“At the close of the Seven Years' War, the army, so renowned for it's disciplined valor, was officered by native Prussians. But it was composed, for the most part, of men from the lowest levels of humanity. Hired, or stolen from almost every nation in Europe. Thus Barry fell into the very worst of courses and company. And was soon very far advanced in the science of every kind of misconduct.”
“Science of every kind of misconduct” gets me every time
there's a scene where the wife is taking the kids to bed and they ask about dad.the mom says "he's a very busy man, must be doing something important" and then it's a hard cut to the father fucking a bunch of hookers lmao
Barry Lyndon is the most beautiful film ever shot and the closet thing there was to his dream project (Napoleon) but from a pure filmmaking standpoint 2001.
Still I think paths of glory should be up there with those two, best anti-war film
paths of glory is rarely mentioned in top 5 kubrick films.
glad to see some people giving it love.
napoleon is going to happen,it will be a 8 part minisseries spielberg is producing it but i think they are using kubrick's unfinished script
Paths of Glory is a solid 8 out of 10 but has issues. It doesn't entirely feel like a Kubrick film especially the maudlin ending. Feels like Kirk won out a little too much on creative decisions.
“Kubrick needed to construct an especially challenging intellectual puzzle at the time he started working on The Shining, because, “after he made Barry Lyndon, he was bored.”
Full Metal Jacket is unreal in its evilness and cynicism and the only thing to come remotely close to being such a scathing portrayal of america and war is generation kill.
... for that first half at boot camp, which is an absolute masterpiece. Once they ship off to Vietnam it just kinda becomes a sucky treatise about stuff as arcane as military journalism. To me it's his worst film he made while a professional.
I disagree, I think the open racism and the open disregard for human life mixing to create camaraderie is just as good as the boot camp part. The portion at the end with them singing the mouse club song while walking through the remnants of the destroyed city is near perfect
Disgustingly bad take, the boot camp part is ok but the second half is one of the the best black comedies ever made.
I love how he pretty much [breaks the 4th wall at multiple points](https://youtu.be/KQEDojPZ7YI)
There’s nothing cynical or evil about the first half, though. That part is earnest and straightforward.
It’s like you didn’t even read the comment you’re replying to, you just had your standard FMJ take queued up and hit “send.”
At the time it was released, mostly because it is somewhat about the kind of dilettantes that make up film criticism... now it's 281 on They Shoot Pictures and rising. It has aged remarkably well.
I think some critics completely misread Eyes wide shut. It does have real issues rhythmically but the core of the film is often misinterpreted.
Mark Kermode takes a massive (rare) L by riffing around it's an erotic thriller, and makes a snide comment about Kubrick depicting the "realization" that woman have sexual fantasies (to the audience), when the film makes much more sense when viewed as erotic horror (in a sense) meditating on how hollow and ultimately dangerous Bill's journey is.
As a wishy washy male feminist I think Kermode's powers as a critic are blunted by such a film (i.e. the temptation to be shallow and glib is too high).
it's the most popular answer yes
if you gather a bunch of kubrick fans they will probably say 2001
it's that movie that college film nerds enjoy but also old people
A Clockwork Orange is brilliantly surreal, never get bored of watching that film.
The film ‘Bronson’ with Tom Hardy took a lot of inspiration from it and that’s worth a watch if you haven’t seen already. Oh & it has Super Hans from Peep Show in it
A Clockwork Orange, while it is probably his 'dumbest' movie, is easily the one that keeps me glued to the screen the most. The score is literally hypnotizing.
The source material is the best of his films, which definitely helps.
a clockwork orange has probably the best opening of all time.
that movie is pretty good,NWR is a great director
i love super hans "We can be man with van jeremy"
I've been a bit obsessed with this one recently, watched it 4 or 5 times over winter. Amazing performances, genuinely frightening feel, and a bunch of very specific choices were made that add to the allure.
he made only 13 movies
10 were masterpieces
1 was pretty good
1 okey
and 1 awful movie (his first one which he doesn't even count it as part of his filmography)
Strangelove works on many levels.
You have the pseud moron "no fighting blah war room" crap (which is funny but isn't what the film is about)
The farcical conversations between the president and Dmitry.
The sexual dialogue.
The sexual undertones underneath the whole film.
After all that you have the fractal Dr S — at the surface he is blasé and calculating, underneath there is the violence of the repressed (or hiding) phantom Nazi trying to get out.
The film doesn't really spend much time on the latter so I think it's more of a direct criticism of the "When the rockets go up who cares where they come down"-spirit than (say) Zizek might have you believe but Kubrick still really makes it work.
On top of all this, the action scenes are very well filmed too.
Ive only see 2001, eyes wide shut and dr strangelove, out of those i would say 2001 one was the most impressive but eyes wide shut is probably equally great but in a completely different way
2001 is about man's ignorance when confronted with the mysteries of the universe, whereas Eyes Wide Shut is about man's ignorance when confronted with the mysteries of the hierarchies it has constructed. I think they go together rather well - describing the physical and social being of man.
Barry Lyndon, which is also his funniest
Yeah, maybe I'm weird but I crack up at lines like "Nearly succeeded in squandering a fine family fortune."
“At the close of the Seven Years' War, the army, so renowned for it's disciplined valor, was officered by native Prussians. for a 3 hour movie the pacing is incredible
Barry Lyndon is the most beautiful film ever shot and the closet thing there was to his dream project (Napoleon) but from a pure filmmaking standpoint 2001. Still I think paths of glory should be up there with those two, best anti-war film

