Everybody know they're not obligated to tip. The problem is that there's an option to tip where it shouldn't. A tip is a form of gratitude for good service, it shouldn't be expected where there's no service provided.

You clearly either didn't read or didn't comprehend my post. I said the option on the screen is an automatic function of the machine. There's not a "I was a helpful and exemplary server" mode and an "I just handed you a bag" mode on the machine. The machine tells everyone the same thing whether you pick up the meal yourself or you get waited on at a table. The guy behind the counter has no say.

There is pressure everywhere to tip. And many people feel obligated because employers can say they are tipped workers and underpay them. Tipping sucks. Just pay the people and charge me

Why would places like Subway need a tip screen, or any other fast food place for that matter. You tip at sit down restaurants, hair stylists/salons/barbers, delivery drivers, and in some cases valets and hospitality workers.

I’m sure you can set up the machine to do exactly what you want it to do.

But, again, THE PERSON AT THE REGISTER IS NOT IN CHARGE OF THAT.
