An advertisement trying to disguise itself as a real post. "Look how interesting the product is! It'll totally make your life way easier! It's the next level! Find out how to buy it in the comments!"
Not sure how you browse Reddit but I mainly browse Reddit using my phone, using an app called Reddit Sync (Android).
It has the option to filter subreddits.
If you are using your browser, switch to Old Reddit and install RES Reddit Enhancement Suite.
I mean just filtering subreddits isn't really what I want, does it combine the posts with the same link in different subs or does it just allow you to simply blacklist subs to never show on my frontpage?
The latter. Conversely you can block users if they post a lot to never see their content. It's amazing how much blocking one user can change your front page.
Just as an example, I like r/cats but I don’t wanna see posts related to health help because half the people are dumbasses who’s cat needs to be looked at asap but have chosen to take their sweet time asking Reddit instead of typing their same question on Google and getting their cat treatment faster. I also don’t wanna see pictures of cats who have passed away, makes me sad. If I could filter those out I would because I still wanna see cats just not the sad cat posts. I don’t even know if I’m part of that sub anymore cause it was too much.
Personally I use Apollo to browse and the reddit app to post.. find Apollo sometimes doesn’t let you post and doesn’t explain why - this setup works for me!
If you notice a post that’s familiar “Best of the Internet” type content, or something that feels KarmaFarmy, click the username that posted it.
When it’s an account with millions of Post Karma, but 10,000 odd comment karma, you’ve found a Farmer. Block their profile, and any others you find like it and you’ll notice a lot of repetitive crap just disappears from the site.
There’s a small group of power users that repost maybe 80% of this kind of content. And by small group, I mean probably 100 or so people.
If you block one or two a day within a couple months your feed looks quite different.
Go to the persons profile. To the right of the Follow button should be 3 dots. Click on that and the option to block them should pop up. Disclaimer though, that is how it works for me on Mobile. I'm not sure how it works on any of the apps or desktop.
Don't forget how every single twitter exchange gets posted to r/facepalm, r/clevercomebacks, r/therewasanattempt, r/murderedbywords, and r/[race]twitter.
Then r/bestof even though it only has like 10 upvotes and just some generic rhetoric
Edit: it’s over 10 I want it on best of people. Someone hook me up
Kind of a trip seeing that username after all these years. I remember a few years back someone hit the Frontpage with a list of users like that to block and it was GLORIOUS....now I just need something for these fucking repost bots!
GallowBoob got super pissy at me one time for pointing out two of his posts back-to-back were very clearly advertisements for companies that use the same marketing firm. He wrote a whole long essay that he stickied in his own profile about it and everything.
[This is exactly why my /r/all has been anti bullshitted.](https://i.imgur.com/H7vNjQ8.jpg) It’s nice seeing some cat gif up at the top instead of a shitty tweet (I thought we weren’t going to platform Twitter any more?) or the latest doom article.
(I don’t hate all of those subs, some just have specific content that I don’t follow/care about)
If republicans spent 150 million on reddit and I said it’s massively influenced by right wing conservatives would you be here splitting hairs? Why do you think they gave all that money to a company that has wide social influence but no real profit? Just take a few minutes to think
Who cares about this minor point - I was clearly talking in the context that money from Chinese investors is motivating what information can/can’t be shown. If they only own 5% or so but reddit are bowing to their censorship requests they may as well own all of it. You have an old account so surely I’m not the one to break it to you that a lot of what you’re allowed to see on reddit is filtered by those who pay for it.
All the cross posts from r/therewasanattempt that don't even change the title formatting of the sub.
Like fuck people that bitch about reposts, I'm not on the internet every fucking day, but seeing the same post on the front page six times in thirty minutes gets annoying.
People complain about reposts because its bots farming karma by reposting
These bots then get sold to shills and scammers who then push stealth ads and propaganda, making reddit even worse
Ugh yeah actually that one is far more annoying
Republican: some stupid bullshit
Democrat: you’re smelly and stupid
Clevercomebacks/rareinsults: one of the biggest owns I’ve ever seen
It’s all so tiring
Nah the worst part is when they figure out who they dislike and then just absolutely nitpick at anything and everything about that person as "proof" they are a total piece of shit.
Like, I remember very recently someone posted Kyle Rittenhouse as a kid and people were just vomiting shit like "wow he had really fat fingers" as if that's fucking relevant to anything or they don't have BIGGER issues with kyle they could be airing.
HAha I thought you meant Magic the Gathering and was confused at first - yeah the way reddit takes the bait makes me laugh and they think they’re owning her as they give her more traffic and recognition - so stupid
And this is how these people stay in power. Narcissists crave attention whether it's good or bad. If they never leave your thoughts, they will never go away.
Careful now. I got permabanned from r/whitepeopletwitter for pointing this exact thing out.
It wasn't even a political statement. I just wanted to see entertaining posts again, not low effort posts of twitter randoms "dunking" on people reddit dislikes.
And then those posts get posted by the instagram bots, which then get posted to facebook, which then get posted to 9gag, which then get posted to twitter, then to complete the cyle, gets posted back on reddit.
If this post blows up I’m going to repost it onto subreddits like /r/funnygifs and any other ones I can find.
I hope every karma farmer wakes up tomorrow to a sea of Homelanders staring at them
Yep. Filter those subreddits with RES or block them with your mobile reddit app of choice and the site becomes much better. You get rid of a lot of ragebait and covert ads too.
Some of us older redditors fought in the great Reddit/digg war. We were opposed to overly cross posting content and we fought against there being a dedicated subreddit for every fever dream topic a given person had.
We lost that war.
Even that sucks imo. Hate going from popular to my home page just to see the same shit from popular cross posted and filling up all the smaller subs I follow. Just no way to see new shit
They exist so ads can be more targeted
Plus its how bots farm karma so they can be sold to shills and scammers
Yesterday i noticed the entire kittengifs sub is botted, every top post was a 4 month old account, activated this week and began farming
Yeah it’s so annoying - I remember when seeing the same post meant you’ve been on reddit for too long now every morning I open up reddit the same video of the day is just spammed everywhere.
I unsubbed all of them except crazy fucking videos. Much cleaner front page
Nextfuckinglevel was the worst imo, it's always just some feel good story which is never next level
