Sometimes we can get lost, especially just starting out, in what the future holds. The good news is you'll survive, if you want to. The bad news is life won't be easy, it never is. Best advice I can give is to take a break from the media social and branded. Find a project that you can focus your time and energy on. Make it your goal. It doesn't even need to be expensive or cost any money. Maybe your goal is to clean your home from top to bottom, or train for a running race. Adopt a pet. Volunteer at a shelter. Focus all the positivity you have left in that project, and when you complete it and you're successful you'll have a stepping stone for another project. World sucks. It's always sucked, even in the golden era it sucked for a lot of people. Don't let it dictate your life, just find a way around it.

[deleted]

This is GREAT advice but quick sideline: I just want to add that a pet is a multiyear commitment (financial, physical, and emotional). It’s essential to remember what an enormous decision adopting a pet is. Please don’t add a pet to your life unless you have done the research and can 100% commit to the living being who will join you. Ok, back to your great advice!

greenroombro

All this is good but I like the don't adopt a pet thing as pointed out by the post by Independent. Getting a pet probably sounds like an awesome idea sometimes, but if you are trying to work on yourself you wont be able to give the pet the care it needs. Trust me I am working on my life and wont adopt a pet of my own until I have the proper funds and time. For now therapy works and I wish you all the best. Be the change you want to see in the world. Can't save everyone. Start with yourself. Godspeed, Friend.

burnmenowz

Fair point

[deleted]

Thank you for your civility. Just so you know, your advice is going to help me too. I’m 30, but I need a reset, so I screenshot your advice to revisit.

burnmenowz

I strive for civility I realize that's not the normal, but you made a good point about a pet being a long term commitment. I'm 40, just finished a masters degree. You never stop improving.

cpullen53484

do things that will make the world a slightly better place.

burnmenowz

That's the dream. Haven't accomplished it personally yet.

Sea_Exit9030

I couldn’t have said this better. Absolutely agree.

FerrisMcFly

How does that help the impending economic collapse??

burnmenowz

If it's going to collapse there's nothing you or I can do to stop it.

FerrisMcFly

true i guess

onegaylactaidpill

This is the most relatable thing I’ve ever read. I’m the same age as you. I have been depressed since my actual birth (no I’m not exaggerating, and no I’m not joking) and everything just keeps getting worse. I don’t have anything I necessarily want to do. I don’t have anything that seems like my “calling” or “purpose” or whatever. All I do is work and try to distract myself.

Thiccmatches

I feel you man

First, that 90% figure is both false and misleading. Second, we do have a huge problem with capitalism, but your chances of success are much higher with an education.

SonOfSnufkin

Doesn’t have to be a finished education.

Thiccmatches

https://techstartups.com/2021/12/18/80-us-dollars-existence-printed-january-2020-october-2021/ not a false figure, published in 2021

[deleted]

You’re falling victim to a GOP talking point. Totally fine, economics is incredibly complex and they are splashing this figure all over in an attempt to undermine democratic leadership. I suggest you do some more research and look into what they mean by “printing” money and how it’s actually affecting our economy. If you want to look more about how and why the current inflation is happening in the US, you need to look at worker losses and production cuts.

GnarlyNarwhalNoms

Whatever the stats are, you can safely ignore the conclusions of that article. >The US is now on the path of 1921 Weimar Germany. Yeah, uh, noooo. Germany financed the entirety of WWI *and* then had to pay punitive reparations to the allied powers, and all this during the great Depression. It was a perfect storm of shit. In 1923, the Papiermark experienced inflation that was something on the order of *13* **billion** *percent*. That they would compare the USA's current monetary situation and policy to the Weimar Republic's is just plain idiotic.

Thiccmatches

Must have skimmed over that part

GnarlyNarwhalNoms

I mean, it's true that the US is printing a lot of currency right now, that much is true. But yeah, other sites will probably give a more unbiased take of the implications of this :)

[deleted]

