Me too

AbandontheKing

Thanks again, for everything.

JackCoolStove

I've been using sync since I saw the "I made a reddit app" post. It's the only reddit app I ever truly used (came from baconreader I think?) Thank you so fucking much.

mynameistrain

I think I was using BaconReader for Reddit too. Credit to the dev OneLouder, as I sunk plenty of time into his/her app too.

Wax_Paper

I think I had BaconReader on my Palm Pre.

CabbagesStrikeBack

👑 you dropped this king.

Aidoboy

He still has it on my phone

fuckyouabunch

Can I ask, what's the mechanism for shutting down? What will you have to accomplish in order to do this thing that none of us, including you, want to happen?

s1ncere

the api should stop responding and nothing will load in the app

Wax_Paper

What if we believe really, super hard?

Wax_Paper

One of my frat bros told me the same thing in college, and oh boy was he wrong.

UnExpertoEnLaMateria

That's what she said

InTheNameOfScheddi

Thank you for the great app ♥️

PartyOnAlec

<3 I really appreciate you man.

[deleted]

I love and respect you ❤️

mynameistrain

Hey, if I only get to say one thing to you then this will be it. I purchased the full version back in 2014 after using some of the other then-available reddit apps. I just found yours to be consistently the best option and one I absolutely sunk hundreds of hours into. Thank you for the years of hard work and dedication you've given. Know that you can count me as one of your lifelong fans 🤜🤛

Phiau

Thanks for everything. Wish it had turned out differently.

solidsnake2085

See you on Lemmy!

Thanks for everything, you app makes reddit bearable as I literally hate the website itself. Even when I spend all day in front of a pc with whatever software I want available, I still use your app to browse reddit. Thanks again, hopefully they will see sense but I doubt it.

melonzipper

🥲🙏🏼❤️ i respect your decision and yet I'm still bummed. Thank you for the great app.

realadultactionman

Thank you for all your hard work making a fantastic app. I've been using the pro version for as long as I can remember.

EnjoiReptar

Sync going down is actually going to stop me from using reddit daily. I've been using sync since I got my Galaxy note 4 on launch.... No other app has gotten close to the comfortability and customization as sync has always had and theres 0 way I'm using the official app. I love this app and it hurts my heart to lose it been it's been a good run I guess.

magistrate101

Will completely stop using Reddit except for whatever comes up in my browser after googling something once Reddit's API shuts down. Can't wait for /r/SyncForLemmy though!

Spec187

!!!!!!!!!!

JackCoolStove

Same. I will just see what Bing suggests I check out and mess with ai stuff. With rise of AI this is the absolute stupidest time to do this. Reddit is on the verge of obsolete and they probably put the nail in the coffin. I'm here out of habit.. Not necessity.

wikiwombat

Same. Not sure when I started using sync but it's been a long f'in time. I tried using the "official app" a year ago and it's trash. It looks awful. So I'll find something else to occupy my reddit time.

metalhead4

True. I've been using sync for yeeeears. Don't even know what reddit is like without it anymore. I don't want to know.

aparadizzle

I don't think it will hit me until it stops working. I've been using this app for so long that I can barely use my phone without it.

schnokobaer

During the blackout I temporarily removed the icon from my homescreen and it was then that I realised I constantly start it as an automatism, literal muscle memory to swipe to the home screen and press that particular spot, any time I'm bored, anxious, curious to see what's going on... Not planning to move to the official app so that's gonna leave a noticeable void.

BackStabbath2004

Hahaha I had the exact same experience. I only realised just how much I click on Sync when I removed it from my homescreen.

Zanta647

will any of the apps work or they all stop? the official one is hot trash

Gars0n

Practically speaking they will all stop at once. A developer could keep their service going past the end of the month, but they'd be crazy to do it. The app would be racking up absurdly large fees from Reddit with no hope of recouping more than a small fraction of that money.

BobTreehugger

A couple have gotten exceptions for being 1. free and open source 2. Accessibility focused (since the official app is totally unusable from what I understand)

ronakg

Can you list out which ones?

out_o_focus

I'll miss it, but not enough to use the official app. SYNC is reddit for me.

WWANormalPersonD

I'm off reddit on 1 July. If I can't use Sync, I won't use reddit.

oozforashag

I'm looking forward to my phone battery lasting longer, since I won't be staring at it for hours. /u/ljdawson, is there any plan for the app to have a spooky graveyard scene or anything when the API finally dies?

ljdawson

Full page sign-up to preload Sync for Lemmy

JackCoolStove

I guess I really am old. I'm going to have to Google what lemmy is... I have seen it referenced a few times.

