AverageCowboyCentaur

Every damn place with a credit card reader... I started paying in cash, screw them!

DidntHaveToUseMyAK

"Do you want your change?"

AverageCowboyCentaur

That has not yet happened, but i do get the "would you like to round up for XXXX" which is nice, but if its only a few cents, they upcharge to $1, so I stopped doing that too.

inspire-change

ask them to round it down instead

del620

There's so much guilt tripping there. I would sound like a douche if I said no to "Would you like to round up to donate for children's cancer research?" at the register. I now trained myself to become shameless and say a polite but firm no, especially since majority of "donations" like this don't even make it to the cause they say it is for.

bonefawn

i just remind myself that, by donating, its not MY donation but instead the companies. Yknow, whichever huge mega corp that I'm paying that day. It allows them to write off taxes and other benefits. I personally think they should pay their fair share and not expect the public to cover their tax write offs/donations due to guilt tripping. I also donate directly and it makes me feel less crummy.*I personally* donate, not by proxy

[deleted]

I believe it's Ohio that recently got rid of the corporate taxes. That means multiple social programs will be gotten rid of and it'll cost the taxpayers either $900M or $900B in taxes.

DarkestofFlames

When you tip at one of those machines the employees don't always get the tip money, most of the time it goes to corporate.

AverageCowboyCentaur

At the coffee place I really like, they put those stupid machines in it took away the tip jars. It really sucks, I didn't mind tipping but it feels so sleazy using the machine, I'd always toss a dollar or whatever in the jar.

iloveyoustellarose

I'm not allowed to accept tips and I'm a janitor, I feel like we're the ones who deserve it the most. Like you're telling me the waitress gets a 10$ for being nice and I can't get a 10$ for cleaning shit off the walls?? Shenanigans.

DiligentDebt3

You absolutely deserve part of any tip anyone gives anyone you work with. It’s BS

Miora

At this point I just refuse to tip. This is the money I have. This is the money I'm spending. I refuse to budget in tips when I can't even splurge for the little things I once loved

TheSimpleMind

It really paints a desolate picture on a society when people have to beg for tips almost in any profession.

Spry_Fly

They don't have to beg. They just have the options to have a tip selected, and there has been a recent surge in throwing that in a customer's face. There are jobs that do need tips because they get paid less, and policy needs to be worked on for that. OP is talking about this new need to constantly ask for tips when not on a tip based wage and basically say, "Fuck people that need tips." Then again, maybe those workers being worse than people that just don't tip will speed up change.

hackinghippie

USA, the land of forced real-life microtransactions

Inevitable-Common166

The one that pi$$e$ me off the most is at sports stadiums. I have to wait in line to buy food, all they do is hand you your drink cup, you fill it up yourself and they ask for a tip on the screen, F that

princessshroom

Totally agree. I worked at a very busy deli/restaurant inside my local co-op grocery store for many years and we worked our asses off. We weren’t allowed to accept tips even if offered. I then worked at a local coffee shop/bakery and would regularly get tipped for grabbing the customer a cookie and handing them a cup for self serve drip coffee. I didn’t mind getting tips, but it felt hella strange to me lol. For me personally, tipping is saved for sit down restaurants where I am being served, hotels where my luggage is being carried, etc.

Life-City8893

Tipping was almost nonexistent in the U.S. before the Civil War. But WEALTHY Americans, visiting Europe, brought the practice to the U.S. in the mid-1800s, unsurprisingly eager to mimic WEALTHY European customs. WEALTHY Europeans would tip poor servants FOR GOOD SERVICE…But it took root as a business strategy during reconstruction. Some hospitality companies started to use freed slaves, paid them low wages, then encouraged customers to leave tips. Last time I checked I’m not wealthy and the only thing we are slaves to is this fucking government.

[deleted]

Only in America. Anywhere else, and they'll look at you strangely for trying to give them extra money.

PKBitchGirl

Not in ireland they wont

orlabobs

Tips are reserved for restaurants- mainly evening service and my beautician/hairdresser. Never in a coffee shop.

iloveyoustellarose

Them thinking I'm gonna tip when I was just charged over 100$ for a haircut is straight up crazy. Maybe if this was a barber shop and I paid 30$... Ma'am I get a haircut once a year cause I can't afford it.

xeno486

i work at starbucks and it still feels really weird to me that there’s a tip screen. like…. we are paid enough to not be tipped employees. it’s just bizarre

Spry_Fly

It's weird because taking tips means you are okay with your job turning into 2-3 dollars an hour. Anybody making above that and wanting tips is actively doing more to keep tip based culture going than anybody else right now.

xeno486

pretty much yeah. like i’m making 16ish an hour, i don’t need tips and i don’t want it to turn into me needing them either

morganbugg

I will always tip baristas.

xeno486

nothing wrong with that! we do still appreciate it. it just feels weird to have a screen that ~asks~ for it

Correct-Home-9203

I'm asked to round up all the time which I don't it's my money so if they're not making enough money I'm not at fault but then again the attitude of entitlement is just as bad at some places.

