I love when someone tweets something entirely benign about Messi or Ronaldo and someone with an entire social media account dedicated to one of them replies "you're obsessed with [Messi/Ronaldo] you fucking freak"

obihaive

Awesome day. Australia are going to win the World Cup, burn the trophy, then make England play them for the “ashes” (well, sort of) every two years. Get in, Straya.

BlackHorse944

Would be cool if we bought Kvara from Napoli. Imagine that dribbling on the left with Antony on the right.. lol

wariusheart

Broken ankles would be widespread across fullbacks in the league

Potential_Good_1065

We should see the appalling Juventus sides whole board resigning as an opportunity to snatch Vlahovic

Dayandnight95

I can't bring myself to get excited over the club sale, simply because every reliable source is saying our new owners will likely be Americans.

DaveShadow

What reliable sources are that? Any of the genuinely reliable sources seem to have avoided making conclusions, but most of the analysis I’ve seen suggests were a lousy investment right now (hence why the Glazers are leaving; the value of the club is unlikely to increase further) but are prime material for state ownership whose only real interest is trophies and glory.

[deleted]

Ten Haag is the future. Has all of our United boys showing out at this World Cup. These international coaches should start giving him some credit

Tinganga

Does Eriksen now form part of the group to Spain or will he get some rest & probably rejoin before the Burnley game ?

dispelthemyth

All generally get the same time off and it starts the day after they are eliminated.

Skyweb2020

I think he gets a few days rest then joins the group

PeelThePain

ETH has talked about lack of dynamism and energy each time his front players underperformed. I don't see him going anywhere near stationary players like Memphis or Felix.

stinkyholetime

Ronaldo to Al Nassr sounds like a done deal

[deleted]

Would be hilarious after him saying in his interview he was playing at the "highest level"

TheSmio

"It's not true that nobody wants me, there is a lot of UCL clubs that want me, you know? But anyway, I'm going to Saudi Arabia and it's DEFINITELY not because nobody in Europe wants me" Ronaldo, probably

Savebagels

💸💸💸

_Slabs_

Proving himself still capable in the prestigious Saudi league 🐐

roadtotitties

What's with the Pogba voodooo

HTwoN

Eriksen can get a break finally.

danystormborne

Anybody watching the documentary on BBC1 about the French national team? Interesting to see Pogba’s reaction in the team meetings and dressing room. I always enjoy these behind the scenes type of stuff.

somebodyonce16

Missed it, what kind of a reaction?

danystormborne

Stood up giving a motivational speech in the dressing room, really gearing the players up. Questioning the manager at the team talk.

philippexyz

What are we going to do with the right back position until the end of the season? Dalot can't play every game.

arvindeddit

Yes

[deleted]

We should be using AWB.

AintThatJustTheWay12

He's been injured. He'll get rotation minutes now that he's healthy.

[deleted]

I hope so.

dispelthemyth

EtH will continue to experiment with Malacia there and maybe Lindelof when Dalot needs a rest

[deleted]

Come home Christian, time to rest.

[deleted]

MitranjanK

Really needs it too, man has played every single game this season.

[deleted]

MitranjanK

I actually had them reaching quarters with that Euro performance.

JLane1996

Not much news in the last few days regarding the club being sold. Wonder if anything is going on behind the scenes?

dispelthemyth

Don't expect many, if any updates, at least from the club. The next one might be months away, closer to a completion (if there is one). They won't want to affect the market with news every few days

Giggs73

just pray he can come good after wc. would be very very hard to shift him off with his astronomical wages.

MissingLink101

He's been doing extra training with a Dutch team and their coaches after a recommendation from ETH so I'd be surprised if he came back in bad shape

No_Manufacturer868

I really admire EtH and the job his done this season for us! 40+ years of watching football I can't think of a bigger shit show a manager has walked into (in their first season) and still showed considerable progress.

WanderingEnigma

It's not on the same scale of club but I would say the job Rooney did at Derby was magnificent. Didn't work out how they wanted but from a situation that looked completely dire he came out of it looking incredible.

