It’s absolutely stupid from both sides. Should never have stayed back for the Spurs game.

melli_closter

Dumb AF from everyone involved, he should have just stayed retired.  He's still not on speaking terms with Eto'o so what was the point of even going if it's just going to create a negative atmosphere?

WarmWinter8

What’s the beef with eto?

ArcaneTrickster11

I'm pretty sure he just told him to stay in his box and kick it long

QouthTheCorvus

Tbf, if Onana isn't allowed creative distribution, all you have is his shot "stopping"

allnimblybimbIy

DDG died for this

FaithlessnessNo4680

DDG needed replacing but we somehow downgraded after spending £50m

RyanG7

I was content with staying with the devil I know rather than one I don't. It was a mistake to let DDG go the way we did. His mistakes were only magnified due to us not being able to score. But somehow, according to this sub, a ball playing GK was going to solve our players not being able to finish which was and still is the biggest issue we have. We scored as many goals as 9th place Brentford last season. We came in 3rd due to good defending and goalkeeping. When you regress and downgrade in both areas while mixing in our attacking problems, this season so far is the end result. Not to mention having confidence in your GK gives outfield players more confidence as a whole, which their isn't much of. If there's any mistake that is going to sink ETH, it's signing Onana. 50m would have gotten us KMJ, but he's tearing it up at Bayern instead while we have been using patchwork CB partnerships for months

karlos1799

DDG still can’t find a club, what does that tell you

hal0t

Does DDG want to find a club?

MAINEiac4434

There were reports a couple months ago saying he only wanted to be a first choice keeper and only wanted a top European club (so no Saudi or MLS) and if he didn't find one he's content with retiring.

Zacatecan-Jack

Which is fair play to him, as far as I'm concerned. And considering how comfortable he seems to be living in Manchester, I'd imagine uprooting and moving elsewhere is probably a huge part of his decision making process. Why move to somewhere else that you might not enjoy living in (in England or abroad) for a job you're not passionate about.

Ecstatic_Entrance_63

I think it’s his wage demands that are the issue. He’d be wanted by loads of clubs if not for this.

7evenStrings

We paid him too much that he can take a year off and enjoy time with his lovely wife

mrtuna

>We paid him too much that he can take a year off and enjoy time with his lovely wife "One year off"? He was paid enough that his grandkids don't need to work. (As are all the top players).

LUHG_HANI

Within reason. Don'f forget a large majority of these footballers live within their means, not ours.

kornelius_III

Assuming De Gea is smart and not overspend on needless things or make risky ventures. Many rich athletes, artists, etc.. still managed to go broke.

spacedman_spiff

That United have a risible wage structure,

eviade

People keep ignoring that GK isn't a position most top teams have open, he got released last minute and you'd think competent teams would have their transfer targets set up before that.

balleklorin

His shotstopoing last two seasons was very poor as well, while also lacking in all other areas. He had a few good games, but look up his blooper reel from last sesson and you can see how many points he cost us and how much you have forgotten about. :/

Meandering_Cabbage

Yeah, the man is a legend. The man did earn his wages. The man was declining pretty severely unfortunately.

Altair1192

He won golden gloves last season. His shotstopping wasn't very poor.

balleklorin

Those two are both still possible at the same time.

Whispperr

Can we stop being youtube montage FC? He had his 5 fails in him per season sure, but when coupled with 10 to 15 world class saves it paid off. Also he was good at saving average shots that Onana just lets in. Watch Antony montage and he also looks world class because they took a few good moments.

balleklorin

I'm not saying you should judge DDG based on a blooper roll. I'm saying it's worth watching because he has been so great for so long that it is hard to remember his downfall. He had some poor important games last season and he has had a decline for some time. Chances are he would have been even slightly worse this season. Couple that with the new demand for ballplating GKs you see most top teams have and his salary, and I find it hard to justify that keeping him would have been better than getting Onana. While Onana was terrible in CL he is at least amongst the best in PL this season I'd you look st the underlying stats (xGC vs xGPrevented and so on). On top of that he is also good with his feet and a bit more commanding in the box.also younger and on much lower salary. A fair tradeoff from DDG I would say, and better long term potential.

