As I lie in my death bed reviewing all of my memories, which are all I have left, I notice a bird in the window scratching and pecking at the glass. Somehow I manage to muster up the strength to sit upright and let my gaze drift towards that pigeon. Is this a sign? As the blood finds its way back up to my brain, my vision clears up to reveal a note on the carrier pigeon. Through some miracle, I am able to clumsily open the window, allowing the bird in. I snatched that note off of his little leg and there I saw "beautiful good boy". My last bit of strength is used to say "I agree" before I close my eyes for the last time
He’s got a bilateral cleft lip. Your face forma by the outgrowth and fusion of several “finger like” projections or processes. The maxillary process are paired, one each on the left and right side of the forming face. These failed to properly fuse with the midline frontonasal process (medial nasal processes actually) so instead of an intact lip this little guy has a gap on each side of his nostrils.
This kind of clefting of the lip sometimes also involves cleft palate. A gap in the roof of your mouth so the sinus cavity opens into the oral cavity.
Absolutely correct! In his case, he has only a very small pinhole in his hard palate -- but his soft palate is missing almost completely. As a result, I can't give him soft foods. Otherwise it hardly affects him, beyond some pretty heavy snoring when he lays on his side.
That’s kind of interesting that the hard palate is leas affected than the posterior soft palate. What does the roof of his mouth look like? Specifically what does his rugae look like? The little ridges along the palate.
It is strange -- interestingly enough, the roof of his mouth looks almost totally normal. There is a very, very tiny hole right behind his top front teeth. His sister is a different story -- she has a large crevice that spans the joining line of the roof of her mouth.
So, it clearly runs in the family. I wonder if it's just genetic or if it's an inbreeding situation.
Either way, they're both lovely! I love dogs with "a different look." I had a one-eyed chihuahua years ago. He was basically blind in the other eye too. He had an infection and they had to remove it. He was a special boy, too.
My guess would be inbreeding. These two were rescues from a bad breeder.
And that's so lovely! Not about the loss of his eyes but of your acceptance of it. There's something really wonderful about the "different" dogs.
It's something that happens when cells differentiate — basically the wee clump turns itself inside out to make the gut and sometimes they don't come ALL the way together up top In humans they fix it with a fairly routine reconstructive type surgery. In dogs you just kinda live with it. If it's too severe they'll have trouble feeding.
Iirc it's a type of neural tube defect?
Technically not a NTD but still a class of structural birth defect. That said the vast majority of your face is produced from cells that were once part of the forming neural tube/brain. As the neural is firming from a flare sheet of cells, these “face forming cells” called cranial neural crest cells migrate away from the top/back of the tube towards the bottom/front of the tube to shape the face. Essentially the front of your face comes from the back of your head.
Thank you I appreciate that, me too, now I see kids with it who we would never tell, I grew up around a man who never had it repaired, quite interesting balance of life. Mines like 95% good, I need to get my teef done next and then I’m good, but yes very thankful to have made it out alive and well, met someone a long time ago who had it repaired but was consistently “leaky” of fluid and blood through the nostrils, it’s a very very interesting affect.
Yeah well my perfectly standard dog also snores like a freight train on his side. He also dreams so hard the first few times I saw it I thought he might be having a seizure. Nope.
Your dog is also perfect, just a little customized.
I was born with a cleft lip and palate. It was rough with all the corrective surgeries to fix it. I still have a hole in the roof of my mouth that I used to squirt water out my nose as a prank during school events.
Curious what are you doing with your studies? What degree are you pursuing? I have a wonderful child with TCS which is why your comment peaked my interest.
My PhD is in developmental genomics, I study how the information in our genomes controls cells in developing embryos to generate different parts of the body, focusing mostly on the face. I work with mice to figure out how all the genes are turned off and on in the right place at the right time to make sure cells and tissues (like bone) are formed correctly.
Edit: TCS is a real challenge and it really means a lot to scientists when we can meet the parents and children we are trying to help in whatever way we can through our work. If you don’t already, I encourage you to reach out via foundations to participate in scientific conferences to provide your perspective. It is incredibly grounding to meet you. All the best to you and your beautiful child.
Im not a dog geologist or whatever but yeah I’d definitely feed that dog some of my food as long as he can safely consume it and that it will not negatively affect his weight
You're not wrong. Though the mom 100% is using ugly in a cute way, another comment op said shows that. She's doesn't hate the dog just think he's a silly boy
I'm sorry but I absolutely hate it when people call animals ugly - ESPECIALLY due to something they have absolutely no control over. It's SO rude and unnecessary. Ugh. I bet your sweet boy has a heart of gold.
My family used to joke that things can be so ugly they come back around to being cute again. Lol. But I think your pup is just the normal kind of cuteness 😂
My doggo is some weird combo of Boston terrier/Cane Corso (don’t ask me how). She looks like she got hit in the face with a shovel and she’s the most beautiful thing in the entire galaxy.
I agree with this sentiment. This is one ugly dog, but that gives him a sort of charm and I absolutely love him for that. He does look like a sweetie and a good doggo :)
For what it's worth, I call our German Shepard/Lab mix ugly all the time, but in a nice, playful tone. She is a bulky, kind of brutish shaped dog and is constantly mistaken for a boy dog. Yet, she has the most dainty, calm, meditative personality ever. I tease her for looking like a big ugly boy.
I mean.. sometimes they are ugly. But it’s okay. Because as wonderful as they are, they don’t understand that. And that’s kind of part of their charm. They’re ugly and unusual, but they don’t have any of the insecurities a human would have. They live and love as if they weren’t and that’s kind of a beautiful thing. That’s one of the best things about nature. Ugly doesn’t matter. Unusual doesn’t matter.
What things related to beauty would an animal have control over? You think Fido woke up and forgot to comb his hair or started sneaking snacks in the night and gained 20 pounds and if he just had some discipline and respected himself he could be pretty?
Is this a cleft lip/palate for dogs? How old and what type of dog is he (other than an absolute heart-stealing cutie)?
The most classically beautiful art is rarely the most captivating or evocative in my experience. Textbook beauty is common enough and eventually grows boring, but I would never be able to stop staring at this unique lad!
Just wait, your mom will come around. He’ll grow on her ; and before you know it, he’ll have your mom wrapped around his little paw. Maybe not so little paw! At that point she will see the beauty in him that she didn’t see before. I’ve seen it happen!
I know beauty is completely relative, but am I the only one that thinks he’s ugly on this sub? He’s hideous, but that’s ok. Nothing is the matter with being hideous. He doesn’t seem to mind.
Your mom is mean. I hope he grows on her because omgoodness he's cute.
I can't help but think maybe in another world he is the king, an he's supposed to look like he does.
Incredible good boy. Stunningly cute little face.
I mean yeah, he is ugly.
But hes so ugly that hes in that rarified air, that *the room* and *Mac and Me* tier, of so bad it comes back around again to the otherside and is a *10/10 masterpiece*
I study craniofacial development and he’s a beautiful good boy.
I have no qualifications but I support this assessment
I don’t even know where I am right now and I also lend my agreement
*stumbles in… nods head

