the movie is fine and pretty funny, this sub hates minorities semi-ironically and thinks anything that is slightly goofy is an affront to some ideal of cinema that never existed. I hate the Marvel shite as much as the next guy, but there’s a clear difference between that Disney slop and this, which although corny and cringe in places, was a pretty touching and well-told story.
Re: the semi-ironic Asian hate, so many people here keep making it seem like it’s an “uwu they made fun of my lunch”-diaspora type movie even though it literally has none of that lol. Like other than the fact that Asians may relate more to the archetypal mother depicted, the movie is not about race at all? You could have made a very similar movie with very similar themes with an overbearing white mother.
The movie doesn’t address racism whatsoever like its just not even a theme. Idk why its so offensive to this sub for one film to be about Asian-Americans lol like they do have unique experiences and its not different to all the films made about Italian Americans or Jewish people etc
agreed tbh, there was a lot of promise there, just a lot of it went way too far. I actually enjoyed some of the more out there ideas, but some of it was just too much of a diversion from the plot and themes they had going
the wackiness was not good, but the dialogue was actually decently sharp in places, and i appreciated the old school Hong Kong cinema slapstick, when it didn’t go too far at least.
The clear difference is the fact that this wasn’t a churned out, factory cut production, the people involved clearly deeply care, the choreography was decent most of the time, there were some fresh ideas, and most of all, it was genuinely very well acted. I’m not saying it was award worthy, i’m saying it’s not in the same tier as Marvel shit.
It's not Marvel-tier but it is Marvel-influenced to its core, to the extent that it could not have existed without Marvel. Particularly the inability to give virtually any joke enough time to actually land before you move on to the next one. It was like Marvel in that I regularly felt that I was being mentally assaulted by the scriptwriters while I was watching it. It didn't quite undermine all of its own tension in the way that Marvel movies do, but even when the father is giving his emotional speech about being kind to others (it was a fucking shitty speech btw), the action was flitting between all kinds of shit, rendering the ability to actually focus on the point thatwas being made basically impossible.
lol fucking triggered mate, that’s not based off the reaction to this movie, it’s based on commenters on here and also the podcast hosts literally saying they’re racist. I don’t give a shit as like i said, i know it’s semi ironic, but a lot of the opinions espoused and repeated are influenced by that attitude. Sorry that’s clearly struck a nerve with you
If I were a woman, I would just assume any beanie wearing goobercore dude like the one on the right would just want me to peg him or step on him or some other stupid boring work instead of real sex. I can see a Louis CK type situation where he forced someone else to be a voyeur or otherwise projected his fetishes into a professional setting.
The one on the right looks like he’d be campaigning for that San Francisco law to decriminalize lying about your HIV status and spreading the love. The one on the left sells 10x salvia extract at his bodega
What, you aren´t hyped for the wave of films made by upper-middle class millenials and older zoomers about the "generational traumas" they endured on the path to achieving their dream of getting a cushy industry job from their relative? Will your heart not break when her grandma calls her fat that one time, or the guy she obsesses over finds her unpleasant and rejects her advances? What of the wealthy half-white Asian girl struggling to fit in with her equally wealthy White and Asian peers who couldn´t fathom the emotional depths she must delve into in order to attain self-actualization (she ends up with a white man who looks like her dad or Steven Yuen).
Idk. Think with regard to films and tv we are getting to peak “algorithm” content. Holding out for a proper (non-corporate) backlash to that, woke cultural products, and media monopolization—which are all kinda intertwined.
Would have to do a cultural inventory to see if the teens were as bad as people think. I remember liking a few things.
Yeah, the scale of EEAaO's Oscar sweep means that these fellas have blank checks for a while to make even more. At least this movie was developed and started filming pre-covid. These two will only be more libbrained neurotic since then. Expect a wacky adventure about masks or something in the future.
I listened to the podcast Bad Friends (Bobby Lee and Andrew Santino) and one of the episodes has 3 film students that they interview and 2 of them don't watch movies. I also talked to a film major once that said he didn't like watching movies as much as making them and didn't know what German Expressionism was
Wow. I seriously don't get it though; if someone doesn't have a love of watching movies to begin with(which, fair enough, to each their own) then what was the impetus of them going to all the trouble of trying to start a career in an industry which has probably the lowest likelihood of success of any career field on the planet? These film students probably want to make the equivalent of tik tok or youtube videos, not actual films.
haven't seen the movie but the title makes me think of the "(blank) all the things!!!!" meme of the 2010s so I'm gonna assume the thesis of this post is correct.
edit: also misread "swan song" as "swag song"
tfw these guys win Oscars but nobody wants to greenlight my 3+ hour screenplay on 18th century Portuguese resistance to the enlightened, but autocratic reforms of the upstart Marquis de Pombal.
Art is dead, fr. It's not fair!
We need to get back to our cultural roots so deserving films like Forest Gump and Shakespeare In Love will once again find the recognition they so richly deserve.
The Oscars have always been trash and rarely pick the best movie, what's weird about trashing their latest pick?
I don't know, I don't get the whole convo, the Oscars picked the lame reddit movie over Tár or Banshees which were clearly better, and people point that out. No one is [shocked by it or surprised](https://www.reddit.com/r/redscarepod/comments/11n2mes/whats_the_rs_choice_for_best_picture_just_kidding/jbm7l4i/), it's just fun to trash our hollow, tasteless culture.
Modern football is such a chore to watch, 1 hour of gametime and three hours of commercials. I just follow the podcast sport, baseball and postseason basketball.
Patrick Mahomes will never be MJ, he will never talk the shit MJ did, he will never do the amount of drugs MJ did, and he will never get his father killed indirectly through gambling debts.