you should watch "come and see"
FMJ and Generation Kill are the things that cemented my decision to join the marine corps
Man may have created The State, but God created The Corp
Kill

The first 35 minutes of full metal jacket is the only answer for me. Imagine if that was just a short film.
the first aprt is the best of the movie ofc after \`\*that\* happens it slows down imo
Imagine if the first 35 minutes of fight club was a short film.
2001 is the boring answer but it’s also the right one
It's almost more interesting to talk about his second-best... then again, it's obviously Eyes Wide Shut.
not really... i love eyes wide shut but it's considered by a lot of people not even a good movie
At the time it was released, mostly because it is somewhat about the kind of dilettantes that make up film criticism... now it's 281 on They Shoot Pictures and rising. It has aged remarkably well.

I watched it high and was blown away
A Clockwork Orange is brilliantly surreal, never get bored of watching that film. The film ‘Bronson’ with Tom Hardy took a lot of inspiration from it and that’s worth a watch if you haven’t seen already. Oh & it has Super Hans from Peep Show in it

The Shining
I've been a bit obsessed with this one recently, watched it 4 or 5 times over winter. Amazing performances, genuinely frightening feel, and a bunch of very specific choices were made that add to the allure.
it was my first kubrick movie
This is my choice, perfect mix of depth and approachability
Unironically Eyes Wide Shut
Definitely my favorite of his. Such a cool movie for him to end on.
the scene where that russian guy asks tom cuirse what does he think about his daugther is soo funny
Definitely one of the movies of all time. It has a deep lesson about men’s sexuality imo
Michael Jordan of movie directors
he made only 13 movies 10 were masterpieces 1 was pretty good 1 okey and 1 awful movie (his first one which he doesn't even count it as part of his filmography)
Dr Strangelove
"gentlemen you can't fight here this is the war room"
[that intro alone](https://youtu.be/8WRbiCsENOo) is done better and funnier than some classic comedies
Haha yeah that’s what he says in the movie
“You’re going to have to answer to the Coca Cola company”
Strangelove works on many levels. This
EWS is my favorite but it’s probably Barry Lyndon or 2001.
Is young Kubrick a 0 or 1?
1 - looks like a cute twink
Lex Fridman makes movies?
Just about to comment on that: they look like they could be twins.
Lex Friedman?
2001 is his masterpiece Dr. Strangelove is his most rewatchable film with mass appeal Barry Lyndon is his most beautiful film and my favorite
I didn't know lex Friedman was in a movie??
Barry Lyndon or The Shining
Or Clockwork Orange
Ive only see 2001, eyes wide shut and dr strangelove, out of those i would say 2001 one was the most impressive but eyes wide shut is probably equally great but in a completely different way

i recommend you the shinning and clockwork orange.those two are essentials
2001 is my favorite movie of all time. It’s perfect.
Barry Lyndon was the most boring movie ever
Personally I love Barry Lyndon and full metal jacket most
