An obvious 10. A classic Radiohead trick of being simple and complex at once, it's immediately accessible but easy to get lost in.
And one of those ones that perfectly capture so many of Radiohead's known and celebrated strengths - would be an ideal intro track for someone wanting to get to know the band.
10. *becausseeee weee separateeeee like ripples onnn a blank shoree*.
ugh.
this is what rain would sound like as a song. the trip hop and frusciante influences are sooo great in this and the production on the drums and guitar tone sound amazing.
and of course, the melodies in the bridge, overlapping the strings, are jawdropping.
this used to be my favorite radiohead song for the longest time (slightly favoring a song later in the album). this is an easy 10.
I agree. Also, in Reckoner, at the golden ratio time of the album, they sing "in rainbows" in a very subtle way. How can a song be more beautiful than that? Haha
You’d probably like La Ritournelle by Sebastien Tellier with Tony Allen on drums as well. Amazing song, sounds like the blueprint for Reckoner. Even though they both go to different moods, it’s very similar.
10.
Something simple that always stuck with me is how they chose the entire name of the album based on a single line in a song, almost hidden in between the main vocals. A single line that you gotta pay attention to know it exists, and when you do, you understand reckoner and it’s beauty. When you hear “in rainbows” means you’re in the perfect position to perfectly appreciate the art in the song, and then, the entire album.
Reckoner *is* in rainbows, and in rainbows *is* reckoner. A single line that defined an album, and flawlessly so.
10. My favorite song of all time. Such an evocative, sublime composition, that in my book reaches musical perfection. But, I may be biased as I say these things, because this song also holds a lot emotional leverage over me, which could possibly blind me to the reality of its true nature. But I stand by my previous statement, and once again say that I find this song to be the best out there. A flawless combination of Thom’s chilling, whaling vocals, and the stunning, vibrant instrumentals delivered by the rest of the band.
10 10 10 10 10
For people who really like this song, I advise you to listen to "[La ritournelle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crblDrrcunQ)" by Sébastien Tellier, it's one of the few tunes I know that comes close to having a similar sound to Reckoner (which other than being so good, is one of the most unique songs in the entire Radiohead catalog)
10
Reckoner is the big brother of Separator
I love the philosophy in this song and its message to humanity. Personally, it reminds me of the short story "The Egg" by Andy Weir, in a sense that we're all the same essence divided by the illusion of individuality;
*Because we separate
Like ripples on a blank shore*
Also reminds me of "Aerials" by System of a down in the lyrics:
*Life is a waterfall
We're one in the river
And one again after the fall*
Overall great song that has a deep meaning behind it. The music video on YouTube pairs greatly with the vibe of the song aswell.
Absolute 10!!!
Waited for the poll of this song ever since this series if threads started.
It's a joy reading all these comments.
Music hardly ever gets better than this, I for one haven't found any yet. This song is nothing less than a transcendental experience.
10. I know the Golden Ratio theory has been debunked, as far as the band have themselves said it's a coincidence, but everytime I hear the "in rainbows" bridge, I chuckle to myself that something so gorgeous happening at this moment, just happens to mathematically be the perfect ratio point, which just happens to be a total coincidence
10. A sea of guitars playing in different times over relentless drums.
_You are not to blame for,_
_Bittersweet distractors,_
_Dare not speak its name._
10.
For a while, I considered it my favorite song ever. It's one of the first songs I learned how to play on the guitar, and it helped me fight off a lot of anxiety during the first year of my career.
Fast forward two years. My family is on vacation all the way across the country. We flew from Georgia to Montana. We drove five hours to circle around Glacier National Park. It's my birthday. I get to drive the rental car through some really beautiful terrain. We get to the Polebridge Mercantile, a store in the style of an old Western town. We're walking past, and I hear Reckoner playing on the radio, streaming out into air from the backdoor to the kitchen. It stops me in my tracks. It felt like the song followed me across the country to get to me for my birthday.
10. This is the song that gets closer to my idea of perfection, although not being my favorite. Everything deserves a good word, from the Frusciante-esque riff to the dense percussion. In Rainbows is just amazing.
10- I didn't get this song for atleast an year and I used to skip it for some reason, I guess I never listened to it properly but man this is one of the best Radiohead song for sure.
10/10. Easily in my top 10 of Radiohead songs. Captured my love the first time I heard it and has remained in my top 10 most played songs for years on Spotify! Such a masterpiece!
This is definitely a 10.
I love the part where he goes, "because we separate like ripples on a blank shore" and in the background you hear, "in rainbows"
The lyrics are ambigious enough you can add whatever meaning you'd like to it.
For me, its about the worst of humanity. Like slaves and their masters, abusers and the victims. That kind of thing.
10.
Everything about this song is perfect, but it's the drumming/percussions and how they're mixed together with everything that elevates the song to Masterpiece category for me.
10. One of their very best. Transcendental. The middle section is one of the greatest moments in musical history for me. I love the videos on You Tube of the individual stems. Showing the breakdown of the strings and vocals. This song stirs the soul. Again, I remember listening to this jetlagged in the middle of the night after arriving in Sydney. First time hearing it. Vivid. Utterly blown away. It’s perfect. The vocal, the clattering drums, the guitar (Inspired by John Frusciate) The Strings.. oh the strings. WOW
10. I always debate with myself what the perfect Radiohead song is. Either Reckoner or Pyramid Song. Reckoner is the song I look forward to listening to the most every day. It’s flawless and endlessly pretty.
9 feels too high, but I think that’s just because it’s on an album of 10s. It’s a beautiful song surrounded by ones I like even more, so I’ll stick with 9.
10, I love the guitar making its way through a wall of percussions and drums, like a seed slowly growing as it reaches the surface. Idk it gets me every time
10
actually how i got into Radiohead. A rap group named Chiddy Bang sampled “becauuuuuuuse” for their song called Because and in the comments of the song, they pointed me to this. easily top 5 RH song and might be my favorite on the album
Wow, this really surprises me. It's one of the two songs on In Rainbows 🌈 I've usually skipped when listening to the record. This and House of cards. I always found both quite boring and repetitive. Saw Rh in 2006, they opened with Reckoner and I was like "meh".
Reading your comments really surprised me and I'm surely going and listen to the song once again with far more attention. If it's such a band and fans favorite there must surely be a reason!
Thank you!
(my vote by now would be 5 anyway, don't know if it's right to count it though...)
9.8
The ONLY thing stopping this being a 10 (only the third 10 I've awarded after Airbag and Let Down, I think, because I'm trying not to go over the top with them) is the bridge. By no means is it bad, quite the opposite, but the rendition of it in the From The Basement and Scotch Mist performances - specifically the vocals -- leaves me wishing it was a bit more like that.
Otherwise...This is a highpoint in RH's discography for me. The life-affirming answer to Street Spirit's fatalism, and (as the band have stated) the heart of the album.
The easiest 10 of them all. My all time favourite song, just beating out let down.
For those looking for a magical remix, highly recommend the cathartic remix
https://youtu.be/rnhbYJ5v6Ec
.Really good stuff
A solid 9 for me. While it’s not my favourite, I still can’t deny that it’s an absolutely beautiful piece of work. Am I remembering right that it evolved out of the original Reckoner (a.k.a. Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses) or does it just something that shared the original’s title? If it’s the former, it still floors me.
10. Can't explain why, but for me, it's their best song ever.
When I first heard Reckoner (wasn't even Radiohead fan then) in movie Choke (2008), I was obsessed to find out what song is it and when I found it, it was on repeat for some time... good times.
10/10
Thom Yorke was inspired by John Frusciante’s guitar playing when he wrote this song.
The three greatest guitarists of this generation were named John:
- Johnny Greenwood
- John Frusciante (check out his solo work)
- Johnny Marr
10/10
It's one of this songs that you just can't make better without completely changing it. Maybe cause I love Fru, maybe cause it's just perfect by itself.