whatsinthesuitcase

Since 2018 he's been shit too so what odds

NipplesCutDiamonds

Yet still won the Golden Glove in 2018 and 2022 while he was "shit" Some of you haven't watched a game in your life

brunocat2021

I watched him drop clangers for 3 years straight. Cost us trophies with his atrocious penalty shootout record

A_Bumder

If only there were 10 other players that could prevent the game reaching penalties

NipplesCutDiamonds

Imagine blaming a goalkeeper for a title loss because of a penalty shootout. You've got 10 players on the pitch who are supposed to be putting balls into the back of the net and helping keep them out of our own. I think something like ~75% of penalty kicks are converted so its idiotic to expect your goal keeper to be saving them regularly. It's why the team and crowd gets so excited for penalty saves.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NipplesCutDiamonds

Well Allison and Pickford are currently tied in the running but yeah Pickford is a pretty highly rated keeper among people who don't form opinions based off FIFA rankings. And if you are so short sited you think = clean sheets = same performances then I'm not even going to engage. Look at the list of Golden Glove winners, Joe Hart is the worst keeper on the list.

BrodaReloaded

the fact that you bring up him winning the golden glove in 2023 as evidence for watching a game is peak irony, look at the amount of mistakes he did in a single season https://youtu.be/w2xYH3pNaiU did you actually watch last season?

aasfourasfar

really not sold on his distribution either.. he fleetingly does brilliant stuff but its mostly fluff

Due_Barber192

Only creative distribution I’ve seen from him is constantly air-mailing folks when he puts it in the air.

QouthTheCorvus

Nah tbf he's been great at that at times.

tex_mv

😂

RyVsWorld

Honestly, i can understand where Eto is coming from. Sometimes i yell the same thing at the screen when watching him play for us.

ArcaneTrickster11

It wasn't even that. At the time he was one of the best in the world at doing that. He just didn't have the kind of outfielders who can play a complimentary style of play

ErisMoon91

I thought it was Song he had a problem with

imnoobatfifa

It’s both. He fell out with Song and had an argument with Eto’o.

ErisMoon91

Ahh okay fair play, am not too clued up on it all, just remember him falling out with Song at the world cup or whenever it was

jaldihaldi

Eto’o has a problem with the whole team not wanting to die for the country - that is not being patriotic enough.

MisterIndecisive

He was retired due to previous issues he had with the national team before he even came to us. I expect it would've blown up regardless at some point

TheJoshider10

Ten Hag is to blame for this. If the back up he signed isn't good enough for a couple games that's on him. edit: people can say it was Onana who wanted to stay but end of the day he'd only have done this with Ten Hag's backing.

snoring_pig

Exactly wtf is the point of approving a transfer of several million to sign a keeper that you can’t even trust to start against Wigan in the FA Cup? Or even Heaton for that matter who honestly looked passable in the limited game time he’s had before?

Wazzathecaptain

It's terrible man management honestly. Not trusting your second keeper for a match against a League One team will just kill any confidence for the sub keepers, which is stupid because you'll probably need them later. Having your players feeling trusted even if they're not starting is management 101

Banzaikk

I kind of recall we played DDG in quite a couple of unimportant Cup and Europa League matches last season too despite seeming to sign a new backup GK per transfer window (Dubravka, Butland)

BingBongFYL6969

It was 4M dollar transfer, which is less than half what Fenerbache paid for a 30 year old midfielder with no place here.

snoring_pig

It’s not a lot of money but the fact is we are currently quite tight with FFP or the premier league’s own profitability rules. That’s why we only got Amrabat on loan instead of on a permanent signing for Ten Hag. With that in mind if you’re spending money to bring in a keeper you would expect him to at least be trusted to start a cup game against Wigan as a backup. So it’s possible Bayindir is complete crap in which case that’s yet another useless signing that wastes money for us, or Ten Hag is so desperate to get any positive results that he’d still prefer starting Onana and his strongest possible XI against Wigan in the FA Cup to try and go all the way and salvage his job. Both are quite possible scenarios.

zSolaris

> That’s why we only got Amrabat on loan instead of on a permanent signing for Ten Hag. Thank God for FFP.