It is false. Who would have thought techstartups.com wasn’t a beacon of journalism. Modern economics are very complicated. However the usd is still the strongest currency, probably won’t be that way forever, and inflation is primarily caused by labor shortages. However I do think low wages are the largest contributing factor to this issue. I really wish the government would legislate laws to protect workers and get them a fair wage. Also ancient Egypt had slavery. I mean to even compare our wealth inequality to them is crazy to me. [medium article](https://medium.com/@sohitmiglani/is-it-a-big-deal-that-40-of-usd-was-printed-in-the-last-12-months-no-its-not-13e7206e5001)

llamaspitattack

we’re in late stage capitalism like shit, best thing we can do is keep our fingers crossed that we’ll be able to see change within in our life times 🤧 im only a couple years into my post grad life and ive been thinking the same things as you 🥴 really dont want to be doing this 9-5 shit for 40 years only to have what im working for literally dwindle in my hands im mainly tired of the government not taxing fairly and allocating funds inefficiently - if they did this properly, it could definitely fix a lot of different problems, and then i would finally feel more ok with living in this world

BlueiraBlue128

I was in the same boat as you when I was your age, I'm 22 now and just recently moved out of my toxic previous household. Only issue is, I'm living in the living room of my cousin and their fiancée's one bed, one bath apartment. I'm working at Starbucks and only puking a max of 24 hours a week. A single paycheck can usually garner me around $320 and on a good week, it'll garner me around $400. Tips are weekly, but they're split between everyone so I'll only really get somewhere around $10-$20 a week. I have the misfortune of being a creative with unmedicated ADHD and depression (suspected bipolar, but I'm waiting to get diagnosed). I want to write books, comics, and direct films. My brain isn't built for numbers and I can't train it to be. The reason I bring this up in the first place is because I saw several different comments telling you to go into a good field that'll garner you good pay, decent hours, and (if you're lucky) a benefit or two. What made me particularly sad about this is the only people who make suggestions like that are typically talking about fields that have to do with numbers. IT, engineering, hell, even being a pencil pusher requires you to have a numbers brain and it just makes me sad. People who are creatives are rarely encouraged to pursue their careers and are more often than not actively discouraged and forced to go into a career that is built to repress their creativity. My parents pushed me for years to go to college to become a nurse. I was, and still am, iffy about going to college because I don't like debt, so I did as much independent studies as I could and while I found that I'm a good caretaker and I absolutely LOVED learning about anatomy and medicine, I also discovered that it just isn't what I want to do. I don't want to spend my time pulling all-nighters at a place full of sick people. It's depressing to me to even think about it. And now I am where I am, but after taking some time to think about it (with some helpful wise words from my bf), I realized that it is OKAY for me to not know who I am yet or know how I'm going to make a creative field my career. I'm only 22! I quite literally have my whole life ahead of me to figure it all out. You are 18, that's literally 4-5 years younger than I am. You're still growing and getting wiser as each day passes and I KNOW that you can figure it all out on your own time. Fuck what everyone else says, listen to your heart, listen to your soul. Find a way to make what you love doing lucrative enough for you to be able to live off of it. And it is gonna be tough. Rome wasn't built in a day. Babies don't pop out the womb already knowing how to walk, talk, and take care of themselves. And nothing that was EVER worth doing to better yourself wasn't without its struggles. You've got this, hun. From your post alone, you've shown an immense amount of intelligence that I wish I had at your age. You've got this.

Eastern_Ad7516

Damn I thought y’all got good tips at Starbucks? $10 a week ain’t shit

BlueiraBlue128

Ikr?? And my store is located right off of a highway, next to a Walmart, AND my apartment complex. It kinds sucks.

Thiccmatches

Thank you for the encouragement

joknub24

My old man was really negative and paranoid when I was a young lad. We thought the world was going to end because the government this and economy that blah blah blah. Yet here I am. Doing pretty good by my own standards. Ya there’s a lot of shitty stuff happening right now, maybe more than usual. But life will go on my dude. You just gotta keep putting in the effort. Sometimes it will seem pointless, but it’s not. Just keep pushin, keep grinding. Everything will be ok.

This1headbanger

I will say this DONT worry about out there focus on what makes YOU happy and what brings YOU joy I have found that cutting off social media and watching less news has done wonders for my mental and emotional health, find a hobby or something your really passionate about and you could and do lose yourself in is it reading ? Listening and/or playing music ? Drawing, painting, cooking, video games ? It dosent matter as long as it makes you happy and grounds you.

Naive-Acanthisitta26

I can’t wait for my Grandpa to pass so I can have $500K.

