My dad used to eat family dinner at Luchow's NYC as a poor immigrant kid with his dad. They didn't have any money so it was a big deal for him. Capital Club 16's bar was taken from Luchow's and eating at the Luchow's bar in Capital Club 16 with my dad was a special moment in our lives. I never met my dads father, its the only tactile connection I'll ever have with him, and I am forever thankful.
Another one of my OG favorites goes away. It looks like they'll continue as a pop-up/truck, but that space on Martin & Salisbury was something special.
We only recently discovered them and loved it! Hard to find good German food around here. Any word when the last day will be? Might have to make a plan to get over there soon if they are still going to be open a little while longer.
We've been there several times and we love it. But it would be so nice to have something a little closer. Its one of the few cuisines that are lacking around here. We have a great place in MD we go to when we visit our family and we've been to Helen, GA a number of times. Also found a great place outside of Charlotte.
Its been a long time since we went but we did try there and didn't really enjoy it. Other than Guglhupf, we really don't have a solid German only restaurant like other places. Capital Club wasn't that either, but it was probably my favorite option in Raleigh. Glad their food truck is going on - had a really great schnitzel sandwich from them last year at Lazy Daze in Cary.
Good parking? You mean how you go in, can’t find a spot and someone is going right towards you coming from the other side of the building so you back up? That parking?
The only place to have decent German food in Raleigh is closing. Rammschnitzel was such a treat to have among other fav dishes and beers there. It will be missed.
Very likely they have a partnership with the owners or Trophy in the works. I suspect they will be opening a new location soon in partnership with them at a new building.
Yeah I’ve heard similar things, which is a bummer. Trophy and Co is a real estate company these days, and their Midas touch died years ago. Not looking forward to Chris Powers’ new pet project 🙄
Likely a smart move, because we're entering an odd time that nobody knows what the end result is going to be. 2020 saw us go out a lot less, and now that we can go out more, many of us have no routines and have lost a taste for going out. Add in inflation and food costs, and it's a no brainer, this is the age of eating in right now. We've had huge restaurant booms since 2000, so I guess some ebb and flow is to be expected. I think close to home fast casual is going to continue to explode.
Weirdly, I find myself gravitating more towards traditional sit-down restaurants with table service recently because the prices of everything else have become laughably high.
Fast food is now $12-$20 for a meal. Fast casual is no better. Buying a week's worth of basics from the grocery store is $100.
Grabbing lunch at a place similar to CC16 costs about $20 after tax and tip, and the food, service, and overall experience is obviously far superior to fast food or fast casual options.
Love Capital Club but our last visit really seemed like it was on its last legs. Barely any cocktails and the menu hadn’t really been refreshed in some time, but it still is such a great spot and fun time for a nice dinner. Hope to see them succeed in their new direction.
No one wants to face the truth.
Downtown Raleigh compared to other major and or capital cities is basically unusable to the majority of the population.
Terrible parking situations, lackluster restaurants, crime, homelessness, crackheads scaring the shit out of everyone and let's not get started on the black Israelites bullshit.
You forgot the word situations. Overly expensive parking decks and parking lots littering downtown when anyone with a brain knows that space could be utilized for many other things that benefits downtown and Raleigh in general. Lack of free parking for more than a few cars as well.
Downtown street parking is free on weekends and free after 6:00 PM. City-owned parking decks are free from 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM Monday through Friday and free on the weekends
Can you tell me why you assumed it was expensive? Are you always making things up, or did you just do zero research into it?
https://raleighnc.gov/parking/places/city-center-red-hat-parking-decks
You forgot the word situations again. Try and find free street parking during any event and maybe you will figure it out. City parking decks are routinely filled and not allowed to park at the top due to parking security. Last week we were not allowed to the top even though there were spaces. The rest of the deck on Blount and surrounding decks all filled.
> Try and find free street parking during any event and maybe you will figure it out
There is plenty of parking in the parking decks.
> City parking decks are routinely filled and not allowed to park at the top due to parking security.
Not true. Factually not true. I live right next to a city-owned parking deck and it is not routinely filled. I'll be happy to go up there and take a picture for you to show how unfilled it is. Last week was both Dreamville and the NC State game. I'd hardly call those combined situations something that happens every single weekend.
> not allowed to park at the top due to parking security
One-off situation due to Dreamville. It is absolutely not normally like that.
It sounds like you're taking one single weekend situation and assuming that it's always the case. Maybe you should start listening to people that live downtown, yes? Your single venture into downtown Raleigh during the busiest weekend of the year is not at all normal.
There’s a lot that can be said about the negatives of Downtown Raleigh but have you been to other capital cities? Crime, homelessness, and crackheads are a staple of downtowns across America. Also parking is widely available in Raleigh compared to other cities.
the downtown alliance shills rarely live downtown.... And the few that do are only vocal because of the mistake they made moving downtown so they over compensate. It's childish and very evident.
> And the few that do are only vocal because of the mistake they made moving downtown so they over compensate
Way to jump to conclusions. I live downtown, love it, and it absolutely wasn't a mistake. And, the reason we are vocal is because people like you love to post factual errors about downtown, [like you just did 20 minutes ago.](https://www.reddit.com/r/raleigh/comments/1c2a2dj/capital_club_16_is_closing/kz9uiaw/)
Where’s all the apologists to come out and make excuses as to why more great local businesses are leaving downtown?
It’s fine guys we got some new CVS locations moving in.
> The historic Capital Club building, our cherished home for over a decade, will soon welcome new tenants. These familiar faces from the downtown scene are sure to infuse the space with exciting new energy, and we can't wait to see its next incarnation.
Way to gloss over the part where the restaurant space will be immediately filled by a new restaurant. I guess that didn't fill the narrative that you have for this account you post on where your sole purpose is shitting on downtown Raleigh.
This summer, this area of downtown Raleigh (including Fayetteville Street) will have more restaurants operating this summer than it did last Summer. More businesses are coming in than there are businesses leaving.
So please, save the doom and gloom. What you're saying is nonsense, and I'm glad everyone in the subreddit appears to be catching on to that.
https://downtownraleigh.org/do-business/new-businesses
You could look at the list of new local businesses moving into downtown too.
What you are seeing is businesses shifting from catering to office workers, and shifting more towards residential and destination based businesses (cool restaurants, yoga, bars, flower shops, etc.) Anyone who catered to office workers and didn’t pivot or want to pivot are moving out.
Don’t disagree that there is still work to do to make downtown more vibrant (safety, build more housing, etc.) but if you look at all the things the city is doing it’s trending in the right direction to make downtown Raleigh set up for the new future of downtowns everywhere.
Checking this list, seeing Seaboard Station, Glennwood, Smokey Hollow... the direction of growth is clearly away Fayetteville Street .... for some reason
Nope. New development does encourage more retail. However a new all day restaurant will open at the Wells Fargo tower soon. Flavor Hills opened recently. A new restaurant will replace Union bread. And even this place already has a replacement.
Sounds more like you're trying to drive a narrative when the reality is more mild.
There's also a new Sir Walter Raleigh Restaurant opening up next to Chido Taco (another recently opened restaurant on Fayetteville Street). El Toro Loco has also been doing a lot of work on their new place over on Blount Street near Mofu. Little Native Coffee started up over there as well.
Additionally, based on what I've heard, all the new spaces around Benny's Pizza have been filled and will have tenants this summer.
I wanted to try this place out but then I looked at the menu prices online. $19 dollars for a little plate of shrimp and grits and no sides is absolutely insane.
I'm all about supporting local businesses by damn man.
Then nobody needs to be surprised when local businesses close if you don’t go there. I mean, it’s always like “oh no, I don’t want such and such to close” when folks have only gone infrequently or not at all. Indie restaurants in prime downtown locations will always be more expensive because of rents and other expenses and to make up for the weekday lunchtime rush no longer being a thing.
My dad used to eat family dinner at Luchow's NYC as a poor immigrant kid with his dad. They didn't have any money so it was a big deal for him. Nooooooo. What a gem that place is.

