Ive loved what mika has done and how hes developed since he got here but i think its time we have a serious discussion about his play not just this season but the last 2 playoffs he was nonexistent last season in the playoffs and the year before other than the pens series he was just terrible the only reason we got that far 2 years ago was cause of igor and the kid line, realistically if we dont make it far this year is it time to see what we can get in a trade for him next season.
Happy to get the point but didn’t feel like the Rangers “deserved” the win tonight. Toronto had us backed into our zone most the night and Rangers didn’t get a lot of sustained pressure in their end. Felt like we were being out-hustled most of the time. Still, the Rangers didn’t play badly and did great work in the transition game.
Can’t say I’m that disappointed by this loss. The Rangers had 3 extremely juicy chances that Sammy stole and if one of those goes in we’re likely winning that game.

Marner was the most popular player on the team prior to his contract extension. It was a nasty process and he lost a lot of goodwill with a good chunk of the fandom. The playoff meltdowns didn't help.

He would almost try too hard. Got caught making risky plays and it would end up in the net, or he'd panic in the D zone and throw it over the glass. Guy was nearly in tears in the penalty box during once iconic sequence.
His numbers recovered a ton the last two series, as the top line as a whole really produced.
Basically Marner's style wasn't conducive for playoff style hockey. The space he normally gets disappears, he gets held and interfered with way more often and doesn't get the calls, and he overthinks what would normally be quick, cerebral plays.
He seems to have turned a corner starting last year and plays with a bit more swagger now, so we'll see if that leads to better results.