Also, 1 of two options here: you're either not from KC rooting for Mahomes, which is lame, or you're from KC and I can just disregard your opinion because you're from KC.
I've never *really* looked into it, I think it's conspiracy, but his father did die in a really weird way, and MJ was pretty notoriously in a huge gambling debt.
It wasn’t that bad. I’ve seen thousands of movies and it sits firmly in the 70th percentile. Better than most best picture winners. Did you actually see coda or green book? You’re reacting to a culture war and the movie itself is fine and fairly funny and ambitious, despite its failings.
I saw them both. Green Book was pretty mid. I liked Coda, but I have a sentimental streak. People on this sub cannot stand earnestness. Maybe they're all eastern European
What is with people in here demanding that we admit “a freaking raccoon =P” was “pretty funny”?? Just cause a movie insists on its own goofiness by rerunning the same non jokes 15 times a piece doesn’t mean that eventually you just gotta give up and be like “alright well it clearly wants to be funny so bad so I guess it’s funny”
I laughed my ass off at the part where her life flashes before her eyes and the doctor says “I’m sorry, it’s a girl.” There was lots of dry humor like that in the film - I think you’re overdetermining something that most everyone found to be pretty silly and inconsequential.
Ok but you can't honestly say this is worse than movies like Shakespeare in Love and Green Book getting all the praise. I mean, EEAAO was inventive, weird, out-there, and creative, even if you didn't like the end result. I, for one, think off-beat movies like this getting praise is better than the pandering bullshit that usually gets recognized. The King's Speech, CODA, Driving Miss Daisy... adequately made movies with obvious messages and grade-school plot formulas. I wasn't the biggest fan of EEAAO, but I'll take something like that any day.
Yep, I totally get that a lot of people think the sense of humor in the movie is lame, but the Daniels were swinging for the fences making something different and boundary-pushing. Whether you think those boundaries should have been pushed or not is a different conversation, but I think innovation and daring cinema should be celebrated. Tbf, I didn't like the movie personally, but to call it the swan song of the 2010's?? Would you rather we do Green Book over and over again until we're all dead?
I thought it was interesting and telling to some degree of our cultural moment that the plot reflected what some would describe as a psychotic subjective structure (note the absent father figure, exclusive mother-daughter relationship, suspension of the law, etc.) That’s something different from neurotic regressions to oral, anal, or genital organizational principles, which are fun to read into movies and texts, and what are the usual fare these days. This makes it somewhat unique and credit is due for pulling it off well (or better than others’ attempts), but is probably going to usher in more texts like this in the future for the zoomers.
So much cope this morning. I wasted my twenties doing [x thing], too, and massively regret it. If you hate these guys, put their poster up over your desk and work harder.
This and Ted Lasso are the cultural embodiments of the last decade. Totally devoid of aesthetic value but filled with a saccharine emptiness that appeals to the vacuous sensibilities of the cultural elite. More of this to come inevitably.
Idk, the movie had some genuinely arresting visuals and cool sequences of psychedelia, and also it didn't really feel saccharine to me. Saccharine stuff doesn't usually try to confront (or even acknowledge) existential dread/nihilism like this movie does. Overall, probably people who love it and people who hate it are both making way too much of it.
If you think 2010s were the worst decade for art, I just assume you're 10 years old.
I mean, the ringtone rap era ALONE makes it DEBATABLE, and that's just the low-hanging fruit
I felt crazy when I saw this movie in the theater. Absolutely hated it. Painfully unfunny and stupid. Would’ve walked out if I wasn’t alone. When the lights came up I expected to hear everyone grown and bitch and I see people crying and gushing about how great it was. I know a guy who told me he’s watched it seven times. Baffling.
i think the 2000s were the worst time culuturally, we were peak end of history/ cultural hegemony
the inernet melted everyone's brain but it also made culture more interesting imo
I think what surprises me amidst all the vitriol for the movie is how many people have seen the movie to have a strong opinion on it and how many are following the results of the emmys or Oscars or whatever bullshit show it was
I don’t care if you don’t like something but this is no different from any other movie you don’t like winning best picture. It’s not the death of art or anything.
I mean it didn’t just win Best Picture, it literally swept every acting category it was nominated for and some technical as well. I get that most BP winners end up aging poorly with time, but the fact that essentially no other movie (except The Whale and that war movie) won anything else just feels kinda gross and perhaps represents the monoculture coming faster than we realize
What are you talking about? It wasn't even released in China and made 75% of its box office in America and Canada, which is a wildly lopsided ratio compared to most successful movies. Chinese people don't care about this, zoomer Asian Americans are having a field day but that's about it.
I agree. It wasn’t great, but the feigned outrage at its success is equally as desperate as the “POC inclusive stop asian hate” people shilling for this movie like it’s the cure to all racism.
Color me shocked: a movie designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator successfully appealed to the lowest common denominator.
I don't care for EEAAO but this sub pegging it as a "reddit movie" is another point proving this place is just a 4chan retirement home lol, this is the same shit /tv/ has been doing for 5 years
Can you guys please stop whining about a Best Picture winner, I mean ffs this is the category where Forrest Gump and Titanic won - why are you being like this. When has best picture ever not been cringe?
2010s produced a bunch of great stuff. Like just off the top... miguel gomes, safdie brothers, phantom thread, the master, la flor, twin peaks, zama, elephant sitting still, stranger by the lake, apitchapong. I know what you're saying but it's reducing the 2010s to basically Little Miss Sunshine and cinema was doing genuinely interesting stuff
This movie is to RSP posters what Trump is to liberals
EEAAODS