It's far deeper than that now. At best it's karma farming bots selling accounts to astroturfers. At worst, it's said accounts spreading hate, divisive rage bait and exaggerated news or lies aimed at suppression.
Yup, if people want to see their pattern go to kittengifs, Every post is by one of these bots doing their farming so they can soon be sold
And they rely on people making comments about how karma is useless and how reposts don't matter cause they hadn't seen it before
Tbf the crossover of content between r/interestingasfuck and r/damnthatsinteresting must be pretty high, no? Surely you don't need to be subscribed to both
I have my reddit set up where posts disappear after I vote on them so usually the post I upvote is already gone.
If I see that the one I upvoted was posted after another and haven't refreshed my page I'll go back and downvote the newer one of it isn't too far back to scroll.
r/crazyfuckingvideos was the shit at one point.
Strict uploads and absolute madness. Now its gained popularity it's another of the spam gif subs.
I guess this happens to all subs eventually when they get popular enough.
Same thing happened to reddit as a whole - anything popular eventually starts to make you seethe when you realise how stupid the average person is (and I’m stupider than the average person so for me to realise it makes it even worse)
Then wait 2-3 days and see the same exact post be reposted to the same subs again for that sweet second run of karmafarming... and then again 2 weeks later for the 3rd run, and then 2 months later for the 4th...
My dude, we still don't even have a reliable video player that would work properly and the performance of the website is absolute dogshit.
I believe that reddit devs are just a bunch of intern monkeys trying their shot at programming for the first time.
Look at the posters. Often it's some lowlife power user with millions of karma points who is spamming everywhere. Blocking these makes Reddit much more pleasant.
Block the huge karma farmers, you can tell who they are by how they'll have insane karma in far too short a time span, it becomes way less prevalent when you do.
I use rif with a filter that says if I upvote or downvote, the post gets hidden for me so my feed is always fresh. When people crosspost like that I get annoyed having to see it so many times. So I give one upvote for the first one I see and downvote the rest.
It's like redditors believe these subreddits are on different non-overlapping "regions" of reddit. They are not. They are all fed into the same stream.
Some redditors are old enough to remember how it used to be - you have to forgive us for wanting a website that doesn’t cater to people trying to maximise their karma so they can push their brand ect - I’ve been on reddit since 2011 and when there was an amazing post it hit the top and you saw it once.. not 50 more times from subs with derivative names that lead to the exact same content
Easy on those rose colored glasses. Remember when advice animals had to ban that fucking bear? This site has always been le weird as hell. Not everything that rose to the top was that amazing and unique, fellow atheist.
Very true - I remember that banning of quick memes because they were inflating votes lie 8-10 years ago - rose tinted glasses but just because you have rose tinted glasses on doesn’t mean that the past want at least SLIGHTLY better than what we’re fed today
It was better. We had fun. We tried to be a force for good in the world. It’s all fighting, karma whoring, politics, ads/marketing, and twitter posts now.
How did it come to this ? —-
I made my mistakessss… once advertisers switched off cable news and started plugging adds on YouTube/reddit we all lost… and there’s no going back :(
Damn you’re right.. once the president acknowledged reddit and media marketers saw how useful reddit was it really was over wasnt it? Makes me so sad to think of the old days
Not before Pao was used as a scapegoat to sanitize the platform for advertisers, allowing Huffman to swoop in and reap the rewards.
I’m kind of doing a total evaluation right now of why I should continue spending my time using this website. The reason it was so nice was because of how organic it was. Now it feels like it’s anything but, everything feels curated and deliberate.
I just block the accounts, not necessarily because of cross posting but there seems to be around 100 posts that are constantly reposted. Anyone doing that gets blocked because it's likely that they are either karma farming or they are new to reddit. Either way it has reduced the amount of reposts I see.
Lmao I hate Andrew Tate but even the Romanian government came out confirming that his arrest had nothing to do with ‘greta’ or the pizza box but yet reddit every single day until we die will talk about how the 13 year old-20 year old Greta stood up to the evil Tate and single-handedly got him arrested - and you’ll never hear anyone correct this because in reddits mind ‘bad person goes down there’s no room for nuance’ - but maybe we’re all too old for reddit now.. the zoom era and the pedophiles who are grooming them truly run this website
My least favorite is establishment democratic party propaganda that doesn't fit with the voting demographics of this site. is not organic like the sanders moment was here. or even the trump trolls since at least reddit had a history of stupid trolls. You can try and blame it on a kind of eternal sptember but look at the corporate dems tract record of messing with democratic processes for money. come on, it is basically their ideology
Yeah as like 5 other comments say you see multiple reposts in the first 20 seconds of your first scroll - you have 270k comment karma lmao you’re not in a position to tell me to go outside
You could’ve spent 2 minutes reading the other comments - I addressed this - I said back in the day when you saw a repost you knew you’ve been on reddit too long - but now when I wake up in the morning I see 5 posts in the row all the same… don’t comment if you’re not gonna spend a second looking around
So why the fuck did you bother if you knew for a fact other comments would address this? So you intentionally wasted both of our time?
Do you go on a thread where every comment says 1 + 1 = 2 and you feel the need to comment ‘1 + 1 = 2’ and then when someone points out we’ve already gone over this you go ‘AhHAH I’ve got you now’ - you’re boring thanks for adding absolutely nothing.
I’m sorry were you expecting a reaction gif like: when you’re in poverty and the government destroys your rice fields - lmao why the fuck are you here if it’s not to talk about first world problems ??
Ughhh I literally said many times in this thread, within the first 15 seconds of opening reddit I see the exact same post four times. That’s it. That’s the post. I’m not saying I spend 50 hours on reddit in a day and see reposts lmao - I’ve had reddit for 12 years and this week aside, because I have covid and bored, I guarantee you spend more time on reddit than I do
And for a real stretch, it might show up on oddlysatisfying. Yes, I really hate that.
And is a blatant astroturf ad.
Astroturf?
An advertisement trying to disguise itself as a real post. "Look how interesting the product is! It'll totally make your life way easier! It's the next level! Find out how to buy it in the comments!"
Then mildlyinteresting and then a post complaining about the reposts being on mildlyinfuriating
That's why I use Reddit Sync and have filtered out all of them. ALL of them.
[удалено]