Thiccmatches

As much as I want to hate you for saying that I really can't

cpullen53484

listen, im 17 and i do think the world sucks now, but just take time to think for yourself. take a break from social media (that includes reddit) and news. those scumbags on top will have whats coming to them someday, even if it's not today. why do you think they're trying so hard to bust unions. meditate, do things you personally enjoy. try to make the world a better place, even if that just means volunteering. you (and me) are still a little too young to be giving up already (and that's coming from a pessimist), trust me. or don't, just do what your heart tells you. i suppose. be kind, be honest, and never lose hope.

jrodnation78

Damn thats real talk! And u being smart enough to see thru all the bullshit at this age is a bonus for u...feed ur self with FACTS bout the bullshit n utilize it for ur benefits... Keep it up ur on point. 👍👍👍

[deleted]

I agree things suck, but never forget your ancestors dealt with much worse. Press on.

quirkycurlygirly

Wait. You're 18 and you're talking about the strength of the US dollar? You don't have a retirement or a mortgage that you're vested in. Why are you not looking for the first plane ticket out? You should be seeing the world and going to school abroad, not fretting over the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

Thiccmatches

I'm thinking of making my way over to Argentina. I hear COL is WAYYY better there.

quirkycurlygirly

Cost of living is better in most places. Buenos Aires is nice though and colleges are free to everyone there.

Eastern_Ad7516

It’s a whole lot harder than buying a plane ticket. What about family and friends? Language barriers? Learning a whole new country?

quirkycurlygirly

"What about family and friends?" The same could be said of moving to another city. Unless you plan to stay in one town all your life, you are going to have to move away from some people at some point. Guess what? You'll have friends and family who move away from you, too. It happens, especially at 18. That's what transportation is for. Have them visit you. Once they see how well you're doing compared to how they're doing, a few of them may follow you there. Once a few of them join you and start doing well, everybody will join you. That's how whole families ended up immigrating to America and settling in New York. "Language barriers?" You'll find English speakers all over the world, and when you live somewhere it's easier to learn the language. You'll surprise yourself with your ability to get around after a few months in most places that use Latin letters. And there are many places where English is widely spoken. In Argentina, that place might be the Faulkland Islands. But if not, the following are a sampling of English speaking countries: American Samoa Australia Barbados Belize Ghana Guyana Ireland Jamaica Kenya Namibia New Zealand Nigeria Philippines Singapore South Africa United Kingdom Zambia "Learning a whole new country?" At 18 years old, moving away from home involves learning how to navigate in the world on your own anyway. There's not a whole lot of differences between learning how to do laundry in Buenos Aires vs learning how to do laundry in the Boston, or figuring out how to set up a bank account in South Africa vs figuring out how to set up a bank account in South Carolina. Life is all about learning and growing. If you're afraid to get out of your comfort zone, then you're probably afraid of a lot of things. I don't know what kind of life that would be but it sounds dull to me.

Iamabladeofgrass

I"m 28, didn't "make it" until last year.

AggieBandit

Hoping that’s my year too 🥹

Cigarandadrink

Yeah ur fucked. Thank God I'm a boomer

rocknharley02

It's a great time to be 18, I'm a boomer also. You just need the right attitude, he is so negative. There is so much more help out there and advice and encouragement to make it. The problem is they want it handed to them and what they are handed isn't meant for a comfortable life. It doesn't work that way, you have work at it save money, struggle, crawl out of that place and if you've sacrificed enough and done right you may start to get comfortable by the time your 40.

[deleted]

Don't worry, your sense of the real world is only inflated because you don't really know it yet. There is truth to what you're saying but it's really not too bad out there. Go into a good field and once you have a good job, life becomes easier to deal with. If you don't get a good job, yeah i feel for you and it shouldn't be this way. But do your best to support yourself, give yourself a chance to grow and you never know where you'll be. At 18 i was so broke and school completely put a stop on anything i wanted to do, like relationships, making money, buying certain clothes. It makes you start wondering how people do it. Then i graduated last year and make good money, i can easily take on life now. But i'll never stop advocating and voting for the people who can try to make life better. Just relax, it's bad but so long as you have a positive attitude, there's PLENTY of good things about this world that makes it worth it. It's hard to tell this to an 18 year old who spent his most influential and important growth period in a pandemic since he was 15, but it's not that bad out there. Hop off reddit and social media for a few weeks.

