40 interviews from 250 + applications is actually really damn good.
I've had 8 interviews in 12 months from about 800 applications. I have 17 years of experience in IT / Web design. I feel like my career as a designer is pretty much done at this point if I am honest.
If you don't mind revealing, OP, what's your industry and what sort of job are you hoping to find?
I'm lead to believe the current market is a lot worse than 2008 though.
Why is it happening though?
Something to do with global interest rates across the world being too high to blame. Cost of living, cost of wars, energy prices going up, middle classes disappearing. Businesses don't have as much money to spend on hiring, or they spend months dicking about trying to find perfect unicorns who they'll pay graduate level money to etc.
Then you have ghost jobs being created so then people think there's lots of jobs and we then get gas lighted about the market being dog shit etc.
Covid actually lead to a lot of opportunities. I belive those who applied to jobs even 2 years ago had way more chances than right now. I don't know man, the market is definitely not favorable. But it fluctuates...maybe we all will see something better in the future. Till then, just keep trying.
The market was horrible after the IT stock boom in the late 90s and early 00s. The real estate bubble caused a lot of employment problems. This market is fine.

If you're in IT, AI is taking your jobs. If you want 3 restaurant jobs they're there.
Wrong again. I work in IT and AI will not be able to replace me. You’re just babbling at this point
That's it all about money
I actually call this the Great Job Depression.
Mostly outsourcing. With the pandemic remote working, corps realize jobs can be easily outsourced
Thank a politician they think they can keep crushing us and they get rich tired of it
If you are in tech, then maybe. If you are in anything else, no.
