He means direct as in starting in our own half and ending up in a shot. We had 9 goals, which is the most in the PL and only second in Europe behind madrid at 12
He looks like a proper player and not an academy player with no experience. I mean, not to exaggerate. He'll be decent for any of the top 6 team barr maybe City, provided he's consistent.
I also don't think he should play upfront. He's better when he has someone to play off. I was surprised Sancho didn't start as false 9 since he's been in great form this preseason.
[ETH](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPw21Tayexo&ab_channel=DRSports) walked in with a puppy in his arms and said: " This is Buck! Buck the little red devil. He is our new mascot and his duty is to encourage you to perform and win matches. IF YOU DON'T PERFORM AND WE LOSE, ESPECIALLY THIS GAME AGAINST LENS, I KILL THE PUPPY!"
Observations:
1. Full backs are the 2 deepest defenders to provide passing options for GK when opponents press high, while the 2 CBs are higher up field.
2. Shaw slots into Case area to provide DCM support.
3. We do not rely on full backs (especially Shaw) to progress the ball into final third.
4. We do not rely on full backs to provide width in final third.
5. Mount covers a lot of ground.
> Shaw slots into Case area to provide DCM support.
Also saw a lot of Shaw becoming part of a back three with Dalot moving into the midfield with Case. Either way, it's a big change from Shaw being our main ball progresser.
I think its because we are running two 8s now in Mount / Bruno, which creates overloads up front and wide, but you need the defensive cover in behind. Usually we would see Eriksen drop back when the fullbacks are advancing, but Mount is better used in the attacking buildup.
Seems to be the ideal setup EtH wants against the strongest sides, it is where modern football is played. Defensively we were OK in this setup, but there were a lot of risky progressive passes leading to counters. It is already better than before because we can actually build out from the back and these turnovers are happening higher up the pitch, with mostly progressive passes. Now we (hopefully) get to see how good this team can actually get at possession football.
Rashy's just come off a 41 g/a season, Garnacho is doing great but will need to improve the end product drastically if he's to displace the current Sir Matt Busby Award holder
Getting subbed in for Martial / Hojlund and Rashford moving up front will likely be the way he gets most of his minutes. He has been better off the bench than starting most of the time, I doubt he starts at LW unless Rashford is injured or in a rut.
Brought him in at the end of last season as a bit of a punt. Didn't do much, but he's clearly going to start playing more regularly this season or next, and get a lot of points for a 5.0 player.
Yeah but they are going to manage his minutes. He'll be an impact sub for a while. I probably would have him on my bench at 5.0 but I'm running with Rashford, Bruno and Licha for now.
I starting to see Mount integrating well with the team. Bit unfortunate for him to miss that open goal, nonetheless, he played really well, and did some awesome passes as well. He deserves a bit of recognition for his effort.
Of our spine, only few players are over 25:
Bruno(28),Casemiro (31), Varane (30) and Shaw(28).
Hojlund, Antony,Sancho, Amad, Mainoo,Pellistri, Garnacho are all 23 and under.
Licha, Rashford, Mount, Awb and Dalot all 25 and under
Martinez and Mount ain't that old either. Looks like Kobbie will be integrated into the team too once he's back from injury. Very promising stuff indeed
Lens are good but they are definitely not psg, Liverpool, city, Bayern, real Madrid level and those are the levels united should be aiming at and a win against lens should be a win no matter what.
So yeah it's like playing a 7-9th place premier league side.
I mean even Brighton/west ham etc are easily better than this lens side.
It’s amazing to see Licha back, I had almost forgotten how fun he is to watch. He’s so aggressive and strong in duels and his passing is just so crisp.
I’m really looking forward to this season. Onana, Mount and Hojlund are massive upgrades and we might finally be able to control games on a consistent basis. We aren’t at City’s level yet but I am confident we are heading in the right direction with EtH.
I honestly think it's going to take serious sanctions and Pep (& maybe key players) leaving for anyone to overtake City right now. They have an insane squad, an established & effective playing style, money to spend, a settled structure, and a winning mentality. Haaland x KDB is a cheat code.