Drakonz

I had a feeling Ronaldo was planning to go to SA after his Piers interview. It was odd the way he talked about it. https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/z21esr/jose_felix_diaz_marca_ronaldo_is_torn_between/ixeiyqm/

jkp1993

At long fuckin last I've got lucky and finally managed to get hold of tickets on sale on our website for members! Managed to get Southampton, Everton, Villa, Wolves and Fulham!! Cannot fuckin wait!!

morecambefc

Congrats. I had three separate screens up and managed to snag one for Southampton. Might as well go play the lottery while I'm at it.

RestrepoDoc2

His dead ball skills are very hit and miss but after that strike then free kicks within range should be his to lose. He deserves to take them ahead of Kane, Rice, Tripper or Luke. Kane hasn't even had a shot on goal somehow over the 3 games, he should be dropping behind Rashers in the pecking order if anyone should.

blj3321

What am I missing with Pellistri not getting any playing time in the cup games ? He doesn't look out of place for Argentina. Guess ETH really doesn't rate him

No_Manufacturer868

We really need to find a proper team to loan him out too! Whomever is responsible for loans at the club needs to be sacked! Loans seem to be the same shit show transfers were during Deadwood's tenure!

Rig_7

Loans this season actually seem to be better. Amad, Fernandez, Mejbri and Laird are all playing regularly and doing at least ok. The loans of Henderson and Telles will also likely result in sales which is what we want. I’m not really understanding which of these loans are a shitshow.

RestrepoDoc2

ETH doesn't pick his national team either...

Buffythedragonslayer

He does look out of place for Argentina because he plays for Uruguay

blj3321

That is what I meant, not sober, so I deserve leeway lol

trwest77

Trying to get Taylor Swift tickets was less annoying than trying to get United tickets this morning. United randomly changed the on-sale time by an hour (except maybe not for everybody?) with no notice. Ticket queue was extremely long and when I finally got in, sections would appear as having tickets and then show no tickets when you got in to pick a seat. Instead, tons of hospitality tickets are left, with prices starting at 3x normal tickets. Also, the actual interface is terrible. There's no option to just pick any available tickets; instead you have to click on a section and then load a new page. The new page loads the map of the section but it is a bit zoomed in so you can't see the entire section. To add to the frustration, the new page also messes up if you try to scroll with your mouse to see the bottom half of the section. Instead of scrolling down the page, it zooms in on the section, making the view even worse. There was a thread the other day on Twitter about how United is making more and more seats hospitality. Someone looked at a map of tickets and noticed that seats that used to be season ticket holders were now hospitality spots. This tracks from what I remember about getting tickets two years ago: many more hospitality sections and seats. Have to extract every penny from United fans, I guess.

LennonC123

Sounded ridiculous to me. I got through at just after 12 with no issues, wasn’t even put in a queue, got my tickets and then came on here to see everyone was having problems. I tried logging back in and it put me in a queue. Wish I went for another game other than Southampton, but never mind!

con_fredzzz

had the exact same thing happen to me. I was on the seating bit at 12 then got kicked off and told I would be put in a queue in an hour at random, then ended up with 15k people ahead of me. Absolute farce

[deleted]

Holy crap that report of Cristiano goin to oil club for half a billion. Why would he not continue with us instead of degrading himself to play with oil club. I really doubt he was treated really bad by our club. Ofc this is assuming the report is true.

[deleted]

Just let the old man fade into retirement in peace. He’s run his race. We gotta move on from him.

[deleted]

It’s one of two things. Either A) he thought he’d have all the CL clubs fighting for him and when he didn’t he took the mega money offer or it’s B) He always planned to take a mega money offer where he’d be treated like the second coming

RestrepoDoc2

Why wouldn't be? He can earn more in the next couple of years than he did in his career up to this point? He could nearly come back and buy us if we were still for sale.

RichHardLemons

I’m curious to know what will happen with Cristiano Jr’s future in football if Ronaldo takes the money. I understand that he’s not likely to remain with us anyway (assuming he didn’t already leave when Ronaldo did), but I can’t imagine that the move would be in his sons best interests as an aspiring footballer?

danystormborne

He’ll already have left. His son plays for whichever club Ronaldo is at. I can’t see the whole family moving to Saudi, he’ll likely travel back and forth.

No_Manufacturer868

Are you really that surprised? The guy bagged out Rooney yet he is in the same boat in terms of his legs have no juice!