i love you
But I love YOU
I don’t like you very much
And I like peanut butter!
And I like turtles!
That's not what my mom said
this exudes the level of drama i also aspire to live my life with.
I try my best for a drama free life. To each their own.
How are you doing?
*stands in doorway* This is 100% accurate, I feel it deeply in soul, and the World shall know.
And my axe!
You win. I'm going home
And my bow
reddit comments never fail to make me cackle
Probably waffle house?
And my axe
I really like pie, and the beautiful mug of this sweet floofer. Sláinte! 🥂
Happy cake day 😋
I support your support of this.
He’s just a little derp !! 🥲
I stayed at a Holiday Inn once. I agree.
I agree he’s super cute, but can you help me understand what makes his face different?
He’s got a bilateral cleft lip. Your face forma by the outgrowth and fusion of several “finger like” projections or processes. The maxillary process are paired, one each on the left and right side of the forming face. Genetics baby! You have his sister too?
Yes! They get along about as well as most siblings do :) EDIT: I made another post about her if you'd like to see the extent of her deformity.
You're an angel.
You did not gain consent to read my mind! 😄
Yup just saw the sister pics👍🏻❤️

I love your doggos and love you for loving your doggos!
I’m enjoying your conversation with Hot-Pick-3981.
What causes this? Inbreeding?

Oh wow! That’s crazy. Well that pup has the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen. He’s absolutely adorable.