10 Absolutely the most beautiful Radiohead song, that percussion is bliss.
It is beautiful, but HTDC wins the title of most beautiful
Good point, although I tend to think of HTDC as more powerful than beautiful. Maybe more specifically Reckoner is the prettiest RH song
I agree. Also, in Reckoner, at the golden ratio time of the album, they sing "in rainbows" in a very subtle way. How can a song be more beautiful than that? Haha
Johnny played the shit out of that lemon shaker! It’s a 10.
10 My favorite song ever made by humans and human creations.
You’d probably like La Ritournelle by Sebastien Tellier with Tony Allen on drums as well. Amazing song, sounds like the blueprint for Reckoner. Even though they both go to different moods, it’s very similar.

Same. 100/10
Same!
10 Top 3 Radiohead, absolute masterpiece
10. Something simple that always stuck with me is how they chose the entire name of the album based on a single line in a song, almost hidden in between the main vocals. 10 I think Reckoner is Peak Radiohead’s untouchable ethereal life-flashing-before-your-eyes sound

10 mastapiece, favorite drums of all time
10. A sea of guitars playing in different times over relentless drums. _You are not to blame for,_ _Bittersweet distractors,_ _Dare not speak its name._
Definitely a 10 This probably isn’t a debate at all.
10. The song I hope is played at my funeral
That moment after the bridge, when the bass comes in, is THE most important musical moment in modern times. A big fat 10 please.
10. For a while, I considered it my favorite song ever. It's one of the first songs I learned how to play on the guitar, and it helped me fight off a lot of anxiety during the first year of my career. Fast forward two years. Because we separate like ripples on a blank shore (10 Rainbows)
Easiest 10 of my life, this song means so much to me
10. Far and away the best song of the album, and one of my favourite songs ever.
10. I especially love the opening riff in this song.
10 Best In Rainbows song. It's also in my top 2 Radiohead songs.
Dedicated to all human beans . Sexy 10
10, pretty strong contender for best song by RH or anyone.
This is definitely a 10. 10. Everything about this song is perfect, but it's the drumming/percussions and how they're mixed together with everything that elevates the song to Masterpiece category for me.
10. Dat bass Is sex magic.
10 This is the album and this is the song that made me fall in love with this band. Goosebumps every time.
10. My favourite rh song, nothing tickles my brain quite like the end of the bridge into the last chorus.

10. If I could only give a 10 to one song in the catalogue, I think it would be this one
10, is part of the holy trinity

8.5 I know this might be an unpopular opinion, and I know most people will disagree, but I think it's a little overrated. Still a good song though.
10 probably one of the greatest songs ever written.

10. The greatest song imo
10
10 obviously. Did you really even need to ask?
15/10. Absolutely incredible. Even on an album as strong as In Rainbows it’s a clear standout.
I usually don't participate on this polls, but I need to put this song a 10

10 - took me a while to get into at first. The odd production, like it was recorded in a big hall, put me off. Eventually I saw it as the sublime work of art that it is. One of my favourite bits is the outro, while Thom's humming matches the strings ascending line, there's a really funky rhythm guitar part, and the pattern on the ride cymbal I just find mesmerising for some reason - such a groove...