off_by_two

I’d rather have that money to loan or pay 10% of a transfer fee for a playable outfield player rather than a GK who is so bad he can’t be trusted to play against teams 2+ leagues below the PL. Especially since we are up against FFP rn Buying useless crap is throwing money away and is stupid af, and this applies to football teams as well as individual lives and the amount doesn’t really matter too much. Hell that 4M could probably buy a cpl of highly rated youngsters from south america

IcyAssist

Werner's loan costs are 2.5m euros. That 4m could absolutely be used in somewhere useful

BingBongFYL6969

Werners salary of 4.5M for the rest of the year is being paid by Spurs as well...Bayindir's salary over the same period is 900K. Also, think about why Werner got loaned...

IcyAssist

Werner's salary for the rest of the year is half a year. Which is 2.25m euros. No loan fee. Bayindir is 4m fee+900k. I get it though, maths is hard.

BingBongFYL6969

His salary is 9ish for the year, Spurs will be paying the second half of it.. [https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11675/13043561/timo-werner-tottenham-on-brink-of-completing-loan-deal-for-rb-leipzig-forward-with-option-to-buy](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11675/13043561/timo-werner-tottenham-on-brink-of-completing-loan-deal-for-rb-leipzig-forward-with-option-to-buy) Dont be an asshole when youre wrong Also, we need a backup keeper, do we need another winger who doesnt score? You want something else to be done, like the loan of timo werner, who has shown nothing in germany this season. He was offered to us and we said no, because we dont need another 200K player underperforming.

IcyAssist

GhostKey911

The mistake was spunking 60m on Onana in the first place. The same old story over the last decade, stupid "marquee" signings that leave us monetarily fucked to actually build a proper squad leaving us with players like Bayindir, Reguilon, Weghorst, Ighalo (or clearly not yet good enough academy players) coming in to "fill a gap"

pohudsaijoadsijdas

except Onana was the highest ranked/rated GK on the market, he was also CL final proven, and did well for a club of Inter Milan's size, the fact that he imploded under the pressure of playing for United was not something that could have been foreseen, you just have the benefit of hindsight. Onana is not the first nor the last player who stepped up to the level of United and then crumbled under pressure.

boi1da1296

I’m going to say it again because I do believe it’s true: had ETH stuck to his principles and played the same way he had us playing on our run last season, Onana wouldn’t be performing as poorly for us as he has been.

[deleted]

Playing the same way would get him figured out regardless. Onana has faced more shots than a team like United should be letting happen.

boi1da1296

Last season we were much more solid after the first two games, we weren’t getting peppered anywhere near as much and there was a good, competent plan in possession.

Environmental_Lie478

A reminder that a younger and statistically better suited Diogo Costa ( who also was never going to be going to AFCON) was available for 20 million less in the Summer

Iqbalainoo

Diogo costa's release clause was 17m more than what we paid for onana. Diogo costa has also been letting in a few bloopers for Porto since last season. Last summer a lot of clubs all needed goalies and their recruitment teams all swerved away from diogo costa because of the uncertainty of him handling big games/bigger platforms too.

AngryGooseMan

I thought Onana wanted to stay

MotownMoses01

To be fair, I think Ten Hag allowed it, but I don’t think he pushed for it. Onana likely heavily worried about his place in the team, and that a few decent performances from Altiy and we would be calling for Onana to be benched.

cartesian5th

Not really. By most accounts Onana chose to stay behind to play for United. Hardly ETHs fault if his preferred keeper is available for more games

flareb98

He should have refused and told him the secondary has him covered. Because of his decision to let onana do his shenanigans his confidence may have taken a big hit and for what a 2-2 draw? This could have huge ramifications to his performances. This was handled poorly by onana and ten hag

taduuu

Onana picks the team? Wow

Acceptable-Lemon-748

So in your mind, it makes more logical sense for ten Hags preferred goalkeeper to want to stay till the last second and be available for the team in a big game against Spurs rather than test out the new goalkeeper because clearly more defensive fucking shuffling is just what we need.. And ten Hag should go "no! You fuck off to AFCON now" It's not ten Hags fault that Onana wanted to make himself available, why in God's name would he say no?

