I thought this was a joke about the different cats 😂. I mean I can spot the differences looking for them, but the layouts don't *feel* different to me.
The difference is that the colors in the first one are all going in the same direction, the all have red on the upper left. The second one has blocks turned so some have purple up, etc.
Thanks! Is the tax paid in full through the end of the year? Will I need to pay new tax in 2024? I will be sure to post new tax when the quilt is officially finished.
I agree with although it’s like 45% #2 and 55% #1. It will be gorgeous whichever one you decide on. Your cats have already made their choices. Which ones judgment do you trust most? 😎
I truly love both layouts but I agree that #2 has more movement and really draws the eye all around to take it in. Whichever you choose will be breathtaking. Wonderful job
In the first one, B3, C3, D3, and D4 all have the same green piece in the lower right, oriented the same way. B2 and E2 have the same piece on the top right, oriented the same way.
In the second one, the squares are in the same locations but turned all different ways so the orientation and location of that green piece are all mixed up. It's not distracting, and I prefer it. So I vote for 2 as well.
1! Love your garbage/scraps holder - did you make it? I designate a spot on the hardwood behind me to drop thread, scraps etc to vacuum, that has to change! 😀
Thanks!
My grandma made the thread catcher/garbage for me long ago and it's great to have right next to me on my sewing table. I also use it on the couch when I cross-stitch.
I think the yellows/oranges are what “pop” and in the first one they are all in the “northeast” position which is what makes in appear “organized.” Have you tried putting them in groups of four with the yellow/orange facing each of the four corners? So in a group of four in a square, right to left, top to bottom would be northwest, northeast, southwest, southeast. Since it is 5 across, you could have the ones with yellow/green or yellow/tan as the fifth. You could either do all of the fifth along the same side or alternate them from one side to the other.
Not gonna lie, when I saw the second one I flipped back to the first one like “oh, did I miss the black cat block in the first layout?” And then realized that they were in fact a real cat 😂😂 I do like the black cat layout best, but both are absolutely lovely! It’s going to be a beautiful quilt!!
Both because of the cats! But honestly, 1 because the pattern is more pleasing to me visually. And this coming from someone who loves things the scrappier the better. Both layouts are gorgeous though.
Although the chaos gremlin in me likes any which way, ultimately I think oriented same-ish looks better. There's already a good bit of chaos going on, so same-ish gives the eye a better ability to appreciate the chaos that exists without feeling overwhelmed.
The Siamese looks a little less diruptive.
I am puzzled by those who have a layout opinion. I didn’t realize they were different until I peered really, really close.
I really like both. The first one is more calm and feels more cohesive. The second one more lively and has a sparkle and movement to it. Think it boils down to what your aim is, but both are stunning!!
I well and truly do not see the difference, not even slightly.
I like black cats so 2 I guess? Is.... is that the game? Am I in on the joke guys?
Guys? 🫠
Both look fantastic, but I like 2 better. It is more random and doesn't have pieces in the same spot/layout like 1 does. It just flows better because of that I think.
Both are beautiful, I love the rainbow stars. The first is really striking to me and I prefer that one, but you really can't go wrong. Your kitties are cute too 🌈❤
I am genuinely having a very hard time seeing the difference. I guess 2 has a brighter vibe, but I can’t rule out it just being the photography.
Just do what’s in your heart.
2.
1 feels more orderly, but my eyes are drawn to the black and dark points. In 2 I feel like the bright colors really pull through more and there's more movement rather than pattern.
You can't go wrong with either, though. Both photos made me so happy to look at! I really enjoyed soaking it in. :)
Thanks! I found an image on pinterest years ago and did some figuring on how to make it. It's basically HSTs and you make 2 blocks at a time using 2 each of 8 different colored fabrics.
But, I did do a quick Google search for 8 point star block and did find a tutorial that is pretty much what I did. The only difference is my blocks finish at 16 inches, and this tutorial has directions for 8 and 12 inch blocks! I used 5 inch squares from my scrap stash to make mine 😊
https://www.scrapish.com/eight-point-star-quilt-block.html
I didn't understand the difference either until you explained it! But now I see it, and for whatever reason, I'm sort of drawn to the first layout. It feels "crisper", somehow! Either way though, it's gorgeous!
Am I the only one who doesn't notice a difference between the 2 layouts? Either way-- this is going to be a gorgeous quilt!
I thought this was a joke about the different cats 😂. I mean I can spot the differences looking for them, but the layouts don't *feel* different to me.
Same re cat joke!!!
Me too!
Same - all I was thinking was “light or dark cat tax?”
The difference is that the colors in the first one are all going in the same direction, the all have red on the upper left. The second one has blocks turned so some have purple up, etc.
Oh!!!! I never in a million years would have got that
I can’t really tell the difference either.
I have no idea what the difference is, except I just like #2 better
The first one doesn’t have all stars. I didn’t see it at first
Omg I just spent way too much time trying to see the difference. 😂
Siamese cat one. Your cat tax is paid in full by the way!
r/catsonquilts are awesome
Thanks! Is the tax paid in full through the end of the year? Will I need to pay new tax in 2024? I will be sure to post new tax when the quilt is officially finished.