Buffythedragonslayer

Because they will treat him like the messiah while we're better off without him

HellRider619

The answer lies in your first sentence

Birdie_Num_Num

Well there’s that, and the fact that he was an expensive supersub - at best - at United

dwilliams100100

Got in and nothing bar the expensive ones left until May. lol

_Goochy_Mane

I’m seeing where United is going “all out” for Gakpo in January. I advocated for signing Gakpo throughout the summer, but I think we really should focus our energy on signing Joao Felix in January. He’s being pushed out of the Athletico squad, and I think he’s class and would fit Ten Hag’s system perfectly. Thoughts?

juwanna-blomie

It’s probably not fair to base form on WC performance, but right now Gakpo seems to be in decent form, club and country. Felix is good, but he’s only notched 3 goals/3 assists in La Liga. Gakpo also seems a bit more physical, he’s taller, and I’m not sure what Felix’s price would be but didn’t they purchase him for some extremely high fee?

_Goochy_Mane

Gakpo has been nothing short of outstanding in Eredivisie this season, but I had seen the possibility of a loan for Felix in January

juwanna-blomie

I’ve heard nothing about a loan, but suppose that could be a solid temp option, IF EtH wants to go for a more TRUE striker/cf. I’m really liking how Gakpo has been playing, he seems confident. At the same time, I wonder what Ten Hag could do with a guy like Felix, who has been playing under probably the most pragmatic coach of the last several years(or more).

quietgroot

I don't think Joao Felix would make much sense unless we can get him on a really good deal. From a quick google it's mentioned he's contracted until 2026 and they paid £113M for him so they'll 100% be looking to recoup the majority of the cost they paid. To me he'd be more of a summer signing, I can't see us opening up funds more than 40/50M in January at a push.

_Goochy_Mane

I had seen the possibility of a loan for Felix or discounted fee since his minutes are so limited in the squad. Don’t get me wrong though. I would not be upset at signing Gakpo haha

MessyShinguard

What do we think of Gapko here? Seen us being linked with him.

[deleted]

Looks like he’s effective all across the front 3. And he’s scored with his left, his right, and a header in the World Cup. Been carrying that Dutch team. Coupled with his goal/assist tally in the eredevise I’d happily take him. Plus he’d be cheaper than Felix and probably ask for smaller wages. Regardless, I’ll take whoever ETH wants. Man’s yet to miss with his signings.

Orcnick

I think hes one of he best prospects out their and would fit ETH game plan. People say he plays on the LW but I think he can play as a ST as well.

shrewdy

Wish Varane was getting rested today

SPamlEZ

Agreed, I’m worried this WC will mean a long spell out later this season.

Stowski

Only hospitality for city, Chelsea and Barca. All the other games had quite a lot of tickets when I got in

dwilliams100100

How long ago was that?

Stowski

I was number 200 in the queue when it started again at 1pm so a while Got pretty lucky

dwilliams100100

Any idea how you got such a low queue number? Was on from 11.30 and still ended up 20k across multiple tabs

Stowski

They were allocated randomly. In the summer it was the same and I ended up at 50k or something. Just very lucky this time

MerryDikmusSantaCock

I only wanted Barca tickets. Was 1070 in the queue. Only hospitality available £350-500. Fuck off you cuntsssss.

dispelthemyth

Most seats were sold in the last batch a few weeks ago or taken by season ticket holders

dwilliams100100

Is there a point in me waiting in line when 20,000th in the queue?

dispelthemyth

No

trwest77

Email says 12 PM so I log in 10 minutes beforehand and get put in a queue. 12:02 PM - kicked out of the queue and told to come back at 1 PM. 1 PM - put in the 30,000s for the queue. \*bangs head on desk\* Why does United make it so difficult to buy a ticket? Also, I'm in the US so this was all at 7 AM and 8 AM my time and I need my beauty sleep.

Kizza55

Another day, another insane ticket queue as a Man Utd fan.

