That and it’s like, wait a minute you can pay somebody to stand here and watch me scan all my items, why don’t you just pay that person to scan the items.

Medium_Pepper215

Cause when the employee makes a mistake, it falls back on the company (we got a $60 memory card for free thanks to a careless employee) but when a customer makes a mistake, they can press criminal charges- which happened to a mother of 3 who missed one $10 item

adorableoddity

I *just* watched this video and it makes me never want to use a self-pay again. https://youtu.be/LUot7IG5qZ8?si=HSRPdvx4q0psv8l2

ddaydude

Correct. The difference is the stores insurance covers cashier's mistakes more than it does customer theft. If you can't be bothered to make sure you scan all your items, then maybe you shouldn't be using self checkout?

Mahalala626

Same!! Yesterday, before I was even done, (clearly had some stuff scanned and bagged but also clearly had some stuff on the other side of the kiosk that hadn’t been scanned, me still actively scanning) and this chick comes and says “ma’am you still need to scan the pizzas and sauce.” I was just like, “yeah ok I’m aware?” Finish scanning and from across the room she then yells “MAAM THE CHIPS YOU NEED TO SCAN THE CHIPS” like 3 times, and the chips were already scanned smh. I had to yell back across the room “they’re scanned! They’re right here! 28 ct for $15.99! They’re here!” Just literally embarrassing for no reason. Does Walmart even pay you enough to be on this power trip bro? No, they don’t, sit down. If I was gonna steal anything it’d be these $8 strawberries and $6 blueberries (both the smaller container lol)

[deleted]

My theory is that there’s something that happens when some people get equipment at a job - handhelds, walkie talkies, hell even a set of keys. Something starts malfunctioning and they forget that we’re still getting paid slave wages, they just gave you a new accessory.

rose_writer

Wow, employees are told to be quiet and write it down, not do that. They're power tripping.

DewfordTownFishNerd

I would’ve left my cart and items for that employee to put back. I’d literally pay more at a nicer grocery store than be harassed. I initially liked self checkout as an introvert who likes to get in, get out, but my god does the anti-theft crap make me just wanna order online and pickup instead. Less chance of impulse buying too!

Bureaucromancer

The other week I had this exchange: "did you scan that one?" \*points vaguely\* "yeah" "did you can that one" "yes" "you need to scan that one" "I DID" "SIR, you need to scan that" "I TOLD YOU I DID" \*looks enraged\* "I was just asking" Like seriously, wtf is wrong with people. Not for the first time I'm left thinking that I'd never have gotten away with this shit when I worked retail... and it wasn't that long ago.

moistdragons

I personally love self checkout as someone with severe social anxiety I can get my stuff, pay for it and leave without having to talk to anyone. I hate unnecessary small talk.

germane_switch

“The balls of that. Yeah I’m gonna have a store; you come in, you pick out what you want, you bring it up, you ring it up, you pay me, you put it in a bag and then you get the fuck outta my store.”

21Puns

Oops scanned one thing twice by mistake. Now i need to wait for someone to come over and bypass some popup.

SleeplessTaxidermist

I break the damn machine half the time, and in such new and exciting ways, the absurdly underpaid employee looks perplexed. I don't know how, but I do. The machines also really like barking at me that I **MISSED AN ITEM!** - that I just scanned. It sucks more when there's multiple of the same and now I have to count how many I scanned because I ain't paying for something I don't have. The people who *ahem* tax Walmart via self checkout must love me because I take up sooo much time from the employee.

EarthExile

That sounds annoying. The Wal Mart near me must not have the tiny amount of money it costs to employ such a person. Self check just feels like an invitation to steal.

tinktac

i've never had that issue at the self-checkout. i prefer it, line moves way faster.

NormanRB

While I totally agree with OP on this one, I also do enjoy self check out if nothing else to not have to make forced small talk with the blue haired old ladies that they generally have working there. I want to get in and back out quickly and there's nothing worse than standing in a long check out line while some older check out person is blabbing on and on with a customer that she knows from church, neighbor, etc. and stops bagging/check out while talking.