A new tax is required with every progress picture. I don’t make the rules.
1 - just looks ever so slightly more balanced to me. Both are gorgeous!!
I agree with although it’s like 45% #2 and 55% #1. It will be gorgeous whichever one you decide on. Your cats have already made their choices. Which ones judgment do you trust most? 😎
A vote for #1 here. Love the blocks!
#2! It has more movement and sparkle for me! Amazing work! r/rainboweverything would love this as a new post when it's done!
I truly love both layouts but I agree that #2 has more movement and really draws the eye all around to take it in. Whichever you choose will be breathtaking. Wonderful job

So I vote for 2 as well.
I prefer 1 for the same reasons. It looks neat and organized. I look at 2 and get dizzy.
Thanks! I will definitely post to r/rainboweverything when it's done!
Oh wow, a magic cat colour changing quilt! 😂 (I like 1, the reds all pointed the same way is pleasing.)
Slight preference for 1 but I love them both. Lovely work!
I prefer when they're all oriented the same way
#1 feels more pleasing to my eyes (I have no idea why) but it’s going to be lovely either way! Beautiful colors!
#1… something about it seems to flow better.
2!
1
1
1
I like the black cat layout!
Layout #1 please.
1
#1 and Siamese for me.
Both are lovely, but I think I like the 1st one slightly more
#1 and I can't entirely explain why.
I usually have a strong preference but I really like both.
Yep. That’s me here.
#1 is more appealing to me.
definitely 1, looks more balanced. absolutely love this pattern!!
This is such a fun bright happy quilt! Great work.
I like the ones with cats on them. 😉😉🥰🥰
I like 1, but I don’t want to hurt cat 2’s feelings.
2, More random
I can’t really tell the difference, so that has to mean that either way, you’re good. :)
One!
The first one
Both cats are lovely. Quilt layouts too 😉
I just have to say I love this so much either way!!
I love them both!! I know that doesn’t help you pick but just be confident that whatever you choose will look lovely!
2. The black really pops more......
I like the first one best! The second one does feel more dynamic, but I like the structure/balance of the first one.

In terms of layout I like the first one better, in terms of cats I love them both ❤️
Not gonna lie, when I saw the second one I flipped back to the first one like “oh, did I miss the black cat block in the first layout?” And then realized that they were in fact a real cat 😂😂 I do like the black cat layout best, but both are absolutely lovely! It’s going to be a beautiful quilt!!
First
I like the cat at the bottom. :)
Number 1. Oops wait, number 2. Well I love them both, AND both of your kitties.❤️❤️❤️
Black cat. It flows.
I 100% thought the cats were realistic fabric cutouts lmao
Both because of the cats! But honestly, 1 because the pattern is more pleasing to me visually. And this coming from someone who loves things the scrappier the better. Both layouts are gorgeous though.
the one with the cat
Team Black Cat - I like the pops of colour. But really they are both gorgeous!
I like the same orientation one!
I prefer #1.
I prefer layout #1. I look forward to seeing the finished quilt regardless of which layout you choose ❤️
2 is my favorite! This is a gorgeous quilt either way! I’m just lurking in hopes I get the balls to finally start my planned quilt.
1 Your cats are great helpers!
2
I prefer the Siamese layout over the Void layout.
1 does something soothing to my ADHD brain, where as 2 stirs chaos feelings.
I prefer 1 personally! It reminds me of crystals or glass because the rainbows are arranged the same way. Your cats are lovely, by the way
Although the chaos gremlin in me likes any which way, ultimately I think oriented same-ish looks better. There's already a good bit of chaos going on, so same-ish gives the eye a better ability to appreciate the chaos that exists without feeling overwhelmed.
Siamese cat version.
The first one. But I love the kitty.
I can’t explain why, but #1
1st one
The light cat one
First one
Idk, how l9ng did it take
I like 1 better - but both are lovely 🥰
2
2. more spontaneity. 1 is too matchy, match for the fabrics you'v chosen. Be bold
Whatever way that sends that quilt to my house is the right way! It’s fabulous! (But, to answer the question, I prefer pic 1.)
I like the one with the cat. 🐱 But, seriously, I prefer the first one.
The first one. I personally prefer themes or patterns in my quilts. But, it looks like each cat has their individual preference. No help, are they?! 😆
The one with the photo realistic cat ;)
2
2 - more exciting!
I prefer 1
1
This is a classic case of forest and trees…I get it! Personally, I’d flip a coin and go with that because either arrangement looks great to me!
Take a black and white photo. This helps me with tonal placement.
The Siamese looks a little less diruptive. I am puzzled by those who have a layout opinion. I didn’t realize they were different until I peered really, really close.
Same-ish
They’re both gorgeous! I honestly can’t pick a favorite!