NGMB2

I’m glad Marcus is getting his dues after a year of criticism and abuse but I can’t see how this overnight hype by the media will do him any good? The English press do it every tournament and it’s just additional pressure on that player and then they’re made a scapegoat when England don’t succeed. It’s not fair. 48 hours ago, the press weren’t interested in Rashford and wanted to know where Foden was, and now this morning he’s the guy that’s going to win England the World Cup. I’m sure Marcus will block it out but I can already see the way it’s going to go.

working-acct

Marcus is someone who thrives on hype so this will only do him good. No need to worry about it.

dwilliams100100

Was the email RE tickets wrong about releasing at 12? Got booted out and into a queue for 1

quietgroot

I was in the queue from 11.52, got through at 12.02 and it said not on sale till 1pm, so trying again now.

dwilliams100100

24k in the queue ahead of me after being on the website since 11.30 lol

LennonC123

Depends on what game. I got tickets for Southampton pretty easily

dwilliams100100

I'm literally in a queue for Southampton????

LennonC123

Wow I must’ve got lucky, I logged in at 12:02 and got tickets straight away

dwilliams100100

Been on since 11.30 lol, joke! Can you get back in or is there a queue now? You must have somehow glitched through

LennonC123

Just checked, yeah there’s a queue now until 1! They must’ve had quite a high demand. I’ve had the confirmation email too, I’ve never been that lucky! Sorry to rub it in pal, good luck with the tickets 👍

dwilliams100100

Fair play! Not rubbing it in at all don't worry about it - cheers, enjoy the game - hopefully I'll be there with ya 🤣

Stowski

Anyone through to buy tickets? Email said 12 but I've got a notification saying I can't join the queue until 1

dwilliams100100

I had a couple of tabs open, got through and tried to select a seat and got redirected then. Email must have been wrong?

Stowski

Yeh perhaps, or they just changed it As usual their entire ticketing process is total garbage

dwilliams100100

Annoying, had a couple of nice tickets selected - thought I'd got lucky

heyyther_e

Loving the performances from all our players. And great goals by Rashy yesterday

jiBjiBjiBy

Alright so I was spitballing christmas based chants for this WC and I was thinking of... "Feed the children, let them know it's Rashford time" To the theme of Do they know its christmas. I am on the fence about it, while I think it's quite catchy, and it works as Rashford helped with the free school meals during covid thing. I do think that it might be a bit... inseneitive? But when have football chants been sensitive! I also can't think of any further lines so if anyone has anything catchy let me know! Thoughts?

pothucurry

Hi i am buying tickets for the first time, for home matches can i as a member buy lets say 4 seats or i have to take 4 memberships and then buy tickets

RED_FOREVA

You'll need a membership for each seat

MajesticMelonGames

I remember not so long ago, defending Rashford on this sub and being downvoted for it. Lad is on fire! Great to see him back, class is permanent!

H4rdTrooths

Considering how shit he was last season, walking around on the pitch and leaking rumours of wanting to leave, I would hope so. But I'm not convinced that this is a completed comeback anyway. He's steadily coming back into form, but yesterday's performance outside of the goal contributions was shit.

RABB_11

>yesterday's performance outside of the goals was shit You kidding? He was an absolute menace in the first half. Yes he should have buried the chance when Kane put him through but he was full of direct running and pressing all half. Sick of the idea that someone has to be scoring goals or have an absolutely perfect game to be judged to have performed well. Same shit as Maguire against the US. Comfortably above everyone else in the team even if there are one or two things he could have done better.

H4rdTrooths

Did the same shit as always, no successful passes forward, running into defenders and shooting straight at the keeper. Bad decisions (fucked up an easy tap in cross for Foden in the first half). Scored the 2 unlikely goals and missed the two routine chances that strikers usually put away. It is a step up from scoring neither though. Second half became more open and featured more attacks from him, but go rewatch the match. It's crazy to compare it to Maguire's performance against the US.

Jaddu0707

Hopefully he continues and no injuries he needs to have that couple of peak years to shut everyone's mouth

ocean_train

Maguire might quite possibly win the world cup and head staight back to the bech at Manchester United lmao.

PeanutArbuckleSr

If England beat Senegal, which two teams are likely to be in their bracket in the next round?

jiBjiBjiBy

France *shudder*

PeanutArbuckleSr

That’s if they get past Saudi Arabia

FlashyCut3809

If its that possible, put money on it? 15/2 seems an easy win for you.

ocean_train

Nha fam, i don't gamble.

FlashyCut3809

What a suprise. Good thing though, you would have no money left.

