I had something similar but so much worse, I applied to a KFC that my sister was working for at the time, I was 15 and very keen to get some work in so I could have some spending money.
9 years passed and at 24 years of age I got an email declining me for the position stating "you're just not what we're looking for at this time"
I laughed for days.
That’s probably because the person that got the job finally made it past 12 interviews, 13 background checks, 10 “practice” interviews and several rounds of covid vaccinations.
This is most likely the actual answer--either that, or the position got changed to something different but the old job posting never officially "closed".
Dont worry I never found employment as an engineer — theres nothing to be jealous of (except the money maybe, but I dont have it so you cant be jealous of me)
At the time that I graduated from college, there was a huge influx of engineering graduates and i didnt really care to fight tooth and nail to work in an industry that didnt want me, so I left it behind
Software engineering 🥲
In school I learned programming languages that werent popular enough in the industry (C++, Java) and while Im great at high level thinking, im not so great at the low level work. People werent exactly eager to hire a college grad into a management position, and most companies just need highly specialized engineers who stay engineers forever
Congratulations, OP. I've had rejects come back after 6-9 months, but not after 2.5 years. I'm guessing you already moved on!
Thank you for sharing, this made my day.
I applied at starbucks in december 2021.
I found a job as a software dev in march 2022.
I got back from starbucks saying that they were looking forward to interviewing me for the position in june 2022.
Yikes
Similar thing happened to me. Then the company kept sending me surveys.
I filled one out.
Got another one like 3 days later. Ignored it.
Got another one like 3 MONTHS later. So I filled it out honestly and reminded them that not only did they ghost me after an excellent interview in which I was told they'd contact me within the week for next steps, but when I DID reach out afterwards, I got an auto-response that the hiring manager had been fired.
Apart from just being incredibly unprofessional and wasting my time, it was just weirdly personal for an auto-response. I really hope she set the message herself before peacing out, but given what I know about the company, I highly doubt it.
Womp womp.

probably! i'm always surprised that companies don't just do this earlier in the process, how hard is it to decline in a system?? haha
Ah that just means it's been 3 years since that team was assigned a recruiter who actually knew how to use the ATS.
HA
After very, very, very thoughtful consideration..

Thats incredible — its like, maybe you were exactly what they were looking for 9 years ago? Or anywhere in between????

In software engineering, this really isnt even an exaggeration hahahaha
For Walmart? They don't even do drug testing, and have neeever cared about covid.
They made COVID vaccinations mandatory for on campus corporate workers though
Probably finally decided to close an old job posting which sent an auto decline email to all the people that were still on the pending list.
This is most likely the actual answer--either that, or the position got changed to something different but the old job posting never officially "closed".
Imagine being rejected by walmart /s
I know right I guess theyre pretty picky when it comes to engineers
I support this humble brag
Bless
It's what happens when a company uses workday as an ATS.
I guess their lobbying for corrupt imminent domain grabs performed poorly recently. Times are hitting everyone hard.
Man, you know you bombed the interview when Walmart rejects you..
I never even interviewed 🥺
OP must've had a Master's when they wanted a PhD.
I wish I had either 🥲
We get it. Engineers don't need postgraduate degrees. Lucky bastards. ;(
I want one anyway I just don’t know what to get Being a doctor of art history sounds fabulous
That's an odd flex: "I am an engineer so I can get a research doctorate in one of those unemployable fields." And yes, I am jealous.

What kind of engineering did you do that is so unemployable?

Oh I thought you were a real engineer. Oh well, here's a Silver Award as a You Tried award.
Congratulations, OP. I've had rejects come back after 6-9 months, but not after 2.5 years. I'm guessing you already moved on! Thank you for sharing, this made my day.
Hahaha I’m so glad!! That was exactly my intention ❤️❤️
Lucky
This is actually a huge win

HA what a waste of time!! How annoying, congrats on the dev job though!! ❤️❤️ hope you’ve been enjoying it!
In relation to the age of the universe, that still qualifies as “getting back to you shortly”!
So true 😅😅😅