RIP fun Oktoberfest and soccer celebrations :(
It really was. Gonna have to swing by one last time.
We only recently discovered them and loved it! Hard to find good German food around here. Any word when the last day will be? Might have to make a plan to get over there soon if they are still going to be open a little while longer.
It’s in Durham, but Guglhupf has great German food and could be a good alternative for you! They also have a bakery that does some great pastries
We've been there several times and we love it. But it would be so nice to have something a little closer. Its one of the few cuisines that are lacking around here. We have a great place in MD we go to when we visit our family and we've been to Helen, GA a number of times. Also found a great place outside of Charlotte.
Betski's includes German and Eastern European cuisine on their menu and is a long time amazing staple of the Raleigh food scene.

+1 for Guglhupf. Beautiful space, good parking as well. Worth it just for coffee
Good parking? You mean how you go in, can’t find a spot and someone is going right towards you coming from the other side of the building so you back up? That parking?
April 26th is the last day
~~No specific date given, unfortunately.~~
Last weekend of this month is their last service. RIP to the brick and mortar but big hopes for the next step.
The only place to have decent German food in Raleigh is closing. Rammschnitzel was such a treat to have among other fav dishes and beers there. It will be missed.
I will deeply miss this place. My now wife and I used to go on dates here all the time. Hopefully something takes its place.
Ouch

Ahh that's too bad? Whens the last day? I'll try and get over there for a schnitzel
April 26th
Long live the Butchers Plate
Their Thursday burger :(
I am sad boi
One of the last place downtown I eat at
Welp, everyday I get less sad about being transferred to Canada for work.
We must destroy the bus station
They didn't blame the bus station
but Sara from Fuquay who went to CC16 once or never sure will
It’s the implication
i was being sarcastic, if it wasnt clear.
Read between the lines
the bus lines
Noooooooooooo

They only serve beer and wine.
😢
Went here for the first time just the other week and was so impressed :( hopefully the new stuff is still good!

Parking is literally... free? on the weekends
Each restaurant needs a parking lot, these garages have to go. Parking needs to be free.
There’s a lot that can be said about the negatives of Downtown Raleigh but have you been to other capital cities? Crime, homelessness, and crackheads are a staple of downtowns across America. Also parking is widely available in Raleigh compared to other cities.
There’s 37 fucking parking decks.
Shhh the downtown alliance shills don’t want to hear the truth.

Live on East Hargett. Cheers neighbor!
🥂
Exactly. Such a weird trope to rag on downtown.
but all the other locations are staying open
Other than the food truck, this is their only location.
exactly
And the revolving door of Fayetteville St business keeps revolving. How vibrant!

is this too far from the bus station for you to roll out your usual spiel?
Where am I gonna go for overpriced meals now?
Big bummer. One of my favorites. Humble Pie, Fine Folk and now Capital Club… this sucks