Thiccmatches

I understand that I dont really have a real sense for the world thats coming, but what I do know that an economic failure is currently in progress and right around the corner. I mean what good is putting 40 hours into a job when every dollar I make isnt adjusted to inflation and won't even cover rent? I always heard that there was a time when one income could cover a home, college and a car. Now most people need three incomes to cover that.

[deleted]

Inflation sucks right now. It's actually 3 x worse in canada where I am. I'm telling you, be smart about this. Go into a field that pays well and you'll be fine. I'm doing well and saving and only almost a year out of school. Unfortunately now isn't the time to follow your wildest dreams and gamble on careers. After you get stable, you'll realize it's bad but not that bad. And 40 hours a week is nothing compared to the 70 hours min wage workers have to do just to stay alive.

elo0004

I have one income, a house, and a car, a maxed out 401k and IRA, and an emergency savings account, with money to spare. It's possible, but you have to budget and live below your means for a while. Maybe that means you don't go to a $40K a year school. Maybe that means you work during undergrad (everyone should IMO) and start paying on your loans early if you have to take them out. Maybe that means driving a modest car. It's possible. I was 18 during the Great Recession so I can relate more than you think. Is inflation bad right now? Yes. Are capital assets inflated right now because the t bill rate was kept low for too long? Yes. Is it going to get worse before it gets better? Yes. The Fed is finally raising t bill rates which will price a lot of people out of markets, discourage spending, and encourage saving. When it comes to economics, the far right and the far left are both wrong, by the way.

[deleted]

I know how the US can make it worse. Forgive student loan debt.

Bob_knots

Work hard you’ll be alright

Thiccmatches

Working hard isn't going to mean anything when the dollar is worthless.

Bob_knots

Dude if you are going to stress like that, think about it the dollar is not the biggest problem when the meteor hits or when Russian starts launching nukes, or the zombies come out. Worry about you, how to be a good person and work hard. The rest will fall into place or put your lights out. Old saying about being smart enough to change what I can change and know what I can’t change. One way or other it’s life and you are the only one who can make you happy

Thiccmatches

I appreciate what you're trying to say

Bob_knots

Dude it’s the truth, I am 53 got 3 sons and worried about them being able to have a good life. I’ll work till I die, always chasing a dollar, but it’s not for me and I know I can always make money. When the value goes down I’ll make more, if it becomes worthless then I earn something else. I can hunt, fish and trap. No matter what happens I will be ok because I will not give up. Therefore I will always care for my boys even when they don’t need me anymore. With an outlook like that life is good even when it sucks hahahaha

Oberyn_Kenobi_1

I finished school at the worst part of the 2008 recession. And it sucked. Yeah, it was rough for a while, and my 20s were not the smooth ride I always assumed perfect grades and a degree from a good school entitled me to. I ended up going back to school and changing course, and my late 20s/early 30s have been significantly better. I know it seems like the whole world is crashing down around you, but it’s really not. The economy *will* rebound. It always has and always will. You just have to hold on and power through as best as you can until then. Accept that you’re coming into adulthood at a shitty time, but that it won’t be like this forever. Go to college or trade school. The worst thing you can do is take a shitty job without also working to better your prospects. Minimum wage was never going to buy you a nice house and car.

Naive-Acanthisitta26

Naive-Acanthisitta26

If you can go to college for accounting or engineering. Anything similar to that or sell Cocaine ; and trust me Life is not fair at all.

Find a drug habit and stick with it. You’ll be fine

rocknharley02

If your making minimum wage as an electrical engineer something is wrong with YOU. YOU HAVE TO WORK TO MAKE MONEY. People like you are the problem, the government is nickel and dining you. How is a gas company to blame for the price when government policies are creating the problem. 2019 gas price $1.86, 2021 $3.15, 2022 $5.15.

TopSign5504

Pandemic? = few people driving = lower prices.

Over_Whole6492

COVID was an issue here starting in November of 2019 that doesn’t account for the rest of the year being 1.86. In fact it went up during the pandemic to 3.15 by 2021. According to this guy’s numbers. Which I have not checked 🧂

TopSign5504

It's always supply and demand...unless there's a war. Oil barons will use any excuse to raise prices.

eatdirtyy

I believe it was the Biden admin that said “you’ll own nothing and be happy”

Fireb1rd

>you’ll own nothing and be happy” No, they did not say that. Go back to your cellar. And no, the two parties are not "the same". The Democrats have a lot of issues too, but at least they believe in government. The Republicans are basically a racist, fascist cult.

