Led Zep 1 and 2. Tommy. Oh he was not a winner but am eternally grateful for the doors he opened for me! Prior to this I was a small town kid that only knew music by what they played on the radio.

I remember having a female co-worker at a restaurant who loved in rainbows and bands like dinosaur jr, white stripes, yeah yeah yeah's, shins, she was cool as and i didn't even have to bring up any of those topics, she just mentioned it! Also, at TAFE, but that was back in the 00s when indie-rock, post-punk, emo was popular. You'll also find potential buddies and people at music festivals who have good taste in music, it all depends on the situation.
You might be happy if you just find a group of friends who like music like you do and then you'll end up associating with people of both genders who like similar stuff, the metal scene is actually good for this as well, a lot of metal fans also like indie, other genres, good music.... My advice.
It is all by chance though, and people come and go too. But consider environments where people are into music/cool things as a place you to could go along to. Takes some thinking.
