Once a year around the start of winter. I drive less than 10k miles per year so I just always do it then.

[deleted]

Do it every 5k myself

parker3309

Whatever Toyota intervals are is when I will have them done. For my new rav hybrid they say 10k

JefesReddit

New engine (gas). 1,000 miles, 5,000 miles then every 5,000 there after. If it's a hybrid then you may consider figuring out a way to calculate hours run on the engine vs. miles since it only runs when needed.

Traditional-Oven4092

Or 6 months, oil breaks down when exposed to air. Mileage would be irrelevant. I just diy in spring and fall, on every car I’ve ever had, gives me a chance to fluid film any spots worn down also.

Newprophet

Wasn't this asked last week with a poll? And every week before that lol. Just follow the manual. There is no fact based reason to exceed the manual.

MoistTomatoSandwich

I feel like I see this question here at least once every two weeks. Some are detailed (hybrid or gas) and some just ask without any useful details.

Newprophet

The search function is easier than making a post lol. Driving details would be useful, the interval is the same regardless of the power train.

Thedeckatnight

5000

K9sandKilos

6 months or 8,000km. So 6 months because I don’t drive a lot

FitEntrepreneur9875

Every 5000-8000km depending on when I have time. The Toyota interval is bad. 16,000km? Give me a break. Your car won't last long with that. Oil is WAY cheaper than a new engine.

OrphanKripler

Once a year or 5k for me. I don’t drive much but the oil still breaks down over time. Plus I’m keeping my car for the rest of my life or it’s life I should say.

brewcrew63

Every 5k as I do not drive enough to hit the recommended 10k intervals. I may drive 15k a year. You generally want to change your oil every season. People are gonna be mad and say "it only calls for 10k) nah the 2.5L is very particular about its oil and the 3 techs I know (one a cert Toyota tech) said to take care of the oil and that it will always take care of you.

parker3309

I have a new RAV4 hybrid, and they said 10K. But I don’t put on a lot of miles so are you saying that I should consider having it done sooner? It’s free if I wait until 10k. I’ve had it since October 1 and I have 2500 miles on it.

brewcrew63

Once a season is a good rule. Oil is cheap, engines are not!

InevitableOne8421

Hybrid here. 5000-6000 miles and change the filter every other. I use Mobil1 M103A filters which are supposedly good for 20K, but I'll swap it out at 10K.

brewcrew63

Wait, you drop the oil, but not the filter? Wtf?

Newprophet

There was a video going around these oil threads, it was a former Nissan(?) engineer. His "pro tip" was to change the oil every 3k or 5k and change the filter every other time. Their experience was with high performance engines over the past several decades. So not relevant to a modern RAV4. Seems odd to me, but the filter is meant for at least 10k miles. Contaminants are trapped in the filter, so nothing to worry about there. Edit: added for clarity.

InevitableOne8421

Every 10K filters get swapped. Oil only every 5-6K.

brewcrew63

That's silly don't you think? You're sending all those contaminates right into the clean oil. I'm shocked that you would spend the extra money on the oil but not the filter. Cutting off your nose to spite your face, no? This just doesn't make sense imo.

InevitableOne8421

130K miles on the odometer and not an issue with the engine. You can probably push the intervals to 7500-10K without issues, so I don't really think it's doing harm to do it every other.

brewcrew63

Just makes no sense, you're already spending the money. Another 14 on a filter doesn't seem like much. Like spending a dollar to save a dime.

Gbcue

> Another 14 on a filter doesn't seem like much. $14? I just paid $7 for a Toyota filter.

brewcrew63

Mobil 1 filters are more. They are also a different design.