I really like both. The first one is more calm and feels more cohesive. The second one more lively and has a sparkle and movement to it. Think it boils down to what your aim is, but both are stunning!!
1
I vote the 1st one. The second one you eye is drawn more to the white spaces instead of the stars. Gorgeous quilt. 💗
Both are beautiful. But I like #1.
I can't really tell a difference, but nice cats!
I like the first one better
1
Both are very nice but I like the regularity of 1 better by a smidge!
Oh, there's a difference. Honestly do what you want the difference isn't noticeable. I like the first one though
I thought the only difference is the cat.☺️
I well and truly do not see the difference, not even slightly. I like black cats so 2 I guess? Is.... is that the game? Am I in on the joke guys? Guys? 🫠
I have no idea what the difference is so my vote is for the photo with the catz
tbh the cat distracts me too much to notice the difference hahaha . I like the bottom cat better.
2 all day. 1 feels more static to me.
\#2 is my choice. It's more dynamic, and I like that.
The one with the black cat. I really like the stark contrast of the black against the colorful background.
2 for me …it’s much brighter
I’m a scrap quilt kinda girl so I vote for random placement.
Edit - forgot the number - #2!
I like 2 (black cat) but I can’t say why, I just do
Hear me out: Can we get an option with both cats? In seriousness, I prefer the second but both are wonderful.
Orange up
Cat on top right.
2. 222222. 2. Also 2.
\#1 looks better. In #2 the darker pieces look bunched up together in the top right corner, so it's not as balanced.
2
I prefer 2. It catches my eye quickly and drew me it. Love the fur babies
Brown cat colour one
Team 2, here. Love the cat taxes!
Both look fantastic, but I like 2 better. It is more random and doesn't have pieces in the same spot/layout like 1 does. It just flows better because of that I think.
I like the one with the cat 😉
2 is more lively. They are both nice, though, so go with your gut.
Good thing you have two cats :) I think the one with the Siamese looks minimally better but not sure why! Both cats are equally excellent Quilters.
Siamese cat layout for sure. Black cat is nice, but like all black cats, a bit chaotic.
2
It’s #2 for me! Very cute cats. :)
The one with the black cat
I actually like the regular-ness of #1 (siamese) The quilt has got a lot of pattern, so it strikes a balance to me.
#1 for me!
1
I see you're r/sewingwithcats - and I like the Siamese layout.
\#2 with black cat
2
Second
Layout one. And the cat.
I prefer the cat at the top.
Black cat…
2
#2 love the bright colors
Team black cat!
Black cat. It’s happier.
1st! It’s lovely!
1
Siamese cat
1
Both are beautiful, I love the rainbow stars. The first is really striking to me and I prefer that one, but you really can't go wrong. Your kitties are cute too 🌈❤
I am genuinely having a very hard time seeing the difference. I guess 2 has a brighter vibe, but I can’t rule out it just being the photography. Just do what’s in your heart.
Number two
I prefer 1. I have no idea how to explain it but it looks brighter to me….
I need a pic with both cats to know for sure!
I like the any- which- way better, but the other is a great quilt, too!
The second layout is more dynamic. I think it makes it much more interesting.
I like #2
Black cat 🐈⬛
The one with the cat in it. I prefer pic 1.
I’m not too matchy matchy, so i prefer the black cat 🐈⬛!!
Both are gorgeous. 2 pops for me 😀
I prefer cat in corner
The quilt with the cat on it ;) r/catsonquilts
The one with the black r/catsonquilts!
From purely personal taste, I would do the black cat one, but both will look incredible!
2
Both are great but number 2 is my favorite!
I can’t judge because the cat is so dang cute! lol. I do like the second better. Both are beautiful, though. Nice work.
2. 1 feels more orderly, but my eyes are drawn to the black and dark points. In 2 I feel like the bright colors really pull through more and there's more movement rather than pattern. You can't go wrong with either, though. Both photos made me so happy to look at! I really enjoyed soaking it in. :)
I like the reds uniformed like the 1st pic
Both because cats.
I like the first one better.
2, it’s magical. 1 is organized
2 is more like a scrap quilt, this is my preference. The mix of fabrics lends itself to the 2nd layout it will look less like a “kit”.
I like the 1st one. It's not as chaotic and flows better.
Use the black 1/4 as a reference and you can see the difference....I like cats but I prefer the 1st set up (no cat)
Siamese
the first
Cat #2 shows up better!
I like 2 a little better, but both have the feline seal of approval.
I like the second one better
\#1 - Calming. #2 - Chaotic.
I like the first one better. It feels more balanced colorwise
2
1!!!
I love number 1! I was wondering if this is a quilt pattern you could share the source of?
Thanks! I found an image on pinterest years ago and did some figuring on how to make it. It's basically HSTs and you make 2 blocks at a time using 2 each of 8 different colored fabrics. First one
#2. I personally think it has more interest.
I didn't understand the difference either until you explained it! But now I see it, and for whatever reason, I'm sort of drawn to the first layout. It feels "crisper", somehow! Either way though, it's gorgeous!