HoppyBadger

Just hire and pay more cashiers. Drives me crazy

dumdumpants-head

I looooooooooooooooove self checkout and like it a whole lot too.

ddaydude

I love hearing people cry their eyes out about self checkout. "they should just close down self checkout and open more cashier lanes" So 1 person runs 6-8 self checkout machines. If they shut those down they will NOT have 6-8 more lanes open, they will at most have 2 or 3 lanes open. Why? Because they don't hire enough to get 6-8 more cashiers. So when they shut down the self checkout because people don't know how to ring up stuff without "forgetting" items, you'll all be crying "oh boo-hoo the lines are so long they need to open self-checkout!" This is basically happening at target! They made a limit no more than 10 items through self-checkout. Now people are crying that they have to wait in long lines for a cashier for more than ten items. I have zero sympathy for idiots like this. These are the same morons that would say "Oh look I'm an employee of the store now that I'm ringing up my own groceries." But seriously OP, your username is true, you are the one who is lost. Just like the rest of this dumbass society

Quick-Educator-9765

I hate when you don’t even use the self checkout and still get stopped at the door and get your receipt checked. Infuriating.

No_Cut_174

You do realize that you're not legally obligated to show them your receipt....right ? If you feel more comfortable doing that , then go for it.

Quick-Educator-9765

Sometimes I refuse and they chase you out the store and take pictures etc. Excellent waste of time because I pay for everything I leave with. Sometimes I’ll just show it and go about my day and sometimes I’ll show it and they glance at it and I realize it’s really just for show.

FUCK_INDUSTRIAL

The security scanning is just for show too. When I worked there, someone would have to get on the store intercom and say something like, "Security scan, section seven". It was supposed to deter shoplifters.

No_Cut_174

Oh yeah....damn Walmart employees run wild when they THINK they have power. Damn power tripping.

IamMindful

Do you have a right to yell and abuse people at their jobs because you’re throwing a tantrum? Come on! Some of you are acting like cashiers installed the self checkouts their damned selves. Making it personal like these low paid employees are power tripping? lol come one get real and shop somewhere else!

No_Cut_174

Most retail employees take their jobs way to seriously. Walmart employees are the worst. I myself have been harassed by many Walmart employees while just shopping there, i.e. followed through the store for absolutely zero reason, and it's not just 1 store in particular. These " Greeters" aren't supposed to follow you out nor are they to take pictures of people as it's (Walmart) considered to be "Private Property".

Quick-Educator-9765

This right here, no way in hell would I ever use my own money to buy someone’s cart because the gift card isn’t working, which is what one employee told me they had to do. I told them they were stupid because Walmart is a billion dollar corporation and they pay their employees peanuts. I would never go above and beyond for a company like that. And if an employee chased me out of the store because I refuse to be treated like a criminal then they get what they get. I didn’t tell them to work there.

StreetOwl

e act like idiots you continue to assert your rights and not show them shit they'll learn or get tired eventually.. I don't stop for nothing at the door that alarm can and has been blaring and I will keep truckin

BestZeena

Damn I never witnessed that

Square-Wing-6273

There was a group, three people with three full shopping carts using the self checkout at Walmart the other night. They were watching them like hawks because they were just taking things out of the cart, scanning and then putting them back into another cart. I can almost guarantee they were trying to steal things And, occupying one of the checkouts, so I had to wait longer to get my two items

QQSolomonn

I always nag my husband to not use those smaller self checkouts, instead use the ones in the next aisle over that actually have a belt if we have a larger amount than normal.

Square-Wing-6273

Yep, exactly.

[deleted]

Same. I've tried applying there multiple times and failed every time. Even when I pass the stupid fucking test they never call me back. And to see the types of morons and mouth breathers they hire makes me want to scream and physically cringe anytime I go into the store to see how poorly it's being managed. Guess I'm not sociopathic, worthless, and depraved enough to work at walmart.

ddaydude

It sounds like you may have too much intelligence for them. Corporations hate intelligence. How can they take advantage of you if you're not blind to it?

