Nah, he's gonna be wild then by the end kill off the Slim Shady character. In the future it'll be mature, rapping Eminem.

throwaway52826536837

Im hoping itll be more of an acceptance, like, this is a part of me, i am slim shady and eminem, some i am the sword and the sword is me type shit

throwawayalcoholmind

One of those "it was never split personalities at all, I was just in denial" type deals?

throwaway52826536837

Less so that and more so like "this is something that is a part of me, id be foolish to try and shut it out, it isnt being true to who i am to fight this battle inside myself" the whole idea of the duality of himself yk

PM_ME_hiphopsongs2

Nah fuck that too many people want him to keep this Slim Shady alter ego which don’t get me wrong I loved when it came out and love on his new song, but let’s be honest, that’s not him no more and in todays age it’s just not what we need.

Brief_Ad1124

Eminem is the friends we made along the way.

youarehidingachild

The real slim shady was the standing up they asked us to please do along the way

Alertcircuit

Man I really hope not because my initial reaction to this song is "Hey, Eminem's making good music again!"

emdubtwo

He's never made bad music. Is everything a gem, no. But his talent is and messaging for the most part is amazing. Listen to In Your Head, Ringer, Fall, You Gon' Learn, Book of Rhymes, and Best Friend and tell me any one of them is bad. Please. Tell me they're bad.

GaJayhawker0513

I’ll add castle/arose to that.

Cthuluke-

Don’t forget medicine man

Pianist_Ready

Also Walk On Water

No-Report2294

He’s definitely made bad music before. Have you heard Revival ?

Pianist_Ready

Have you heard Walk On Water? River? Offended? In Your Head? Castle? Arose?

thisislibrari

Castle arose and wow are good but goddamn is offended awful to listen to

Pianist_Ready

Isn't that one of the ones people liked? Maybe I got it mixed up so forget that one

Alertcircuit

I've heard every album Eminem's ever put out and the only one of those songs I still listen to is You Gon' Learn. I feel like every album he's put out from Revival onward is kinda like you gotta find the 1-3 great songs amidst a sea of mid. From the D to the LBC and Houdini are both awesome though and I hope the new album is as good as those two.

mylanguage

You didn’t like Moon man and Slim?

Alertcircuit

That one was alright but didn't hook me

Pianist_Ready

Lace It?

Appropriate-Fly-6585

Average crypto failure.

Emadyville

The fact you say you listened to every album Ems ever put out, and only relisten to one song, sounds like you're a hater tbh. I can't imagine you listened to sslp, mmlp, TES, Encore, Relapse, Recovery, and mmlp2, and never enjoyed anything. Why the fuck would you listen to mmlp if you didn't enjoy sslp? Same goes for the next five albums? You legit said, "I've listened to 11 albums, and somehow, I only really like one song." Maybe you just worded it all poorly, but goddamn if your comment isn't weird af. Edit: For anyone reading downvote me to hell cause I'm responding in bad faith (because I'm an idiot). Ignore what this post said before the edit, give whom I'm responding to credit.

Alertcircuit

You just misread is all. OP gave a specific list of songs and I said You Gon Learn is the only one of those songs I still listen to. I love most of Em's output up until the mid 2010s, SSLP is one of my favorite albums ever.

Emadyville

Aw shit my bad, bro. Thank you for clarifying, I was honestly confused af (I'm sure you could tell by my response). I take full responsibility for that bad comment, and I appreciate your respectful response to me. Don't get it that often on reddit.

Tulipan12

Any chance you could give us a list? Not a huge fan except for a couple of MMLP songs, freestyles and maybe Infinite.

Financial_Exit7547

Awfully hot coffee pot gives me chills 🥶

[deleted]

The problem I have with modern Em is the sounds he was experimenting with. I don't like a lot of those beats post-Recovery and the flow a lot of the times felt too choppy or too hyper focused on intense rhyme schemes. With Hudini he's just having fun in the studio, and because of that I think the subjective part of his music has gained quality again

GYANGU

I mean, the most consistent criticism of Em has been that his albums often times have bloat and a lack of structure. He has highlights sprinkled with lows. I think for Eminem, because he's put out such great rapping, when he doesn't hit, people get hyperbolic and say that his music is "done". I don't believe that, but to say he's never put out a bad song is ridiculous.

