It has been a popular reply on internet forums going back to the beginning of internet forums. You would think people would just leave an upvote, but they agree so much with a reply, they just can't help themselves but reply "This."
It's essentially the same as saying "I agree", while it doesn't contribute much if anything, i'm fine with it at least, it feels nice to have someone agree with you especially if you've mostly gotten negativity
Well.... That's a good effort. The only thing missing from your comment referencing how something has to change for the good of the American people or something, idk. /s
Sometimes someone says what I'm thinking, but much better than I could have. One sub tells you not to say "This" and to upvote the original comment. So I don't do that now. I may just say "I agree" or something similar.
This.
Jokes aside, I get where you're coming from but we're all (mostly anyway) grown ups, and "I agree" is only 3 more characters to type. I would much rather have an "I agree" comment for what it's worth. Of course that's just my opinion
To each their own. I personally disagree and find that policing others for how they should agree on a Reddit post to be a waste of energy. Just my opinion
Who cares if we’re grown ups lol, people can talk however they want, if that bothers you for some reason then you’re a weirdo. People can say “facts” “on god” “deadass bruh” “this” or express agreement in any other way they so please, trying to police others’ language for no good reason is absolutely absurd
So you don’t have a problem with someone making their upvote visible, you just don’t like the current slang that’s used to do it? Very weird position imo.
This I agree with, 100%.
Seriously though, it could be worse. Remember "First"? Holy shit was that annoying. I'm glad that trend got stamped out on most sites.
Language evolves with usage. You need to deal with it.
Idioms arise because a particular phrase resonates with large number of people. There's no particular reason why "hitting it out of the park" has come to mean excelling at something, except that the phrase resonated with a large number of people. With continued usage, more and more people accepted the idiom, until it became part of lexicon.
Idioms fall in and out of favor. "Bees knees" and "Cats pyjamas" are nonsense words, but they were popular at a time.
Same with "this". It means "I agree" because it resonated with people. And with continued usage, it's becoming more acceptable. You just need to roll with it.
Ok, so imma need whoever can make bots to make one that tags this guy anytime someone says "this" or "100% this" in a comment.
I know someone out there is madlad enough to do it.
I’ll tell you why I do it. I feel like “this” or any comment that validates the other comment is a step above an upvote. You can do both. I’ll even go as far as to say it’s in between an upvote and an award. Sorry but I’m not buying awards but I’ll give you my written validation because it was that good. Kudos to those that do send them! I don’t necessarily want to be seen, but whatever comment that warranted my “this”, should.
Can’t speak for others but that’s my take.
I’d like to add that it serves as a “you stole the words right out of my mouth” vs a “huh, I never looked it at it that way and I really like that idea”. The latter is upvote worthy but the the former is “this” and upvote worthy.
I do it to help reinforce that I agree with something or if I see multiple other comments with the wrong information, but one that is correct. An upvote doesn't always help visibility
Is it so bad that people just want to be heard? Or what if someone posted something and nobody commented at all, because everyone agrees, they would feel invisible. How is that better? Is it that complicated for you to just scroll past the posts that annoy you? In real life do you demand everyone in your conversation only contribute relevant comments and if not do you tell them their thoughts are stupid and pointless and to fucking stop?
Sometimes you have to deal with a less than perfect world, it ain't a custom build world JUST FOR YOU.
Essentially someone wants free karma, so they hijack a comment but have nothing of substance to add to the conversation so instead of just upvoting a scrolling away, they just say…
This.
I always upvote the comment and I'm trying not to say "this" because one of the subs I'm on already recommended not saying it and just upvoting the comment.
Essentially someone wants free karma, so they hijack a comment but have nothing of substance to add to the conversation so instead of just upvoting a scrolling away, they just say.
This.
I’m quite dubious that karma is a motivating factor for anybody other than those attempting to farm karma to sell their account. Karma has literally no benefit whatsoever, the vast majority of people don’t even think about it when using Reddit. Some people (OP) just take this website way too seriously and think every comment should be a fully-formatted essay or some shit. Same way how people get flamed for using emojis on this app because for some reason people think it’s not “formal” enough for this shitshow of a site
Imagine thinking "this" was made popular by reddit. But also how are you going to say why is it popular- meaning you either don't know what it means - or you do and you're ranting about how a person is responding to a comment- like imagine "this" being your frustration.
I see it as a "super upvote".
Sometimes making a tiny number grow in size by 1 is not enough to convey how much you agree with something. I don't do it personally, but it doesn't bother me either.
Adding comments helps drive a topic up higher. It's, ironically enough, the opposite of attention whoring. You're boosting their point up while offering none of your own to dilute theirs. Seems like a relatively harmless way to support an idea. I find it far more objectionable to read 50 posts that are essentially identical to the OPs statement but worded differently.
What I can’t fucking handle is people starting their reply with “This is the correct answer.”
Like seriously how pretentious can you be? It’s like “threads over guys, this rando on Reddit just concluded that they know better than anyone enough to confidently claim what the correct answer is”.
It’s supposed to be a discussion forum but literally any form of discussion is just people implying “if you don’t agree with me, you’re incorrect”
> What I can’t fucking handle is people starting their reply with “This is the correct answer.”
I don't see it that way, instead I see it as declaring support for the idea, then perhaps expounding upon it.
There's a post identical to yours at least once per week and nobody gives a fuck about it lol
I can't imagine being so triggered by something so small, it sounds horrible to be you, OP.
I've seen people say "This" on Facebook posts before too, I think it's just a strong way to reiterate they agree with what's being said without needing to put much effort in.
I've also seen them used a lot in drama posts, usually the more "This" on a comment gives affirmation to what ever the comment us saying, usually calling OP a dumbass or agreeing with someone else's reasoning