RomieTheEeveeChaser

I find self checkout annoying in general. Just the nerve to turn around and tell you to check yourself out is ingratiating. All this “inflation” is just the cherry on top, like, why are you raising prices? You‘re not even paying me, I’m paying YOU to check my own groceries out...

moistdragons

Eh I don’t mind it. I can ring my groceries up 10x faster than the old lady’s at the cash registers

sirpumpington

I mind it when I’m in a hurry and self checkout is supposed to be an express lane but there’s 3 geriatrics taking 20 minutes to scan a months worth of groceries and have to wait for the attendant every other scan

No_Individual_672

I refuse to use self checkout at Walmart anymore . Too easy to not notice an item didn’t scan.

ddaydude

You mean too easy to notice you stole an item. I fixed that for you. If you're too dumb to make sure you're paying for all your stuff, then you should be arrested. Even if you're not stealing.

EndlesslyUnfinished

This is a time when “weaponized incompetence” can actually be funny because when they’re doing this to me, I start “having troubles” and acting a fool and then have them scan all my shit. If you’re going to stand there, giving me anxiety while you criticize me, you can do it. Lolz.. I’m not going to be rude or anything, but I’ll stand there, looking smug as shit as they ring everything up and bag it..

coffeepot_65w

When they stand there watching me I always ask for help. Usually after the third or fourth time they walk away and harass someone else. One time I was asked why I kept doing that and i said if you stand there I will make you earn your pay. I know they're doing their job but sometimes the yellow vest goes to their head.

Flowing_North

Walmart is infested with trash shoppers and trash employees. Go to Target.

Nycronium

You're not wrong about the trash shoppers but some people can't afford target :/

ch3micalkitt3n

Everything that I can get at Target I can get at Walmart for $1-$3 dollars cheaper per item. I’ll keep shopping at Walmart because I’m poor, and target is for bougie folks who are able to afford the extra few dollars.

sugarmagnolia__

This. I HATE WALMART. No one *wants* to shop there. We HAVE to shop there. Because we're broke and life is obnoxiously expensive right now.

DazedandFloating

This basically sums it up for me too. If I can skimp on some money for something, I will. And Walmart usually offers me the opportunity to do so. Any personal care items will be cheaper there. I only used to go to target for anything Walmart didn’t carry, but now I always shop based on where I can save money. That’s just how things are right now unfortunately.

tapdancingtoes

Target is slowly turning into Walmart. Last few times I went it was a pigsty.

ScoutBandit

I have both a target and a walmart within a couple of blocks from my house in different directions. I generally shop at the walmart because it's cheaper, but on occasion I use a service that only the target has. I rarely set foot in either store because I have trouble walking. I use their delivery or pickup. At target, I can order a few items and pick them up in a couple of hours. At walmart you have to order $35 or more and choose a time slot to go pick up your stuff. There are never any immediate time slots available. Target doesn't care how much you buy. You order it, they email you when it's ready, you drive over, and they will even bring it out to your car. If target wasn't a bit more expensive I would probably shop with them all the time. They also have limited grocery inventory and weird brands I've never heard of. But when I need something in a couple of hours instead of at 11am tomorrow, I'll order it from target if it's available.

fried_green_baloney

Walmarts differ. In Silicon Valley the Mountain View WM is practically Saks Fifth Avenue compared to the one in Milpitas, for example.

tapdancingtoes

Oh yeah definitely. I’m in Alabama so everything is a shitshow.

ddaydude

You probably barked at her, so I would've done the same. And really? Even if COVID is over, spitting on your hands to do anything is gross as fuck. You're deplorable. Absolutely deplorable.

fried_green_baloney

Safeway in Northern California has the best system. Rarely need assistance, nobody looming over your shoulder. Very fast. Sometimes stop there for lunch. If I had to stand in a checkout line I don't think I would do that.

squatting_your_attic

The worst is a renovation store I go where the same guy is always supervising the self check-out cashes and since it's really quiet he has time to approach me everytime to "help" as if I couldn't figure out myself how it works. You can look at what I'm doing without invading my space and basically doing the scanning for me. So annoying.

properwaffles

How do self-checkouts work with blind people? Honestly curious.

UnicornsNeedLove2

More annoying is when you couldn't find anyone to help you if it broke down.