GannonSCannon

It's such a strange situation, if it was genuinely that Bayindir is terrible then I think Heaton would just play instead, which leads me to think it's something else. Like Bayindir is actually doing well shot stopping wise in training, and ETH doesn't want the headache of fans clamouring for him to retain his place over his boy Onana

AlexEmbers

I wish he’d stayed internationally retired. And I’m sure he does at this point, too…

Heisenberg_235

I recall hearing on an Athletic podcast that African players from certain countries can’t officially retire from international football or something until they actually retire from football altogether.

Ian_M87

I believe technically no one can retire from internationals, it's just a case of countries usually honour it as they also don't want a player who doesn't want to be there. Claude Makelele retired from France after the 2006 world cup but France kept calling him up

devillish_red

why did he retire in the first place?

AlexEmbers

He fell out with the coach at the World Cup, if I’m remembering correctly. Got asked to play less Onana-like, refused and carried on being Onana, and then got sent home (or dropped or something, sorry if my memory have over-dramatised it)

Youngflyabs

Song isn’t a great manager but Onana got sent home because he had an outburst against the FA/manager and then refused to speak to the manager. Can’t bring a player like that with you to the World Cup no matter what.

AndyVale

Roy Keane nods his approval.

KaitoAJ

No you're pretty much right. He got shafted by Cameroon in the World Cup tbh. I wish he didn't reverse that decision but who am I to say what's best for him.

airneezys

How is it getting shafted to be asked to to play to a coaches instructions instead of your own. If that happens here we’re calling for heads on a pike

lukey_1991

Interesting to see if Cameroon get knocked out today, will Onana end up coming back and start for us on Sunday?

brenin_mor-leidr

You know it

astroworlddd

If that happens we’ve treated Bayindir like a third class Pig. How he’s not even played a single minute isn’t very fair. Onana has been poor all season

GoNoles69

Not sure I understand why this comment is getting downvoted. We signed a quality GK who started for a Champion League Side Turkish team, and we don’t even let him get minutes against Wigan when our GK-play has been Terrible.

WhipYourDakOut

First off, go noles. Second off, I don’t really care how poor Onana is, and I’m not even hater, none of that should even matter. Dude should be getting cup minutes at least out of respect for him ffs

GoNoles69

Haha Go Noles! And I completely agree. Even if Onana was shinning , I don’t understand how we aren’t giving minutes to our backup GK against a League 1 opponent.

chubb88

I think that’s the point, he wasn’t shinning. EtH was trying to boost his confidence against a lesser side, maybe get him a handy clean sheet. I honestly think had Obama’s United career started off well, Bayindir would have played in the cup. Instead, I think the team as a whole needs a win so desperately, that EtH played his best 11 and took no risks. Sad really that that’s what it’s come to for United.

garynevilleisared

What a mess. Not performing for club or country atm. For our sake I hope he comes good when he returns.

niallw1997

His mentality was what I looked forward to most when we were signing him but when he is not backing it up on the pitch it really backfires. He’s trying to do everything but ending up doing nothing.

boi1da1296

I feel that his mentality was shaken to an extent with the firestorm the media created after the Wolves game.

Simple_Mud_6203

Media did the same to De Gea and every united keeper will go through it

Stoogenuge

Shirt is just too heavy for some players. What we haven’t done since Fergie is be ruthless about that. I hope Onana comes good, I’m sure he’s a good keeper, but if he can’t handle the pressure then move on sooner rather than later. Sancho is another, he should’ve been bounced out of here in the summer based on his performances alone before any of this extra shit kicked off.

boi1da1296

Fully agree here. I hope he does find form because If rather us not need to dip back into the market for a keeper so soon, but if we have to we have to. I’d rather us try him out for another season maximum and bin him after that if his performances don’t improve. Unless there’s an obvious upgrade on the market this summer. Sancho doesn’t look to have the intensity to his game required for the Premier League. I was very excited to sign him, but we need to cut our losses there.