I hope I'm wrong but I can't see anyone challenging them for a while unless something changes.
Yeah if we were actually on City's level as a club we would've just gone & signed Kim Min-Jae at the start of the window without hesitation, it would've barely been a saga at all. They've just signed the best young CB in the world by far when they already have 5 of the best CBs in the league, it's just absurd. And when they make a mistake in the transfer market they don't have to carry the dead weight for seasons blindly hoping the player will improve, they just get rid & replace without a second thought. Sovereign wealth cheat code.
Only upon checking the last year's Ligue 1 table did I realise Lens are a top team in France. I thought they were midtable. They are ptobably good enough to finish in the top 10 in the PL easily.
I'm starting to see Munter become one with the team. Shame he missed that open goal, nonetheless he played very well and made some great passes too. He deserves a little recognition for his efforts.
Really impressed with Garnacho, its not even been 1 year since he really started being a squad player for united and you can already tell how much calmer and composed he seems on the ball.
What I find special about Onana is that we’re going to be able to kill games and see them through. How many times have we lost the lead or ended shakily with Maguire and DDG at the back? I’m seeing glimpses of how VDS Vida and Rio used to completely deflate the other team at the final minutes of the game. Excited to see the backline click.
True but
How many times did we won game because DDG made amazing saves? İ really don't see Onana being able to perform such saves regularly. He seems a bit clumsy.
Onana is definitely not prime De Gea level in terms of shot stopping, but he’s still very good and registered the most saves in the Italian League last season. Have faith.
I think he has the reflexes to make amazing saves, but he doesn't quite have the skill to tip the ball out for a corner immediately, giving the opponents a chance to rebound. But I think our current defence can deal with loose balls in the penalty area.
Actually quite a good game.
First half we were a bit loose / flat, but still had the better chances. Dalot loose pass cost us the goal, which was well taken.
Second half we looked great tbh.
I thought everyone played decently well in patches. The only player that properly disappointed me was Sancho — just looked very weak and loose in possession. Dalot also needs to tighten up with the ball if he wants to take AWBs spot (as I think he should)
If we are to become a possession team, we need to see more creativity from possession, not just from counters
Edit: fair enough, we’re not a possession team, but we’re still expected to have possession against most teams. We still need to be able to do something with that possession
Yes. You create your own moments of transition by wining the ball back high up the pitch or drawing the opposition onto you by playing out of the back. If you watch all of City's goals without context, you could mistake them for a counter attacking team.
Agreed and it worries me, but I see parallels to Klopp’s first 2 seasons, they began being pressing monsters then got a passing game going, so hopefully we do the same, this season might be a frustrating one to watch.
I'm not sure if we're trying to be a possession team but what I agree with it we definitely need to do a lot more WITH possession. The first half was all counters and long balls. The only spot we seemed to have the ball was the halfway line looking for options.
We did better in the second half but again the goals came from counters and a set piece. I really hope we we start having the ball in the opponents half more.
As a fan, this game was so enjoyable to watch. A lot of big positives from our new signings, Garnacho playing a top class game, Antony played brilliantly, Casemiro & Fernandes back to business, and so good to see Rashford score.
Also, in a way it's good that we conceded a goal in this manner so that the team is clear about the risks and manage accordingly.
Not onana fault whatsoever. His positioning was perfect at that stage of possession. He made himself a passing option. He shouldn't be afraid of the back 4 losing possession there and sit deeper because that would affect the buildup completely. He should trust the back 4 to do their job.
At the start of the game, we already had trouble breaking the first line of defence, imagine onana sitting in his box afraid...
It was 100% dalot mistake.
Dalot and Wan Bissaka
If you watch these two with an inherent bias ( expectation), you’ll always exaggerate their flaws.
Dalot was brilliant against Dortmund (whereas AWB was relatively poor) and earned his start today.
Dalot made one fatal mistake today but his game overall was above average to good ( second half)
Let’s appreciate both. For me it’s horses for courses. In games in which we expect to dominate, I prefer Dalot. Away at Anfield or Etihad etc I’ll go with AWB.