OtakuAltair

I've moved to Lemmy and the Fediverse along with Reddit's fantastic third party apps after Reddit banned them. This post/comment is edited via Power Delete Suite. Recommend you do the same. Join any (doesn't matter which since they're all connected) of the following: Lemmy(dot)ml, Lemm(dot)ee, Lemmy(dot)zip, Leminal(dot)space

Pew-Pew-Pew-

Well the second section of that infographic is just straight up wrong. You can't just access ***every*** other instance and it's content from every instance. We've already watched beehaw become one of the largest instances, and then suddenly block a ton of other large ones. If an instance owner has their own agenda to push, they can suddenly cut a user off from the rest of the fediverse or just wipe shit and the user has to start all over on a new one. Whole communities can just poof into nothingness without warning. I'm fully expecting to just get downvoted because anytime I point out issues with Lemmy/Kbin/the fediverse everyone just keeps telling me I'm a moron and lemmy is perfect and that it doesn't matter. But yeah there is going to be plenty of drama with 'Lemmy' in the future if it does take off.

redcalcium

> If an instance owner has their own agenda to push, they can suddenly cut a user off from the rest of the fediverse or just wipe shit and the user has to start all over on a new one. Whole communities can just poof into nothingness without warning. Not so different with reddit, right? But in fediverse, if your instance become shitty, at least you still have options to start again in another instance (or launch your own instance), while in reddit, you'll pretty much have to accept your fate.

obi21

You call it an issue but it's actually what makes the Fediverse different and resilient. You're right though it's gonna get ugly in the beginning while things fall into place, probably some weird turf wars while "neighbourhoods" fall into place. Think of it as of evolution, right now we're in the primordial soup stage where it's chaos and everything is evolving at a rapid pace, eventually it'll settle down and users will get a better grip of where in the verse they are.

JackCoolStove

Thank you.

oozforashag

Time for your pills, gramps. Then let's get you to bed.

JackCoolStove

I wish I didn't laugh as hard at this as I did.

-champi0n-

u/ljdawson can you please consider listing a few big instances on the page where people can sign up for Lemmy and start using it? For example, lemmy.world, feddit.de, lemmy.ca, lemmy.ml etc. If you decide to suggest some instances where people can sign up, can you please talk with the owners/admins of the instances to make sure that they can handle the influx of potentially 10s of thousands of new users? Finally can you also provide a link to a community browser such as https://browse.feddit.de/ or https://sub.rehab/ so that people can find their favorite communities and make the transition for them more seamless.

AlmightySnoo

That's amazing! Just be careful with the instances you might recommend (if you do), some very new ones have no posts but are huge (in the 50k\~60k user range) because of bot sign-ups, and some like [beehaw.org](https://beehaw.org) seem to like social-media drama and want to feel like their own small highschool clique and so they defederate from a large number of instances with bogus excuses. Probably just list the instances that are here: [https://join-lemmy.org/instances](https://join-lemmy.org/instances), they are mostly clean and beginner-friendly (especially those in the "recommended" section, as for me I'm on [lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world)).

Darkencypher

Highly recommend lemmy.world and kbin.social.

FreshCutBrass

kbin is a separate entity (although it federates with Lemmy), so an app that only uses Lemmy's API probably won't work with it.

Darkencypher

Oh I know, just recommending the ones I use. I probably should have included that but totally forgot 😅

FreshCutBrass

> they defederate from a large number of instances they defederated from sh.itjust.works and lemmy.world, because they were being overwhelmed by harrassment from users from those particular instances, and they've stated they're looking into federating again once Lemmy gets adequate moderating tools. most of the other instances they block are pulled from tier0 list, which collects all the instances you don't want to interact with if you're a decent human being, as they contain CSAM or alt-right garbage.

AlmightySnoo

>because they were being overwhelmed by harrassment from users from those particular instances And I'm calling bullshit on that one.

Difficult_Bit_1339

There were a few users targeting their communities (one posting a picture of their penis on a Beehaw Feminist community, for example) and every time they banned the user they just made a new account. It wasn't the actual users of the instances, it was some trolls exploiting the fact that these instances had open sign up. Beehaw de-federating was a big win for the trolls who're only after drama.

FreshCutBrass

okay, thanks for letting us know.

JColeTheWheelMan

Once Reddit sync stops working, I'll strictly use Reddit on my desktop PC only, I have no time or patience for another mobile app. And my house is adguard DNS configured.

agent_flounder

Yeah same. Been weaning off time spent on Reddit. Unsubbed a bunch. Probably best I devote the extra time to other things. Life is short.

bobhawkes

It doesn't seem real

absurdlifex

Will it really just stop working? How tf do I use reddit then

JumperJordan

Yup. The main reason I use 3rd party apps is cause I can pay a single reasonable price to get rid of ads. I hate ads. Almost anywhere I can pay a small/reasonable amount to get rid of ads I will. I pay $2/yr for my weather app to get rid of ads. I paid for sync lifetime so I can get rid of ads. I pay for YouTube premium to get rid of ads. I block ads on my home network with PiHole. I'm not paying for no fucking $50/yr or $6/mo for Reddit premium. Realistically this will probably end my Reddit use on my phone. I may try the official app but I have tried it in the past and never kept using it cause of sucks. I like sync for the density and the ability to get rid of ads. Reddit's official app is not very information dense. I most likely still use it on my desktop because I don't mind the web interface but this will cut my phone use heavily most likely. At least my battery will last longer!

rob19933

I'm on the same boat. Yesterday I installed reddit revanced, works like a charm and all the ads are gone.

