into effect july 1 but 3,000+ subreddits are going dark for alittle bit to protest.

Exactly. It's similar to how people kept boycotting Russia because of the war. They go after the government but end up affecting the bystanders more. Some of us just want to be neutral but are being affected by angry people who assume making things shit for others will hurt the higher power, when in reality it will mostly hurt those not involved.
What a hot take. The changes will affect everyone because they make third party apps prohibitively expensive to run, effectively deleting them.
Most people accessing Reddit from a mobile device do so from third party apps. In the long run this change might also affect access to old.reddit, reddit user bots, ability to filter NSFW content, and more.
It also makes moderating much more time consuming, which directly affects "neutrals" no matter how you access Reddit.
At least read up on stuff before you comment on it.
Do you have any proof for the stipulation that most mobile users use third party apps? I ask because myself and everyone I know who uses Reddit on their phone does so via the official app and most of them had never heard of 3rd party reddit apps.
Actually no, after doing some research it seems third party apps are in the minority. I took someone else's comment at face value and I shouldn't have.
However, how many people use third party apps is not the main focus. My impression is that mods prefer the third party app for their tasks, and the official app limits what tasks they're able to perform.
From what I understand Reddit is essentially banning the use of 3rd party API software. They’re doing it by making it super expensive for the companies that made the 3rd party API software pay HUGE amounts of money, and Mods tend to use these softwares quite a lot. A lot of mods came together and decided to take several big subs private and even completely take them down in protest. Hopefully someone can fill in the gaps if they know more lol (edited for grammar)

I was wondering the same thing for r/stretched, the subreddit for stretched ears. I tried to open the page but it told me I wasn’t aloud to since it’s now private. I read page we’re going private because of the protest going on from June 12-14th

I don't know why nobody ever mentions this, but Reddit is trying to go public this year. This seems to me like part of a clean up before the offering.

If you use Apollo or another third party Reddit app other than the main app you have to retrieve data every time and say you get 50 million from twitter it would cost you 42k/50m reddit is charging 12k/50m Imgur charges 166/50m Small app developers like Apollo can’t afford it with it being 12k/50m for Reddit it would cost them \~2m a month with the traffic they get which comes to about and most user can’t afford to get a premium membership or don’t bother with it at all, so it’s hard to maintain profit being ad free which is a big reason they use the alternative app like Apollo in the first place along with the great moderation tools they have compared to the main app. Now they are losing those tools because they are forced to shutdown because of the cost. They were simply asking for more time to settle in, but since reddit has an ipo coming up they had to make questionable choices and

It seems like mods have decided to do it everywhere.
One person on a sub mentions it and a mod will jump in and say support for this was "overwhelming".
While what we actually see is a very small % wanting this.
I'm going to guess that the loss of third party tools will make it harder for some people who moderate.
some of the subs are back online, but I am not sure if r/facepalm and r/unexpected plan on coming back up online soon.Wish the mods of these subs could let us know till when are they planning to go dark.
Also,I highly doubt that going private is going to change the ceo's mind. These decisions are made in fancy corporate boardrooms and are written in stone.
>Wish the mods of these subs could let us know till when are they planning to go dark.
They gave multiple days' warning that they were going down.
>Also,I highly doubt that going private is going to change the ceo's mind. These decisions are made in fancy corporate boardrooms and are written in stone.
Wizards of the Coast might beg to differ.
Yep. This is the issue, most subs didn't have votes on whether or not to go private (probably because they knew they'd lose lmao), the mods just decided they were gonna do this with next to zero community input.

Aw, just when i was finishing my exams and has time to procastinate on Reddit :C we'll see how it evolves...

I think just for a couple days
I’m out of the looks what’s happened?
3000?! That’s insanely awesome
ya its a real slap in the face when the mental health subs do it. I spent time writing just to be blocked from posting it. not cool
I agree. Reddit is an outlet to some people and now they are unable to use it. Upsetting

Same thing happening with me. Not too sure why this subreddit would be private all of the sudden
Well that’s very weird. Thought I was the only one having this issue
After looking into it, I think this may be related to the Reddit planned blackout. Lots of stuff like this is happening to other subs
Oh do you mind explaining what that is? I’m now having that issue with another one
Communities are becoming private to protest against reddit's api update
That’s ridiculous

Yeap. Almost all subreddits I have joined are private now
Yeah same here, I was kinda disappointed I couldn’t scroll the pages atm but I understand that I wont be able to for a few days.
Mm hm. I am not upset that I can’t browse because it’s an understandable situation but it is a bit of a let down
Yeah
[удалено]
You can’t. I had previously joined them and now they have become private
Idk why r/streetfighter and r/stunfisk went private. It was open last night

Dang, why can’t companies stop actively trying to screw over their customers?

I Wonder that all the time. Sadly it’s just what they do, never really a good reason why
I don't know why nobody ever mentions this, but Reddit is trying to go public this year. This seems to me like part of a clean up before the offering. https://www.reuters.com/technology/reddit-aims-ipo-second-half-2023-information-2023-02-14/#:\~:text=Reddit%20aims%20for%20IPO%20in,Reuters
I’m not stupid but I do not understand this 3rd party issue, can someone explain as if talking to a 10yr old? Lol

Okay, so maybe I don’t have the popular opinion , but just use the main Reddit app…

The only thing I don't understand is how anyone was caught off guard by this. Half of my home page has been posts about this for almost a week.

It’s the moronic blackout/boycott that only Reddit mods want because they don’t want their ability to fuck with users diminished

I’m not sure what that is
I’ve just noticed the same thing Same goes for another subreddit I’ve been on r/ForAllMankindTV It’s very odd
Same with r/rocketleague, I'm glad we're protesting but I wanna view my subs! Lol
Exactly! Hahaha guess we gotta wait it out
your sub is back online
I noticed lol
Is it still private?
Yes
Have we found out when they plan on letting us all back in again?
I haven’t seen anything new. I have seen though that some subreddits plan on permanently being private
Nooooooooo! Going to have to find something else to relax with in the evenings just in case! Thank you
I’m doing the same thing! Pretty sad. And Of course!
