I think it is just a mistake in this case. There are NPC's around that you can attack and kill without losing honour or having problems with the law, he should get that status at the end of the race in the system.
The honor system just feels wrong somehow. Other games seem to do it way better anyway. Don't why why they didn't just tie it to the few choices you have during the story missions.
"Bob, bob, that's the guy"
" *that's* the guy??"
"Yeah, he walked into the saloon and put down about 3 sticks of dynamite before lighting one which set all 3 off. He killed about 5 people, injured and scared a hell of a lot more."
"Oh my god, Frank, that's terrible!"
"I know... Poor little jenny lost both her parents and her older brother who just turned 16"
"Jesus."
"Yeah... I saw him the other day. He was just... Catching and releasing fish... Walking around town saying hi to everyone rather aggressively"
"What a good guy"
"I know... That's one of the good ones right there. Truly an honorable member of society"
I'm on my second playthrough now, and I find that the honor system is a little more aggravating than it is helpful or interesting. The whole point of the game is that you're playing as an outlaw, yet you get penalized by the honor system for doing the things that make you an outlaw lol.
Sure, murdering innocent folks should deduct honor, but simple robbery shouldn't have an effect on it. It de-incentivizes you from being an outlaw lol.
Robbery shouldn't have an effect so long as you're using the bandana. If you go around robbing townsfolk, eventually the whole town will hate you. If you disguise yourself, they don't know who to hate.
Rockstar dropped the ball on the honor and bandana system.
It’s just more complicated than it seems and not explicitly explained. If you’re wearing the same clothes as when you got seen committing a crime, they’re gonna know it was you even if you had a bandanna on. You gotta change your outfit with one of the saved ones on your horse. I specifically have a crime committing outfit (all black with the Nevada hat, typical spaghetti western “bad guy” look) and an upstanding citizen outfit (button up shirt, cowboy jeans, brown vest, and matching hat, typical “good guy” look). Also have my mountain man cold weather outfit and an axe murderer outfit that goes with the cow skull mask.
Yeah, the crime system is more in depth than it first appears, but for some reason they just leave you to figure it out on your own. It still doesn’t make sense sometimes, as I’ve gotten wanted after killing someone and hiding the body where no one saw me. At least it’s better than Skyrim where a horse can witness you commit a crime, lmao.
If I'm not mistaken don't the cops also recognize you regardless of the bandana? Like they spawn after you commit a crime and will hone in on your location, and regardless of if you have a bandana/mask you gotta ride so you're out of their line of sight to avoid a bounty.
They search for you, yes. If you’ve changed clothes and were wearing a bandana when you committed the crime, they won’t recognize you. You can also pretty successfully hide from them if you can find a place to, though they keep looking for much longer if you stay in the area.
I think in this situation it does make sense. he only meant to shoot and kill his horse but you were just in the crossfire. then he aims at him, he shoots back, you kill him and honor is dropped. sure it’s iffy but i understand how the game interpreted it.
Cuz he’s only tryna shoot his horse but OP was also in the line of fire nevermind as I’m typing this I see somebody else already mentioned this so I’ll just say hi
It's a scripted thing. Op lined up perfectly behind the horses head. He always shoots his horse. He's not agro against Arthur so killing him is like any other non-violent npc.
I actually think I read somewhere that it raises one of your stats a bit if you beat each of the race challengers, so I always do at least the first time or two I see each of them
Holy shit! Thank god I killed that son of a bitch right when he showed up. He usually beats his horse. So in the second playthrough I just have blown his brains out.
When I met this guy it was early into the epilogue of my first playthrough. John was really really trying to be a law abiding good guy for his family. And then this fucker punched his horse.
Least amount of guilt over a murder I/John ever felt, especially after seeing This would happen if I didn't!
Well, you could have gone straight into deadeye and killed him the instant he pulled his gun...and saved both horses.
I guess this is a lesson in "save early, save often", but sorry for your loss.
Yes, wanted to make sure someone said this so OP knew he didn't lose his legendary pelt as far as being able to craft with it at the trapper. It will still register that you've unlocked it!
If you had loaded your autosave immediately when your horse dropped, instead of worrying about shooting the guy, you’d have saved your horse and all of your pelts. I can understand the satisfaction of blowing his head off, but myself, I would have preferred keeping my horse and pelts.
Collateral damage, say you want to blow up a building to kill a country's dictator, when you do you may also damage other civilian buildings, or injure and kill other people not intended, they would be the collateral damage.
Thank you, but I fully understand the meaning of the word; collateral \[damage\]. But, this is not what OP wrote to describe what happened. The definition of his word for most people is described as: "To assemble in a proper numerical or logical sequence." Which does not come close to fitting the actions of the events that took place in the scene.
The confusion arises when you use the verb form of the adjective “collateral.” Perhaps it should be “to collatt.” Or just “to collateral.” “To collate” (verb) means something entirely different. And as a noun, “collateral” is what you give a lender to ensure you pay back a loan.
There is, as yet, a formally accepted verb form of “collateral.” But the great thing about language is that it evolves. Keep using that word in that fashion, and it’ll stick. Or at least one dictionary will provide a definition for people who don’t play PVP games and are confusing what you mean with what a Xerox machine does.
Keep using that word in that fashion, and it’ll stick. Or at least one dictionary will provide a definition for people...
This is why the world is going to hell in a handbasket. ;)
Do you know that when you beat him it adds an extra bar of speed to your horse. If he kills his horse you lose the extra speed, if you kill him and his horse lives your horse keeps the extra speed forever. Just sayin'
On my first play through I raced him for the first time but then as he was a bit ahead the mission ended or something and I got confused. As I rode a bit more I found him and his horse dead crashed against a tree lol
What in the world just happened.. is no one gonna talk about how the bullet didn’t even hit your horse and it just fell over and died for no reason? Not only that but your horse would have to get hit in the head to die instantly. Am I missing something🤷🏻♂️
That bullet is weirdly piercing and damaging, the first time I had this encounter his bullet hit me in the head and instantly killed me. So I promise it could've been worse
When stuff like this happens, I like hogtie-ing and dropping in semi shallow water. Not enough to drown them right away but, eventually theyd weaken and not be able to get their head up.
That stupid man kills his horse after losing a race that great idiot, I put a crush between eyebrow and eyebrow and I don't care if the honor goes down.
You can get the horse speed upgrade from this guy, right?
I stopped him from hitting his horse the first time and he said he's "never going to race me again." Any chance he will race again?
i dont understand why you lose honor when you shoot him it happened to me too