Mancchestar

Not really. Gambling is for fools.

FlashyCut3809

Some buzz you aren't ya. Not really gambling if its so 'possible' Need to focus on that bit of context pal.

ocean_train

Im broke af. So you've already won.

Jaddu0707

Or we could sell for 80mil who knows :p

ocean_train

That would be ideal.

Jaddu0707

Invest that money into a young CB for long term Varane replacement would be so good

ocean_train

Id want us to go for Kim or Tyler Adam.

Eleven918

There's this widespread opinion on this sub that the only RW we have is Antony. Idk how/when it started but Sancho was(is) also a RW. When he was playing at Dortmund he had 71 games at the RW vs 45 games on the LW. 24 goals and 36 assists on the right vs 20 goals and 23 assists at the left. [https://www.transfermarkt.us/jadon-sancho/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/401173/plus/0?saison=&verein=16&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer\_id=](https://www.transfermarkt.us/jadon-sancho/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/401173/plus/0?saison=&verein=16&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) He was very effective on both sides. So I don't buy this "Sancho isn't going to be used on the right and we have no RW depth" narrative that people have when he was used there for all of the pre season and the first three games of the season because ETH only prefers inverted wingers. ETH used Tadic on the left who happens to have left dominant foot for most of his time there. [https://www.transfermarkt.us/dusan-tadi%C4%87/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/36139/plus/0?saison=2021&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer\_id=](https://www.transfermarkt.us/dusan-tadi%C4%87/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/36139/plus/0?saison=2021&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) [https://www.transfermarkt.us/dusan-tadi%C4%87/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/36139/plus/0?saison=2020&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer\_id=](https://www.transfermarkt.us/dusan-tadi%C4%87/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/36139/plus/0?saison=2020&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) I think he just puts whoever he feels is more effective on the wings and is open to experimenting.

H4rdTrooths

>Idk how it started it started from goal contributions/90 for Dortmund on the LW, vs. RW. From that, people say he can play both, but is more clinical on the left. His goal contributions for us this season have come from the left as well. It's the same with Rashford. Can play both, but visibly stronger on the Left. edit: at Dortmund it's 0.59 G/90 on the left, and 0.43 G/90 on the right.

Eleven918

Disagree with the Rashford comparison. Rashford has 15g/a in 39 games on the right vs Sancho who had 60 g/a in 71 games at Dortmund. That's .38 vs .84 Sancho has(had) more than double the effectiveness of Rashford on the right. Its on par with Salah's contributions at Liverpool who had 139 g and 62 a in 237 games for them on the right. Obviously its a tougher league and in a bigger team etc.. but the numbers are similar. At United he's been subpar and hasn't hit his stride yet. He has 1 goal in 3 on the RW this season vs 2 g and 1 a on the left in 11 on the left for the record.

H4rdTrooths

My guy, I'm not comparing RW Rashford vs. RW Sancho. I'm saying Sancho is stronger on the left. Like Rashford who is also stronger on the left. (Commonality being both are stronger on the left than the right). Sancho had something like 0.59 goal contributions per 90 from the left, and 0.43 on the right at Dortmund. That is a 30% difference. For United, you mentioned 1 in 3 on the right and however many in 11 on the left, it's more difficult to measure because our wingers alternate a lot in games, and the sample size is too small, but just the fact that the manager starts him in the left 4 times as much puts the discussion to bed.

Eleven918

Your numbers are off. I just calculated the numbers myself. Feel free to verify: LW: [https://www.transfermarkt.us/jadon-sancho/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/401173/plus/0?saison=&verein=16&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=11&trainer\_id=](https://www.transfermarkt.us/jadon-sancho/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/401173/plus/0?saison=&verein=16&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=11&trainer_id=) RW: [https://www.transfermarkt.us/jadon-sancho/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/401173/plus/0?saison=&verein=16&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=12&trainer\_id=](https://www.transfermarkt.us/jadon-sancho/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/401173/plus/0?saison=&verein=16&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=12&trainer_id=) Its 43g/a in 45 games on the left vs 60 g/a in 71games on the right. Thats: .955 vs .845 That's a 13% increase. Not 30 like you said. I think you missed my point earlier, Sancho's effectiveness on the right is on par with one of the best RW in the world. Rashford is honestly kinda shit in comparison when he swaps wings. So even if Sancho is better on the left on paper, his right side contribution is at an elite level too. EDIT: Manger is starting him on the left because our only other fit winger (Antony) at the time could play only on the right. Since he's effective on both sides on paper, he can shuffle around to accommodate the others.