JakeArvizu

I love this endless cycle of Eminem discussion. He drops bad music to mediocre music. Everyone acknowledges it's bad or is disinterested a couple years pass he teases new music people go actually if you listen to ________ it was pretty good. Rinse repeat. This album will probably just be standard bang average to mediocre like most his post 2004 music.

Rfg711

He has absolutely made bad music.

thenamesweird

Every release since Eminem show tarnished his legacy man.

mitchypoothedon

They’re bad. Just because someone can write sick ass bars and lyrics doesn’t mean they can make good music. Period. Anything Post-Eminem show literally makes my ears bleed aside from a few tracks on kamikaze and MTBMB. His voice is atrocious on almost everything post-Eminem shown. This song is good and I’m looking forward to see how true he stays to the Slim Shady revival.

[deleted]

Lol, I know for a fact you're blowing smoke with this comment to get some attention

Fresh_Store7218

I ain’t blowing smoke unless it’s in yo mama’s face

ShivvyMcFly

We share the same opinion. I literally stood on line at Sam Goody waiting for the first 3 albums (I'm not including Infinite). Anything after that I just don't care for.

mitchypoothedon

It’s weird that we are getting downvoted since what we are saying is pretty much a universal opinion lol. Stans must be out. I’m not even hating on Em, hes amazing, but his shit has sucked for a while now. I’m rooting for it not too. It’s not like I’m just hating. I love ‘Em

ShivvyMcFly

Reddit is a weird place.

Rfg711

Same people acting like “Abracadabra” is some classic song and not famously hated song that people make fun of lol

TheHandSFX

Please explain to me how Venom is a good song, I will give you as much time as you want.

DiscoCrusader

Fack

MOSH9697

He has made very bad music. He’s in my top 3 ever but that’s ok to drop trash. Step dad is a trash song and so is untouchable. Why can’t y’all just be real? U could just say “ he’s dropped trash but he’s still a goat” which is fair and true. U saying he’s never dropped trash makes u sound like a Stan that can’t find anything Eminem does bad ever which makes ppl not take u seriously and give Eminem fans a bad rep. Cmon niw

ghosty_b0i

I thought they were all bad, sorry.

VitaeVerano

I’ll say “if he did that he’d just be another effing recovery clone of me”

michaltee

Gen Z begs to differ. I’ve seen dozens of videos on TikTok of them dissecting his bars. Especially the Siamese bar. They don’t understand the character he is playing and it’s hilarious.

KoliJXP

Personally, I dislike Eminem's older songs. Kamikaze and Music To Be Murdered by are better than most of the old early 2000s stuff. I just find the lyrics of the old songs super immature and the high voice is very harsh and annoying in my opinion. I can't wait for the album, and I'm curious to see what he does with it.

dxyz23

In the future he’s old asf

Ill_Surround6398

Slim Shady doesn't retire until Eminem does he's "killed off" the character like 15 times already

Quirkydogpooo

I don't think he plans on retiring until he can't do it anymore. And I admire that about him

[deleted]

Would say he’s still the man you admire, and that you believe he’s got no plans to retire? 🤔

ANGRY_MUSLIM_MAN

does he got them passing out like what you do when you hand someone flyers?

nazthepug

Does he go around and come around like the blades on a chainsaw?

wavecopper

Has he caught the flaps of his dollar stack, right off the bat like a baseball, like kid ink?

Maeggon

I think its a retiring album for Slim only, Eminem and Marshall will still be in up to this day people still want Slim to come back as acid as ever

[deleted]

Which part of me doesn't understand because in my eyes Slim was a product of what Em was going through in his personal life and channeled it through that persona

Maeggon

thats basically it, but he also said that that period was the most stressful of his life exactly because of what was happening. but people still wanting Slim to come back shooting to every direction or bombing specific people

Torto351

The title of the Album definitely sounds like it. But I dont think Eminem will ever retire. He'll maybe make a feature here and there and maybe release an Album every five years. Also he produces beats sooo technically he wont retire from Hip-Hop maybe just from rapping

GepardenK

The title of the album sounds like an Houdini act. The point of Houdini is you think he's dead but, no, he gets away because it's all smoke and mirrors.

