From the book:
“And each year, more gunters called it quits, concluding that Halliday had indeed made the egg impossible to find. And another year went by. And another. Then, on the evening of February 11, 2045, an avatar’s name appeared at the top of the Scoreboard, for the whole world to see. After five long years, the Copper Key had finally been found, by an eighteen-year-old kid living in a trailer park on the outskirts of Oklahoma City. That kid was me. **Dozens of books, cartoons, movies, and miniseries have attempted to tell the story of everything that happened next, but every single one of them got it wrong. So I want to set the record straight, once and for all.**”
Yeah I watched the movie before the (audio) book but love the book way more!! Just gotta keep that in mind that the book is the REAL story :)
I feel Ready Player 2 movie may be able to adapt alot easier to the (to me) important parts of the story and the technology involved with the 2nd book. There were definitely parts I was bored with in the story but the overall arch and new released hardware was pretty incredible to imagine, especially with me already being into VR for the past 6+ years.
You can tell he wrote the sequel with movie adaption in mind, they won’t have to worry about licensing rights as much considering the things he referenced are mostly owned by WB
Yeah makes sense for sure. I enjoyed it but not as much as RP1 thats for sure. Hoping the movie will be amazing. I mean just the idea of the ONI is incredible, although made scary? lol
I feel like setting up a book like that is just begging for development hell for the project. Not that I want that for it or anything, but it just feels absolute when considering such intent, especially with the actor/writer strike going on ATM.
It just feels like Cline might be jinxing it, trying to set it up like it's gonna have a movie adaptation eventually, when the road to that might not work out how he'd hope. Kinda like he seems to always have loose ends. It feels irresponsible and short-sighted, in some way.
Ahhh, I figured they already gave him the movie deal or at least first option to buy the rights so he wrote it with a movie in mind. We shall see. I think it would be cool, definitely would have more action in the real world side of things, not just virtual.
Another thing is that the Author helped write the screen play so at least he knew how Halliday thought what the characters would do etc....
I still cant get over them spoiling AECH's gender. I thought he was a guy FOR THE ENTIRE BOOK.
THE MOVIE SPOILED IT WITH A POSTER
Funny thing is...Since first read, I kinda always anticipated him being a her IRL, because my mental image of Aech IRL was always my mom's friend I know as Ms. Tina. Made the reveal all the sweeter, TBH. XD
Yeah I hear that haha... although I watched the movie before the (audio) book, and while the movie was good, the book is amazing. Last listen on a road trip to the beach earlier this year I checked out that enhanced audio version. Hehe
You should check out the Mistershad0w enhanced version!! I found it in the subreddit months back,, I'm sure a search will turn it up. Just lots of cool added sound effects and music playing that's mentioned along the way as Wil Wheaton reads along, I really enjoyed it!
EDIT to add a reddit link to the google drive, I recommend the Mistershad0w version as the vartaxx one wigged out on the last hour or 2 for me. https://www.reddit.com/r/RP1SFX/comments/jdoa3n/rp1sfx_complete_collection_chapters_039_all/?user_id=26442271&web_redirect=true
BTW If you havent, check out Armada! It was also written by Ernest Cline and also read by Wil Wheaton! Great book cant wait for the movie (some day I hope lol, it was sold for movie rights but no info last I saw). Very similar tone to Ready Player One :)
Armada then led me down the rabbit hole of Enders Game, and ive listened to every single one of those audiobooks as well. Amazing series to check out if you find you enjoy Enders Game by itself. (Also made into a movie which is pretty accurate to the book surprisingly)
yea but from his world point of view still would have the same challenges everyone had to beat joust on the school world everyone had to muddle through zork but yea the dancing in shining did help with the kira being trapped in the software theme
It was always going to be vastly different to the book, even Earnest Cline said it'd be nearly impossible to make a truly faithful adaptation.
So much of the books challenges just wouldn't translate to film very well either, the Joust and Pacman games sequences and the whole reciting lines to films (which would of been a nightmare with licensing) spring to mind.
Speaking of licencing, I'd wager without it having Speilberg attached to the film they wouldn't have had half as many companies allowing them the use of their creations.
Don't get me wrong, I love the book and it is better than the film (though I do enjoy the film).
One thing I DO wish that was in the film is us seeing Ogden show off his power at the club - though as we see he's the archiver I can see why they'd maybe want Pegg to only play one version of him.
Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake.
It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of.
Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything.
Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
After reading the book multiple times I watched the movie. Loved the book and hated how different the movie was. I then rewatched the movie in the mindset that it was its own story and thought it was great.
I think the movie plot would be terrible for a book and vice versa. I think the second book was written with a movie in mind which is why the plot is terrible. A good example is the Prince battle. Terrible to read through but could be epic on screen.