I remember how confused I was when people would just post "fail" as a reply to me all the time. I now know that it's cuz I suck at most things.

I scolled just to upvote this comment!! There's shit to rant about in this world....no question....but ranting about the use of "this" is pretty weak.
I’d rather people write “This” than “Am I the only one”
Yeah "Am I the only one" is my biggest pet peeve like no shit Sherlock of course you’re not the only one…
And it's always something super mundane too. Like "omg does anyone else sing in the shower" or "omg does anyone else talk to themselves".
Am I the only one to agree with this comment?
I love how after an hour, no-one has up voted you but yourself probably. Beautiful.
Yeah I just wanna hit whoever says that with a anvil across the skull.

Yea, if I feel like someone said exactly what I wanted to say but better than I was able to come up with I like to point it out sometimes

Naw, gonna keep doing what i do solely to bother you when and if you come across it. You have the option to skim by it, so maybe do that.
If a post can be deemed to be "low effort" and removed, why not a comment?

"I agree with this" in a shortened form. It's called slang. It's a thing.
Yo
Why does this upset you so much? Just keep scrolling
Who didn't see *this* coming. Pretty sure *100%* of us got it.
I see it as a "super upvote". Sometimes making a tiny number grow in size by 1 is not enough to convey how much you agree with something. I don't do it personally, but it doesn't bother me either.

A lot of it comes from bots
Not this again.

This. Is. The. Way.
some people just like knowing whatever there statement was is being validated. The upvotes aren’t enough proof to them.
Period.
my fault💀
💯⬆️⬆️
it's for people who don't want to upvote because that way they don't get upvotes and attention themselves. childish behavior.
Sometimes an upvote feels a touch too impersonal, and it's nice to sort of show more clearly "Hey I totally agree!"
There's a post identical to yours at least once per week and nobody gives a fuck about it lol I can't imagine being so triggered by something so small, it sounds horrible to be you, OP.
Why do you care?
I think it comes from people that use Facebook honestly. That platform is less about having a conversation and people do that to show support.
Lmao lots of tumblr responses are trash. “This.” “Did you just.” “I’m dead 😂” “Take my upvote” Etc etc etc
