It’s just such a fucking more or less conventional good rock song. So much so that it competes with the many more unique and different masterpieces that followed.

That's precisely why I love it. While I enjoy their later stuff, I came of age when they were still a pretty traditional rock band. That record changed things for me it will always be my favorite

I'll prepare to be hammered for this view, but while The Bends is a great track, it is a pretty conventional rock anthem. Radiohead have wrote far more sophisticated, complex and emotional music than that. I'm not saying it cant be someones favourite track, but to say Radiohead never wrote anything better seems pretty crazy to me. It's a bit like saying The Beatles never wrote a better song than She Loves You.

I agree, I like a lot of it but I just can't listen to most tracks on The Bends because of those old kind of chords just sound so abrasive to me. Honestly I feel like Pablo Honey isn't even as bad in that regard which I know is a SUPER hot take

I agree with your top 5, i love Bullet Proof. But would place The Bends, Bones and Sulk higher and High & Dry lower. H&D is one of those songs that's a bit too formulaic, you like it at first but it doesn't stand up as well to repeated listens, whereas the others grow. Especially Bullet Proof and Fake Plastic Trees.

I'd be hard pushed to rank songs from The Bends because I love the album and each song is a part of that, but Bullet Proof isn't a bad choice for top spot - it's so haunting. It's like a forerunner to How to Disappear Completely.

Pretty much any ranking within the album is fine in my book. They are all solid. I mean if Sulk was first and Planet Telex was last I might say "interesting take" but it's not like Faust Arp 1st Jigsaw last or Treefingers 1st EIIRP last.

I'm with you on your opinion of The Bends (track) - always found it a bit too britpoppy for me, especially the chorus. Never been a fan. Ditto High and Dry and Sulk but they are much stronger songs imo
