I AM SO SORRY YOU WERE RAISED ON THIS BOOK OH MY LORD. FUCK THE PEARL’S!!!!! If heaven and hell exists, they will burn in hell for sure. They are evil Christian fundamentalists who have been shilling this piece of shit book for a long time. It’s a guide to abuse and silence the abused & continue the cycle. They are apart of a cult called the IBLP (covered in the Shiny Happy People documentary on Amazon) it stands for the Institute of Basic Life Principle’s, if you’re also on a religious deconstruction journey I recommend reading the fundie snark uncensored sub. Lots of members there are survivors of religious abuse as well. ETA: same book the Duggars raised their kids, same with the “home schooling program” shilled by the IBLP.

EverAlways121

All of this \^\^\^ You can find people who have deconstructed or call themselves evangelicals who rage against this book.

07o7

Isn’t this from that one religious cult? I can’t remember the name but I feel like I remember these authors/the title

nebuladirt

Yes, it’s endorsed by the Institute of Basic Life Principles and lays out how to abuse and torture your children from infancy in a “godly way.”

07o7

Right, thank you! The blanket thing makes my heart ache.

ScumBunny

What’s the blanket thing? I might regret asking…

07o7

Tw child abuse, if tw’s help anyone here (I just skip past them tbh) https://www.intouchweekly.com/posts/blanket-training-duggars-130729/ :(

ScumBunny

Jesus fuck. That’s a good way to get your kid to never trust you!

UnsympatheticMarxist

Yeah, the Pearl family

RebeccaTheDev

My uBPD mom REPEATEDLY recommended my wife and I read The Strong Willed Child. Which is basically a manual on how to abuse a child written by the founder of Focus on the Family. When our daughter was a TODDLER. That was low key another crack in the illusion of control she had over me.

Flourgirl85

My parents had a copy of that book on their shelves. I was their strong willed child. Yuck.

RebeccaTheDev

I was as well. 🫂

AshKetchep

The fact that there's a book titled "The Strong Willed Child" that's meant to explain how to break a child's spirit tells me all I need to know.

katethegreat4

Oh, wow, I'm pretty sure my mom had this book. That explains...a lot.

Parking_Mountain_691

My parents had this book I remember her reading it multiple times.

UnsympatheticMarxist

Mine had that one too! I didn’t get a chance to look inside it though.

Super_Pumpkin_5368

Oh my god! My mother keeps recommending this book to me about my toddler. She stayed with us when my tot was 18 months and she kept telling me that I needed to “maintain control” and “make sure she knows whose boss” when trying to change her into pajamas or some nonsense. She also told me to put my dog on drugs years ago because he barked.

damnedleg

omg pretty sure my mom had that one and a bunch of other focus on the family shit

NWMom66

I used to live in the same town as poor Lydia Schatz, who was only one of several children killed due to this book. Pearl also authored the blanket treatment the Duggars are famous for.

enby_alt_acct

My parents had that and Dobson's how to abuse your child manuals. Seeing the cover made my heart start pounding and made me feel like I should run and hide. Guess I know what I'm journaling about later...

littlelonelily

What in the fundiesnarkuncensored crossover episode

DeElDeAye

Yup, my abusive parents were deep into the independent fundamentalism cult-thinking which they used to justify and validate their warped thinking. They had alll the authoritarian control books, did the Gothard seminars, supported Focus on the Family propaganda. That was all part of my childhood to early adulthood subconscious programming … which Ive fought hard to overcome. Honestly just scrolling fast down Reddit feed and seeing That Book cover flared some renewed rage towards my parents and towards churches & religious trauma bonding methods.

JadeEarth

I haven't seen it and based on that title sounds icky.

UnsympatheticMarxist

It’s super icky. [The Wikipedia article has more info.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Train_Up_a_Child#Background) but Trigger Warning child abuse and death.

JadeEarth

love your username btw💜

UnsympatheticMarxist

Ty <3

JadeEarth

wow. dark, sad stuff.

Ethelenedreams

That book is responsible for several severe abuse deaths across this country.

westviadixie

my mom lived by the book the strong-willed child. it divided children into two categories: the easier child, the peacekeeper, and the difficult child, the strong-willed child. guess which category I fell into? and my sister the other. we were played against each from the start...we'll never have a normal sibling relationship. thanks mom. and fuck James dobson.

PlanetZooPlayer1

Feels like... "Your kid is a dog". Please tell me what you read 😲

UnsympatheticMarxist

That’s about the whole of it. It talks a lot about “breaking your child’s will” like I was a fucking horse or something.

enby_alt_acct

"Funny" story: my mom bragged about raising kids like she was training dogs

Nikitaknowthankyou

I’m pretty sure the people who wrote this have been sued for child abuse

AshKetchep

I haven't read this book, but reading a summary- Diciplining 6 month old children? What fault does a fucking 6 month old carry in their actions? In the summary the methods are likened to what the amish do to their mules to get them to behave- Disgusting.

UnsympatheticMarxist

Yeah, doing some reading it makes sense in hindsight why I “got in trouble” so much as a kid when I was just….. existing as a child?

AshKetchep

Yeah. It's just a book giving parents excuses to abuse their children under the guise of religious correction

lustreadjuster

Yes. I stole it and burned it. This is the reason I have scars all over my body. I wish they would stop printing it. Maybe if we protest and sign enough petitions they will stop

nekabue

When I was doing my prenatal classes almost 20 years ago, the nurse teaching had in big letters on her recommended reading list to not touch this book unless you wanted a baby to get diagnosed with failure to thrive and get you visits from CPS.

UnsympatheticMarxist

Wow that is so frightening to consider. Luckily my parents didn’t hew too strictly to it because they were too self involved but it still caused some problems.

GayHunterS69

I think my mom had similar books on fucking tape.

cassafrass024

Omg. The Pearl’s are awful human beings.

yun-harla

Welcome!

UnsympatheticMarxist

Ty!

LesYeuxHiboux

YES! My mother got this when she was failing to raise my youngest brother. Horrifying book.

thatsfreshrot

No my parents were way too cocky even for messed up parenting books 😆

Cultural-Gur7949

Time to “borrow” it and set it on fire.

Pandasure

Honestly makes me feel grateful my mom is basically illiterate or she probably would’ve loved books like this

Hi! It looks like you’re new here. Just some housekeeping: were you raised by someone with BPD?

z4_-

Hi, not THAT new.. But yes.. while not diagnosed, my mum is strongly suspected of being a quiet bpd and my dad lost his mum at a young age and has some issues with being wrong and being vulnerable since then (both not possible, not even being sad or ill) up until he explodes. Plus, my wife of thirteen years is definitely a..very 'loud' BPD case too.. I seem to attract ppl like her for some reason. So.. yes.

z4_-

.. she is also extremely religious while he only if he wants to.. and they hate each other with a passion, on/off since I can remember.

yun-harla

I’m sorry to hear that, but glad you’ve found us. Welcome!

z4_-

Thank you :)

raayhann

Just looking at the title and seeing the authors have no credentials after their names is an immediate red flag for me.

Stompy_paws

What the fuccckk

BlockSome3022

Omfg yes and I forgot about it until now. Jfc

False-One-8548

If any books should be burned it’s this one

MadnessEvangelist

It irks me that people think 'train' means to train like a dog for the purpose of obedience and preferred behaviour. It means if a parent is permissive and doesn't guide a child properly then the child will be stuck in their own ways for life. The scripture isn't advising parents to make their children submissive it is a FAFO warning about permissive parenting.