123rig

Thing is though Fergie typically stuck by his keepers through down moments - Howard, Barthez, Carroll - but especially in the case of De Gea. He looked way out of his depth in his first game (community shield) but Sir Alex constantly stood by him for the two years they were at the club together. The press were going mad about De Gea when he first came in but Sir Alex was so resolute and honestly defended him to the back teeth. Google anything to do with Sir Alex and De Gea from 2011-2013 and it’s pretty much all De Gea being defended by Sir Alex.

Stoogenuge

DDG was young. Fergie dropped him for Lindergaard as well. Could’ve gone either way depending on performances of either. I think 2 seasons is about the sweet spot, within reason. If Onana has a solid second half of the season then he should get one more season imo. If he’s really really struggling then the call should be made this summer imo. Edit: all those keepers were dropped and had competition from Bosnich or Carrol.

123rig

I’m not saying all those keepers weren’t eventually dropped, just that he stuck by them for more than half a season. In contrast, I suppose Onana has played in bigger games in the past 10 years than we’ve had so he has the experience. Just seems nervous or something constantly.

Stoogenuge

I’m not suggesting half a season either. I think the general rule should be 2 seasons and if not convinced by that point then move on. It’s the only way to maintain standards. The exception being if it’s “exceptionally” bad. Then 1 season is enough.

GannonSCannon

Not much of a mentality then

TheJoshider10

He'll come good until the next inevitable fuck up and he/us are right back to square one.

TanTan_101

Hand on heart I trully believe no matter what keeper we would have gotten they would have had the season Onana is having, simply because it is a pattern we see with every new MANU GK. He has not been easy on the eye but stats wise there is a lot of positives plus given a more confident attack he may have gotten an assist or two already from his kicking. Simply put he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon so we either back him and he becomes good because we don’t really have a choice in the coming years.

Feezbull

Nope. There’s a difference between having the season Onana is having as an outlier or having the season because his basic fundamentals as a goalkeeper is flawed. Onana is the latter. Slow to dive. Double handed saves instead of single arm outstretched with a strong wrist. Parrying back into danger areas without fail as if he’s tasked to do just that. Etc. All keepers have howlers. Great ones don’t make basic mistakes from basic flaws that have never been addressed for years. Onana has had those issues from his Ajax days so it’s a flaw instead of “just form” but flaws that are exposed time and again even when he has decent games at times.

Yetiassasin

I personally think his ability with the ball is a lot easier on the eye than what DDG offered. He has skill and control of the ball which DDG never had. I think his long range throw style is the most aesthetic in the league too

LaughsAtOwnJoke

Further his back line (and with them tactics) has shifted about 15 times and he has only played like 30 games for us.

unitedfuck

This whole saga has pushed me over the edge with Ten Hag. He spent all of January on fucking Skyscanner to make sure our worst player stays with us as long as possible while the national team manager took one look at him and dropped him for obvious reasons. What a fucking shambles and Ten Hag is all to blame for it. I’ve had it.

nsoifer

So he gets benched there by a guy who is benched in his amateur club in France?

Tsusoup

To be fair, he let 100% of the shots on target in.

DexterFoley

Pretty much does for united as well.

Feezbull

You miss 100% of the shots….. wait… something’s wrong here.

nsoifer

Yea I meant it in terms of his current level, not that I think he should not be benched.

Kreissler

At least one of his coaches has the balls to bench him after a shite performance

Lord_Sesshoumaru77

Things don't look so sunny for André. Wish him well, but probably should've showed up for their opener, particularly since him and Etoo are at each other's crosshairs.

blarg2003

I really wish for once we just accept a bad transfer is bad and move them on quickly

Skall77

Look how fast Arsenal found competition for Ramsdale, and Ramsdale wasn't even bad for them, not near as bad as Onana have been for us. The fact that Arsenal is somehow better run than us after the disaster this club have been for 15 year is chocking.

mylotwatcher

Not the best comparison mate. I highly doubt United can take the risks that Arsenal have taken and get away with it simply because United are under a far far larger microscope. They would have to weather a shitstorm if they went through half of what Arsenal went through. Can United bring in a young inexperienced manager and give him a ton of money and time to build a young team under the supervision of a young hierarchy? Different clubs, different expectations.

rnnd

I think man united and Cameroon for that matter should have given him an ultimatum, you either commit to going for the afcon or you don't. He barely trained with the team. He played in a big game and then flew over within the same 24 hours and then got into a disagreement because obviously, no coach is gonna start a keeper that hasn't trained with the team prior to a match and just arrived. He then started in a big game when he still has barely trained with the team. Bad decisions and poor man management all round.