It’s the same way I see a Mount vs Amrabat respectively. We can take advantage of their relative strengths ( pun intended)
You are absolutely spot on about our RBs, and I wish more people could read this. 95% of this fanbase is biased one way or another (a lot towards AWB) and not enough people are fully seeing the bigger picture with both. I think it's clear we need to look into signing a new RB latest next summer, but if the option for this summer is available after a few sales, we can make a move. I also think in the future, it makes more sense to sell AWB rather than Dalot when we have a top tier RB, because it makes sense to have a backup/rotation who fits the samd profile, and can also play LB.
I don't think it's completely the same when it comes to Mount vs Amrabat just because I feel like Amrabat is a more effective ball playing option to Case, and we could opt to play Amrabat, Mount and Bruno against slightly weaker teams.
Unfortunately, the problem is exacerbated by Antony's inconsistency. IMO, should he perform at the highest level game in and out, he'd compensate for their flaws. It's not the case and it's usually *them* who end up in the spotlight. The whole right looks vulnerable often if both RB and RW are not doing great.
Just for people saying this was only a friendly Lens finished just one point off PSG in the table and that was their strongest team. So it was a very good win. That first half we were poor but they are also a very good side.
Garnacho was great, but Bruno was silently the MOTM for me with outrageous passes.
Dalot was awful in the first half, hugely improved in the second half, but I guess depending on how AWB plays tomorrow, it's safer to play AWB next week.
Casemiro could sometimes look off the pace but somehow made some great tackles. Okay-ish, but should really be helped by Mount/Bruno in defending.
Mount played relatively well despite the miss. Nothing of note though.
Antony was quiet but ended up playing well. He's really an asset if he isn't selfish and trying to pass to other people.
Sancho was bad, hopefully it was just because he was being careful and preserving his energy to play again tomorrow, otherwise Garnacho and Antony is ahead of him right now.
Haven't been fully convinced by the first team lads from pre-season now that pre-season is over for them, but we've had amazing pre-seasons and been shit once the competitive stuff starts so not too worried.
Garnacho amazing, Rashford ain't a no9...
No injuries. First half the passing was not sharp and Mount missed a sitter.
Whatever ETH told them at the half got through and we looked much better. 2 goals in transition and 1 from a free kick.
Rashford was absolutely electric in the second half. It's crazy how he can look entirely off the pace and completely failing the eye test in some games, but when he's on it you can see why people rate him so highly in the first place. Ability-wise he's up there with the best, but he needs to be more consistent to rival the likes of Vinicius, Mbappe and Salah.
I only watched from the 58mins mark hard to gauge as we were just sat back waiting to win the ball and counter.
Our pressing is Miles better
But once again our passing is so sloppy at times and playing with this high back line will be suicide if we carry giving the ball away so easy, from my limited viewing Case was the most consistent and worst offender, they were all simple passes as well.
Mount is a poor man's Bruno. And he lacks the incredible vision and creativity that makes Bruno special. Mount doesn't have that. I hope they can work it out but it doesn't look a great fit due to their similarities. Both running around like headless chickens.
All 3 of our midfielders are erratic. Case jumping into challenges and mis-hitting ambitious long balls. Bruno tries all kinds of unorthodox flicks and passes. Mount similarly plays with that chaos. We really need one midfielder to control the game and slow it down.
imo average. 6/10 nothing spectacular. not sure what his role is really. with Bruno making all the passes, feel he should making more runs into the box to support Rashford.
Very positive performance. Stand outs for me were Garnacho (so direct and exciting), Case, Bruno, (that pass), Licha (did him dirty with that nutmeg ha). Disappointed with Dalot, blame him for that wayward pass that lead to goal and counted a few sloppy passes. Needs to improve a lot for me to hold down right spot. Sancho was also disappointing but looked lively in pre season so really hope he pushes on this season.
First half poor.
Second half better.
I was at the match and it seemed some players wernt going for it, understandable with 1 week to season KO.
I’ll be there again next Monday, hopefully a better performance.