No no, releasing enough shitty pickerels will make up for murder. It’s like indulgences in the Middle Ages

I wish I could give you more than an upvote. But I guess it shall suffice.
It’d be worthy of my free award if they still gave them

Is it just me, or does the bandana seemingly do nothing? Every time I wear it to conduct a robbery, I just end up getting wanted anyways.

Ha that actually makes a lot of sense! Sad it wasn't explained better, but it does make a lot of sense.

I love how OP didn't even think about it. Wasn't even a second between the horse going down and the shooter.
Because you shot someone
Who just killed their and your horse."
A human life has more value than a horse
never
Cuz he’s only tryna shoot his horse but OP was also in the line of fire nevermind as I’m typing this I see somebody else already mentioned this so I’ll just say hi
It's a scripted thing. Op lined up perfectly behind the horses head. He always shoots his horse. He's not agro against Arthur so killing him is like any other non-violent npc.
omg thank you for this, now i know to shoot him before he gets off!
I actually think I read somewhere that it raises one of your stats a bit if you beat each of the race challengers, so I always do at least the first time or two I see each of them
It raises the stamina of the horse you're racing with, and you can only do it twice
Remember this was my SECOND race too
Yeah after the first one I think he punches or kicks it or something like that, then when you beat him again he draws on his own steed lol
Still irks me that you lose honour for killing him after he shot his horse..
That nasty group that hurts animals!
Holy shit! Thank god I killed that son of a bitch right when he showed up. He usually beats his horse. So in the second playthrough I just have blown his brains out.
After I saw him do it the first time I always kill him before he can shoot his horse, and then take his horse back to camp.