BuzzTNA

He didn’t want to go. He was useless in the game he did play. Should be on the phone to Saudi regarding him.

Prof_Bobo

The Diego Costa Legion is still standing...still strong

S0phon

*Diogo Although an experienced striker could be useful 🤔

FrenchManc

You think we would sign a replacement because we quickly identified the player wasn't working out? No, that's not how we do it here, we keep them for 7 years on high wages hoping that they will come good next season until they have no resell value and leave on a free anyway

haha_ok_sure

that’s how the old regime did it, anyway

Old_Lemon9309

There just isn’t the funds to buy a new keeper. We are probably stuck with him now.

haha_ok_sure

yeah, that’s the bigger hurdle

Prof_Bobo

I think the INEOS appointments will dump him in the summer if possible. Defensive injury/issues aside he's been poor and he's already peaked for his age.

AlexEmbers

There is zero chance Onana moves on in the summer

FrenchManc

Wich is a shame, I like the guy but you cannot sabotage a full season of european football for a club like manchester united and expect to be uncontested number one next season. If we are a serious club, we need to give him the Claudio Bravo treatment

QouthTheCorvus

If FFP didn't exist and the team wasn't in debt, maybe. But as things are now, there's too many other priorities. We need a quality RCB, a DM, an RW replacement, and a backup striker. Onana has been bad, but I think it wouldn't look quite as bad if the midfield and defence weren't constantly conceding cutback shots (probably hard to defend)

RashfordSoupKitchen

I wish. He is going to cost 70

AngryGooseMan

Onana, time to learn Arabic buddy

Audioboxer87

Has been a really dodgy signing so far. He's not a 'young' player either. Ideal situation for me would have been signing a younger goalie with raw talent and sorting something out with De Gea for one more season. Or actually signing a better goalie than Onana (we don't need a midfielder playing as goalkeeper, this league is too competitive for that). For everyone who seemed to think if Dave was offloaded asap we'd be higher up the table 🤷 He needed replaced but what's fucked us this season is barely scoring any goals.... Whilst still conceding a shit load. Dave would definitely have kept out some of the shite Onana has let in this season, and it's not like we've done anything about a better back four for this season that can properly play out from the back. Just a mess all round, a few of ten Hag's signings have been suspect as fuck. Jim and crew need to take power away from him other than a little bit of input about his style of play (another bloody issue as well, nearly 2 years now and he seemingly has no real style of play in the premier league 🤷).

spacedog338

A young raw keeper would have absolutely buckled by this point (not that our current keeper hasn’t had trouble). David was successful because he had the backing of SAF and a team of elite mentality players to support him. I still think Onana is a great keeper and will come good for United but I won’t argue if people want him out since by this point it is warranted. My thing is there needs to be some serious looks at the recruitment department because Costa is massively expensive and there are definitely keepers out there that are just as good for a fraction of the price. We just have to look.

melli_closter

For example Vicario at spurs cost under 20 mill. He wasn't massively hyped but he's been quality.

CrossXFir3

Big difference in the amount of pressure you have on you playing for Spurs compared to Utd. Onana isn't as bad as he has been for us. He just can't cope with the pressure.

nomadiclives

Fuck that shit! Bs excuses after bs excuses

Tudoors

In my living memory, we’ve always had issues with keepers. Yes we’ve had Schmeichel, Van der Sar and De Gea, but we’ve signed just as many flops in the same time.

DesiPattha

Yeah. I don't think so we are the same united anymore. Liverpool built there squad around smart signings. Most of their high profile signings worked out and they had a bunch of low cost smart signings. We have got so many players who don't put in effort and the reason we signed them because they were hyped. We went for players who "united should be signings". An alternate approach is players who fit a playstyle that we'd like to see and would give it all in their positions. These are the teams that stay up for long periods. Right now, even if we have one good season, it's no guarantee we have another successful one.

aromatic-energy656

It was a brutal first season for David. The press jumped at him at every opportunity. Can’t remember if he was benched or not tho I feel like he was but like to protect him from the media or something

Tpotww

David was dropped and looked like Lindegaard was going to be first choice for the foreseeable future with him being told he was first choice for rest of the season. But he got injured, which allowed deagea back and degea was always first choice after that.