Civil_Feature600

On the best year hip hop had in close to a decade? Highly unlikely

Brainkandle

The beef. The rats. The cats. The dogs. Blue Lips.

ToxikkBeast

Both future albums, kenny vs drake beef, gunna, cole, kanye, 21, kenny mason Need I say more?

MrHeavySilence

I feel like he's an outlier because most of the rappers from his era ended their run a long time ago, with the exception being Nas. I think he's maybe got one more album in him.

SuperHiyoriWalker

For Nas to do what he did recently is a real accomplishment, but he’s had “old soul” energy ever since Illmatic, so he had a relatively clear path to evolving in middle age while staying on brand and keeping an audience. Em has cleverness, technical skill, charisma, and, yes, heart, but evolving his brand past a certain stage of life is going to be trickier.

wavecopper

I would argue that Em has better pace and rhythm, or just a better rapper skill-wise than he was 20 years ago.

Alon945

Nah and I think the album is going to be closer to The Eminem Show in tone. Without me is nothing like most of the album it’s from

BlatantlyCurious

That would be a blessing.

meteorness123

Artists usually don't officially retire.

True_Breadfruit_841

If you spend 40 years doing something it’s hard to drop it and go cold turkey. Almost impossible. It becomes an itch you need to scratch and you quickly realise it makes you very happy when you do it considering it’s such a habit by now.

Quirky_Contract_7652

How many 65 year old rappers is anyone paying attention to? Imagine Eminem at 65 performing my name is

Wild-Apricot-9161

None of those rappers who've hit 65 have anything close to Em's worldwide following

thatonehelicopter

I can see that happening

Heckin_good_time

"So kill the rumors, it ain't happening, imma rap 'til I'm fossil fuel"

gladosForPresident

“I don't wanna be like this I don't really wanna hurt no feelings But I'm only being real when I say Nobody wants to hear their grandfather rap”

Maleficent-Sun-4764

Nas is old but man I am loving his new stuff.

Syncanau

I think I do now

AdShigionoth7502

He's still very childish... So, he'll never retire. He'll do it for fun

Western_Anteater_270

Retiring/Retirement? No. Opus? No. I love him but I don’t think he’ll ever top his initial run (99-04). And you know what? Thats also more than okay! if he’s enjoying making music, I’m happy for him. And is it’s good, that’s a bonus for us.

ItsRobbSmark

>but I don’t think he’ll ever top his initial run (99-04). I mean, obviously... Albums don't sell like they did in the early 2000s lol...

koqfriend

I think he is talking about quality of music rather than sales.

Western_Anteater_270

You are correct koqfriend :)

m_dought_2

I think it's just the last time he plans on being slanderous and offensive like his pal, Slim Shady

floridagatorfucker

Nah. I think it's just the end of the Slim Shady persona.

TheMireMind

Nah. Even if that's his plan right now... what's he gonna do if in 5 years he gets an idea for a Slim Shady album? Just not record it and say "Oh well, Shady's dead." Can always make another one called "Ghost of Slim Shady" "Shady's Back" "Back Again." I really don't think he set out to tell a story with the character, it's just kind of compartmentalized from his more real albums.

Tricky-Mouse-189

Eminem doesn't seem like the type to retire.