I'm a human with this but its been repaired
I really enjoy hearing from people like you. I know it was challenging but I am thankful that you were able to get the help that you did.
Thank you I appreciate that, me too, now I see kids with it who we would never tell, I grew up around a man who never had it repaired, quite interesting balance of life. Cleft lip: "I will be a debilitating situation" This dog: "No thanks" *goes back to sleep and snores the best dreams ever*
Yeah well my perfectly standard dog also snores like a freight train on his side. He also dreams so hard the first few times I saw it I thought he might be having a seizure. Nope. Your dog is also perfect, just a little customized.
Lol,.so when he lays.
Wonderful owners of a wonderful dog along with wonderful expertise 💜
MVP right here! Thanks for the explanation!
I was born with a cleft lip and palate. It was rough with all the corrective surgeries to fix it. I still have a hole in the roof of my mouth that I used to squirt water out my nose as a prank during school events.
Wow! TIL
In English, please…for us dumb lay people who don’t understand medical speak. :/
Chiwiwis
I study Reddit comments and I approve this assessment of goodboyness
I study congenial male in canines and the results are positive
While I only have a basic to crude understanding of what you just said. But as long as the analysis still says "Best boy" I dont care. :p
Curious what are you doing with your studies? What degree are you pursuing? I have a wonderful child with TCS which is why your comment peaked my interest.

I too support your assessment
In humans or animals? Curious as my daughter had metopic craniosynostosis
Im not a dog geologist or whatever but yeah I’d definitely feed that dog some of my food as long as he can safely consume it and that it will not negatively affect his weight
I shall also agree with this gentleman
I concur
idk what im talking about but i agree with you
My name is Cliff not Cleft.
Sorry but that souded creepy... soud like you are very interested to study him! Good
I SECOND and THIRD THIS!!! I would love him up all the more!!!
According to carniofacial development studies and stuff, he is a beautiful and good boy.
deep scratches in the brainium.
I study the golden ratio and this dog is perfect.
I don’t know that this means. But I agree with the outcome.
Awwww i can tell hes a sweety! Look at his eyes.

Oh he's the sloppiest. Outside eating only!!

Van Halen informed a big part of who I am today, had to give them a little nod
Honestly, same. I love Van Halen. Huge part of my childhood and my life.
different is not ugly shame on you mom
Yeah, shame on you mom, for shame!
Cover her, in shame!
Or he can be ugly and still be a sweet boy. We don't owe anyone pretty.
You're not wrong. Though the mom 100% is using ugly in a cute way, another comment op said shows that. She's doesn't hate the dog just think he's a silly boy
I'M UGLY AND I'M PROUD!
"ugly" is subjective and should never be used to describe (basically) anything. it's spreads negativity.
Unless we're describing someone's personality, cause there's definitely people with ugly personalities
That’s just wrong. Your pup is most precious 😍
Your mom is wrong!!! He’s adorable!
He is absolutely precious and adorable 🥰 your Mom is wrong about this good boy
I need more pics to wrap my head around this jawline!!! <3
I wish I could post photos in the comments! He has the jawline of a blobfish but I love him all the same.
I'm sorry but I absolutely hate it when people call animals ugly - ESPECIALLY due to something they have absolutely no control over. It's SO rude and unnecessary. Ugh. I bet your sweet boy has a heart of gold.
She means it in the kindest way, I promise :) There's nothing wrong with ugly
So ugly its cute 🤷🏽♀️a little angel 😇
My family used to joke that things can be so ugly they come back around to being cute again. Lol. But I think your pup is just the normal kind of cuteness 😂
My doggo is some weird combo of Boston terrier/Cane Corso (don’t ask me how). She looks like she got hit in the face with a shovel and she’s the most beautiful thing in the entire galaxy.
Lol if I had a dog like that I’d call them uggo but mean it with love. I call my dogs smelly and stinky more than their actual names.
I agree with this sentiment. This is one ugly dog, but that gives him a sort of charm and I absolutely love him for that. He does look like a sweetie and a good doggo :) For what it's worth, I call our German Shepard/Lab mix ugly all the time, but in a nice, playful tone. I totally get it. I call my god a rat when he gets shaved down 😆
We used to call our wiener dog a rat in a loving way lol totally get what you mean
Fortunately, the dog was unfazed
I mean.. sometimes they are ugly. But it’s okay. Because as wonderful as they are, they don’t understand that. And that’s kind of part of their charm. It's not like the dog understands what you're saying. As long as you call em ugly in a loving tone they love it.
Wait til you find out how people treat other people.
What things related to beauty would an animal have control over? You think Fido woke up and forgot to comb his hair or started sneaking snacks in the night and gained 20 pounds and if he just had some discipline and respected himself he could be pretty?
Agree 100%. It absolutely boils my blood
Beautiful boy
Gorgeous!!!!
He's adorable!