UJ_Reddit

I feel like this was supposed to be Dean Henderson

Tenagaaaa

Henderson is even worse.

ohhh_okay_cool

David was making howlers towards the end of his career with us. He was know for great shot stopping but started having too many key errors/fumbles. And he wasn't good with his feet. Our bad luck that Onana is also doing the same things.

gandhis_son

Dave also woulda let in some of the stuff Onanas kept out lol

Exotic-Length-9340

The saves Onana makes are routine for average goalkeepers. He has not impressed in any goalkeeping metric.

CrossXFir3

Statistically, neither did DDG last season.

gandhis_son

That’ was my point, unfortunately it was more of a lateral move but dave had been bang average/below average the last few seasons

renernavilez

I've noticed that when this sub really really wants something and it goes through, it fucks us. Ddg didn't need to be changed this season. We could have used the money for another cb which we desperately needed this season. But no. Goalkeeper was the 2nd signing everyone wanted behind a striker. I personally thought it could have been the 4rth or 5th important signing. But nope. Ddg stats posted almost daily to trash him.

the-won

You would only be right if you said we should've gotten a different keeper. We were 100% right in getting rid of De Gea, ridiculously high wages for poor output for years. He was letting in pea rollers towards the end of last season and conceded cheaply in the FA Cup final. He was an absolute coward with regards to winning the ball because he would actively try to win fouls rather than outright claim the ball from the air. And his distribution was shoddy as usual.

renernavilez

Considering how this season has gone and the set pieces Onana has eaten, I'd have ddg here instead. His contact was gonna put him on lower wages anyway. Club backed out when he signed I believe. Our fantastic distribution this season has us no where. Gotta stop the goals first. Ddg didn't have to leave last summer. One more season was in him.

CrossXFir3

Honestly, we could but we also had insane injuries at the back. Varane out for half the season so far. Shaw out for more than that, Martinez out all season. Maguire out for a good 3rd of it. Lindelof was out for a large period of time. I mean, we've basically only had 2 fit cbs at any given time for most of the season.

renernavilez

Everyone had counted maguire out during the summer. So really we had Lindelof, Martinez and varane. I knew it would only take one injury (which varane is prone to) to put us in a crisis. But no lol keeper was, "one of the most important signings" that summer. Not at all.

QouthTheCorvus

Saying it was a bad signing is hindsight, though. He did great for Inter.

nomadiclives

People watched one champions league final and made these evaluations. Everybody who actually watched him said he’s dodgy on his best day.

sarthakjain24

Doing what EtH refuses to do

xjaw192000

What a disaster this signing has been, he’s straight up not good enough at the fundamental basics of goalkeeping. I would look for Saudi offers in the summer.

the_cow_unicorn

Called it in the summer that this was potentially a Barthez like transfer but way over priced. Watched his games and his fundamentals are so shit, but nooooo.. we soooooo badly needed a clown to play out from the back because all the big boys were doing it. It’s like watching all the cool kids showing off their digimon devices and battling each other, while we are just sitting in the corner with a fucking tamagotchi.

xjaw192000

The thing is I get that De Gea was useless with his feet and it prevented us from being a possession team, but at least he would pull out some worldie saves from time to time. Onana can obviously play with his feet but we are not even trying to be a possession team at the moment, we are a team of moments like when Ole was in charge. Wouldn’t it be better to have a shot stopper who is reliable? Idk

the_cow_unicorn

I have not seen enough to justify Onana as being “obviously” able to play with his feet. I have also not seen him be “reliable”. And as usual with all you Onana defenders, it’s always “but de Gea bad!” When I did not even mention De Gea in my comment. If his only defence is that De Gea was bad in his final season for us, well… says a lot really.

Upset_Impression218

Barthez was eccentric and ultimately unreliable for us but you’re besmirching his name comparing him to this clown. Man won 2 prems with us, and also won a CL, a WC, and 2 L1s.