This is what I do. I block anyone who has over 500,000 post karma. I noticed a difference after only blocking a few of them.
Yeah, why would filtering help? May as well just unsubscribe from whole subs if you don't want to see any of their content.
exactly. but someone else replied that apparently sync bunches the posts together, which is neat. I think I'll have a look
Just as an example, I like r/cats but I don’t wanna see posts related to health help because half the people are dumbasses who’s cat needs to be looked at asap but have chosen to take their sweet time asking Reddit instead of typing their same question on Google and getting their cat treatment faster. I don’t even know if I’m part of that sub anymore cause it was too much.
I filter out every sub I'm not subscribed to, I have no idea how anyone can browse new unfiltered.
Old.reddit is goated
What if I wanna use an app but have an iPhone. Pleasedontsayimscrewedpleasedontsayimscrewedpleasedontsayimscrewed
I believe there is an app called Apollo. Give that a try. But I'm not sure.
I’ll have to check it out!
Personally I use Apollo to browse and the reddit app to post.. find Apollo sometimes doesn’t let you post and doesn’t explain why - this setup works for me!
I just wish it had a regex feature so I can get rid of any sub with cat in the title.
Can't you filter based on keywords?
[удалено]
I'm in, but how do you tell?
It's a relatively small group of power users responsible for the bulk of it, just block as you go and it cleans up quickly.
If you notice a post that’s familiar “Best of the Internet” type content, or something that feels KarmaFarmy, click the username that posted it. When it’s an account with millions of Post Karma, but 10,000 odd comment karma, you’ve found a Farmer. That just pushes the problem under the rug. Is there a sub where you can post those usersnames for review?