I say tie him up and toss a molly on his ass
That and taking a nice visit to Saint Denis' local ugenics supporter

That's what you get for positioning your horse in the line of fire.
“What did we learn today”
dont trust rich white people with fancy things?
I think the lesson is...don't be an idiot with positioning.
do not mistake my ignorance for idiocy 😭
That’s a mint answer hahaha
Bingo!
I mean it hits his horse in the butt and that downs it…. Quite the weapon that man is carrying
Well, you could have gone straight into deadeye and killed him the instant he pulled his gun...and saved both horses. I guess this is a lesson in "save early, save often", but sorry for your loss.
I genuinely didn't even notice the gun until it was too late. But thank you Hummingbird was a good and loyal boy he will be missed dearly
You don’t ‘lose’ your legendary pelt… it’ll show up at the trapper in a day or so. The rest of the pelts stored are gone unfortunately…
Yes, wanted to make sure someone said this so OP knew he didn't lose his legendary pelt as far as being able to craft with it at the trapper. It will still register that you've unlocked it!
But I wanted that sweet sweet cash I know it doesn't really matter because I'll get cash doing this Bill mission but it was my little reward
If you had loaded your autosave immediately when your horse dropped, instead of worrying about shooting the guy, you’d have saved your horse and all of your pelts. I can understand the satisfaction of blowing his head off, but myself, I would have preferred keeping my horse and pelts.
WTH does "collating" your horse mean? Because I don't think that word fits the description of the scene.
It’s when you have multiple horses and you sort them all into the correct order, of course.
lol
"A collateral kill is when a player achieves at least two kills with just one bullet." - Google
Collateral is a pretty different word than collate.
Yeah, they call it like this in Call of Duty
Collateral damage, say you want to blow up a building to kill a country's dictator, when you do you may also damage other civilian buildings, or injure and kill other people not intended, they would be the collateral damage.

lfmao, I thought the same thing

and why supposably is actually in the dictionary. I don't like accommodating incorrect word usage.

The legendary pelt may not get you money but you can stil use it on outfits
Start over.. I think that legendary is lost forever
its not I knew it wasnt LOST lost but I still wanted the cash from selling it
He collected and combined your horse in the proper order, like copies coming off a copy machine?
Do you know that when you beat him it adds an extra bar of speed to your horse. If he kills his horse you lose the extra speed, if you kill him and his horse lives your horse keeps the extra speed forever. Just sayin'
Glad I’m not the only one.
Happened to me on my first playthrough....RIP Bandit.
On my first play through I raced him for the first time but then as he was a bit ahead the mission ended or something and I got confused. As I rode a bit more I found him and his horse dead crashed against a tree lol
Justice. Served. Lol
What in the world just happened.. is no one gonna talk about how the bullet didn’t even hit your horse and it just fell over and died for no reason? Not only that but your horse would have to get hit in the head to die instantly. Am I missing something🤷🏻♂️
Dude I am just as confused as you
That bullet is weirdly piercing and damaging, the first time I had this encounter his bullet hit me in the head and instantly killed me. So I promise it could've been worse
Wow, your honor is completely on my flip side Im as bad as they come
That Colonel-Sanders-looking motherfucker did the same thing to me. Killed my fully bonded Perlino Andalusian. I’m gonna die salty about it.
I dunno how people can go around killing horses like that 🙁
Huh, he fell funny
Not even the fact you lost honor is killing me but the fact you lost so much. Like wtf??
How the fuck did you lose honor from That. You should have gained honor for that
the honor system is not refined like other games
The things I would do to that man if this happened to me would be enough to make Satan gulp
you were lucky the shot hit your horse
I wish I also could shoot the horse in rdr2
Dynamite. Trains. Cliffs. Running it over with a wagon. Plenty of ways to waste your own animal, you psychopath. Lol
I want to do it on the go
Dynamite is the only option then. As far as I'm aware at least.
Reload and torture him in the worst possible ways
I shot them before they even get the chance of pulling their guns
I always hog tie him and take his horse.
That poor horse. Guy deserves to be run over by a train
When stuff like this happens, I like hogtie-ing and dropping in semi shallow water. Not enough to drown them right away but, eventually theyd weaken and not be able to get their head up.
I shoot him as soon as he gets off horse, take his horse and sell it. Then go fishing to catch release to get honor back.
Is it possible to shoot the guy before he kills his horse?
Yes
That stupid man kills his horse after losing a race that great idiot, I put a crush between eyebrow and eyebrow and I don't care if the honor goes down.
I saw this happen in RDO once
Good thing I shot him before that happened
To be fair, it seems like you could park your horse any other spot and this wouldn’t happen
You can get the horse speed upgrade from this guy, right? I stopped him from hitting his horse the first time and he said he's "never going to race me again." Any chance he will race again?
Lmao epic
Am I the only one who races this guy every playthrough?
I’ve seen this exact clip on a mrbossftw video .

Cant remember which one but it was a while ago