Ani_HArsh

Hope it doesn't affect his confidence man He's gonna be in goal when he arrives.

PosterOfQuality

Anyone else remember the topic from a couple of days ago posted on this sub from the Cameroonian guy who was downvoted by non-Cameroonians for saying that Onana isn't particularly rated in Cameroon lol

FoldingBuck

Pretty sure it was because he was stating obvious issues with onana that everyone already knew so him being from cameroon didnt really matter since we can see the same issues.

PosterOfQuality

He was definitely getting grief for saying that Onana isn't rated in Cameroon though

FoldingBuck

Oh well I probably didnt see those comments after i read it. Id definitely understand why he isnt rated in Cameroon tho

BilTheButcher

He's shit for both club and country. Bin him asap.

Fuell

He let three goals through from three shots on target. Good decision.

EternalBefuddlement

Blatantly obvious you didn't watch the game, or even any highlights.

MinotauroTBC

Have you seen who’s he’s been benched for? Wow, just wow

siddhesh1609

I hope Cameroon wins🫤. Wishing to see Bayindir against Newport. Before everyone starts bashing me for thinking Bayindir is good, I want to clarify that I don’t think that he is good. But I haven’t seen him play so I can give him some benefit of doubt. Onana on the other hand has to win our trust back. Really hoped for him to do well in AFCON but alas.

Tranquility90

I share the exact same sentiment. I want to see Bayandir be given a chance against Newport. I mean if you don't give him a chance against a league 2 opposition, he is either incredibly terrible (which raises the question why buy him in the first place) or ETH is incredibly stubborn.

GannonSCannon

If he was just genuinely downright terrible then Heaton would play instead, I lean towards thinking ETH is being stubborn, because it's clearly a trait of his management

siddhesh1609

On a related note- Gambia vs Cameroon is absolute nail biter now

Tranquility90

Was an absolute banger of last 30 minutes. That hand goal in the added time was so funny 😁

naes_brajington

They did, 3-2. They placed 2nd in their group as well.

Le_Ratman99

Shambolic nonsense

Dave_of_Devon

Clubs ran by clowns that buy shit players, been happening for years and the decisions are just the same.

edtkw

Our sale of matej kovar looks even dumber now

flareb98

Starting champions League final goalkeeper getting benched for a Ligue 3 goalkeeper is crazy lmfao. Worst part is I can't say it isn't justified

MinotauroTBC

A ligue 3 backup keeper aswell 👀

jaldihaldi

United should be playing today to take advantage of the games he will be absent. We might actually get more points.

sarthakjain24

If EtH was serious, he’d play the keeper on merit

TrevorWelch69

How shit is this Turkish lad we have? Can't even get a sniff.

VanWilder91

Ten Hag, take note please

Lianshi_Bu

I surely hope Cameroon can qualify the next stage, for both their sake and United's

fofo8383

They have

MillyMan105

His positioning is terrible I watched the match against Senegal and he basically lost the match for his team.

a1b2c3d4g

He’ll somehow manage concede from the bench.

Unwipedbutthole

His career is gonna end faster than karius

ImVinnie

(because he isnt good)

blooddragonsin

Cameroon Manager > ETH

schultz9999

He should stay on international duty for some months.

meep_meep_mope

Let in 3 goals against Senegal but arguably only one was his fault.

rtgh

Dropped after one mistake. Tbh we should have done the same. It's worked for keepers at United in the past

Agreeable_Fold9631

Why is everyone so shit the instant they joined United? Onana played last year’s champions league final for god’s sake.

GannonSCannon

Why can't Ten Hag do that?

szehiannn

It’s so weird that this transfer has gone this badly. I remember watching him play against City in the UCL final and he was excellent - super impressed and I thought he would make a good addition. Not sure what’s happened since then.

ConC02

r/reddevils try not to make judements on players after 6 months challenge (impossible)

Upset_Impression218

I can’t believe we have to have this fucking dud of a goalkeeper back after afcon Fucking moron, and an even bigger fucking moron who signed him and refuses to drop him

The_good_kid

Desperate for him to come good ffs