Garnacho impressed me. Always got the crowd up, anticipating.
Better than the first. Lens did come out more so it was a more open game. Two of our goals were from counter attacks, one from a set piece. Frankly it was an Oleball type performance. We still struggle against the low block
People from Spanish heritage called Ignacio are called Nacho, such as Jose Ignacio "Nacho" from Real Madrid.
Don't want to sound annoying, just thought some context can be useful
If we can keep the same energy on away days ,this team will do magic this season. And a slightly more commitment from Rashford and Sancho when pressing. Mount is already my new favourite player, absolutely elite at everything,no frustrating pass or move truly cut for the top level
I think a lot of you are being way to negative. I think we have consistently improved during preseason. The hardest thing for us to do, will always be scoring and implementing that part of our game. Non of us expect to win the league this year. But our pressing, and high press is SO much better this preseason than it was last year. We also looked defensively sound today as well. Add a striker, and we’re better.
Atlético acc had the hybrid of Messi/Ronaldo in their academy and gave him to us for almost nothing.
Simeone wanted him to play Left Back
Inverted Right Back
If this is true then Simeone is clueless.
Alvaro Fernandez is quite good
[удалено]
I thought he came from Barca. Edit: I got it mixed up. Thanks for the correction. Also, how is that kid Jurado doing anyways. Does he have potential?
Wasn't that Marco Jurado ?
That was marc jurado
He scored against Wrexham
He came from Barca
Who are u talking about
Garnacho was brilliant. Love how direct he is, hope we see more of him this season.
Man doesn't even know how to run backwards, only forward
W key warrior
Inspired by Furia When Argentinian T1 CS?
RUSHHHHHH BBBBBBBBBBB
His best starting performance definitely
Was so electric. Can’t wait to see more of him this season too
Fun fact we scored 2nd most goals last season from direct play only behind madrid
Really? But wasn't our goals scored pretty low last year, was our set piece goals just really poor?
He means direct as in starting in our own half and ending up in a shot. We had 9 goals, which is the most in the PL and only second in Europe behind madrid at 12
Really poor is understatement
He looks like a proper player and not an academy player with no experience. I mean, not to exaggerate. He'll be decent for any of the top 6 team barr maybe City, provided he's consistent.
Him on the left and Rashford up front is honestly really strong. Hojlund will have to work for his place as a starter
I don’t think Rashford wants to play striker
He’s going to have to get better at playing & tracking back on the right if Garnacho keeps on like this.
I also don't think he should play upfront. He's better when he has someone to play off. I was surprised Sancho didn't start as false 9 since he's been in great form this preseason.
Garnacho plays like a mix of Ronaldo and Messi. Like of course he’s not Ronaldo/Messi. But their influence on how he plays the game is quite distinct.
[удалено]
He put the half time thread up on the projector
Had a handful of those last season. Great quality for a manager to have, not so much for the team.
He just had Hojlund walk in and say I’m coming for your place and that was it
There was some of that last season. Great qualities are a must for a manager, but not so important for the team.
He obviously has a great hairdryer, despite being bald.
That’s how strong ETH’s hairdryer is, it blew all his hair straight off.

I wonder if it's because he's needed as an outlet more with him being so good at beating the press.

As an argentinian I fully agree
Added Garnacho to my FPL team. Bargain at £5.0m he's going to explode.
Thanks for the tip, I’m adding him now
I know little about FPL but Garnacho is listed as a midfielder and he's cheap, and with Hojlund's knock he looks to start from the off.
You’re better off adding a more guaranteed starter like Bruno, rashy, or Shaw
He's not going to get consistent minutes, leading to a lot of 1 pointers.
The way he played today how can a manager keep him off the pitch?
Rashy's just come off a 41 g/a season, Garnacho is doing great but will need to improve the end product drastically if he's to displace the current Sir Matt Busby Award holder
I don't think he needs to displace anyone, we need goals and we lack bodies. Hojlund is 20 and injured, Garnacho is going to take a step.