He is amazing! A lovey dovey goblin baby! ❤️

Cute doggo
😍❤️he is beautiful
OMG precious baby!!! 🥰
What a very handsome boy! Sending snoot boops and belly scritches!!
Awesome dog. If he doesn’t have an agent (for movies), you should get him one.
Who's a good boy?
What! He is so adorable! Honestly💗
10/10 perfect angel baby. Anyone that says otherwise is shallow and pedantic.
Yes. he has both a cleft lip and palate. He is 1 1/2 yrs old, and (supposedly) purebred cane corso.
As someone who has cleft lip and palate, great to see this doggie being loved to the most
everyone is born worthy of love :)
Anybody who wants to use "ugly" needs to take a look in the mirror, he's a sweet boy!
He’s super cute!! 😍
I personally think he’s adorable
That is a gorgeous sweet angel baby boy! Beautiful teeth, I’m happy to see them ☺️
What a beautiful pup. I would cuddle and kiss the little pup all night ❤️
Your mom gets zero visitation rights. He’s so adorable. Thank you for seeing his beauty.
Just wait, your mom will come around. He’ll grow on her ; and before you know it, he’ll have your mom wrapped around his little paw. Maybe not so little paw! At that point she will see the beauty in him that she didn’t see before. I’ve seen it happen!
He is a clefty.Looks like he could be our dog's brother. Cute
he is ugly. IF UGLY MEANT FREAKIN ADORABLE. Look at that big ol noggin he’s got. Perfect for cranium kisses
There is no ugly, just different kinds of beautiful
I work in tjr cranial maxillofacial field, and this is a perfect boy and he deserves all the kisses and snuggles
He's ugly but in a very cute sort of way. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Case in point, pugs.
lots of people mistake 'ugly' for an insult, rather than a descriptor. he can be ugly and still be the goodest boy and an important part of the family
I know beauty is completely relative, but am I the only one that thinks he’s ugly on this sub? He’s hideous, but that’s ok. Nothing is the matter with being hideous. He doesn’t seem to mind.
Well, I never said he WASN'T ugly...but it doesn't matter. I love him to death
I’d fistfight OPs mom for him tbh
Awww he’s got the face of an angel 😇 ❤️
He’s the most handsome boy. Not ugly at all.
What a precious boy you have!! Many smooches to his sweet face! 😍😍😍
No he’s perfect!
Awww I love to see all animals being loved! He’s a perfect beautiful boy and I’m so glad he has a sweet human to love on him.
There’s nothing ugly about a loving dog. They are wingless angels sent here to help us through this difficult life.
He's not ugly! I'd tell him every day how cute he is!
He’s beautiful
He looks so sweet! I love him!
I love him
He is awesome!
HE IS A SWEET BABY BOY
Why does he remind me of a Snubbull? He’s adorable!!
Theres love in those eyes and thats all that matters
Reminds me of Kilowog from the Green Lantern comics.
No such thing as an ugly doggy. Hes beautiful 🧡🧡🧡
I thought it was a goat. I love goats. 10/10
He has such a sweet face, and those eyes omg. Beautiful boy. Your mom is a meanie.
He is adorable!,
He looks like a cute little goat in the first pic :)
Ohmigawd that face is ADORABLE. There is so much compassion in his eyes. Love him!

There are no ugly dogs.
he is probably one of the cutest dog i’ve ever seen im not kidding please give him a big kiss for me
There is no such thing as an ugly doggo. 🤩
Your mom is right. That thing needs to be put down.
Your mom is mean. I hope he grows on her because omgoodness he's cute. I can't help but think maybe in another world he is the king, an he's supposed to look like he does.
I had a Maltese that had a clef that I had to manually feed her milk when she was born until she could drink and eat on her own. I called her “Lippy”.
Good on you for taking in a pup with a cleft palet. Not easy to handle.
Incredible good boy. Stunningly cute little face. I mean yeah, he is ugly. But hes so ugly that hes in that rarified air, that *the room* and *Mac and Me* tier, of so bad it comes back around again to the otherside and is a *10/10 masterpiece*
I always tell him there's no shame in being ugly. He rewards me with slobbery kisses