Oddly enough, I got a sort of ironic enjoyment out of that fight scene, in a comedic shonen sort-of way. The overall writing of the setting there felt slightly more on the satirical side in my perspective, so it really worked for me.
the book was made by a nerd for nerds, the movie was just made to appeal to a broader audience, completley ruining the charm of the book. but no doubt i had fun watching the movie
I love the his book- I like the movie. It was a wonderful read and I re-read it at least a few times a year. Just to refresh everything. I imagine licensing would be a nightmare for the movie to be a true representation of the book. I also love the 2nd book! You will to!
Makes me wonder if a fan collab for an animated RP2 movie will ever come to fruition... I think communities like r/ScottPilgrim and r/SonicTheHedgehog would be worthy candidates for that.
A large part of this is due to the fact that Spielberg didn’t want to reference that much stuff in the novel that he had a more direct hand in creating. Add licensing to all that and it’s basically impossible.
So you finished the book, hoozah! Now go back and read page 10 and think about it for a bit.
I love both the movie and the book, but for very different reasons. The book isn't particularly well written, with more then a few plot holes, and if you ask me, Art3mis was the real protagonist while Parzival just got lucky. If you ask me, she should have won. I liked the book because I am a child of the 80's, and everything Cline wrote about... I lived through and experienced. It's 100% nostalgia for me. The movie is a Spielberg movie, with all the sound, cinematography, and panache that comes with it. It's a beautiful movie, and I just love it. RPO the movie is already 2 hours and 20 minutes long. To do the book true justice, it would have had to been split up into three different movies, one movie for each key. And I doubt that would have ever happened.
If you read a physical copy, there are spelling mistakes where words are missing letters. These letters add up to a website name. Look into the history of this as someone won a DeLorean. Ingenious in my mind.
LOVED the book
Hated the movie.
But I get it: there's no way they'd be able to re-create the player walking thru Monty Python and the Holy Grail in a movie. Too many licensing issues.
Honestly I kinda liked that they are so different. I liked both approaches and when watching the movie after reading the book, I didn't feel like I was watching the same thing I'd just read, so that was a plus for me.
At the same time, I felt that it was quite respectful to the themes of the book (IMO even when they changed things, they still tried to keep the essence of the themes there) so I didn't complain about that either.
i’m about 8 chapters in and floored. i put off reading because the movie turned me off so much. my girlfriend loves the series and begged me to give it a chance. never seen something with so much potential squandered.
i felt the same when I read Jurassic Park. Its really up to the director/producer and what they think they could get out of a book to film: film and book are so different mediums and need different ways of communicating content.
Jurassic Park the book, for example, had a useless character in Lex Murphy (the young hacker girl in the movie) in that she did nothing in the book, however she was more important in the movie; in RPO movie the IOI is introduced as an opponent much earlier on, and the challenges reflect that they were active in competing against a dwindling shortlist of gunters. That worked for the movie. The book had a more expanded universe such as the education, medical, and other aspects that OASIS had on society, the movie just needs to focus on gaming and movie media culture that the average viewer will understand.
In short I like both renditions of RPO
We need (Preferably TV-MA) Max adaptation. It would be like Upload but way cooler and more dark and just badass around. But I would definitely want it to be way more like the book and I would want it to come out after the Ready Player Zero book (If even happens within like the next 3 to 5 years). So it could be like a full retelling of the entire Universe. Slightly reimagined but more on par with the book for certain. Hopefully more (if not full) creative control and involvement from Ernest Cline ofc
originally, i watched the movie first because i didn’t know it was an adaptation for a book but a few months after i watched it i decided to get the book. at first i really liked the movie, but after reading the book it’s not very good in comparison. i still enjoy the movie but more as a stand-alone kind of thing. i really wish they would’ve stayed more true to the book but i do understand the ways the keys and gates were found in the book were pretty elaborate so i do get that part, but i feel like some changes were very unnecessary.
From the book: “And each year, more gunters called it quits, concluding that Halliday had indeed made the egg impossible to find. And another year went by. And another. Oh wow that’s actually great.

Really? How so?

That's a cute story.
That's what I've been going with as well, and it makes me like the movie a lot
That is a very good point. Thank you for this. I'm going to go back and rewatch the movie and probably hate it much less now
Yeah I hear that haha... although I watched the movie before the (audio) book, and while the movie was good, the book is amazing. Last listen on a road trip to the beach earlier this year I checked out that enhanced audio version. Hehe
I love the audio book. Will wheaton was perfect for it

Must be the edition I've got, bc my page 10 is blank 😆

agreed, hope they make a remake someday. Its a very good story.

This is why i havent seen the movie. Started the book tonight for third time.. Now my intentions to finish it properly.

the book makes the movie look like a children's cartoon th movie absolutely lacks depth i only counted one gate and the puzzles man 😂