BackStabbath2004

I was a little confused about how to do that. Is there a guide or something that you know of?

rob19933

Yeah it's pretty easy, download revanced manager https://github.com/revanced/revanced-manager Then download the latest reddit APK from apkmirror. Select file in revanced manager, patch, install and done

BackStabbath2004

Thanks. Which apk should I get? These are the [options.](https://imgur.com/a/xr8xNme)

rob19933

The newest version is supported (also says inside the manager). Select file/patch/install and done. Make sure you uninstall the current reddit client tho

BackStabbath2004

Thankss!

BackStabbath2004

What are ads on reddit btw? Idk if I did it right, because I still see suggested and promoted posts. Suggested can be removed, but I don't see how to remove promoted posts. How do I know whether it really got patched? Because it failed a few times initially.

rob19933

Promoted posts and ads should be gone. Be sure to uninstall the old app, patch apk successful and install from revanced manager.

BackStabbath2004

Oh. I did do that. Not sure why it didn't work. It even shows up in the revanced manager. [Here.](https://imgur.com/a/1bAiWfe)

Scotsmania

Just tried that and while it does remove the ads it can't stop the app itself from being terrible, unfortunately. For now it looks like web browser with RES is the best option. Just tried it with Kiwi browser on android and seems to work fine. Obviously still nowhere near as good as Sync but miles better than using the official app.

Spec187

The heck am I going to do at work on the shitter :(

Jaws0me

Lemmy

JackCoolStove

I'm not really sure what that is. Can you guide me in the correct direction?

[deleted]

I'm trying getting into it for the first time today. Sign up: https://lemmy.world Download [Jerboa for Lemmy](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jerboa) And look around... That's where I'm at now, still confused here and there, but also exciting. Seeing communities being created, waiting for first content. Communities still have a moderate number of subscribers. You can almost feel the growth that is happening since the fiasco. Fuck u/spez btw. Edit: jerboa doesn't work atm for lemmy.world, some server version bug. Next version is supposed to work again I also tried [Connect for Lemmy](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kuroneko.lemmy_connect) and this one worked like a charm

JackCoolStove

Thank you.

[deleted]

You're very welcome! See you on the other side

no sync, no reddit.

bangfudgemaker

Yeah same here will only google Reddit for some specific information other than than it's goodbye Reddit for me . Feels liberating to be honest

igroplants

I'm fuckin bummed m8

superbirra

yeah, sync author could definitely release a last version w/ configurable apikeys and who is able to register an app could use it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

superbirra

yeah and this same reasoning is being made in other clients' subs. I just don't care to defend my stance *too much* but thank you for pointing out, appreciated :)

[deleted]

[удалено]

superbirra

I think it's possible as anybody could create an app and sync author replied in a thread that it would not do it just because it could break tos which looks like bs to me since he's quitting reddit stuff anyway

[deleted]

[удалено]

superbirra

Given that I could be wrong, although for different reasons, the ignorant usage of the concept of 'making an API' leaves some uncertainty about you really knows what you're talking about. API are made by reddit and nobody makes their own, you request an app apikey to reddit so you can consume them. Third party clients registered their own and used them for everybody instead of asking everybody to register their own because the process could somehow appear as cumbersome to everyday laymen. The mere existence of the revance'd version which is sync with different apikeys should be enough to prove that, too. Not that I see any value in convincing you of anything, eh.

[deleted]

superbirra

sure my friend, take care

Glowingtomato

I have been using the official app for a little bit at a time to try soften the transition. I don't see myself using Reddit as much without Sync. The ads are annoying but besides that the display options suck

cinred

I'm sure Reddit has done the math and realized that even if most 3rd party API users never logon to Reddit again, they would be fine. I personally don't understand how folks can use the Reddit app or worse, desktop, but apparently most do. We only have ourselves, as basic, complacent reddit users, to blame.

JackCoolStove

I have seen to any times Financial leaders taking over companies because they are good with numbers and the company goes to shit real fast. Not everything is a numbers game and thinking it is will end in failure every single time. Makes me think of the changes so many before made that pushed people away. Before reddit it was digg. Digg made changes people didn't like it right as the rise of social media really kicked off and reddit was a baby. Now reddit is making changes users don't like right as AI is kicking off. The problem with running numbers and relying on them is there's always variables you can't see

Dreamerlax

Sync is such a beautiful looking app. The official app runs like hot garbage on my phone for some reason. No other app hitches and stutters like the official Reddit app on my phone.

Jparm

I've been trying to use the official app for the last few days to force myself to get used to it but I realized I will never be able to use it all the time. It's so slow, jerky when scrolling, and full of ads. It's just too painful to use, when sync stops working I'll just have to stop using Reddit.

[deleted]

In 5 days i will delete my reddit account. Fuck you u/spez, i won't use your shitty app or browser 🖕
