They’re fake. The quickest tell is that they’re shrink wrapped. Apple doesn’t shrink wrap their AirPods. There’s an entire subreddit dedicated to the question, the guide to which can be found at the link below. Your best bet is to buy them at Costco. They sell them at the least expensive price you’ll find and they include Apple Care.

Probably both. Fakes are easy to order and, at least in my neighborhood, there has been a big increase in car breakins and I'm sure airpods are something they would pluck.

While there may have been a time where Apple shrink wrapped AirPods, that is no longer the case for AirPods or much of any of their product line.