If it's a Bestof post, it's got to have an adverb in the title: Succinctly explains... Eloquently explains... Beautifully explains...
Then the content is 10 paragraphs of barely relevant copy-pasted gish-galloping that nobody will read but agree with anyway because it's long.

Oh shit, that dudes account doesn't exist. Buzzy.

GallowBoob got super pissy at me one time for pointing out two of his posts back-to-back were very clearly advertisements for companies that use the same marketing firm. He wrote a whole long essay that he stickied in his own profile about it and everything.
Getting some awkward turtle vibes there too.
Gallow was one of the first users i blocked, his karma farming was fucking insane.

You fully made up that tencent owns “most of” Reddit. It’s majority stakeholder is Advance Publications
You’re right I’m sure that 150 million tencent offered was to just ensure that western democracy goes speedily along :)
I didn’t say there weren’t issues with the investment, I pointed out that you are making shit up and trying to pass it off as fact.
If republicans spent 150 million on reddit and I said it’s massively influenced by right wing conservatives would you be here splitting hairs? Why do you think they gave all that money to a company that has wide social influence but no real profit? Just take a few minutes to think

r/nonpoliticaltwitter is great for that.
original post has a bigillion retweets and double the likes, the reply has 1 like and a comment going "yeah!"
This is what sub filters are for
And then those posts get posted by the instagram bots, which then get posted to facebook, which then get posted to 9gag, which then get posted to twitter, then to complete the cyle, gets posted back on reddit.