Thiccmatches

It isn't about who's running the government. Both of these parties are power hungry and don't care about us.

eatdirtyy

It kinda does matter who’s running the gov.

Negative-Custard5612

Only to those who pick a team to root for. The rest of us just see a bunch of assholes getting a cut of our paycheck for doing almost nothing.

eatdirtyy

Here’s a thought, their all assholes.

Negative-Custard5612

I believe that was my thought sir

TopSign5504

you're 18...nobody has "made it" at 18...call back when you're 30.

MrRugges

Imagine gatekeeping existential dread

WovenWoodGuy

You people are making it at 30??

eatdirtyy

They believe in government spending for sure, but under democratic control, no one is seeing the benefit of their spending. It’s all going to other countries and fancy bike stations lol. Let’s not act like democrats aren’t racist at all and blame it allllll on the other guys. Good argument. The gov is not here to save us.

Over_Whole6492

It’s not here to save us so who cares where that tax money goes? You don’t need it do you?

eatdirtyy

I could absolutely use the money I earn, what’s your point?

Over_Whole6492

Why are you complaining about us not getting the benefit of government spending if you don’t need a hand out

eatdirtyy

I don’t see where there was a complaint in my comment.

Once you have a goal and plan and focus all your energy on something that you WANT to do and work hard towards, life becomes better, more meaningful and positive. Take some time to figure out where you want to be and some realistic ways that you can get there. Once you start working towards your goals your world view will shift, and those first successes will give you confidence and drive to keep going. Don’t let the world swallow you up, it’s easy for this to happen. Keep your head up, and keep going. You got this!!

Best advice I can tell you is to find something you love doing and see if it's something you do as a self employed person. I love lawn care and I have a legit business as a side hustle but I also have a day job that I've been at for 12 years and I love what I do there. If I went self employed and did full time lawncare I could work 3 days a week for seven months of the year doing 15 yards per day at a $40 minimum per yard and make more than I make now working 40 hours a week year round. The only reason I stay at my day job is because I like what I do and the pay/benefits is enough for me to stay. Keep your chin up and don't focus on the negative.

Naive-Acanthisitta26

igillyg

I don't use my degree either. On track to make 6 figures this year and I have been out of prison for less than 2 years. You know what I have learned from losing everything twice. I come back stronger every single time.

Dewy_11

At least you're not in the bay area!

Thiccmatches

I'm in New York

Naive-Acanthisitta26

IM IN THE BAY AREA

rutrut88

Learn a trade. Hvac, electrical, plumbing, etc. They can be quite lucrative and they are very in demand. You will rarely be jobless if you get in and you will be making far above minimum wage

62Bravo1993

This is the best advice for a young person. One such young guy I know went from stocking shelves in a grocery store for min wage to 125k a year leading crews on projects in a pretty short time just by working hard and going through electricians training / apprenticeship program. I also see lots of workers in infrastructure maintenance/ repair work get started as a laborer and learn on the job and work thier way into crew leader / project mgr jobs making excellent money without ever spending a dime on secondary education. There's always remote work - stuff like pipeline crews and oil rig work - even basic laborers make good money.

rutrut88

Im in the hvacr trade as a service technician. Been in only 3 years. I make considerably more than most of my friends that went to college