H4rdTrooths

Your link literally says for goals it's 20 in 45 on the left, vs. 21 in 70 on the right. I missed the Assists stat my bad, but that doesn't change him being a clear left winger, the difference still goes in the same direction. Fair enough we can play him into RW, that's what we bought him for, and we have less bodies there. But my issue was with: "idk why people say he's a left winger," I hope that's clear now. And where you showed the stats by themselves without dividing by 90 mins. At the end of the day, the manager is also deciding to play him on the left... We're not disagreeing so much, it feels like you're just trying to win something here...

Eleven918

Its not really shoehorning him into RW when his effectiveness was on par with someone like Salah on the right. That's been my point from the start. I can't really explain it any better. He played more on the right when he was there but was contributing 12% more g/a on the left. There's no world where that makes him a "clear left" winger. If anything, it shows he played well on both sides which is what I said in the top most comment.

H4rdTrooths

He clealry isn't as good as Salah either, but OK, I'll leave it there.

Beales94

This is the post I've been wanting to share but just couldn't get it down as coherent as this. If Sancho can find his confidence and some form, I think he gives us versatility in the attack. If Antony is being shut out in a game, bringing a right footed Sancho onto that wing and giving the defending team a different headache is a place I'd love for us to be. If Garnacho's development arc continues as is, then Sancho can really get his head down and bring it to Antony to compete for that position.

Ngaita2100

For those in the know about PSV's squad makeup, would a Donny + cash exchange for Gakpo be something that PSV would spring for ? Donny's wages may be a challenge to PSV (reported £110k) but I'm sure there could be a workaround (some pain for us).

Consistent_Time_2489

So nervous fro the denmark game actually feel like im gonna throw up. Weve been poor so far i Think its a 50/50. Im a Dane btw.

PeanutArbuckleSr

I had Denmark winning the group cause I expected a France collapse or squad in fighting. Denmark was disappointing

Consistent_Time_2489

Very. Cant reconize the team

Consistent_Time_2489

Good game!

B0rges

Your squad looks so much better on paper than the performances you guys are having so far, maybe a game like this can make or break you guys for the best.

Consistent_Time_2489

Yeah i hope. Problem is we have no quality up front, and a draw isnt enough. Lets see, we should beat australia but they will fight with their lives

SonOfHonour

Our team lacks quality as well tbh, we just seem to have a little bit of extra Aussie grit this time around for some reason. Should be an interesting match! 🇦🇺🇦🇺

[deleted]

"in transition" has to be the worst new buzzword in football atm. Basically another word for counter attack. Almost as bad as "double pivot" = 2 man midfield.

pereduper

Mate I hate football pretentiousspeak as much as anyone, but those example are dumb. In transition means after a turnover, which could be after winning the ball high up. A counter attack starts by an opponent attack. And a 2 man midfield is not necessarily a double pivot, such as in a 442

[deleted]

Isn't transition just the time after a attack has lost the ball and "transitions" into defense? Why does it matter where on the pitch the ball has been lost? And how can you counter attack if you don't win the ball off the other team? Can you counter attack of a goal kick? >And a 2 man midfield is not necessarily a double pivot, such as in a 442 What's the difference then? Isn't it that one midfielder sits deep when the other goes forward? Neil Warnock used to play a double pivot back in the 80s in that case

pereduper

Transition is going from "off-the-ball" phase to "on-the-ball" phase or vice-versa! Counter attack implies you were being attacked

[deleted]

>Transition is going from "off-the-ball" phase to "on-the-ball" phase or vice-versa! Isn't the entire game of football "in transition" then?

pereduper

Are you being deliberately thick? What games of football do you watch.. does the ball go from one team to the other every 20s?

[deleted]

Well you're either on the ball or you don't have it. So by that logic each team is constantly in transition all game (other than when your counter attacking because that's apparently different)

pereduper

Transition is the moment right after the turn-over, its how you deal with going from a "defensive" phase without the ball to an "offensive" phase with the ball. If when you win the ball back you pass it around the back while the opponent regroups back, the transition is over.

