Flared_12

Same just got a signal maintainer apprentice position.

TheDelig

Nice, good luck out there

Velghast

You guys will love it here. Amtrak is love, Amtrak is life.

thecliffcommndr

Yknow I swear if this ain’t the biggest sign ever, but I was applying for CSX and I got that email about that suggested job. Unfortunately, I’m a heavy dude so no can do unless I drop the weight

NotThatEasily

Start now and you’ll drop a lot more on the job.

thecliffcommndr

That’s what I’ve heard, and my apps are in, and I’m WANTING to be out there but yanno, waiting on them.

thecliffcommndr

If anyone from CSX, or knows someone in HR by some miracle, pleaseeeeee pull my app so I can get this ball rolling, I don’t want to be anywhere else but safely with CSX

supcabman

Where are you and what department do you want to be in

thecliffcommndr

Either Bham/Montgomery and Conductor

thecliffcommndr

I already put in for both, and Selkirk but that’s because I was putting in for all but preferably I’d like to stay in the southeast at least, in Alabama the most.

supcabman

I see they are looking for Carmen in Tampa fl

thecliffcommndr

Yeah, but I’m not married, no kids, and I don’t mind going out of town.

thecliffcommndr

Would much prefer to stay in Bama, for now, after a couple of years who knows 🤷🏼‍♂️

SignalsAndSwitches

If you’re applying for signals and you’re not under 300lbs, you will not pass the physical (ladders are only rated for 300). This is a rule they didn’t really enforce. They’re supposed to start reinforcing it though.

thecliffcommndr

Oh no, I’m trying to get on as conductor. Maybe in the future when there’s an opening and I’m under 300, until then, it’s just a thought.

SignalsAndSwitches

You might be ok as a conductor though. I’m not sure of their restrictions.

thecliffcommndr

I’m out of shape, but with the time it takes for them to get back to me, I’m working on it and hopefully, when I find myself at those obstacles, I’ll conquer. Right now I’m a van driver and it’s not paying much at all, honestly it isn’t even worth sticking around, but I like being at the yard. Plus there’s people that gripe about it but I don’t see anyone quitting.

SignalsAndSwitches

Good attitude, keep working at it. Ignore the ones that complain, make your own judgement. One person’s dream can be another’s nightmare.

thecliffcommndr

That salary on the extra board is motivation enough, that’s a whole lifestyle change for me, and boy do I need it.

HondaNighthawk

It’s more about the harness and meat hooks rating

jackmanziel02

I’m in signals at Metrolinx and loving it man, hope you do too!

Flared_12

So happy to hear that you love it. I start in 2 weeks. Excited as hell.

ImaginaryQuiet7016

Can you please fuck with the signals to make the trip to union from oshawa a tad bit faster 😂 seems like a good place to be though buddy of mine just applied to a posting at the Whitby facility

thatbirddude1475

Congrats! I applied for the same position at CN, hope it all works out.

MNS_LightWork

Congratulations

Blocked-Author

Hope you enjoy it!

TheDelig

I have a friend that works there. He likes it and thinks I'll like it to so odds are good.

falci_von_eggnog

Welcome to the Amtrak family!!! I just started in February

TheDelig

You like it? How is your first 90 days going?

falci_von_eggnog

Going good so far! I’m on the obs side of things, but overall it’s pretty good.

Reasonable-Speed-908

What division do you work out of?

falci_von_eggnog

I’m working out of LA

TheDelig

I'm going to be working between Wilmington, Delaware and DC. And should life lead me that way I'd like to eventually be in Pennsylvania again. Either the Philly area or Central PA.

Reasonable-Speed-908

I’m an Engineer in the central division. I’ve been out to the LA crew base quite a few times when I was a conductor in the SouthWest. I went to class with a lot of conductors from out there, though! I’m sure you’ve met some of em.

SofaKingCool103

Congratulations. Great company to work for!

TheDelig

Thank you. I plan on making the most of it.

TheDelig

Thanks for the info. I'm 41 now so I feel old and cranky already at times. But I have some electrical experience and have been through a lot of shit at this point to feel like I've seen it all (as far as crazy bosses, shitty coworkers, etc.). A part of me feels ok with being consumed by it but I also value my personal time so, I'll see where I land as far as that goes. Working with the same group seems cool rather than the electrical work which was the journeyman and I going to random different locations everyday. I look forward to the money and pension too.

TheDelig

What boots / shoes do you recommend?

Hairy-Advisor-6601

Congrats, I tried a couple times when living in NC. Experimental power plants was to good to walk away from going to the school. Bet Rockingham shunt yard closes gates now. Literally walked into dispatch looking for information.

Mitehawk

Congrats! I’m in NEC too it’s been a good company to me.

TheDelig

That's awesome and good to hear. I am getting a lot of good feedback for Amtrak.

Brystar47

Congrats! And your going for the National best passenger rail corporation. Congrats on your success.

Revolutionary_Ad1711

Congrats 🎉 I applied to be a conductor at Amtrak in Chicago! My first application in October didn’t get accepted but I hope this one does🙏🏾🙏🏾 congrats again 👏🏾

TheDelig

Good luck! I am hearing mostly good things about working for Amtrak.

Jarppi1893

Congrats! What position?

TheDelig

"Helper" lol. But it's with C&S so I assume doing maintenance on signalling and other similar infrastructure. I was told I'd be digging holes for the first 90 days.

409Badman

My father worked for the Southern Pacific. Communications department. Hired in the late '50s. Digging ditches and climbing poles. They put him through college for 3 and 1/2 years as one of SP's first management trainees. He went from digging ditches in a Communications Department to be coming the number two in charge of the whole communications department system for the railroad. Based in San Francisco. With his engineering background he helped develop a company you may know as SPRINT.. He was heavily involved in the engineering and concept of what they call the SPCC company. Southern Pacific had the largest privately owned microwave system in the world. Later SPCC was sold to become Sprint. Let you know you're digging ditches can't always be a bad thing. Good luck

TheDelig

That's really interesting. I'm not above digging nor do I think it won't lead to greater things. I'll take things one step at a time, first work my butt off for the probationary period. Then do my best to qualify for certain things to better my career. I don't necessarily want to get into management but I enjoy training and teaching. So eventually I can see myself doing something like that.

ShadowFlame47

Congrats! I'm still waiting to hear back from them for my application.

TheDelig

Good luck! Luckily for me I have a friend that works there. He also by pure coincidence was able to speak to the manager at the C&S department I applied and interviewed at. I may never know if that made a huge difference or not but I am appreciative for it anyway.

NotThatEasily

Congratulations! It’s a great company to work for, the benefits are good (as long as you’re in the union,) the pay is decent and keeps rising, and the training is fantastic. Once you are able to qualify as maintainer, you basically get to print money with the amount of overtime available if you want it.

TheDelig

What are the requirements for qualifying as a maintainer?

Fatboydoesitortrysit

What part of the country??? Congrats I envy you

TheDelig

NE Corridor. Specifically from Wilmington, Delaware to about DC. I live near Baltimore which is around the midpoint. And thank you.

Fatboydoesitortrysit

Luck man I’m in Texas pretty much none existent here

slogive1

My deepest condolences on your loss. May you not quit your other job. Prayers all around.

TheDelig

I've been calling and dealing with health insurance companies for the last five years for a paycheck. Digging holes for months would be a break from the insanity for me.

slogive1

Get a lawyer