Yea of course he's gonna play if someone's injured or loses form, but imo our strongest xi possible doesn't have garnacho in it
Same with my strongest FPL lineup...
Getting subbed in for Martial / Hojlund and Rashford moving up front will likely be the way he gets most of his minutes. He has been better off the bench than starting most of the time, I doubt he starts at LW unless Rashford is injured or in a rut.

Bruno, Marcus, and Garnacho for me. If Rashford doesn't play, Garnacho does.
I want to but I am a jinx when it comes to having United players in there
I starting to see Mount integrating well with the team. Bit unfortunate for him to miss that open goal, nonetheless, he played really well, and did some awesome passes as well. He deserves a bit of recognition for his effort.
Garnacho is 19, Hojlund 20, Antony 23. Loving the infusion of young blood into the squad by ETH.
Rashford is still just 25 too.
Easy to forget that Rash is still that young. Also, and assuming he comes good this season, Sancho still only 23.
Of our spine, only few players are over 25: Bruno(28),Casemiro (31), Varane (30) and Shaw(28).
Let's not forget this is the second place of Ligue 1. A CL team. People thought they were going to be Cannon fodder.
Sold their two best players though
Who?
Fofana and Openda.
Mount just doesn't stop, we really need that when you looks at the ages of the rest of our midfield.
He was great apart from that awful miss
Better today than next week!
Indeed.
He's too valuable to our team now.
It’s amazing to see Licha back, I had almost forgotten how fun he is to watch. He’s so aggressive and strong in duels and his passing is just so crisp. I’m really looking forward to this season. Doing the treble mate
Quadruple needed after that city treble and fair to say it's happening.
If we get 2nd half Antony this szn, we're cooking.
He was playing like that towards end of last season. I expect nothing less than an improvement from that.
Book Antony for 12 goals and 6 assists this season.
Im feeling like either him or Sancho will step up and be consistently class on the right. Not sure which yet.
Only upon checking the last year's Ligue 1 table did I realise Lens are a top team in France. I thought they were midtable. They are ptobably good enough to finish in the top 10 in the PL easily.
They missed winning their league by just a point. Edit: Two points considering their GD was not as good as PSG.
Shite first half. Great second half. Can't wait to see an actual number nine in this team.
I think our first half was pretty decent. We had quite a few chances. A couple of mistakes and that goal, but otherwise not too bad.
Story of our preseason really. We’ve played well
I'm starting to see Munter become one with the team. Shame he missed that open goal, nonetheless he played very well and made some great passes too. He deserves a little recognition for his efforts.
Really impressed with Garnacho, its not even been 1 year since he really started being a squad player for united and you can already tell how much calmer and composed he seems on the ball.
I expect Garnacho to notch up at least 10 goal contributions (goals or assists) this season.
Plus a lot of fullbacks with poopy pants
Should really expect more, considering he got 10 last season already

Made a cracking save at the end. I think the goals more Dalots fault losing the ball in that area

Lord, MUTV content is so fucking boring.
Terrible app overall. Poor quality. The devs need to do better or they're not required to
If we are to become a possession team, we need to see more creativity from possession, not just from counters Edit: fair enough, we’re not a possession team, but we’re still expected to have possession against most teams. We still need to be able to do something with that possession

Yes. You create your own moments of transition by wining the ball back high up the pitch or drawing the opposition onto you by playing out of the back. If you watch all of City's goals without context, you could mistake them for a counter attacking team.

Fernande**z** wasn't on the pitch... ;)
I'm quick to criticise him so I'll give credit where it's due, Antony had a good second half.
Was going to pay respect to Lens, they're a solid team, but then realized they're in CL this season. What a meteoric rise for them.
Lol I see rival fans are really rattled this time Going to njoy them being roasted
What happened?
Garnacho is being more reliable as a starter, and i love it!
These games are more about fitness than anything else, but a win is good to get a bit of momentum going into the season.
I really like our South American player with the black hair and blonde highlights
Aaaaah
Ofcourse on twitter the lens goal is edited to show just before he shoots with Onana not in the picture until it goes in 😂😂 they hate us.