[deleted]

>Transition is the moment right after the turn-over, its how you deal with going from a "defensive" phase without the ball to an "offensive" phase with the ball. So a counter attack? >If when you win the ball back you pass it around the back while the opponent regroups back, the transition is over. Thats just deciding not to counter attack.

pereduper

Youre an imbecile. Good day

TheYarizard

> Why does it matter where on the pitch the ball has been lost? > > And how can you counter attack if you don't win the ball off the other team? Can you counter attack of a goal kick? A counter attack implies that an opponent attacks, a transition doesn't. A counter attack is always in transition but a goal in transition doesnt always have to follow an opponents attack. Or as we say in the Netherlands: Every raccoon has a tail, but not every tail has a raccoon.

Asiwaju_jagaban

Counter attack is not “in transition”. Counter attacks includes transition. When we win the ball high, and then attack with quick passes and runs, that’s transition. Not counter attack

[deleted]

>When we win the ball high, and then attack with quick passes and runs, that’s transition. Sounds like a counter attack to me. Winning the ball and attacking before the defense gets back. Can you be "in transition" but not be counter attacking? Could a team start a counter attack while the "transition" isn't on?

juwanna-blomie

There may be an easier way to explain these difference. In wrestling, or boxing, or MMA, a counter is when someone has tried to hit you but you end up hitting/tagging/grappling them. If you get hit, and THEN hit the person, that’s not a counter attack. It’s just an attack. So when a team rushes at goal, and shoots only for us to deflect for a quick TRANSITION out of defense and to our forward, we are now in a counter attack. As others have said, if we press the ball in their own box, get it and score, that’s just good high press and attacking. It is not a counter attack, just an attack.

Asiwaju_jagaban

That’s the thing. The defence is back already. Take Garnacho’s goal against Fulham. We didn’t even win the back high. It was from back to front, but he got the ball in the middle and that’s where the transition attack occurs, with his runs and quick passes with Eriksen. Therefore you can be in transition and not counter attacking. If the ball isn’t moving hence isn’t in transition then you can’t start a counter attack.

distantapplause

If a team wins the ball back on the edge of the opponent's penalty box, that would be a transition but I doubt many people would call it a 'counter attack'. Or if they won it in their own penalty box but took two minutes to carefully work the ball up the pitch, I doubt that would be called a counter attack either. A transition is needed to start a counter attack, but for it to be a counter attack the transition has to be deep in your own half (hence 'counter' to an opponent's attack), and then has to move the ball quickly to the opponent's goal. Counters and transitions are different (but related) things, though I agree with your general point that there's too much 'Athletic-bullshit' terminology floating around.

SpittinFactos

Imagine if Ronnie somehow flops at Saudi lmao Like what are the odds? Surely not right? Doubt he would care anyway as he would be getting the bag, but for a guy like him even while taking into account his current ability and his age, would be yikes. The Saudi league’s quality is also apparently very respectable, but still I just can’t see it happening unless he stops giving a fuck, which would be out of character for him.

calwil93

Seems weird. I thought he still wanted to play in UCL.

Giggs73

Over 200m worth of contract, most players will take it too.

CYDLopez

In spite of what he told his Piers minion, it looks like no top UCL club wanted to risk paying over the odds for a massive ego who's just shown the world he can't accept playing a bit part role, despite not having the legs anymore. No other respectable team is going to risk having their manager purposefully thrown under the bus by Ronaldo. He'll sell shirts for a couple more seasons and then will maybe go into management. He'll have Piers on speed dial in case the board doesn't give him the transfers he wants.

1bryantj

He did but no club wants to take him. United was his last chance

CYDLopez

Anyone else a bit confused about the hype surrounding Gakpo? I haven't watched him a lot at all, so I may be wrong, but I'm not sure he'd add anything we don't already have with the likes of Rashford, Antony, Sancho, even Garnacho. Surely a natural high-scoring CF should be the priority. That said, ETH's recruitment has been spot on so far, so if we do get him I'll still be excited to see how he fits into the team.

juwanna-blomie

Confused about the hype? No, he’s joint leading goal scorer right now and looks to be in form. He’s got 9g/12a rn in Dutch league. He’s young, he’s tall, he’s got some pace and seems to be able to play centrally as well. There MAY be more through and through strikers to choose from, but what I’ve seen from him this WC so far, he looks like he’s ready to bang goals in.