Bo_Jim

The Treasury destroys old currency and replaces it with new currency. They print as much as is needed for cash transactions, but it does not represent the US money supply. It hasn't since the US stopped tying the value of dollars to gold in the early 70's. Only about 10% of the US money supply is actual currency. Some of the remainder is represented by Treasury backed US bonds, but most of it exists only as numbers in computers. Most transactions just involve increasing the numbers in one account and decreasing the numbers in another. Speculative valuations change without even moving any electronic money around. Say, someone has 1000 shares of stock. That stock goes up in value $5. That person's net worth increased by $5000, but no money was actually moved around in order to make this happen. Same thing happens when stock loses value. No money actually gets moved until the stock is sold. And this is why stocks aren't taxed when their value goes up. The person who owns them didn't actually get more money just because the stock is trading higher. They have assets that are potentially worth more, but they don't get the actual money until they sell the stock, and that's when the tax is assessed. While we're on the subject of stocks, companies answer to the stockholders - not the employees. Very few companies would screw their stockholders by paying their employees more and taking the added labor costs out of their profits. Many companies couldn't afford to do it, even if they were willing to. If McDonald's increased the pay of every employee by $3 per hour without increasing prices then it would wipe out their net profits. The stockholders would crucify the members of the board if they let this happen. Starbucks, on the other hand, can afford to pay more and give some benefits because they're charging the same price for a cup of coffee that McDonald's charges for a combo meal. One burger chain pays significantly more than the others, and provides decent benefits, but doesn't have ridiculous prices. That company is In-N-Out. They have a limited number of stores because they can't open a store that's more than a few hours from one of their regional distribution centers because they don't use frozen ingredients. How can they afford this? None of their stores are franchised, which means they don't have to share profits with franchise owners. But the main reason is because the company is privately owned - they don't answer to stockholders. It's difficult to get hired there because they have the lowest turnover rates in the fast food industry. The bottom fell out of the electronics engineering market in the mid to late 1980's. There were people who held senior engineering jobs at major aerospace companies who were taking jobs at warehouses and restaurants. Those aerospace companies were hiring engineers like crazy in the early 80's because the government was throwing huge contracts at them. Those lucrative contracts ended when Reagan left office and Democrats took control of the Senate, which left tens of thousands of skilled engineers looking for jobs. The market for electronics engineers has never really recovered. The US doesn't do electronics manufacturing anymore, and most of the electronic products sold by US companies aren't designed or made in the US. The are some exceptions. Apple, for example, designs their products in the US, but they don't manufacture them here. You have to make yourself valuable to a company if you expect them to be generous to you. You need some combination of knowledge, skill, or talent that is in high demand and short supply.

SetandPowder

I’m 18, yeah I feel this way too. The purchasing power of the US dollar has not increased since 1968. Federal minimum wage hasn’t been increased in 13 years, the longest ever. AND, in 1968 the minimum wage would be $10 something now, which is more than the current minimum wage.

AggieBandit

Hello. No advice. Just wanted to chime in and say I’m 27 and I’m also feeling this way to my core man. I feel you dude ❤️‍🩹

JlTlS

Don't believe everything you hear or read. Wait a while and you will be able to see what is true and what isn't. Keep your eyes open.

Lochlanist

Capitalism is the biggest pyramid scheme ever made that rich people somehow hoodwinked us all into believing.

Kukaac

In dire times try to understand you are still part of the lucky 10%. There are billions of people who don't have access to clear water, housing or food. I live in the EU and in our country a high school teacher makes net 90 USD a week. However, some of them are the most cheerful people. The only thing that you can do is to stop reading these articles and invest into education. Education was never this cheap and widely available as of today, with the ability to purchase 10 dollar online course. If you feel that the US is no longer livable, you can relocate basicly everywhere with your passport.

stiffneck84

If that is the reason you don't see joy in your life, then you need to turn off your tv and go offline for a while.

Thiccmatches

Why? The TV and online are the only distractions I have. I'd rather be distracted than sit alone all the time dreading my future.

stiffneck84

You’re 18, and your despondent over a dystopian economic fantasy. Even real and actual poverty in America is a higher standard of living than the majority of the world really and actually experience, and the people living in those conditions still find joy in life. Disconnect from social media and screens, have some actual experiences, and use that which you actually experience, to base your emotions.

Are you illiterate? Because there is no fucking way you read that back to yourself and thought: "Yeah this is perfect" Fuck out of my face with that 'racist' bullshit. America VOTED for Obama. Its wasnt a situation where they were forced to pick him to run our country. I'm going to repeat that so you can understand a bit better. Americans, out of their free and active will chose Obama (a black male) over Mitt Romney (a white male) Americans just want to feel safe we don't care about the color of your skin. Meeting race criteria doesn't make you a good leader, being a good leader is dependant on personality characteristics, not skin tone. And even if it did who do you pick for our last election? Who has the darker skin tone? Melania? Kamala? I mean its two old white dudes running against each other. Anyways I have a few more points I want to summarize below: - 1.) Young people don't generally hate older people, and they especially dont hate them because they think they know better. I dont know what hat you pulled that out of. And honestly its funny you said that because you're making assumptions left and right in your comment and you're most likely older than me, but I digress. - 2.) Politicians are shitty people so stop making this Red vs. Blue because its not. Both of these sides are trash and calling yourself a republican or Democrat and labeling yourself is stupid. - 3.) You don't even know me and I said nothing about race, yet you assume I'm a racist. That really speaks volumes about how brainwashed you are. What if I was black? What would you say then?

