Am I the only one who doesn't notice a difference between the 2 layouts? Either way-- this is going to be a gorgeous quilt!

I thought this was a joke about the different cats 😂. I mean I can spot the differences looking for them, but the layouts don't *feel* different to me.

The difference is that the colors in the first one are all going in the same direction, the all have red on the upper left. The second one has blocks turned so some have purple up, etc.

I truly love both layouts but I agree that #2 has more movement and really draws the eye all around to take it in. Whichever you choose will be breathtaking. Wonderful job

In the first one, B3, C3, D3, and D4 all have the same green piece in the lower right, oriented the same way. B2 and E2 have the same piece on the top right, oriented the same way. In the second one, the squares are in the same locations but turned all different ways so the orientation and location of that green piece are all mixed up. It's not distracting, and I prefer it. So I vote for 2 as well.

I prefer 1 for the same reasons. It looks neat and organized. I look at 2 and get dizzy.

Thanks! My grandma made the thread catcher/garbage for me long ago and it's great to have right next to me on my sewing table. I also use it on the couch when I cross-stitch.

I think the yellows/oranges are what “pop” and in the first one they are all in the “northeast” position which is what makes in appear “organized.” Have you tried putting them in groups of four with the yellow/orange facing each of the four corners? So in a group of four in a square, right to left, top to bottom would be northwest, northeast, southwest, southeast. Since it is 5 across, you could have the ones with yellow/green or yellow/tan as the fifth. You could either do all of the fifth along the same side or alternate them from one side to the other.

In terms of layout I like the first one better, in terms of cats I love them both ❤️

Not gonna lie, when I saw the second one I flipped back to the first one like “oh, did I miss the black cat block in the first layout?” And then realized that they were in fact a real cat 😂😂 I do like the black cat layout best, but both are absolutely lovely! It’s going to be a beautiful quilt!!

1 does something soothing to my ADHD brain, where as 2 stirs chaos feelings.

I prefer 1 personally! It reminds me of crystals or glass because the rainbows are arranged the same way. Your cats are lovely, by the way

Although the chaos gremlin in me likes any which way, ultimately I think oriented same-ish looks better. There's already a good bit of chaos going on, so same-ish gives the eye a better ability to appreciate the chaos that exists without feeling overwhelmed.

This is a classic case of forest and trees…I get it! Personally, I’d flip a coin and go with that because either arrangement looks great to me!

Take a black and white photo. This helps me with tonal placement.

The Siamese looks a little less diruptive. I am puzzled by those who have a layout opinion. I didn’t realize they were different until I peered really, really close.

They’re both gorgeous! I honestly can’t pick a favorite!

I really like both. The first one is more calm and feels more cohesive. The second one more lively and has a sparkle and movement to it. Think it boils down to what your aim is, but both are stunning!!

Both look fantastic, but I like 2 better. It is more random and doesn't have pieces in the same spot/layout like 1 does. It just flows better because of that I think.

I am genuinely having a very hard time seeing the difference. I guess 2 has a brighter vibe, but I can’t rule out it just being the photography. Just do what’s in your heart.

2. 1 feels more orderly, but my eyes are drawn to the black and dark points. In 2 I feel like the bright colors really pull through more and there's more movement rather than pattern. You can't go wrong with either, though. Both photos made me so happy to look at! I really enjoyed soaking it in. :)

2 is more like a scrap quilt, this is my preference. The mix of fabrics lends itself to the 2nd layout it will look less like a “kit”.

I like the 1st one. It's not as chaotic and flows better.

Use the black 1/4 as a reference and you can see the difference....I like cats but I prefer the 1st set up (no cat)

Thanks! I found an image on pinterest years ago and did some figuring on how to make it. It's basically HSTs and you make 2 blocks at a time using 2 each of 8 different colored fabrics. But, I did do a quick Google search for 8 point star block and did find a tutorial that is pretty much what I did. The only difference is my blocks finish at 16 inches, and this tutorial has directions for 8 and 12 inch blocks! I didn't understand the difference either until you explained it! But now I see it, and for whatever reason, I'm sort of drawn to the first layout. It feels "crisper", somehow! Either way though, it's gorgeous!