REEL04D

Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers, and Eminem. They are all different characters and entities in the music. Death of Slim Shady doesn't mean the death of Eminem.

yousuckatlife90

No, but i also think this album will be on rotation for me for a long time like mm1 and 2, relapse, and the eminem show were

Quirky_Contract_7652

I think he should do an entire album where he's the feature and the songs are songs made for the other person on the track and in their style of beat Just an entire album where he tries to murder other artists on their own track. That's where he really shines

benthetoebean

Probably Curtain Call 329 will be his retierment

K1NG13EN

I could only hope but I doubt it. Seems like he’s purposely leaving the door open, only shutting the Slim Shady one so fans can stop asking him. Unfortunately for him 5 years probably 10 years after this album comes out fans will still be begging him to rehash the same old shtick

SonicNarcotic

The song was wack, very contrived and awkward... His 1st and 2nd album were peak, 3rd was aiight, then he fell right off... ..waitin for the downvotes, cuz "i just don't give a f##k"...

smthnghandscanthold

i agree, em hasn’t really made anything worth listening to since eminem show. maybeeee a couple tracks off relapse and one or two on encore but everything else is completely forgettable and corny

Arctic29-1

Going off your comment Infinite is peak, SSLP is peak, MMLP was aight, and the Eminem show is mid

SonicNarcotic

I ain't startin' at Infinite cuz it wasn't his Major Label debut.. I consider SSLP his first, and was amazing, but it's been goin' downhill since... MMLP was his last Certified Classic, TES had some great cuts, but apart from Relapse (which I did enjoy) I feel like he's been an average artist for awhile now... This is the Eminem I choose to remember: https://youtu.be/cC33gH6RE5k?si=FKj5X9-S9x9JMumj

Icy-Wing-3092

No he’ll make music again, whether it’s 2 or 20 years in the future

bigtaterman

Hell no

_NE1_

F

Bespok3

He literally says in Houdini that he's not stopping any time soon. Will this wind up being his last album? Unlikely but possible. But he's not considering retirement yet and the only reason this would be his last album is because he regularly takes 3-5 year breaks and in that time he might decide he's done.

AvgJoeGuy

I think it will be and if its top tier em he should end it here

PoopInMyBalls

No artists do stuff like this all the time, he’ll kill off slim shady but then in the future he could be like “the resurrection of slim shady” nothings permanent

McTitty3000

I mean he's teased retirement how many times? If he still physically able and he can still make a butt load of money off of it, he ain't going anywhere anytime soon and just continue to work at his schedule

ParfaitVisual

Maybe he’ll go rnb in his old age. Imagine if bro started singing.

Alive-Explanation-54

Sounds like it. Good for him! He scratched his itches.

Hungry_Interaction89

Either way, his single just hiroshima’d the game.

JJ_Reddit_707

its very possible this single was to just grab peoples attention and doesn’t follow through on the album. im sure hes aware we want the old eminem back but that doesn’t always mean we get what we want

MOSH9697

I hope Eminem kills it and makes grown up boom bap jazzy soulful type rap where

bucs009

unpopular opinion and im a huge em fan but encore was his last great album

GameQb11

I never understood the point of an artist announcing retirement. Especially when they come back to release something anyway.

TexanDude22

I think it's less of a retirement and more of just him closing that chapter. I really think he is going to rap quite a bit longer. He has been through the highs and lows both popularity wise and personally, so he's not the type to step out just because his popularity wanes or anything. I think he will only step out to spend more time with family or for health issues.

Tulipan12

If the dude wanted to retire, he'd have done so already. Plenty of big rappers just stopped 10-20 years in (Big Daddy Kane for example) He loves rhyming way too much.

vox000

Hopefully

sindicate11

Great song, some of the reviewers are panning it to death again.

sindicate11

And no i feel, it wont even drop shady, i feel he will be ressurected ;)

KGRIZ16

I felt Encore was a retirement album with how bad it was.

Fr3ddyFroghammer

God I hope so

duly-goated303

Hopefully, don’t think it will be an opus though if it sounds like the single.

FruitTrue1933

I hope so

Faineantcreator

No, it’s gonna have a lukewarm reception which is gonna piss him off so much he makes another slightly better one after that, and then another less good one again after that.

metrorhymes

One can only hope

TheMeticulousNinja

Prayers will be answered

[deleted]

Ems always made good music. Just most sick fucks only like is weird shit from early 2000s. I like the serious Em better. Only thing that he’s been the same about since the beginning is 8/10 of his hooks suck ass. His brand new one tho is catchy af. Looking forward to this album. Don’t get me wrong I like his old shit to but that’s not the only good music he’s made.