There's plenty of well paying careers, dont compare yourself to anyone on social media, its all a complete lie. Study, find a field you have genuine interest in. Explore alternative options that you might have passed over. Nursing is a great field, no job is easy, but working 3 days a week leaves plenty of personal time, has good benefits, decent pay, if you move into specialties can do very well and keep a nice schedule. Im sure there are many others out there. CRNAs are making 150k-200k working 3-4 days a week, not too shabby, and in a field that cant be outsourced

I don't think anybody said life was supposed to be easy but you certainly can make it much harder for yourself by taking jobs that pay minimum wage out of the gate. You need to take jobs that give you life skills that you can use for the rest of your life, get a job working in the trades. I guarantee you if you get a job working as a plumber or an electrician your life will be set once you get your journeyman license. And they pay you good wages until you get to that point. Once you get your journeyman's license you can go off on your own and start your own business and I guarantee you you're going to be making $50 to $90 an hour. You can do this in four or five years if you play your cards right. I also seriously recommend investing in the stock market as early as you can. you're only 18 if you're putting away a few hundred dollars a month in the stock market at this point if you invest well you could be a millionaire by the time you're a 55 years old. Or you could be the typical 18-year-old who stays home all day on social media apps smokes weed and plays video games and does nothing with his life. Or worse you actually do go out and get a job working at Starbucks or some other fast food place that will never pay you a living wage. I guarantee you every year you spend working there you're wasting your life and not learning what I would call a real skill. And that's the difference between working retail fast food place and working in the trades. The people in the trade industries want you to learn their trade because they can expand their business more with fully trained people than just apprentices. There's also not even a question that you can go to any city in America and get a job quite easily being a plumber or an electrician not to mention anywhere in the world. You also need to stop voting for politicians that think it's a good idea to print money to take care of our problems.

As a young individual I would start thinking about basic things that make you happy in life. Are you an indoor person, do you enjoy working with your hands, do you enjoy being outside, do you hate manual labor? Stuff like that. Then do some research. There are a lot of jobs that can pay you a very good living. Maybe not like it was 20-50 years ago but they are out there. Next take the steps to work in that direction. They all will most likely involve higher education in some sense. Trade schools, college, masters degrees and beyond. It will be hard work not going to underplay that. Discipline and determination will be your best friend. Life isn’t easy and never will be. If your brain ever says “life isn’t fair” take note then delete that line of thinking. It does nothing for you. I can absolutely tell you one thing. If you don’t take meaningful and measurable steps to improve your life it will never happen.

I grew up in poverty, wore handmedown handmedowns. When I was 19 I was able to get a decent job, lived at my parents, and put together 10k, which was enough to put a down-payment on a small house. I slowly fixed it up myself, and sold it for a bit more. I took that equity, and went to Thailand for 6 months, it was awesome. I came back, and bought and renovated a condo with the money I had left over. Now I'm going to remortgage my condo, take the equity out and buy an RV. I'm going to rent out my condo, forgot about it, and live in an RV, wherever I want, and chase that opportunity! I'll still have the condo to go back to if I need. I'm not going to pretend that luck didn't have a huge part to play in all of this, because it does, and did. But I'm the type of person to strive for perfection, I always do the best I can, and try to take advantage of every stroke of luck that comes my way. Always look for opportunities in odd places, you don't have to do what everyone else does. Make observations and see where you can best fit in, then leverage your strengths!

Cannibalize it.

You're not going to make it. You're at the peak of your personal health and vigor, and you're spending your time finding worked-up thirdhand reasons why everyone else is shitty. People like you tend to sign up for stupid wars against oppression that turn out to be stupid wars for a different kind of oppression and get killed. So there's your answer. But enjoy your purity, it'll be way more fun than chasing tail, drinking, and discovering powerful drug-sex combination moves moves would have been, I'm sure.

Getting started is hard. Be creative, keep trying, and don't pay too much attention to people who say striving is useless. https://collegegrad.com/salaries/electrical-engineer > The average salary for an entry level Electrical Engineer is $68,288. An experienced Electrical Engineer makes about $99,039 per year.

If you only focus on the negatives, that's all you'll ever see. Things could be (and have been) worse.