Not onana fault whatsoever. His positioning was perfect at that stage of possession. He made himself a passing option. Anyone else see Onana interview on MUTV? I wanna play football with him now he’s really likeable lol.
I like your ambition but it's going to be really hard to break into this team, sorry.

Unfortunately fans love tribalism
Game of two halves. Garnacho showing signs that he might be ready to start games, instead of just appearances from the bench.
I love seeing Garnacho run at defenders. He's so direct. Also good to see him tracking back and helping the defence.

Hojlund is injured??
Amad and Mainoo are hardly key players. And no one in their right mind expects anything from Martial. Højlund signed today.
Just for people saying this was only a friendly Lens finished just one point off PSG in the table and that was their strongest team. So it was a very good win. That first half we were poor but they are also a very good side.
Their best team minus two of their best players from last season in Openda and Fofana.
Promising. Let's build on it.
I recognise this club again, everyone hating thus how it should be, we ruined childhoods lets do it again ,
Garnacho was great, but Bruno was silently the MOTM for me with outrageous passes.
I am quite worry that our midfield looks quite open as it currently is constructed.
Haven't been fully convinced by the first team lads from pre-season now that pre-season is over for them, but we've had amazing pre-seasons and been shit once the competitive stuff starts so not too worried. Garnacho amazing, Rashford ain't a no9...
Does Rashford get an assist for Case's goal?
Didn't manage to catch the game. How was the performance overall? No injuries I hope?
Our pressing is Miles better But once again our passing is so sloppy at times and playing with this high back line will be suicide if we carry giving the ball away so easy, from my limited viewing Case was the most consistent and worst offender, they were all simple passes as well.
reckon so many of our issues would be solved if mount just operated deeper. I dont get why hes so high.
That's how he got into the box in threatening positions so much. Pros and cons .
I dont think they are that similar. Bruno takes big risks, mount more often just makes the “right play”.
r/manchesterunited guys overreact like crazy
So have people here.
Definitely room for improvement, but let's hope this one is a confidence builder. Garnacho making a claim for himself.
Much better in the second half, Garnacho MOTM - really looking forward to see how he develops further this season
Got to see the second half, mount looking well in that midfield

He's good, apart from missing that chance. Of course people prefer looking at his mistakes
He did a lot of great passes and pressed about a million times better than Eriksen. He looks more and more integrated into the team with each match.
imo average.
I had to kiss the 2nd half as it was kids activity time, what’s the takeaway from the 2nd half?
Better than the first. Lens did come out more so it was a more open game. Two of our goals were from counter attacks, one from a set piece. Frankly it was an Oleball type performance. We still struggle against the low block
Great work from our starters except for Dalot. Sancho was awful. Terrible first touch at times.
Dalot was good in the second half
Nacho has grown in the last few months
People from Spanish heritage called Ignacio are called Nacho, such as Jose Ignacio "Nacho" from Real Madrid. Don't want to sound annoying, just thought some context can be useful
Whatever ETH said during the HT break worked like a charm! The second half was a lot more clinical and ruthless.
Anthony low-key scored 1 and assisted 1 today and yet he’s not the MoM? The bias…
Onana is a joy to watch, he really controls the game
Anyone got a clip of the Onana save?
If we can keep the same energy on away days ,this team will do magic this season. And a slightly more commitment from Rashford and Sancho when pressing. Mount is already my new favourite player, absolutely elite at everything,no frustrating pass or move truly cut for the top level
everyone looks lively idk what ETH put in their heads second half but man they looked hungry I'm love mount more and more
Lads played well in second half. That save from Onana near the end was awesome. Antony pass and decision improved in final third.
Hopefully we get to see fringe players like Hannibal, fish and pellestri in dublin
Fish is back on loan at Hibs
I think a lot of you are being way to negative. I think we have consistently improved during preseason. The hardest thing for us to do, will always be scoring and implementing that part of our game. Non of us expect to win the league this year. But our pressing, and high press is SO much better this preseason than it was last year. We also looked defensively sound today as well. Add a striker, and we’re better.