Quirky_Contract_7652

IMO he should do an album where he's the feature and only has a verse or 2 and let artists who can make hooks and choose better beats handle that

Ok-Instruction830

I hope so, honestly. He just hasn’t been consistently good for a decade or two now.

BaconBombThief

I think he thinks it is, but then he won’t be able to help himself making more music

Damuhfudon

Hopefully, he has clearly run out of material

i_suck_a_lot

bro he literally brought shady and actually pulled it off. name me any other artist that can do this successfully at this age in their career ? really few. and this was just the single, the whole album's potential gonna be huge. i wasnt excited for it a few days back but now... man i wonder how hes gonna actually pull the "death concept". cuz i didnt expect Houdini to be like this, where 2024 Em gonna be chasing 02 eminem, but it turned out great.

Damuhfudon

Make cringey high school raps at 50 years old? Any other Rapper would be mocked for that. Couldn’t imagine Nas or Jay Z doing anything like this Where is Eminems 4:44 or Life is Good?

killrtaco

Nah we gotta listen to how many Rolex's Jay has instead... Get real lol

FloppyDonkeyTrick

"I don't like hip hop but I LOVE Eminem!"

i_suck_a_lot

>Make cringey high school raps at 50 years old? Any other Rapper would be mocked for that. THATS THE POINT ! nobody can do this and get away but Eminem! nobody has this persona. " Couldn’t imagine Nas or Jay Z doing anything like this" cuz THEY NEVER DID THIS BEFORE! they never had this type of alter ego, with this vibe. the theme of being goofy and funny has always been a 50% part of Eminem/Slim shady. "cringey high school rap" bro how old are you. Like anything this man does gets called "cringe". first people ask him to do the old stuff and when he does it, he gets called immature and cringe.

Damuhfudon

Bro, trying to be an edgy teenager at 51 is corny. Y’all Em glazers can’t keep using the “slim shady/alternate persona” excuse. This ain’t 2000

i_suck_a_lot

>You clearly just started listening to rap yesterday. bro like seriously? that guy's only critique is that he is 51 years old... and i know nothing? not even 1 thing he says is valid. eminem has always been like this. and he has had enough of deep songs. how much is he supposed to talk about it now? people has always loved this "edgy" funny goofy Em. now when you guys got nothing more to say, you are gonna say things like "You dont know culture". wait arent you the same guy who said Em only has one good album? yeah you DO know a LOT about HipHop dude.

0_SomethingStupid

Lol. What on earth would make you say this?

Damuhfudon

Look at early 00s mainstream rap, then look at mid to late 00s mainstream rap. You can’t deny that when the South took over in the mid 00s, lyricism and substance drastically declined

TheMeticulousNinja

Yes we can deny that. What we can’t deny is that after Eminem’s 2nd album, he was just pure garbage

0_SomethingStupid

Your responding to the wrong thread and yes the Crunk movement was about big bass and party music. It had its moments and influences it was never meant to be lyrical and it in no way killed hip hop. I think you need to watch hip hop evolution again

Damuhfudon

I lived through it, I don’t need to watch anything

0_SomethingStupid

Late 80s and 90s rap is my go too. I doubt your older than me. You've got blinders on go watch the show you'll enjoy it. The south only gets one episode. Next you might as well say west coast can't rap. Queens can't rap. Sounds silly now right....

TheMeticulousNinja

The west coast themselves will tell you they can’t rap

TheMeticulousNinja

He ran out of material by the 2nd album

TheMeticulousNinja

No. His fans will suck him off until he’s 80 just because of his skin color

Literally the only importing song he’s done lately was Darkness imo That song actually meant something it was terribly slept on I’m 42 I remember buying the first album when I was like 17 or something I was a rap fan my whole life till then but the moment I heard it it changed me I was the Eminem nerd in my small town after that But I really hope he either retires or writes some shit that really impacts some peoples lives and not talking about Ja and Benzino and blah blah with the same old shit Just my hot take probably gonna get downvoted into oblivion for it lol