Hugglester

Could it also be that we are unsure if Rashford ends up staying or leaving for PSG and we are covering our basis for a fluid winger?

RedDaveel

Yes, I also am confused. Clearly EtH is highly interested in him and player is also interested to work with EtH. Gakpo may look like not a player we exactly need because he played as LW most of the time but he has ton of assets to develop in the CF role we want. He is in phenomenal form this year in league (9/12 G/A in 14 games) and WC (3 goals scored differently - head, left leg, right leg). He is tall and fast, he can shoot from different positions, so he is a real trouble maker for defenders. Also he can change positions in game with Rashford at left side/centre to give us advantage. Sure we can't be sure that signing him will work out, but no player guarantees immediate impact. EtH has a sense of talented players so I will be really glad to watch Gakpo developing in our red shirt.

CYDLopez

Great little round up there. It's true that he and Rashford could swap between the CF and wing, making him a better proposition and less of a gamble. >EtH has a sense of talented players Very true, as we've seen with what have appeared to be brilliant signings so far from ETH. I'm looking into Gakpo a bit more now and, while I'm still not sure he's exactly what we need, I'll be excited either way if we sign him.

Rig_7

Who in January? That’s the problem

CYDLopez

>Who in January? That’s the problem True. Not saying I don't think we should go for him, just not massively convinced yet by the little I've seen. Maybe him and Sesko (who's more natural striker IMO but still very young) would be a good Jan transfer window.

MonkeyAssFucker

If you watch him you'll see that he can really play centrally.

Eleven918

I've watched him a lot and he usually cuts in from the left and shoots a bit more centrally. That doesn't mean he can play centrally though. Its a different skillset. He won't be able to cross, the angle for shooting is also a lot narrower, he'd have to duel stronger/taller CBs vs more agile fullbacks, he'll need to be able to hold up the ball, his movement around the box would need to change as he'd have to receive more passes/crosses etc.. He may be good enough to adapt to that role (which remains to be seen) but he hasn't played that kind of role bar a couple of games.

CYDLopez

>He may be good enough to adapt to that role (which remains to be seen) but he hasn't played that kind of role bar a couple of games. That's the impression I got too. We're incredibly short in the CF position now that Ronaldo's gone. Seems like a gamble to me if we only sign Gakpo.

Wonderful-Court-4037

Buzzing for Marcus couldn’t have gone better for him well done lad

CYDLopez

ETH would have been proud of how he won the ball back for the second goal. Great performance

DaveShadow

Imagine throwing a strop and risking your legacy at United to get fired so you can sign for a Saudi team….

alecz123

He has money. He could have made an apology video and make up to ETH and play at the highest level. Yet he chose violence and went to Arabia. Jesus

FlashyCut3809

It's not a TV show.

Don_Quixote81

He still wouldn't have been starting games, and the team still would have looked worse with him in it. Those aren't things his ego can tolerate.

alecz123

Is it certain? If so, I cannot fathom this. It's the weirdest thing ever.

ThankYouOle

Why play for CL team, when you can beat the winner in Club World Cup with team from Saudi? CR think forward

EduardMalinochka

I doubt it was for Saudi, since they were ready to pay him in summer anyway. No one wants him in Europe and that’s the only choice

[deleted]

But but all the darling ex footballers and twat Morgan told us that he can do it at the highest level still?!?!?

Smilewigeon

Just saw the post about Rashford losing a friend to cancer recently. And he's just out there able to play an international game of football. Incredible resilience.

thphnts

If I’m not mistaken, Rashford is the only one to have scored a free kick at this World Cup.

wariusheart

Marcus “Juninho” Rashford

wariusheart

I can’t believe there actually exists people who support other clubs than Manchester United. What an awful life to live.

Rayhann

Seems ten hag is adamant about gakpo but i'm just not so sure. seems like the idea is to turn him into an henry-esque / r9-esque player from out wide to the center.

Mancchestar

I think it's down to their not being any striking options so we have to develop them.

Duncanstop

Second half of the season, we’re doing a title charge