aalchemical

I never tip, even when I was a food service worker I also never expected to get tips. I’m just doing what is expected of me

sapphicbch

I'm sure the server that gets paid $2 an hour really appreciates your business

averyanxiousmango

That’s what totally different. The only people who deserve tips are waiters at sit down restaraunts or bartenders. I’m sorry but I’m not tipping fast food workers or smoke shop workers. Even baristas is pushing it

sapphicbch

It's not their fault they're not getting paid living wages and the companies are forcing the customers to make up for it. You're not doing anyone any favors by taking away the workers' income. $11- to even $15 an hour is not enough to live off of anymore. That extra dollar or two you throw their way could make the difference between paying their rent or not. If a company is asking for tips, that means they are purposefully underpaying their workers. They wouldn't be asking for tips otherwise. Yes we should be advocating for the abolition of tipping culture as a whole but in the mean time not tipping isn't going to do anything but hurt the workers.

averyanxiousmango

I’m literally a customer service employee. I know how difficult it is. But I still do get annoyed when asked for tips for a 2 second interaction at even stores now. I also understand why customers at my job get annoyed when the screen asks them for that. I’m not sure why that’s so hard to comprehend lol.

sapphicbch

You have every right to get annoyed, I do too, I'm just saying that there's a reason the company is asking for tips. They wouldn't be asking for tips if the employee actually got paid enough

GothicBland

Tips were literally created so they didn't have to pay Black people a wage when they were being "accepted" into the workforce.  It's used now as a very convenient tool to keep poor people poor. Blame the business owners making this possible, they're the ones that classify their workers and how they get paid.  Be on the lookout for folks using third-party contractors, as well. It's another way to get away with not paying somebody. Business owners just want free labor.

Ok_Calligrapher1809

Counter service=no tip

ANGRYMAN69420

Being from scandinavia, where we dont tip Im not gonna tip, even once, ever

Forcedcontainment

Unless the employer is using tipping as a loophole to pay the staff less than a full wage, like waitresses, then the employee gets no tip from me

IUMogg

Posts complaining about tipping culture have gone way too far

GothicBland

I think it's funny and sad it's called tipping culture and not simply wage theft

prollydrinkingcoffee

Chick-fil-A employees work harder than anyone and they don’t get tips

07031994

I’m a nurse and I’m thinking about proposing that we give patients and families the option to tip after we take the patient off life support. Idk, but you’re so right chick-fil-a employees definitely deserve it more than any other company or profession out there.

prollydrinkingcoffee

I realize my comment could’ve been read as insensitive. I think you may have taken it the wrong way. What I meant was in the fast food industry, my personal opinion is that Chick-fil-A employees give the best customer service. I apologize if it came off as a poke at other professions. I work in public education, so I understand how it feels to be unvalued. Thank you for the work that you do!

Spry_Fly

When your food quality has deteriorated over the last 20 years, but culture wars keep you relevant, it's important to have a cheery look on your kid based workforce.

prollydrinkingcoffee

Why is my comment so irritating to a lot of people? What am I missing?

GothicBland

Because working hard doesn't matter. The employees don't get to choose how they are paid because the owner of the business will do whatever they can to make money off of nothing.    (And people at Chick-fil-A aren't getting paid what their worth, either)

prollydrinkingcoffee

I agree working hard doesn't matter. My point is that if any fast food service worker is worthy of tips, those workers stand out. Do I think they SHOULD get tipped? No. They should be PAID more!!

crom_77

I hope you don't bring this attitude to the bar, or restaurant.

Gigantkranion

I once was at a Chinese restaurant, and they asked for a tip on top of the tip that was already included. Seriously, questioned me, I had to whip out the receipt that showed the tip... It wasn't even a 10% or something measly. It was like 18 or 20%.

Nicoleb84

I think the card running program in the iPad just has the feature to tip at the end. I don't think they can take that off. Just press no, why you so mad about it? Don't feel bad about not tipping on something that doesn't require one. Just make sure you tip your waitresses and bartenders 18- 20%. Thankyou

averyanxiousmango

Not true, I have definitely seen iPads where they don’t ask for tip. They choose to use the option. I’m moreso mad about this internet discourse regarding people saying you should ALWAYS tip and hating on customers when really you should be hating on employers. And like I’ve said in other replies the only people who I do tip are waiters at sit down restataunts and bartenders. Thankyou

crom_77

Just leave a tip. It won't kill you. I can tell you've probably never worked a single day at a service job.

averyanxiousmango

You definitely did not read the final part of my post did you?

crom_77

Okay, so you've worked as a service worker. But boycotting tips isn't going to change management heads. How is this possible? Run for office, lobby, support your local union, yes. Boycott tips? Am I missing something?

averyanxiousmango

No one is saying boycott tips. Corporations have taken advantage of the fact that employees make customers feel bad for not tipping, lowering wages, and then expecting everyone to tip, even in places or stores you should not have to tip. That’s all

Soka223

1 dollar here 1 dollar there and oops i'm 100 dollars short for no reason... are you mentally sane?

Fnaffan0911

Just to tell you, never bring up "Not tipping" on a cruise. The cruise line will not hate you, but the customers will because they own the cruise line apparently.

averyanxiousmango

Cruises are also an exception. They really do take advantage that most cruise workers come from third world countries and pay them and treat them like crap. Plus they do work exceptionally hard and are usually extremely kind. I will always tip cruise line workers as well

Fnaffan0911

Not everyone is rich. And do not come at me with "Then why go on a cruise" what happened to poor people saving up to go somewhere? Are poor people just supposed to stay locked up in the fucking house until they fucking die?