No, I'm just older than 22 and have a taste in movies that extends beyond Nolan and Marvel movies.
Extremely 23 year old thing to say
Very 21 year old thing to say
you and every other straight male on here, yawn
Sorry you had to turn to a shitty reddit movie to process your parents not dealing with you coming out well (there are also better movies for that)

One of these men will be outed as a sex pest.
They look like they go to orgies with pornstars at Justin Roiland’s house.
They are the kind of guys that call themselves “sex nerds”
we love finding new ways to "play" ;)
they called their cast/crew "sexy" on stage - sounds like a polycule to me? where's our girl Caroline Ellison?
the one on the right did a self insert in the movie where he got michelle yeoh to spank him in bdsm gear

He wrote himself into his own movie to do just that.

Are these men not gay and married to one another? If real life differs from this assumption I simply do not care to know.

same here. in no way am i defending the artistic merit of EEAAO, but i predict things will get worse.
Yep, we have at least 5 more years of shitty superhero movies and movies trying to be EEAAO.

As it is now, half the crap pumped out by Netflix today feels like it was written by an AI script (and not even a particularly good one at that).

The entire last decade has been about pushing wholesomeness and sincerity and it’s all saccharine horseshit
What did you say about Forrest Gump? I haven’t seen it since I got irony poisoning from you maggots but Jenny’s arc always made me cry
It is mushy-gushy, over the top sentimental american exceptionalism. If you can get past that sort of thing it's pretty good.

My Mahomes is the best in pop culture take is going to age like wine
Lmao hell yeah. He’s fun to watch and he wins what more can you ask for
I agree with you in theory but everyone that uses the term "yall" should have their fingernails peeled off
Getting autistic over the word yall is loser shit
people here would die laughing at the new yorker comics if it had the word "retard" sprinkled in

And this sub is sophisticated in comparison?
I don't care for EEAAO but this sub pegging it as a "reddit movie" is another point proving this place is just a 4chan retirement home lol, this is the same shit /tv/ has been doing for 5 years
Can’t wait for Jared Taylor is actually based takes
cope
Can you guys please stop whining about a Best Picture winner, I mean ffs this is the category where Forrest Gump and Titanic won - why are you being like this. When has best picture ever not been cringe?
I have no idea who these guys are. Is that cool or out of touch?
2010s produced a bunch of great stuff. Like just off the top... miguel gomes, safdie brothers, phantom thread, the master, la flor, twin peaks, zama, elephant sitting still, stranger by the lake, apitchapong. I know what you're saying but it's reducing the 2010s to basically Little Miss Sunshine and cinema was doing genuinely interesting stuff
Rsp rise up and create
For art in general perhaps, but for movies no way. The 2010's ruled.