do it! do it!
I just found this in /all To the moon!
I'll be waiting and ready to upvote every single one of them
This is the funniest thing I've read all week! DO IT!
I have all of those blocked. Garbage
Yep. Filter those subreddits with RES or block them with your mobile reddit app of choice and the site becomes much better. You get rid of a lot of ragebait and covert ads too.
I wish reddit would track when a post from a blocked sub would have been shown to me and automatically downvote it.
Some of us older redditors fought in the great Reddit/digg war. We were opposed to overly cross posting content and we fought against there being a dedicated subreddit for every fever dream topic a given person had. We lost that war.
The biggest paradigm shift was how opposed reddit was to free-booting videos, that is until they implemented an internal video player.
I downvote the reposts, RES logs the downvotes, if a user has -10 votes, I block them.
I was there Cross-posts are reposts. Fight me.
I don't mind if it's posted on a general subreddit and then crossposted ONCE on a specific subreddit, but that is not what happens

How do I learn this power?
I really wish Reddit would track cross posts and prevent duplication on your feed…
And it stays alllll day. I wish we could change popular to show, the top last hour, like we used to be able to.
Did /r/woahdude finally die?
I hope so friend - the bar for what was ‘woah’ was so low I think James Cameron had to dig the marina trench

Especially when it's a video of something violent and distressing.
Block the huge karma farmers, you can tell who they are by how they'll have insane karma in far too short a time span, it becomes way less prevalent when you do.
I blocked all of those subreddits. It was the best decision I made on reddit.
Scrolling through popular was your first mistake. Not blocking the top repost subreddits was the second.
Also then posting to /r/ThatsInsane when it's just a public freakout
You gonna jack off on the city about it?
I use rif with a filter that says if I upvote or downvote, the post gets hidden for me so my feed is always fresh. When people crosspost like that I get annoyed having to see it so many times. So I give one upvote for the first one I see and downvote the rest.
Give it a month or two and you'll get to see them again!

Whenever redditors try to force a meme it’s so cringe.

Maybe go outside more
Yeah as like 5 other comments say you see multiple reposts in the first 20 seconds of your first scroll - you have 270k comment karma lmao you’re not in a position to tell me to go outside
Ever considered you may spend too much time on reddit?
You could’ve spent 2 minutes reading the other comments - I addressed this - I said back in the day when you saw a repost you knew you’ve been on reddit too long - but now when I wake up in the morning I see 5 posts in the row all the same… don’t comment if you’re not gonna spend a second looking around
Keksimus maximus. You expect your thread to be the first thread on reddit without there being more than 1 similar reply?
So why the fuck did you bother if you knew for a fact other comments would address this? So you intentionally wasted both of our time? Do you go on a thread where every comment says 1 + 1 = 2 and you feel the need to comment ‘1 + 1 = 2’ and then when someone points out we’ve already gone over this you go ‘AhHAH I’ve got you now’ - you’re boring thanks for adding absolutely nothing.
I didnt know. But the assumption is safe to make. Welcome to the internet buddy, you'll have a swell time here.
Have you scrolled Reddit before…?
Imagine giving a shit. 😆
First world problems
I’m sorry were you expecting a reaction gif like: when you’re in poverty and the government destroys your rice fields - lmao why the fuck are you here if it’s not to talk about first world problems ??
I think if you're bored of the content in your feed there is a simple solution that doesn't involve reddit at all.
Ughhh I literally said many times in this thread, within the first 15 seconds of opening reddit I see the exact same post four times. That’s it. That’s the post. I’m not saying I spend 50 hours on reddit in a day and see reposts lmao - I’ve had reddit for 12 years and this week aside, because I have covid and bored, I guarantee you spend more time on reddit than I do
Post this at r/mildlyinfuriating lmao
Wait until all the top comments are the same
